Endless adventure A haven for lovers of the great outdoors

V

isitors to the historic town of Cottage Grove will find it and the surrounding area to be a gold mine of activity and exploration for all ages. There are nuggets to be found in both the town and country for those willing to search them out.

Dorena Lake is six miles east of Cottage Grove by way of Row River Road. This large lake covers 1,900 acres when full and features camping, a large boat ramp and picnic area at nearby Baker Bay Park. Schwarz Park is nearby and also offers camping.

The entire family will want to explore our historic downtown with its beautiful city parks, colorful murals, museums and small businesses.

Umpqua National Forest boasts a wide selection of hiking trails, campgrounds, picnicking spots, waterfalls and places to commune with nature. The forest covers 984,602 acres of mountain woodlands and is about 15 miles east of town, beyond Dorena Lake.

Recreation opportunities abound for those who are inclined to get out and explore the countryside, including a covered bridge tour and the Bohemia mining district. There are two U.S. Army Corps of Engineer reservoirs located outside of town that draw locals and visitors from around the state to their shores. Serene Cottage Grove Lake is a short five-mile drive south of town going out Sixth Street to London and Reservoir roads. The lake is three miles long and covers 1,158 acres when it’s full. Tent and RV camping are available at Pine Meadows Campground, in addition to a nearby primitive campground. Swimming, fishing and picnicking are also available at Shortridge and Wilson Creek Parks.

The Row River Trail is a popular Rails-to-Trails project that begins in Cottage Grove and winds 17 miles along the Row River, passing Dorena Lake along the way. It is a safe, scenic path that is paved for walking, biking or horseback riding. The gentle hills are possible for most stages of fitness, and the gorgeous scenery makes the effort worthwhile. Culture comes in many forms and includes performances at the Cottage Theatre’s beautiful state-of-the-art, $1 million facility that attracts and features local actors in a variety of plays. Other annual events include the rodeo and Bohemia Mining Days celebration in July, the WOE Heritage Fair in August, and the December lighting of the Main Street Christmas tree.

Lending a hand By Caitlyn May

Non-profits and good Samaritans lead the charge in Cottage Grove

S

tan approaches the counter, a limp in his step and a smile on his face. He’s gotten his fouryear chip and he wants to show it off. Noah, no more than eight, drags the back of his hand across his mouth and dumps his plate into the trash, just like he was taught the first time he came here. There’s Michelle and Doris, the younger crew that sits by the front doors and the club of older ladies--a Rosie the Riveter among them--that requests the same table every Sunday. These are the people of Soup’s On, a Sunday night community dinner held in the Shepherd room of the Cottage Grove Community Center. “I’m the mom and they’re comfortable here. They know we don’t have an agenda,” Sharon Jean, founder of Soup’s On, said. The program is in its seventh year and Jean still stands guard over her flock from her spot in the kitchen. She’s the boss. And they know it. When talk of starting a soup kitchen for any and all who needed it without the hoopla of checking IDs, monitoring incomes and reporting to a governing agency, the community was skeptical. But Jean is used to it. She’s counciled boards in Hawaii and worked on political campaigns in Alaska. She understands people and with decades of experience under her belt she still has just one mission. “I just want to feed people,” she said. So, she took her cause to the city. Cottage Grove City Manager Rich-

ard Meyers, she said, had his doubts on top of concerns about an unmonitored dinner that boasted free food. “But, they have just as much right to be in that building as anyone else,” Meyers told The Sentinel. “I did think it was nuts!” he said. “I asked here where are you getting the volunteers and where are you getting all the food?” Jean had a plan. Food for Lane County, a food pantry that serves outlets catering to low-income and homeless indivduals, requires certain criteria be met. But Jean didn’t want to ask people their income level or document who was coming in and when. Instead, she relies on donations to feed her diners and occasionally she receives food from Community Sharing, the local food pantry. Meals are made up of what she gets. Tonight, it’s roasted vegetables and oven-baked tomatoes with cheese bread. Apple pie and brownies for desert. The meal is planned for 5 p.m. and set to close at 6 but they never turn anyone away. “If it’s 10 after six and someone comes in, we have frozen mac and cheese or frozen chili. They don’t

