Thetford Flooding Issues Explored

New Sites Announced As Flood Alliance Marks First Anniversary

At a meeting marking the first anniversary of the Norfolk Strategic Flooding Alliance (NSFA) and the work already done by its members, a second tranche of 11 potential flooding sites to be examined by the Alliance has been announced which includes six locations in Thetford.

After a year in which Alliance members have carried out over 30,000 tasks to reduce flood risk in Norfolk, from removing drain blockages to investing in a new pumping station at Islington, West Norfolk and during which the NSFA has adopted a Norfolk wide strategy to enable a countywide response to flooding, the Alliance’s members have announced a new tranche of sites to build on the success of the NSFA’s first year. As part of its ongoing programme of work, the NSFA identifies sites across Norfolk that are regularly at risk of flooding and tasks its members with inspecting the sites, understanding what issues cause flooding at location, and identifying what work would minimise or mitigate the local flooding risk. The Thetford sites being examined by the NSFA’s members have been named as: Bridge Street, Burrell Way Industrial Estate, Fairfields, Gloucester Way, Bracken Road and Bury Road.

that has been made not just in joining up, but in identifying solid solutions for locations around Norfolk, but we’ve got to keep this momentum going. That’s why we’re announcing a second tranche of sites and pressing ministers to provide the funding needed to protect the people of Norfolk from flood risk, and will continue to do so”. The announcement of the second tranche follows on from the work on the first, which has identified a range of work that could make the initial 16 sites more resilient in the event of flooding. In the event of flooding, residents should ring 0344 800 8013.

Once work examining these sites is complete, the NSFA’s members begin sourcing funding to carry out these works, including from the members themselves where appropriate or via national funding schemes. Lord Richard Dannatt, Chair of the NSFA, said: “While we’ve had no repeat in 2021 of the Christmas Eve floods, the memory of them remains fresh and still serves as a reminder of why all of us in Norfolk need to work closely together to respond not just to flooding, but to the risk of flooding. I’m proud of everything the Alliance has AKFS Advert.qxp_Layout 1 28/05/2021 16:23 Page 1 achieved in the last year, and the real progress
