Pay It Forward Cottage Grove Oregon was started with the premise of sharing donated items from the community members and donors back into the community. All donations received are posted for FREE on our Facebook page and given back to members or the community who requests or needs that item. We have a Free Event that members can pick out as many items as they’d like every other Sunday. We are a registered 501(c)(3) nonproďŹ t recognized by the state of Oregon. We also provide resource pages, directing members in the community to other programs that may be helpful or useful. We donate any extra items that we receive to local organizations. We also do a regular prom dress, coat and Halloween costume drive and collect Christmas gifts for families who cannot afford them. We provide food boxes and clothing for families in need. Any and all donations are gladly and gratefully accepted. All of the administrators of the Facebook page and warehouse are volunteers. We are currently searching for a warehouse that would better suit our need for space. We are trying to better our community and lives of our neighbors.

FREE DIGITAL TELEVISION
South Lane Television, Inc.
In the early days of television, most TV stations serving Oregon were located in Portland. And reception from Portland was extremely poor in Cottage Grove. With the hopes of devising a plan for better reception, a group of local television enthusiasts met over coffee to discuss how members of the community could develop a system that would provide better TV pictures in Cottage Grove. What emerged was a community non-profit they organized in 1957 as South Lane Television, Inc. The new SLTV Board set out to raise money for an engineering study that determined Hansen Butte, located a mile southeast of Cottage Grove, was the ideal point to receive TV signals and translate those signals to new channels that could be easily picked up in and around Cottage Grove. A successful fund drive followed and the fledgling board was able to purchase the necessary equipment to put the first three stations on the air. Over the years, SLTV has steadily improved and expanded its service. Today, the Cottage Grove system has grown to 36 channels, the London Springs system now has 14 channels, and Dorena/Culp Creek now has 8 channels – making South Lane Television one of the largest and most technically advanced translator operations in the Country. The best part is that the service is absolutely free! All viewers need is an antenna. In town, a good (never the cheapest!), indoor antenna may work fine, but for the best performance, a good outdoor antenna is recommended. For more challenged reception areas you may need an amplified set-top antenna or outdoor antenna. But once you have your antenna hooked up, the free TV just keeps on coming! The cost savings compared to cable or satellite services often amounts to more than $1,000 a year! South Lane Television and its volunteer board has been with you for over six decades and is always watching for new ways to improve our service to the community. These messages are brought to you as a public service by South Lane Television. Our goal is to continue serving the community with the highest quality free television service possible.

YONCALLA HISTORICAL SOCIETY The Yoncalla Historical Society was founded in October 1994. The mission of the Society is to encourage the restoration and preservation of the history of Yoncalla, Oregon. It is our endeavor to provide educational opportunities regarding Yoncalla’s history to present and future generations with the hope and intent that the knowledge will be passed on to other interested persons. Recent accomplishments of the Historical Society are the production of a Yoncalla Historic Walking Tour guide, the production of a series of historic handouts, and the erection of a sign in the George Burt Park in Yoncalla. (Mr. Burt donated a portion of that claim for the City of Yoncalla, for the O&C Railroad and its depot, and for the city cemetery. In recognition of his generosity and civic dedication, he was unanimously elected the first mayor of our city). In 2014, the Yoncalla Historical Society published its second book, Yoncalla Yesterday Revisited. The photo shows the cover of the second book. The book is a follow-up to the first Society publication, Yoncalla Yesterday (copy righted in 2001). Both books have articles and stories about local families, events, and factors that have made Yoncalla what it is today. The authors are current and former residents of the area. Some are members of families that have lived in and around Yoncalla for generations. Do you have ties to Yoncalla? Here’s where you can find more about your roots. Are you an enthusiast of history? These books document the history of an Oregon town, and its connection to the wider world. Do you enjoy a good read? Now you can laugh over the “Saga of the Drunken Cow” and learn “The Christmas Lesson of 1954.” Unfortunately, the first book is currently out of print. (We are working on digitizing it, so it will be available in the future.) You can enjoy it at the libraries in Yoncalla, Drain, and Cottage Grove. Those libraries also have copies of the second book. And you can still buy Yoncalla Yesterday Revisited! The cost is $30.00 per book, and $5.00 for shipping. Contact Yoncalla_Historical@yahoo.com or find us on Facebook (Yoncalla Historical Society) to order a copy. The dues for Society membership are $10.00 per year. The Society is a 501(c)(3) (non-profit) organization, so any donations are tax deductible. The Society meets the third Thursday of every month at 3:15pm in the Yoncalla City Hall. All are welcome to attend. Membership fees and donations can be mailed to the: Yoncalla Historical Society, P.O. Box 125, Yoncalla, OR 97499.

