All they wanted for Christmas was ... Celebs unwrap stories of their favorite gifts from Yuletide past “The only thing that comes to mind is that one year, we decided we weren’t going to do expensive gifts for each other, and we had a $20 limit. My sister had donated the money on our behalf, so I bought a goat for a family. And that was my gift, that I bought a goat for somebody else, and that was probably my favorite Christmas. It really stripped everything down to us just being together, and it wasn’t about the frantic behavior of trying to get great gifts. It removed one whole side of it that I thought we would miss, and I didn’t miss it at all. It actually was a richer experience.” – Missy Peregrym of “Hawaii Five-0” on CBS
“It’s been like a trip somewhere with all of us – to Rome. We went to Rome. So something with traveling and being together, I like that.” – Talia Balsam of “Divorce” on HBO
“It might not make sense to anybody, but I really like a fresh pair of clean socks. When I was struggling for 12 or 13 years as an actor, there was a woman in my life who’s since passed away … and you could go to a corner in New York City where a guy was selling T-shirts and socks out of these carts. You could buy a pair of socks for a dollar, and when I’d have a really tough day, she’d say, ‘I’ve got a dollar. Go buy a pair of socks on the way home, and put them on before you go to bed.’ And it would bring joy to me. Just the simplest thing, and it never has left me.” – David Eigenberg of “Chicago Fire” on NBC
“I would have to say my son, because he was born on Dec. 6, and that’s close enough.” – Jennifer Nettles, seen recently on NBC’s “Dolly Parton’s Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love“
“I remember being a young kid, probably no more than eight years old, and I got new skateboard wheels – right when we had gone from clay wheels to polyurethane. We called them ‘Cadillac wheels’ back in the day, and I remember being so happy about that. It was one of the most joyous times in my life. I didn’t realize, of course, that we got sort of the low-end version and the generic ripoffs … but I didn’t care. That was something I really, really wanted.” – Dean Cain, seen recently on “Broadcasting Christmas” on Hallmark Channel
GRACENOTE - 2016 HOLIDAY PREVIEW pg 3
Cover Story By Jay Bobbin
This holiday season is offering its television traditions, and two of them are marking milestones. The movie classic “It’s a Wonderful Life” will get its two traditional NBC airings – the first on Saturday, Dec. 3, and the other in its long-familiar slot on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24 (both at 8 p.m. ET) – and this year marks the 70th anniversary of its theatrical release. The animated “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” falls a few years short of that, but its still-verysignificant 50th “birthday” will continue to be celebrated when NBC (its current network, though it’s moved around) shows it again Friday, Dec. 23 (8 p.m. ET).
Two timeless classics: ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ and ‘The Grinch’ mark merry milestones
Countless people cite director Frank Capra’s “It’s a Wonderful Life” as their favorite Christmas movie ever, but a major irony is that Capra reportedly was disappointed by the initial response from critics and audiences at the end of 1946 into 1947. Many reviewers seemed to sneer at its sentimentality, and though its box-office gross was reasonable for the time ($3.3 million), original distributor RKO ended up taking a loss on it. And though it received six Oscar nominations, it won only one of the awards, for its technical simulation of falling snow; however, Capra did receive a Golden Globe for it as best director. Television would play a huge role in cementing the legend of ne’er-do-well George Bailey (played, of course, by James Stewart) and the assist he gets from novice angel Clarence (Henry Travers) in seeing how life would have been for his loved ones and neighbors in Bedford Falls if he’d never existed. The picture fell out of copyright in the mid-1970s, and for the ensuing 20 years, any TV outlet could show it without having to pay for the rights to do so. Thus, virtually every hour on the hour from Christmas Eve into Christmas Day, “It’s a Wonderful Life” was starting somewhere on the dial. That changed in 1993, when Republic Pictures proved it had the screen rights to “The Greatest Gift,” the Philip Van Doren Stern short story on which the movie was based. Through that, the studio got ownership of “It’s a Wonderful Life” and struck a deal with NBC for yearly airings, which sometimes have involved testimonials by current network stars about the film, though it often is allowed to speak for itself by being aired without any embellishment.
