MEET OUR NEW TRAINER, Ava Giminski! Portraits by Hilary Running

Hello! My name is Ava and I am the new Coulee Region Humane Society Certified Professional Dog Trainer. I have been training dogs in the Coulee Region since 2013 and look forward to helping more pet parents and their four-legged companions! A little about me: I have had dogs throughout my life and have worked with all different breeds from the smallest teacup Yorkshire Terriers to the largest of Irish Wolfhounds. I have four furry family members of my own. “Remi” is a 9 year old poodle/bichon mix who helped build my basic training and trick training skills over the years. “Johnny” is my 2 year old German Shepherd/Poodle mix who has served often as a demo dog in many of my Canine Good Citizen Evaluations. “Ben Nevis” is my 1 year old, energetic and extremely intelligent Border Collie who has completed Junior Obedience and Agility classes at CRHS. And finally, our newest addition to the pack is little miss Frankie. I adopted Frankie, a Cavapoochon puppy, from CRHS in February 2019 and couldn’t be happier with her. I am here to be a resource for you and your family. Whether you’ve adopted from CRHS or not, I want to help you and your dog have the best possible experience. I can help with a wide range of objectives, whether you are wanting to teach basic commands or need to work through extreme reactivity issues. I’m here to help!

What is WAGS?

The WAGS program began in April 2017. WAGS stands for Working with Animals to Gain Socialization. The program is a partnership with Prairie du Chien Correctional Facility and Coulee Region Humane Society to help provide training to shelter dogs.

How does it work?

Dogs typically spend 6 to 8 weeks in the program depending on their specific

needs and training progress. The inmates wanting to participate as trainers are required to go through an extensive application and interview process; it is a privilege for them to train the dogs. The dogs learn basic obedience skills and commands. The trainers are responsible for feeding, walking, and cleaning up after the dogs 24/7 as well as making sure they get adequate exercise- often

After the dogs graduate from the WAGS program they return to CRHS to find their forever homes. The program helps increase the adoptablity of the dogs while allowing inmates the opportunity to give back to their community. We’ve also discovered an additional benefit of the program. Many of our WAGS graduates are quickly adopted by staff members of PDCI who grow fond of each dog we send. We are excited to carry on this program and continue changing lives at both ends of the leash.

Resident superstar: Quinn

Age: 9 years old Gender: Male, Neutered Specifics: Current on vaccinations Personality: Quinn is a sweet and mellow boy looking for a quiet home to retire in! He’s 9 years old, neutered, and up to date on vaccinations.

The Cargill Room at

The Waterfront Restaurant and Tavern 332 Front Street South | La Crosse WI 54601

Special thank you to our event sponsors!

Quinn was previously house trained but has recently been having accidents. He will need a consistent routine in his new home to get back on track. Crate training can be a great tool when house training! He may do well with another older/calm dog. He does not appreciate young bouncy dogs in his space. Quinn is fearful of men and would prefer to live in a female only home. Due to his fearfulness he is looking for an adult only home.

Judy Rusch

He is an affectionate boy who needs a quiet home where he can feel safe and at easy. Once he feels comfortable he loves to play with toys, especially squeaky ones! He will even drop it on command!

What is a Resident Superstar at CRHS? A Resident Superstar at the Coulee Region Humane Society is a featured animal available for adoption that is having a difficult time finding his or her forever home. These pets have typically been waiting to be adopted longer than any other animal at the shelter, and oftentimes have special needs and require certain accommodations. Our Resident Superstars are wonderful, loving pets that simply need a little help. Their adoption fees are also reduced in an effort to encourage adoption.

Join our team of Foster Care Parents today!

Hundreds of lives have been saved so far because of the Coulee Region Humane Society’s Foster Care program. In 2018 alone, more than 600 animals were cared for by our 82 foster families! Our foster program continues to grow each year and we are always in need of more foster care parents to care for orphaned kittens, pregnant mother cats, and nursing mother cats. We also need foster care parents for dogs that need behavior modification, time to recover from surgery, or other reasons. By joining our team of foster families, you can directly impact the life of a shelter animal. Foster families are also invited to join our new Facebook group, “CRHS Foster Parents” to share photos and videos of their experiences fostering for CRHS. It’s also a great way to connect with other CRHS supporters! Learn more about fostering at couleehumane.com. For questions, contact our Foster Coordinator, Arika Arndt, at arika.arndt@couleehumane.com. www.couleehumane.com