The Cottage Grove Carousel Dream Background Information In 1995, Judy Cash, a local registered nurse, received an unexpected inheritance and decided to spend the money on something she really wanted and that something was -- a carousel! She located an operating carousel in Virginia that was for sale. She paid a visit, saw it operate, purchased it, had it shipped to Cottage Grove and stored it in her barn -- with the desire of making a gift to the citizens of her hometown. An operating carousel in Cottage Grove, Oregon, has been her dream from the very beginning and one she wants to share with carousel lovers in South Lane County and beyond. The community’s first attempt to make her dream a reality began a year later, in 1996. The goal was to resurrect, refurbish, and build a home for it to bring it to life once again for people of all ages, for generations to come. The City of Cottage Grove embraced the idea and paid for the necessary studies. The project was shelved by a lack of agreement on ownership and a location.
Friends of the Cottage Grove Carousel 2.0 In 2014, the Friends of the Cottage Grove Carousel organization was resurrected as part of the Chamber Tourism Committee’s efforts to attract more visitors and boost the local economy. At this time the carousel is being refurbished by volunteers at Cottage Grove’s WOE fairgrounds. The restoration project requires replacement of its many light sockets, re-engineering and replacing the crank shaft bearings, and a great deal of woodwork and painting to bring the carousel back to life. The Friends group has partnered with others to keep the dream alive and make it a reality. Local residents and two advanced art classes at Cottage Grove High School are refurbishing the animals. University of Oregon ad-
vertising majors are developing a targeted promotional campaign for the project. The campaign includes creating an interactive website, a video and targeting potential millennial donors throughout the Pacific Northwest. Four donors in the Friends group have underwritten the cost of professional grant writers and fundraisers. They have also paid for legal expenses to formally restore the Friends of the Cottage Grove Carousel organization as a 501c3 nonprofit organization. Two Main Street locations have been identified within and right next
to Cottage Grove’s Historic Downtown District as suitable sites for the carousel’s new home. Our preferred site is the former Herb’s Car Care Center on the corner of Main St. and Hwy 99. This site is ideal to connect the historic downtown district with Bohemia Park and the Row River Trailhead and could serve as a highly visible visitor information center with ample parking.
Current Fundraising Efforts We hired Christina Lund to help us with fundraising and grant-writing. The first formal fundraising campaign
is a “No Show Banquet Dinner” -- a make-believe event for a very real cause. We’ve planned a series of carousel-themed prize drawings for the remainder of 2017. The prizes are: 1) A beautiful San Francisco Music Box Company collectable musical carousel under a domed mantle. 2) A colorful, full-size carousel rocking horse. Our group’s biggest challenge is raising the estimated $1-million dollars. The money covers restoration plus purchasing and remodeling a forever home for this antique Allan-Hershell designed carousel.
HELP NEEDED NOW! A million bucks is a lot of money! We recently learned Judy has lung cancer and is seeking treatment. We want to do all we can to make her 20-year-long dream a reality! We invite families and organizations to join our fundraising efforts and be memorialized when the project is complete. We are also open to opportunities to partner with investors to secure the property and with any business that would be a good fit to co-locate in the building with the carousel as the centerpiece. To make a tax-exempt donation make checks payable to EBID Carousel Project and mail to Friends of the Cottage Grove Carousel at P.O. Box 883, Cottage Grove, OR 97424. For additional information or to volunteer send an email to cgcarousel@gmail.com or call Don Williams at 541-942-4752.