OTHER AIRINGS: USA NETWORK DEC. 10 AT 8 P.M.; DEC. 11 AT 9 A.M.; DEC. 16 AT 8 P.M.
The show must go on While filming, a crew member dropped a giant piece of equipment but the cameras kept rolling and the actors carried on. The resulting scene is where a drunk Uncle Billy yells, “I’m all right, I’m alllll right!” after supposedly clambering into some garbage cans off-screen. Now that’s some great impromptu acting!
Who said that?
As seen on ... Commercials are constantly flashing in front of us and are one of the top advertising vehicles used today but product placement was even popular in 1946. Vaseline, Coca-Cola, Sweet Caporal, Bayer Aspirin and various cigarette brands were all prominently placed in Mr. Gower’s drugstore to catch the eye of the viewers.
pg 4 GRACENOTE - 2016 HOLIDAY PREVIEW
“Look, Daddy. Teacher says, ‘Every time a bell rings an angel gets his wings.’” – Zuzu Bailey
“What is it you want, Mary? What do you want? You want the moon? Just say the word and I’ll throw a lasso around it and pull it down. Hey. That’s a pretty good idea. I’ll give you the moon, Mary.” – George Bailey
OTHER AIRINGS: DEC. 10 AT 7:30 P.M. ON TBS; DEC. 14 AT 8 P.M. & 8:30 P.M. ON TNT
As for that “mean one, Mr. Grinch,” the popular Dr. Seuss story made its 1966 television debut on CBS, with horror-movie icon Boris Karloff supplying the voice of the title character. Since then, it has made the television rounds, going to TNT and TBS, then to what was The WB Network, then to ABC … and having landed there in 2015, NBC remains its home for at least this year and next, per a deal with Warner Bros. Television (which has the rights to most of the library of MGM, the studio that originated the special). Directed by celebrated animator Chuck Jones, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”– which director Ron Howard would turn into a live-action, Jim Carrey-starring 2000
movie – tells of the Grinch’s plan to steal the holiday and its inherent joy from the residents of Whoville, including young Cindy Lou (voiced by another cartoon veteran, June Foray), until they show him it’s not material gifts but the spirit of Christmas that matters most. One “Grinch” aspect cherished by those in the television know involves one of its composers: Albert Hague, who later would gain fame as an actor as music teacher Mr. Shorofsky in the movie and series versions of … well, “Fame.” Thanks to his efforts and those of his fellow “Grinch” talents, the program endures a half-century later, and the same goes for those who first gave the world a “Wonderful Life” seven decades ago.
Green with envy
The Grinch isn’t so scary ...
The classic song “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,” was sung by Thurl Ravenscroft, though his name wasn’t mentioned in the credits. He was also the well-known voice of Tony the Tiger in the Frosted Flakes commercials. Grr-r-reat job!
Before narrating this great classic, Boris Karloff played the role of Frankenstein’s monster in “Frankenstein” (1931) and reprised his role in “Bride of Frankenstein” (1935) and “Son of Frankenstein” (1939). He was considered one of the top horror film stars of his time, next to Bela Lugosi (“Dracula”). After “The Grinch” story was released as a record, Karloff received a Grammy for best recording for children. Oh, the irony!