leave hungry,” Jean said. That includes those who showed up on time. Each diner is given a brown-bagged lunch for the following day. Usually a peanut butter sandwhich with a snack or two. It’s just afer 6 p.m. and Jean, with her troupe of five volunteers start to clean up. Ann Marie Herron and her husband Pete have been lending a hand for more than three years. Pete--who does the dishes--was only supposed to accompany his wife on the first night. “When the weather is nice,” Herron said, “We don’t get as many people but when it gets cold, the whole world is in here.” The group uses 50 as their base for everything. 50 chairs arranged around clothed tables. 50 plates served by volunteers like in a restaurant and not lined up for diners to take like in a shelter. 50 brown-bagged lunches given out by a volunteer with a smile and a “Have a nice night.” As Jean flutters around the tables of those who are left eating and volunteers begin to clean up, Ron Jean continues to strum his guitar and rasp out “Brown Eyed Girl.” “I just feed people,” she said. “Some are homeless, some aren’t. But they sit very well together. Food is the great equalizer and it brings people together.”

Engaging and enriching the community through the magic of live theatre since 1982

N

ow in its 36th season, the theatre has grown tremendously since its humble beginnings under a parachute on the lawn of the Village Green Resort. Currently Cottage Theatre performs to audiences of more than 11,000 people each year in 80 public performances. The theatre owns and operates its own 151-seat facility, which was built with community support in 1998. Cottage Theatre steps into the national spotlight this year as one of only six chosen community theatres across the country chosen to premiere a brand new play under the auspices of the American Association of Community Theatre’s 2018 NewPlayFest. Treehouse, by Alabama playwright Joe Musso, was one of six winning scripts chosen from the 300 submissions to the national contest. The play is a riveting story of love, loss, and healing that bridges the gap between adolescence and adulthood in beautifully unexpected ways. Treehouse will be on stage at CT August 10 – 26 and the playwright will be travelling to Cottage Grove for the premiere. The rest of CT’s 2018 season provides the theatre’s usual balance between plays and musicals, dramas and comedies. The 2018 season opened with a farce, Noises Off, in February and continues April 6-29 with the energetic and upbeat musical Legally Blonde, adapted from the hit movie of the same name. June brings Arthur Miller’s powerful American drama, The Crucible from June 8 - 24. The Treehouse world premiere follows, August 10 – 26. Next, October 5 – 28, is Shrek the Musical, the fantastic fairytale adventure starring everyone’s favorite ogre. Cottage Theatre’s 2018 season concludes with a touching fable about passion and innocence (and the world’s longest running musical), The Fantasticks, November 30 – December 16. In addition to its main season, Cottage Theatre offers three summer theatre

camps for youth ages 5 to 14. For young actors age 5 – 8, the theatre offers SKIT Camp, a one-week morning day camp to be held June 25 – 29 this year. The camp includes instruction in acting, singing, and dance, and culminates in an informal performance for families. Children from 9 – 11 are invited to join S.P.A.R.K., June 18 – 22. This week-long camp helps young actors learn about themselves and develop their own strengths as performers, culminating in the creation of their own original production presented on the Cottage Theatre stage. From July 9 -20, 2018, Cottage Theatre will hold its 12th Melodrama Camp, a performance camp for actors ages 12 – 14, culminating in three public performances of an original melodrama (written by Cottage Grove playwright Keith Kessler) on July 20, 21, and 22 during Bohemia Mining Days. As a volunteer community theatre, one of CT’s primary goals is to provide a creative outlet for community members. CT actors, directors, designers, ushers, and crew members are all volunteers with a passion for theatre. New volunteers are warmly welcomed and no prior experience is necessary, just a willingness to learn and have fun! Cottage Theatre is located at 700 Village For more information about becoming involved, or for a current show schedule, visit www.cottagetheatre.

