isitors to the historic town of Cottage Grove will find it and the surrounding area to be a gold mine of activity and exploration for all ages. There are nuggets to be found in both the town and country for those willing to search them out.
Dorena Lake is six miles east of Cottage Grove by way of Row River Road. This large lake covers 1,900 acres when full and features camping, a large boat ramp and picnic area at nearby Baker Bay Park. Schwarz Park is nearby and also offers camping.
The entire family will want to explore our historic downtown with its beautiful city parks, colorful murals, museums and small businesses.
Umpqua National Forest boasts a wide selection of hiking trails, campgrounds, picnicking spots, waterfalls and places to commune with nature. The forest covers 984,602 acres of mountain woodlands and is about 15 miles east of town, beyond Dorena Lake.
Recreation opportunities abound for those who are inclined to get out and explore the countryside, including a covered bridge tour and the Bohemia mining district. There are two U.S. Army Corps of Engineer reservoirs located outside of town that draw locals and visitors from around the state to their shores. Serene Cottage Grove Lake is a short five-mile drive south of town going out Sixth Street to London and Reservoir roads. The lake is three miles long and covers 1,158 acres when it’s full. Tent and RV camping are available at Pine Meadows Campground, in addition to a nearby primitive campground. Swimming, fishing and picnicking are also available at Shortridge and Wilson Creek Parks.
The Row River Trail is a popular Rails-to-Trails project that begins in Cottage Grove and winds 17 miles along the Row River, passing Dorena Lake along the way. It is a safe, scenic path that is paved for walking, biking or horseback riding. The gentle hills are possible for most stages of fitness, and the gorgeous scenery makes the effort worthwhile. Culture comes in many forms and includes performances at the Cottage Theatre’s beautiful state-of-the-art, $1 million facility that attracts and features local actors in a variety of plays. Other annual events include the rodeo and Bohemia Mining Days celebration in July, the WOE Heritage Fair in August, and the December lighting of the Main Street Christmas tree.

Engaging and enriching the community through the magic of live theatre since 1982 Cottage Theatre (CT) has been engaging and enriching our community through the magic of live theatre since 1982. Now in its 37th season, CT has grown tremendously since humble beginnings under a parachute on the lawn of the Village Green Resort. Currently CT performs to audiences of more than 11,000 people each year in 80 public performances, drawing patrons from throughout Lane County and beyond. A member of the American Association of Community Theatre (AACT), Cottage Theatre was one of just six theatres in the nation selected to produce a world premiere as part of the AACT 2018 NewPlayFest. 2019 will be a season to remember at Cottage Theatre, with four great shows and a dramatic “ACT III” facility remodeling in the summer. This year’s season provides the theatre’s usual balance between plays and musicals, dramas and comedies. In February, CT opened with the timeless tale of two star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet. that production, CT hosted the 18th Rhythm & Blues Revue, an annual fundraiser for the Cottage Grove High School Music Department. CT’s 2019 season continues April 5 – 28 with the classic musical, The Sound of Music, the inspirational story of Maria von Trapp. After The Sound of Music closes, CT’s season will pause for a brief intermission while Cottage Theatre undergoes a major facelift. Beginning in May, Cottage Theatre will remodel its facility to add 50 seats, improve sightlines, and upgrade technical capabilities. “The goal of this dramatic transformation is to enhance the theatre-going experience for both our patrons and volunteers,” says Executive Director Susan Goes. “We want this to be the finest facility for live theatre in all of Lane County!” In addition to replacing all of the current seats and adding 50 more, the theatre will reconfigure its auditorium to improve sightlines and upgrade the sound system for improved clarity. Additional ADA seating and a hearing loop will be installed. The lobby will be redesigned for improved flow for the theatre’s growing audiences. “This remodeling project was triggered by the (lovely!) problem of multiple sold-out performances,” adds Goes. “As CT’s production quality has increased over the last decade, so has attendance and our geographic reach. 11% of our current audience travels more than 50 miles to attend shows in Cottage Grove.” To christen the upgraded theatre in October,