Do you hear what I hear? TV trumpets the sound of these new holiday programs By Jay Bobbin and John Crook
DEC. 8 3 p.m. on Freeform Holiday Joy At just 15, Joy Hockstatter (Bailee Madison, “Good Witch”) already has put in a few years helping her dad hold their struggling family together since the death of Joy’s mother, so it’s not surprising she sometimes wishes she were part of the perfect Wellman family, who live just across the street. When she awakens to find that somehow this wish has come true, however, her happiness over her new life is muted by seeing her “old” family taking a serious turn for the worse in this new 2016 holiday fantasy. PREMIERE
DEC. 8 Crackle SuperMansion: War on Christmas In this decidedly unconventional holiday special, the endlessly bickering superheroes from this stop-motion animated comedy series must set aside their differences to save Christmas, when the holiday is threatened by Mr. Skibumpers (voice of Jim Parsons, ``The Big Bang Theory’’), an interstellar imp, and a real-life Santa Claus (voice of Gary Anthony Williams), who is going through a serious existential crisis. Voice actors Bryan Cranston, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Green, Jillian Bell and Tucker Gilmore are among the series regulars reprising their characters for this special. NEW
DEC. 14 8 p.m. on The CW Top 12 Greatest Christmas Movies of All Time Host Dean Cain readily admits his favorite seasonal film is “It’s a Wonderful Life,” but he’s not giving up whether it tops the list in this new special. Chances are good that if a classic yuletide movie is your viewing preference for this time of year, it’ll place somewhere among this dozen, from which familiar scenes are excerpted. Other good bets: “White Christmas,” “Miracle on 34th Street,” “A Christmas Story” and some version of “A Christmas Carol.” NEW
DEC. 19 8 p.m. on NBC America’s Got Talent It’s not the usual time of year for this show to appear, but since the holiday is made for welcoming familiar faces, why not? Some of the standouts of the contest’s past season return for this new special – including the winner, young singer-songwriter Grace VanderWaal – along with such veterans of the show as Jackie Evancho and Terry Fator. Host Nick Cannon and judges Mel B, Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum and Howie Mandel are on hand. Pentatonix also is featured. NEW
DEC. 14 8 p.m. on NBC A Pentatonix Christmas Special Used to being guests on others’ holiday shows, the members of the Grammywinning a cappella singing group instead get the chance to play the hosts in this new special. They certainly can draw from seasonal selections they’re familiar with, given this year’s release of their third album, “A Pentatonix Christmas.” Reba McEntire and Kelly Clarkson are among the announced guests, and “other surprises” are promised. NEW
DEC. 20 8 p.m. on The CW Terry Crews Saves Christmas You – and Santa – didn’t know Crews was needed to salvage the holiday, right? In this new miniseries airing on four consecutive nights, the “Brooklyn NineNine” co-star steps in to give pointers to someone who thought he or she was ready to stage a Yuletide celebration ... but, ultimately, not so much. Crews brings along a team of experts in food and design, prepped and ready to help each of the featured citizens host a Christmas to remember. SERIES PREMIERE

Prune-stuffed roast loin of pork (Arrosto di Maiale alle Prugne) Courtesy of Lidia Bastianich from “Lidia’s Mastering the Art of Italian Cuisine” (Knopf) Serves: 8 Ingredients: * 8 ounces dried pitted prunes * 1/2 cup bourbon * 3-pound boneless center pork loin roast, trimmed * 10 fresh sage leaves * Kosher salt * Freshly ground black pepper * 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil * 1/2 cup finely diced carrot * 1/2 cup finely diced celery * 1/2 cup roughly chopped onion * 4 garlic cloves, crushed and peeled * 2 1/2 cups chicken stock In a small bowl, soak the prunes in bourbon 1 hour. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. Drain the prunes, and set four of them aside along with the soaking liquid. To stuff the roast: Use a sharp knife to cut a 1-inch pocket along the entire length of the eye, around the top half the roast, like forming a tunnel. Cut from both sides of the roast until you cut through. Stuff three quarters of the soaked prunes into the slit in the roast, and tie the roast securely with kitchen twine at 2-inch intervals. Thread the sage leaves underneath the ties on either side of the roast. Season the roast generously with salt and pepper, and rub it with the olive oil. Put the roast in a large roasting pan, and roast 15 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 400 degrees. Tilt the roasting pan, and spoon off excess fat. Scatter the carrot, celery, onion, and garlic around the roast. Roast an additional 15 minutes. Add the reserved prunes and soaking liquid, and roast 10 minutes. Pour the stock into the pan, and continue cooking, basting the roast occasionally with the pan juices, until a meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the roast registers 145 degrees, about 30 minutes more. Remove the roast to a platter. Pass the contents of the pan through a food mill fitted with the fine disk into a small bowl. (Alternatively, strain the liquid through a sieve, pressing on the vegetables to extract as much liquid as possible and to force some of the vegetables through the sieve.) Skim all fat from the surface of the sauce. The sauce should be thick enough to coat a spoon lightly. If not, transfer it to a small saucepan and reduce a bit more. Season the sauce with salt and pepper, if needed. Cut the meat into 1/4-inch slices, and serve it with the sauce.