Breaking Records

Cottage Grove attempts to break toga party world record you have a desire to don a ISt.ftoga in the middle of Main next summer than mark

your calenders for August 18. The party is headed to Cottage Grove. They call themselves the Double Secret Society and they have plans for the anniversary of the cult classic, “Animal House.” The film’s iconic parade scene was filmed on Cottage Grove’s Main St. and the group plans to capitalize on that fact to lure tourists into town for the celebration. In collaboration with

the Cottage Grove Area Chamber of Commerce, the group is pulling out all the stops. The crown jewel of the event will reportedly be an effort to break the Guinness Book’s World Record for the largest toga party. “For the 25th anniversary, Cottage Grove had a big event,” said Cottage Grove Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Travis Palmer. “We actually got the Guinness World Record for the largest toga party.” The city has since lost the title (to a university in

By Caitlyn May

Australia that boasted 3,700 togas) but Palmer, along with the Double Secret Society is determined to get it back by asking residents to make their own togas and meet the party on Main St. The Double Secret Society isn’t stopping there. It plans to show the movie in town, perhaps twice--once as a PG version and once in its original format. Plans for tours of filming locations may also be apart of the celebration as well as a food fight that has yet to be decided. The group is hoping to break a second world record by hosting the world’s largest food fight but details of the proposal haven’t quite been ironed out yet. The main sticking point? what are estimated 30,000

people going to throw at each other? Popcorn? Pasta? While the idea is still on the table, the matter of who would clean up the mess is still up in the air. Cottage Grove City Manager Richard Meyers previously said of the plan to have half the city throw food at the other half that it’s been done before during a city celebration of “Animal House.” As for who’s going to clean it up and what type of food will be thrown he said the city and chamber would have to have a discussion. The University of Oregon was also used to film the movie and the school regularly uses the famous soundtrack at its sporting events.

Friendly skies, safe landing By Zach Silva

W

ith a group of supporters, donors and interested citizens gathered around, the Cottage Grove Airport Welcome Center officially opened its doors in September of 2017. The center, which cost just over $100,000 and was all funded through local donations is a small building that features a bathroom, a mini fridge with water and a couch for pilots who fly into the Cottage Grove airport

and need a place where they can relax. The project, that was spearheaded by Nadine Kelly and her husband began, as anyone who was part of the planning process will tell you, “three years and eight months ago.” “We were at a… tourism meeting, back in January of 2014 and I just turned to my husband and said we need a bathroom [at the airport]

and that’s exactly how it started. We need a bathroom and now here, three years and eight months later,” said Nadine. While there is a bathroom and a place for pilots to relax after a flight, Nadine sees the building, that is replacing the outhouse that once stood in its place as a gateway for pilots to come and explore the city of Cottage Grove. “Pilots fly to eat, play and stay,” said Nadine. “I’m excited for the people to come in and experience Cottage Grove. Cottage Grove has a lot to offer aviation.” Travis Palmer, the Executive Director of the Cottage Grove Area Chamber of Commerce, believes that getting pilots to land in town will have a significant economic impact. “Let me run through a scenario: a pilot chooses to come to Cottage Grove. They fly in, they buy gas, there’s a gas tax, they stay at a hotel, often, because they’ll make an overnight out of it. So that’s a

room tax for Cottage Grove.” Palmer is excited about the opportunities that this will bring and about its historic nature. This is the first time in Oregon that a community has raised the entirety of the money for a building like this. Another group of people that are excited about the opportunities are those from Travel Lane County. Natalie Inouye, the Vice President of tourism marketing at the organization is excited for what is to come. “Aviation tourism is really important to us and it is a county-wide thing. But what they’ve done here is really special,” said Inouye. She noted that she thinks that this can become not just a place to enjoy a “$100 dollar lunch.” This is a common phrase in the aviation community that is when a pilot flies to a city for lunch but does not stay and so they are paying for the gas and the meal. (Pictured above, community notables open the welcome center.)

