Cleveland / Counties Interclub Competition This years interclub competition will be held on the 25th and 26th of September. Please put these dates in your diary, after last year we need as many people as possible fishing for us to regain the trophy. Cleveland are hosting this years event, and they always put on a great event for us all. This is a great fun competition, and after last year our reputation is at stake.
Counties “Biff ya shit out” Surfcasting Competition Last year saw the return of a surfcasting competition to our annual callendar. This year it’s back, bigger and better and with a new name. This year the competition will be held on the 20th of November, so get that date in your diary. Dig out your surfcasting gear and get out for some practice.

Fisheries Review Summary As you are probably aware the consultation period for the review of the snapper 8 fishery is now underway. Also under review is the Gurnard 1 fishery, which covers the top half of the North Island, east and west coasts. We encourage everyone to have their say on this by emailing in a submission. As a club we will be making a submission, but the more people that make a submission the better. There is lots of information in the links on the next page, but the important bits that you really need to know are below. There are four alternative proposals made in the SNA 8 consultation document. All four proposals make no change to the current recreational limits. The recreational allowance is increased, but this is to cover what we are already taking not an increase to the current limits. The total allowable commercial catch (TACC) is currently 1300t. Option 1 is an increase to the TACC of 300t to 1600t, a 23% increase. Option 2 is an increase to the TACC of 650t to 1950t, a 50% increase Option 3 is an increase to the TACC of 975t to 2275t, a 75% increase Option 4 is an increase to the TACC of 1300t to 2600t, a 100% increase This fishery was fished almost to destruction. In 2005 snapper stocks had reduced to just 8% of their original, unfished, biomass. Below 10% is getting into the realms of ecosystem collapse. It has taken the last 16 years of reduced commercial catch and bottom trawling exclusion zones, to protect Maui dolphins, for the area to recover to its current level -estimated at 54% of the original biomass. The higher increases to the TACC proposed could seriously risk damaging the fishery again. The GUR 1 consultation document has three options. There has never been a total allowable catch (TAC) set for this fishery and although a total allowable commercial catch (TACC) has been set it has never been achieved. In the period 2016- 2020 commercial fishers only landed 35% of their allowable catch. Because of this all the three options involve introducing a TAC and reducing the TACC.

If you agree that some of these proposals are potentially disastrous for the West Coast fishery then please email Fisheries New Zealand and tell them. Do it NOW, as submissions close on 27th July at 5pm.
Obviously you can decide which options you think are best, but we would urge you to support option 1 for SNA8 and option 3 for GU1. These are the most cautious approaches and give the fishery its best chance to improve. Commercial interests will be lobbying hard for the opposite outcome and they are well funded with large budgets and legal teams behind them. Please make a submission and have your say.
If you can write your own submission that would be great, but feel free to copy and paste the submission below.
Submission on the Snapper 8 and Gurnard 1 fisheries As a recreational fisher I have an interest in these fisheries, and in their well-being. The snapper fishery is recovering from almost being fished to destruction and I would like to see this be a long term recovery. The sensible approach to the fishery is to go with option 1 of the SNA 8 review document. If this proves to be too cautious an approach it can be reviewed in the future. If one of the less cautious options is chosen and proves to be damaging to the fishery it could take many years to recover again. Decades of hard work rebuilding the fishery could be thrown away in a few years if the wrong decision is made now. I believe that the same cautious approach is called for in the gurnard 1 review, so option 3 of the GUR 1 review document should be chosen.

Review of SNA 8 Snapper Fishery Fisheries New Zealand (FNZ) is reviewing the fisheries sustainability measures for SNA 8 for the 2021 October fishing year.
Why are we reviewing the SNA 8 fishery? Snapper numbers are increasing A scientific assessment in 2020/2021 found that the abundance of snapper has increased. Following cuts made to the catch limits in 2005, the fishery has recovered from historical lows. Default target 40% SB0
Because of this, we’re reviewing settings and allowances
Soft limit
With more fish in the water, we’re reviewing the catch settings for the fishery to make sure they’re set appropriately while maintaining sustainable use of the fishery.
Hard limit
Annual trend in spawning biomass relative to the 40% SB0 interim target biomass level for the base model. The line represents the median and the shaded area represents the 95% credible interval. The dashed line represents the interim target level. The red and yellow dashed lines represent the hard and soft biomass limits. Find more scientific and other fisheries management information on our website: www.fish.govt.nz
What’s happening next? Public consultation began on 23 June 2021 and ends on 27 July 2021 at 5 pm. We’d like to hear your feedback on the proposed options, which may include changes to: o o o o
Catch settings (catch limits and allowances) Deemed values Recreational daily bag limit The management target for abundance

Minimum legal size Fishing method restrictions Closed areas

Every Kiwi needs to see this.. An amazing eye opener. A very well researched and presented doco! thanks to all for making it.....it is well beyond time that the QMS was taken out the back and shot and from those ashes build an actual "world leading" example of fisheries management. The formula for a better future is already available...check out... RESCUE FISH Great doco guys. I encourage everyone to watch fully. Excellent eye opening doco. Im fully in support of an overhaul of the quota management system, as a kiwi im not sure where to go from here. Im sure 95% of kiwis are also in support... what do we need to do to help?