Cottage Theatre will produce The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) [Revised], a zany, side-splitting romp through 37 plays in 97 minutes from October 11 – 27. The seasons concludes with Oliver!, the endearing classic musical about a lovable orphan, December 6 – 22. In addition to its main season, Cottage Theatre typically offers three summer theatre camps for youth ages 5 to 14, however those programs will be on hiatus in 2019 due to construction. The full series of summer camp offerings – one- to two-week camps for actors age 5 – 8, 9 – 11, and 12 – 14 – will resume in summer 2020. As a volunteer community theatre, one of CT’s primary goals is to provide a creative outlet for community members. CT actors, directors, designers, ushers and crew members are all volunteers with a passion for theatre. New volunteers are warmly welcomed and no prior experience is necessary, just a willingness to learn and have fun! Cottage Theatre is located at 700 Village Drive in Cottage Grove, just across the street from the hospital. 60-years of hometown fun BMD celebrates, July 18-20
By Cindy Weeldreyer
There are lots of reasons why Bohemia Mining Days has survived for six decades and is recognized as an Oregon Heritage Tradition. In all those years, for festival-goers, it has been a jam-packed weekend of parades, Old West shootouts and train robberies, carnival rides, a multitude of contests, a miner’s high-country breakfast, the occasional famous person’s visit, favorite bands, favorite vendors who return year after year, and seeing old friends and neighbors strolling through “Bohemia City” in Coiner Park.
if it would continue. Yet they persevered through the 1980’s and 1990’s.
Celebrities who paid a visit during BMD are: Governor Mark Hatfield in 1966, actor and comedian Jerry Lewis in 1970, and actress Summer Glau in 2013.
Williams recruited co-worker Doyle Hicks and his wife Doris to join the committee. From 1986-1999, the Hicks and the Hogues served as the primary leaders of the festival.
Don Williams served as BMD Committee Chair from 1979-1984. Under his leadership, the festival moved from downtown to the Chambers Mill site (where the Hayden Homes subdivision is today). It remained there until 1986 when it moved to the site of today’s Walmart. In 1980, the Grand Miners Parade was the second largest in the state with 154 entries.
Organizers of the 1959 Oregon Statehood Centennial event had so much fun they decided to continue an annual celebration focused on local history by creating the Prospectors and Gold Diggers booster club. The Bohemia Mining Days festival we know today originally began as one of the Club’s committees. The vision of Prospector Ray Nelson was to capitalize on local history and bring more commerce to town by drawing visitors off the newly-constructed Interstate 5 freeway. Today, he is recognized by festival organizers as “The Father of BMD”. In 1964, the Club established its popular Miners’ Breakfast in the heart of the Bohemia Mining District. In 1968, Club members formed the 15-member Lemati Gang, a Wild West performing troupe. In partnership with the Cottage Grove Riding Club, gang members staged robberies of the excursion train (The Goose) that provided a free three-hour roundtrip ride up to Culp Creek. In 1969, Ellen and Gary “Bill” Hogue volunteered to serve on the planning committee. For 30 years they devoted their time to continue the annual festival on a shoestring budget with never enough volunteers. Some of those years were so lean some wondered 12 •

& Beans Dinner, Chuckwagon Breakfast and the ladies-only Bloomer Parade. She retired in 2009, after organizing the successful 50th Anniversary Celebration. Past BMD President and City Councilor Jake Boone is the “Father of The Feud”. He introduced The Slabtown vs. Lemati Feud in 2012 and it was so well received it continues as an ongoing tradition. In 2013, the BMD Board established the Bohemia Heritage Association, a 501c3 organization that accepts grants from foundations and donors to sponsor arts, cultural and educational activities. In 2014, the Bohemia City Players brought live theatre back to Coiner Park. In 2016, the Historical Treasure Hunt was added. Today, the Pacific Power-sponsored train transports festival-goers to numerous offsite venues. In 2017, BMD hosted its first large-scale concert in Bohemia Park with the nationally-touring band, Home Free. After more than 25 years as a BMD volunteer, Cindy Weeldreyer became the festival coordinator in 2015. Current BMD President Cathy Simmons joined the board in 2012 because of her love for Bohemia Mining Days and her “failure is not an option” attitude.
They used all their vacation time to produce BMD because they were determined to not let it die. Doyle Hicks said they were grateful for all the last-minute volunteers who always stepped up to keep it going. There were two notable years, 1999 and 2011, when the festival financially seemed doomed to fail. Both times the generosity of local businesses and donors paid off the debts. Current festival organizers fondly refer to local businesswoman Sharon Jean as the “Savior of Bohemia Mining Days” because she helped the organization survive these two financial disasters. As festival coordinator from 2001-2009, Jean strengthened BMD’s organizational structure. She introduced the Miners Steak