Covered Bridge Capital of Oregon Centennial Bridge This bridge was constructed in 1987 by volunteer labor to celebrate Cottage Grove’s centennial. It rests on abutments of the old Main Street Bridge, which stood until the 1950s. Swinging Bridge Located a half-mile upstream from Centennial Bridge, Swinging Bridge was built for foot and bicycle traffic and was mostly used by children crossing the Coast Fork to get to school. Currently closed for repairs. Chambers Railroad Bridge Built in 1925 by lumberman J.H. Chambers to cross the Coast Fork of the Willamette River from his sawmill to the timberlands west of town, this is the only covered railroad bridge west of the Mississippi River. Restored in 2011. Mosby Creek Bridge Constructed in 1920 and restored in 1990, this is the oldest bridge in Lane County. Its one lane remains open to traffic today.

Stewart Bridge Constructed in 1930 and restored in 1996, this structure has semi-circular portal arches, ribbon openings at the eaves, and decorative S-curve brackets. The deep water below the bridge is considered one of the best swimming holes in the county. Dorena Bridge Constructed in 1949 and restored in 1996, this bridge was built after the construction of Dorena Dam on the Row River, forming the present day lake. The Dorena Bridge once tied the roads on the north and south sides of the lake. Closed to traffic, the bridge is a popular wedding site. Currin Bridge Constructed in 1925 and restored in 1995, this bridge features white portals and red sides. Currin Bridge replaced an earlier covered bridge built in 1883 by a prominent local bridge builder, Nels Roney.

A stroll around Cottage Grove just isn’t complete without a walk over the Centennial Bridge, constructed in 1987.

The Currin Bridge and its counterparts are one of the most frequently cited reasons for a visit to Cottage Grove by out-of-towners. 14 •

History and its stewards

P

Bridging the past and future Cottage Grove history

T

he Kalapuya Indians called the southern Willamette Valley and northern Douglas County home, though their numbers quickly diminished as some left the area to avoid the white settlers who began arriving here in 1848. Disease and a move to reservations reduced local Kalapuya populations, and Sam Fern, the last fullblooded Kalapuya, passed away Sept. 4, 1919. Many early settlers traveled to Cottage Grove on the Applegate Trail, which left the Oregon Trail in Idaho, crossed Nevada and came into southern Oregon over the Cascade Mountains. Other settlers followed the northern route down the

Columbia River to Oregon City and then traveled south through the Willamette Valley to Lane County. The Donation Land Claim Act brought more Americans to seek a life in Oregon. James Chapin came to the Willamette Valley from the west, crossing the Coast Range after his ship floundered off the Oregon Coast. He settled south of Cottage Grove in 1865. A cottage owned by Greenbery C. Pearce was home to the first post office in 1855. It was located in an oak grove near Creswell — hence the name Cottage Grove. After the railroad arrived in 1872, a feud broke out

between west siders and those east of the river in the town of Lemati over which side of the river the post office would occupy. Over time, homes and businesses filled in between the two settlements and they became known as Cottage Grove. Travel by horseback and wagons gave way to the railroad until the Pacific Highway was constructed at the site of present-day River Road. Later, Highway 99 became the main north-south route on the Pacific Coast. In 1957, Interstate 5 opened on the east side of the city. Agriculture and timber have been among the town’s major industries from its earliest days, and after World War II, mills in the area

expanded as a building boom drove the nation’s economy. Mining was also a means for early residents to fill their purses. As early as 1863 gold was discovered in the Bohemia Mountains (so named for one of its early miners, James “Bohemia” Johnson). Bohemia City was founded in 1866 and mining began in earnest in the 1890s, bringing an influx of businesses into Cottage Grove. Flooding was a common problem in Cottage Grove until the 1940s, when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers constructed Cottage Grove Reservoir on the Coast Fork and Dorena Reservoir on Row River.

