Past & Present

Saturday 4th December is the centenary of the unveiling of Thetford’s War Memorial. Each year the memorial is the focus for the town’s Remembrance Sunday service, drawing a large crowd now as in previous years. Little of the architecture surrounding the market place has changed since the past photo was taken. Past Image: David Osborne Collection NMS, Present Photo: ©Neil James Media

Probus Club members heard a talk from Jim Stebbings of the Dereham Club, telling the story of the Lusitania, known to those who knew and loved her as ‘Lucy’. He called his talk “Lies, Deception and Conspiracy”. The Royal Mail Ship Lusitania was launched in 1906 during the arms race between Germany and Britain, her construction being funded by a loan from the Admiralty who demanded alterations in her design to allow for wartime service, although she was never armed. She was designed to be luxurious and fast, to enable Cunard to capture transatlantic trade from German competition and in she riefl held the lue i and for the fastest crossing, taking less than 5 days. When she left New York for Liverpool on her 202nd crossing in May 1915, German ports were under Allied blockade and as a reprisal U-boats were patrolling the waters around Britain with orders to sink shi s showing ritish flags ro ided the were carrying arms. Southwest of Ireland she was attacked and torpedoed without being searched and sank in 20 minutes, 1198 people dying. There were aspects of the whole incident which led to people questioning the actions of Winston

Churchill, First Lord of the Admiralty, who was tr ing to get the to oin the fight against erman should she ha e sailed in the first place? She was faster than any U-boat, so why did she travel at reduced speed? Why did no escort arrive to accompany her through the U-boat zone? Was this a contrived propaganda incident? An interesting and thought-provoking talk. MCP HP Advert 11.18.qxp_Layout 1 19/11/2018 09:41 Page 1

A new product has come onto the market to help people who are allergic to cats. It does not treat the human, it treats the cat. Its called Purina LiveClear and it is a revolutionary cat food proven to reduce allergens on cat hair and dander by an average of 47% starting from the third week of feeding. All cats produce a common allergen called Fe1 d1 in their saliva. When they eat LiveClear a key protein sourced from eggs safely binds to the Fe1 d1 and neutralises it. The Fe1 d1 allergen is a sticky protein which attaches to every surface and can remain there for a long time. Therefore you can maintain your current cat allergen management regime to allow Liveclear to add that e tra it of hel t comes in two fla ours salmon and turkey and is available for kittens, adult cats and cats over 7 years of age. With Christmas approaching, and if you have recently adopted a kitten, please be aware of certain hazards that can be dangerous. Christmas trees are especially tempting to a kitten to climb. Although it may appear funny, it really isn't. A few years ago a kitten of 15 weeks old hung itself on the lights on the tree while the owners were out. Therefore make sure your tree is in a room that the kitten cannot access unless you are there with him/her. It might be an idea to put the tree up without decorating it for a few days to allow the kitten to get used to it being there. But once the tree is decorated, you need to be extra careful. Kittens think the low hanging baubles are there for their entertainment and may knock them off and break them which could harm kittens or cats. We do not home any cats of kittens or cats between 18th December and 4th January. This is because when you have a busy household with people coming in and out, it can be very unsettling for a new cat or kitten. You can come to us and reserve a cat or kitten, but they cannot go to their new home until after the festivities are over.