Spruce up your home for the holidays with these crafty ideas Here’s a way to lose the shirt off your back for a good cause! Upcycle plaid or flannel shirts the kids or Dad have outgrown into menswear-inspired ornaments to add a rustic, outdoorsy touch to your tree. Also a good way to memorialize that favorite shirt Grandpa used to wear: Materials needed: * old shirts * foam balls * straight pins * floral wire * scissors Steps: * Find vintage shirts patterns that work with your holiday theme. * Cut all the seams off the shirt, including the collar, cuffs and yolk. Then, take off the buttons. This will ensure you get as much fabric as you can. * Use different-sized foam balls and straight pins. * Lay out a piece of the fabric. Roll one of the balls with the piece of fabric to find out how big the strips need to be to cover the foam. Cut the fabric this length so you have a big strip. * Fold the strip up lengthwise four times and cut different widths. * Take one end of the fabric and wrap it around the ball and pin it. Continue this process until the entire ball is covered. A second set of hands is helpful. * Use floral wire to adhere the ball to garland, a wreath or a tree.
More ornamental ideas Try a fresh twist: Fresh fruit has long been used to decorate Christmas trees; the bright pop of color and fresh scent is hard to beat. This year, instead of studding the orange with cloves, opt for a more fashion-forward approach and use tacks. To attach the ribbon for hanging, cut two shallow slits around the orange’s navel then slide through a loop of leopard-print ribbon. Useful for more than just treats for Santa: Metal cookie cutters are too pretty to keep hidden away in a drawer, especially if they’re family-hand-me-downs. After you’ve finished your holiday baking, back the ornaments with colorful paper and put your favorites on display. Here’s a bright idea: Don’t toss old light bulbs – instead, give them new life as glittering tree ornaments. A few coats of metallic spray paint and a ribbon for hanging are all you need. Smaller light bulbs work best grouped together in odd numbers, while larger lightbulbs are best as single ornaments. Get in the game: Get the kiddos crafting to make a few of these playful ornaments that are a snap to make using Scrabble letters glued onto a strip of colorful ribbon. Use the letters to spell out holiday sayings or family members’ names. Courtesy of HGTV.com

And whatever happened to these “classics”? Am I the only one thinking about the good ol’ holiday days? Like back (30 years ago – eek!) when Peter came home to surprise his family for Christmas and everyone in the house awakens to the smell of Folgers coffee? The best part of waking up ... ah! Some of our childhood favorites are those that don’t seem to get their glittering moment under the yearly TV tree anymore. So TV-programming Santa, if you’re reading this, we promise we’ve been good all year (except for maybe that one time we tapped the bumper of our boss’s car – sorry!) so please bring back “Bugs Bunny’s Looney Christmas Tales” and “A Garfield Christmas Special.” Hey, our hearts and choice of music may forever be stuck in the ‘80s but at least our hair is not! 20 YEARS OF TURBO-MAN! Jingle All the Way (1996) When to watch: Freeform – Dec. 5, 16, 17, 22 & 23 It may not make many critics’ lists of favorite Christmas movies, but this comedy that celebrates it’s 20th anniversary this year will ring lots of sleigh bells, especially for those of us who have either waited until the last minute to shop, fought for a high-demand toy or both. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays the hapless dad trying to snag a hot action figure for his son, with Sinbad as another father bent on the same thing. Phil Hartman – darn, we miss him – is a hoot as the “perfect” neighbor of Ah-nuld’s character. The lesson to be learned here?