oday, a snapshot of the area’s history is displayed at the Cottage Grove Museum, located at H Street and Birch Avenue in an octagonal building that once was home to the Catholic Church. The Cottage Grove Historical Library, located at the corner of 10th and Jefferson Streets, also contains much information about businesses, buildings, churches and schools that pertains to the development of the area. Residents and business people have worked to preserve the flavor of the community by preserving many historic buildings and adding murals, creating a bridge between yesterday and today. tate championships don’t come around Cottage Grove often. There are an impressive 10 boys swimming state titles and then one title in boys’ soccer (2008), boys’ basketball (1991) and girls’ basketball (2010). And that is it. But in 2017, Cottage Grove proudly got to add state football champs to that list. Attending their third state championship game in just five years, this time the Lions exited Hillsboro Stadium with the coveted first place trophy in hand. “It’s unbelievable to see where we’ve come as a program and our expectations of our kids and words can’t describe how proud I am of those seniors and for those kids,” said head coach Gary Roberts after the championship game. With the win, Roberts became the winningest football coach in Cottage Grove

CHAMPIONS history. It was not long ago that the Lions were perennial Sky-Em cellar dwellers. But 2017 was the dream season that the Lions had been waiting for. In the championship against Marshfield on November 25, it was a familiar storyline: the offense overwhelmed the opposition as the defense allowed just two touchdowns. A year after finishing second in state, the Cottage Grove football team completed their undefeated season and beat Marshfield 48-14 in the 4A state championship game. “Last year after we lost, all of our juniors, going to be seniors, said that we’re going to come back and we’re going to do it. We are all just persistent, I would say. And we knew what we had to do to get back and we did it all season and we just

went crazy with it,” said Cottage Grove senior Hayden Glenn who was named player of the game. For the Lions it was a story of redemption. After nearly reaching the pinnacle for the past five years, this season capped off their success. “When we walked off the field last year… our guys were disappointed but they were hungry to get back here and they worked really hard and I’m so proud of them for what they did. I can’t – it’s unbelievable. Because I, you know, it’s easy to think that you’re going to get there but it’s a lot of work,” said Roberts. But winning the title made all of that work worth it for a group that was able to forever imprint their name in Cottage Grove football history. “It feels, words can’t describe how I’m feeling right now. It’s

just been four years of grinding. I’ve been there all summer for the last four years and it’s just been a picture, it’s just been a dream and I finally just, I finally have it in my hand. When I had that gold medal in my hand I just didn’t know what to say. It brought tears to my eyes seeing coach hold that blue trophy,” said Ladd. It became a frenzy on the field as coaches, players, parents and fans found each other and embraced each other, took pictures and just smiled as they rejoiced that the title was finally theirs. “All of the hard work has paid off. All the pain has paid off,” said senior Nate Farrell. “Here we are and it’s paid off. I won a state championship with every one of those guys. I know them by name, I know them by heart.”

n the span of a year, South Lane Wheels has provided 17,300 oneway rides, providing a needed service and offering the community a way around town. The organization was founded in 1982 as a non-profit with a mission to provide safe, accessible and financially feasible services for residents who needed transportation around the city and as far away as Eugene. “For 33 years,” the organization says, “we have provided thousands of individuals rides to doctor appointments, shopping, restaurants, residences, nutrition sites, recreation, workplaces, school and special events.” South Lane offers several services including door-to-door and medical transportation. Its standard service, the “route around town,” provides residents and visitors an accessible transportation option throughout the city. The route serves several Cottage Grove landmarks including the Village Shopping Center, Lane Community College, Cottage Grove High School, Riverview Terrance, Cottage Grove Rodeo and Fair Grounds, Walmart, Bi-Mart, PeaceHealth Cottage Grove Medical Center and Cottage Grove Living Center. Drivers are permitted to travel up to 3/4 mile off the noted route. South Lane Wheels stresses that its services have no age restriction or income requirement. All residents and visitors are welcome to ride the route, utilize door-to-door and medical ride services.