“We have a great mix of seasoned veterans and several newcomers on our current 10-member board,” Simmons said. “We divide up the planning responsibilities around our respective strengths and we work well as a production team to create three-days of memory-making fun. We are now hard at work planning our 60th Diamond Jubilee and can always use more donors, vendors and volunteers to make the magic happen.” The administrative office is in the Cottage Grove Hotel next to Buster’s Café. Covered Bridge Capital of Oregon Centennial Bridge This bridge was constructed in 1987 by volunteer labor to celebrate Cottage Grove’s centennial. It rests on abutments of the old Main Street Bridge, which stood until the 1950s. Swinging Bridge Located a half-mile upstream from Centennial Bridge, Swinging Bridge was built for foot and bicycle traffic and was mostly used by children crossing the Coast Fork to get to school. Currently closed for repairs. Chambers Railroad Bridge Built in 1925 by lumberman J.H. Chambers to cross the Coast Fork of the Willamette River from his sawmill to the timberlands west of town, this is the only covered railroad bridge west of the Mississippi River. Restored in 2011. Mosby Creek Bridge Constructed in 1920 and restored in 1990, this is the oldest bridge in Lane County. Its one lane remains open to traffic today.
Stewart Bridge Constructed in 1930 and restored in 1996, this structure has semi-circular portal arches, ribbon openings at the eaves, and decorative S-curve brackets. The deep water below the bridge is considered one of the best swimming holes in the county. Dorena Bridge Constructed in 1949 and restored in 1996, this bridge was built after the construction of Dorena Dam on the Row River, forming the present day lake. The Dorena Bridge once tied the roads on the north and south sides of the lake. Closed to traffic, the bridge is a popular wedding site. Currin Bridge Constructed in 1925 and restored in 1995, this bridge features white portals and red sides. Currin Bridge replaced an earlier covered bridge built in 1883 by a prominent local bridge builder, Nels Roney.
A stroll around Cottage Grove just isn’t complete without a walk over the Centennial Bridge, constructed in 1987.
The Currin Bridge and its counterparts are one of the most frequently cited reasons for a visit to Cottage Grove by out-of-towners. 14 •

History and its stewards Bridging the past and future Cottage Grove history
T
he Kalapuya Indians called the southern Willamette Valley and northern Douglas County home, though their numbers quickly diminished as some left the area to avoid the white settlers who began arriving here in 1848. Disease and a move to reservations reduced local Kalapuya populations, and Sam Fern, the last full-blooded Kalapuya, passed away Sept. 4, 1919. Many early settlers traveled to Cottage Grove on the Applegate Trail, which left the Oregon Trail in Idaho, crossed Nevada and came into southern Oregon over the Cascade Mountains. Other settlers followed the northern route down the Columbia River to Oregon City and then traveled south through the Willamette Valley
to Lane County. The Donation Land Claim Act brought more Americans to seek a life in Oregon.
time, homes and businesses filled in between the two settlements and they became known as Cottage Grove.
James Chapin came to the Willamette Valley from the west, crossing the Coast Range after his ship floundered off the Oregon Coast. He settled south of Cottage Grove in 1865.
Travel by horseback and wagons gave way to the railroad until the Pacific Highway was constructed at the site of present-day River Road. Later, Highway 99 became the main north-south route on the Pacific Coast. In 1957, Interstate 5 opened on the east side of the city.
A cottage owned by Greenbery C. Pearce was home to the first post office in 1855. It was located in an oak grove near Creswell — hence the name Cottage Grove. After the railroad arrived in 1872, a feud broke out between west siders and those east of the river in the town of Lemati over which side of the river the post office would occupy. Over
Agriculture and timber have been among the town’s major industries from its earliest days, and after World War II, mills in the area expanded as a building boom drove the nation’s economy. Mining was also a means for early residents to fill their
purses. As early as 1863 gold was discovered in the Bohemia Mountains (so named for one of its early miners, James “Bohemia” Johnson). Bohemia City was founded in 1866 and mining began in earnest in the 1890s, bringing an influx of businesses into Cottage Grove. Flooding was a common problem in Cottage Grove until the 1940s, when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers constructed Cottage Grove Reservoir on the Coast Fork and Dorena Reservoir on Row River.

oday, a snapshot of the area’s history is displayed at the Cottage Grove Museum, located at H Street and Birch Avenue in an octagonal building that once was home to the Catholic Church. The Cottage Grove Historical Library, located at the corner of 10th and Jefferson streets, also contains much information about businesses, buildings, churches and schools that pertains to the development of the area. Residents and business people have worked to preserve the flavor of the community by preserving many historic buildings and adding murals, creating a bridge between yesterday and today. Top Cottage Grove sports moments of 2018 By Zach Silva
While 2017 featured a Cottage Grove football state title, 2018 also featured plenty of athletic success for the Lions. Let’s stop and take a look back at the top-five most exciting athletic events over the last year: 5. Football finds a way to win After recording a safety, the visiting Cougars marched down the field to score a touchdown and take a four point lead with less than five minutes to play. Cottage Grove had not scored since the first quarter of the game and the team was in desperate need of a spark. And it came with a pass over the middle of the field from Cottage Grove’s Dylan Graves to Erick Giffen for a 45-yard completion, a touchdown and, ultimately, a victory. 4. Girls basketball wins in overtime The Lions were on the road
against a Marist side that was undefeated in league. But it was Cottage Grove coming away with an overtime win thanks to tenacious defense and rebounding abilities. The Spartans looked to win the game in regulation on the final possession but the Lions came up with a block to force the extra session. In overtime, the Lions hit key free throws and handed the Spartans their first Sky-Em loss of the year. 3. Softball heroic rally You couldn’t have scripted it any better. Against Sisters at home, Cottage Grove’s Chelsea Davis had two strikes against her with two out in the final inning of the game. All with the bases loaded. And Davis stepped up for the Lions as she hit a walk-off single through the right side of the infield to send home a runner
and give the team a much-needed victory. 2. Track and field success at state Last spring at Hayward Field, it was the Cottage Grove’s Jacob Woods recording individual victories in the long jump and 200 at the state meet. Woods also took second in the 100 as the Lions finished in sixth place as a team. Cottage Grove was also helped by a second place finish from Jimmy Talley in the 3,000. 1. Volleyball takes second at state It was a historic run for the Cottage Grove volleyball team. The Lions put together the most successful season in school history as they took second place in state. After the pain of the five-set loss to Valley Catholic in the championship, Cottage Grove head coach Kendra
SOUTH LANE COUNTY FIRE & RESCUE
Anderson best summed up the feelings. “I told them, look, second sucks and it’s going to hurt. And it’s going to hurt and you’re going to cry – try not to cry for the picture – but the thing is, we walk out as third or sixth, we’re walking out with smiles. But we’re walking out with second with medals around our neck,” said Anderson. Adding, “Right now, it hurts and it hurts because they really wanted it. But they accomplished a lot.”

