Counties Sport Fishing Club We are a family friendly West coast club based in Waiuku, just south of Auckland. With around 1000 members, trailer boats make up the majority of our fleet. Celebrating fishing of all kinds, from the humble Gurnard to the mighty Broadbill. Club waters span from Raglan north head to Kaipara south head and include the Manukau harbour and Waikato river.

To join the club click New and Used Boats, Motors, Accessories, Servicing They have a reputation for good quality workmanship, honesty and reliability. The onsite technicians are experts in Mercury, Etech, Evinrude & Johnson servicing and repairs as well as Yamaha, Suzuki and Honda. They can also fit new or used outboard engines and do trailer repairs, springs, winches and rollers.

Bits & Bobs SNA8 Review We have a very interesting Stock assessment conversation beginning with MPI. The SNA8 area is coming up for review. As you may or may not know, the SNA8 is the largest in the country covering the entire west coast of the north Island. Ken Barry is assembling a team of recreational stakeholders to represent our interests in the upcoming MPI workshops. He’ll be keen to hear from anybody from Ahipara to Cape Egmont, who’s keen to be part of our team. The really interesting thing about SNA8 is that it’s been doing extremely well, looks to be better than 40% of its original biomass, and is heading very quickly toward the 50% (B50) mark that we are now promoting with Rescue fish. This raises some interesting challenges for MPI; Namely firstly, why has SNA8 been so successful?, secondly, what can be learned from SNA8 and transferred to help other regions, thirdly, just because it’s there, doesn’t mean it has to be caught! SNA8 could be a flagship example of a what a B50 fishery looks and feels like, it needs to be cherished, and copied not fished down. Taken from the March 2021 NZSFC presidents report

Counties Classic 2021 The 2021 Counties Classic was very nearly a victim of the Auckland lock down, but thanks to some last minute changes by the organising committee and Auckland going back to level 1 for the weekend as hoped it went ahead. A huge thanks to everyone involved in organising this event, which is always a big job but was even tougher this year. Also a massive thank you to all our sponsors, without whom this event could not happen. There are literally too many to mention individually here, but please take a look on our facebook page to see them all. Due to the competition starting under level 2 restrictions the usual pre-competition briefing and calcutta auction could not take place. There was also no weigh in on Friday, except for marlin. All fish from Friday and Saturday were combined for the Saturday weigh in. All the spot prizes and gate prizes from Friday were moved onto the Saturday and Sunday prizegiving, and as usual there were some pretty amazing prizes on offer. Weather over the weekend was very kind to us, with fishing possible off the coast on all three days of the competition -although it definitely got better as the weekend went on. As usual there were some very good fish weighed and tagged during the competition. The Striped Marlin category got off to a good start, with the first fish being weighed in on the Friday and weighing a very respectable 129.2kg. This went on to get second place for weighed striped marlin. Full results for the competition can be found on the following pages.

Marlin Weight, T & R we are experiencing an outstanding summer of Game fishing with the number of marlin and other game fish being seen in some regions unlike many of us have seen for quite some time if at all. Some interesting conversations have arisen around release stats and obligations and questioning the need for Tagging. It’s time to seek direction from our membership, but first some facts for context. The current expectation to tag and release 50% of Marlin caught by clubs, along with a minimum weight of 90Kgs comes from the Billfish Moratorium that came into force in 1987 and was last signed in 1996, so expired in effect in 1997. To date, Marlin remain outside of the QMS and Marlin caught in NZ EEZ are not allowed to be sold in NZ. Contrary to popular opinion, the 90kg minimum weight is the average weight of the striped marlin caught in the Bay of islands between 1926 and 1986. It is also useful to realise the average weight declined considerably over that time. There was no commercial fishery until WW2 and in the early seasons the average weight in the BOI was up to 120 kg but declined after the commercial harvest started in the 1950's and increased over the ensuing years. The moratorium was a result of agitation by the clubs as both catches and average weight declined. Striped marlin are believed to be sexually mature at 60-70kg. The requirement for Tagging was to support research into the movements and distribution of Striped Marlin. There have been 26,360 striped marlin tagged with the Hallprint Stainless Steel S/S tag for 91 recaptures (0.35%) and 2026 striped marlin tagged with the Hallprint nylon tag for 4 recaptures (0.20%). Of these 478 were double tagged, mainly from top charter boats, with a tag of each type for 3 recaptures (0.63%). All 3 of these striped marlin had the S/S tag on recapture, one of which had both tags. So far the longest term recapture for a NZ striped marlin is 4 years with a S/S tag. To date the nylon tags have not out-performed the S/S tags.

Finally. There has been a number of discussions on social media about doing away with tagging, dragging ourselves into the 21st century, and using an app for recording releases. The idea of using apps for recording recreational fishing records has been around for a while and is often touted by the commercial sector as the answer to their concern that they don’t know what recreational fishers catch. The reality is that the NIWA Recreational Harvest Estimation model has received global academic acclaim for its accuracy and academics have confirmed gives a very good estimate of what’s been caught by recreational fishers. We have resisted efforts to impose compulsory recreational catch recording, on the basis that it is unlikely to yield more statistically significant information, due to the difficulties of maintaining compliance in the extremities of our coastline, amongst other things.

On the one hand, the adoption of electronic catch recording for Gamefish may incorrectly signal recreational acceptance of mandatory catch recording. On the other hand, we do away with the perceived traumatisation of fish by spiking them with a tag and sending them away “to an uncertain fate.” The research contradicts this assertion, and in fact shows that Marlin are in fact a very hardy fish and have a very high chance of survival post tagging and release. The other upside is that released fish can be recorded and released, and there is no chance of the tag card being lost or forgotten. The final issue is that the notion of allowing untagged released fish to be eligible for NZSFC awards and trophies was voted down at the 2017 NZSFC AGM. Has this direction from the membership changed? So Questions for discussion and feedback; 1. Is the 90kg minimum weight requirement for Striped Marlin still relevant? 2. Should the 90kg minimum weight stay in force, how should clubs treat sub 90kg weighed marlin? a. Celebrate the Anglers fish and respect their reasons for wanting to weigh it? b. Weigh for Angler- but no catch card, Weigh board or Social media posting? c. Record the fish for numbers recording purposes without further celebration? d. Other? 3. Should we NZSFC continue to require Tagging for National Awards and Trophies? a. Note that i. clubs have always been able to recognise fish without Tags ii. Clubs that choose not to recognise untagged fish, may not be reporting un-tagged fish, which underreports our release performance. b. Should the NZSFC implement an App for recording released fish without the need for Tagging? c.