South Lane Wheels keeps the city moving Last year, South Lane Wheels completed 11,000 one-way rides within South Lane County, providing a needed service and offering the community a way around town and beyond. Based in Cottage Grove, the organization was founded in 1982 as a non-profit with a mission to provide safe, accessible and low-cost public transportation to destinations in South Lane County. “For 37 years,” the organization says, “we have provided hundreds of individuals rides to doctor appointments, shopping, restaurants, residences, nutrition sites, recreation, workplaces, school and special events.” South Lane Wheels (SLW) offers reservation-based local and metro door-to-door services on weekdays with no age restrictions or income requirements. All residents and visitors are welcome to ride. Rates are dependent on distance and service extends as far as the Eugene/Springfield area. The LTD Connector service, a pilot program based on a Mobility-on-Demand (MOD) algorithm, is offered within Cottage Grove’s city limits and is compatible with Lane Transit District (LTD) fares. This rideshare program operated by SLW provides quick and reliable access to the LTD bus system on weekdays and most holidays. MOD can be accessed by mobile phone app, the website or a phone call. A new school for the new year It was a day that was years in the making: The opening of the new Harrison Elementary School. The South Lane School District bond measure passed in May of 2016 that ensured a new school building and after months of planning, building and preparing the brand-new building was open for members of the school community at the start of the 2018 school year. “Well this is the moment I’ve been waiting for: to see the kids’ faces when they walk in. That’s the moment that has driven the project for me and so I am beyond words excited to have the kids in here,” said principal Heidi Brown. Before students and families were welcomed in to roam the 81,000-sq. foot building, various community figures spoke in front of the crowd about their thanks to the community, those who worked on the project and ultimately about their excitement for what this school will do for the community. “…this school is an investment in our community, in our children. And if you think about it, the kids that will be going through this school door next week will be our community leaders and we need to invest in our future,” said Cottage Grove mayor Jeff Gowing. Principal Brown was able to further share what this structure signifies to students. “This building project has been an incredible
opportunity to send a message to our children, a message that I know is true for all students in the South Lane School District, in the state of Oregon and in our nation and around the world: you are valued. We believe in you,” she said. Closing the speeches were a pair of Harrison students including incoming fifth grader Oceania Taylor and fourth grader Jeffrey Conklin. “I think I speak for everyone when I say I’m so excited and grateful to attend the brand new school. Happy learning, everyone. Woohoo,” said Oceania. With an exuberant countdown from the crowd, Oceania and Jeffrey used a pair of large scissors to together cut the ribbon in front of the school and welcome those inside. Once inside, students and parents alike quickly spread throughout the school as they tried to take in everything from the common learning areas between classrooms of the same grade to the full-size gymnasium – with many students gravitating towards the new playground – as quickly as possible. “To actually have people in this building is really nice. We’re ready, we’re ready to fill it up with kids and get going. And share all of this amazing space with the community,” said fifth grade teacher Deedra Huff. Huff, who is in her 25th year teaching and

fourth at Harrison, has seen this building progress as a member of the initial planning committee for the project. Since the bond passed she has seen the building go up in stages, has got to help shape what her classroom was going to look like and now is putting the finishing touches on her room. “It’s been surreal because the problems that we have to deal with now is, ‘Oh, there’s too many tables for this new building.’…So having those kinds of problem and no longer having scarcity issues that we were dealing with for a long time is just surreal. It’s wonderful,” said Huff. While the school is currently the most notable change in the district, by September of 2019 the renovation of the pool will be complete in addition to various upgrades around the district.
