56th ACM Awards: Radio Reacts
With performances spread across multiple venues, and in-house viewers limited to socially distanced healthcare heroes looking on from the balcony, last night’s (4/18) 56th ACM Awards telecast was not the first of its kind. Therefore, radio pros nationwide were familiar with what to expect and still came away surprised and with a few questions. Here are some of their observations. Midwest Corporate Country Brand Strategist Tom Baldrica: The night was full of solid performances without a real clunker in the Tom Baldrica bunch. Some of my standouts were Eric Church, Keith Urban, Chris Stapleton with Miranda Lambert, and Carly Pearce with Lee Brice. “I Hope You’re Happy Now” winning Single of the Year in a loaded category was a real dark horse winner. I thought this was the best it’s been done in years, if not ever. The energy, production values and movement around the Lois “Double city all created a larger-than-life experience, and L” Lewis it looked and sounded like a million dollars! iHeartMedia KNIX/Phoenix MD/midday personality Lois “Double L” Lewis: Mickey Guyton was an incredible first-time host and a complete pro. She was perfectly poised with perfectly placed sass, which is a tricky thing to balance. Keith Urban is too much for me; I rewound that one. After [Chris] Stapleton and Miranda [Lambert] performed “Maggie’s Song,” Jesse Tack I never stopped crying. I loved that it benefitted MuttNation. But did Luke Combs really win zero awards? Wow. Thank you to the Academy for showcasing Country radio, and specifically the Personality of the Year winners. It was thrilling to be included right next to Kix Freakin’ Brooks. But, I missed the Station of the Year winners being recognized. Hubbard WUBE/Cincinnati afternoon personality Jesse Tack: The sheer number of performances (continued on page 14)

You can feel things are turning. Things are getting better and back to normal. And, I think, tonight is a reflection of that. You can, definitely, feel it.

It means the world to me. The doors are open for everybody and country music’s embracing everybody: females, men, black men, anybody.

You can’t get caught up in one year. You can’t get caught up in two years. You have to do it because you love it. One day, when you’re 7580 years old, you can look back at your body of work and, hopefully, go, “God, I loved every minute of that.” —Luke Bryan

WI TH Country Aircheck goes Off The Record with Warner/WEA’s Ian Munsick: I take pride in responding to as many messages from fans as I possibly can. They are the fuel to the fire, and that’s the least I can do. If taking a minute out of my day can make their day, I’m gonna do it every time. Radio tour has honestly been a blast! I’ve gotten to meet so many different music lovers the past few weeks from all across the nation. Obviously, I would love to shake hands and visit face-to-face, but being able to meet with five-plus stations a day is inspiring. A little exhausting, but every one of them is different – it keeps me on my toes. I love it. I grew up listening to [KYTI] 93.7 the Coyote in Sheridan, WY. We had four stations in my hometown, and two were Country. I haven’t caught myself on the waves yet, but I’ve had people on social media tag me in videos of them hearing “Long Haul” for the first

time. Unreal. Especially when it’s in places like Orlando and Nashville that are so far away from Wyoming ... I can’t wait to bump it for the first time when that moment comes! My new album, Coyote Cry, is western ballads and bangers. We live on a lake near Nashville, and when the floods hit, our turtle log drifted away. The most redneck thing I’ve done lately is grabbing one of my western ropes, kayaking out into the middle of the lake and roping it back to safety. I like my turtles. If I could have written one song, it’d be “Yesterday” by The Beatles. Timeless. It will never not be relevant, not only in America, but around the world. Probably the most “human” song to ever be written. My wife made me watch Bridgerton. I sat through the whole series. That’s true love, right there.
Life has been amazing, crazy … all the things. I’m normally in bed right now. This is way past my bedtime. [It’s] well worth it. —Gabby Barrett

We’ve only got to sing this song a handful of times together. To be able to do it on that stage, in this place, was extra special. Especially right after winning that award — there was a lot of adrenaline and joy going through our bodies.
—Lee Brice on performing “I Hope You’re Happy Now.”
We used to sneak into these awards shows or try to get pit passes, because at the core of all of this, we are just fans of country music. To be invited to the party, to hear our name called in the list of nominees is an honor.

Chart Chat
Congratulations to Gabby Barrett, Kristen Williams, Tom Martens, Michael Chase and the Warner/WAR promotion team on landing this week’s No. 1. “The Good Ones” hits the top almost exactly one year to the day since Barrett’s first single “I Hope” (CAW 4/20/21) did the same. Barrett Gabby Barrett becomes the first female artist to see her first two singles climb to the summit since Kelsea Ballerini’s second single “Dibs” become her second No. 1 in February 2016. Songwriters are Zach Kale, Emily Landis, Jim McCormick and Barrett. This is the 51st week on the chart for Tennile Arts’ “Somebody Like You,” making it the longest chart run ever for a female act – eclipsing the 50-week record Maddie & Tae’s “Die From A Broken Heart” set last year. The 51-week total puts “Somebody” in a tie for 10th in chart longevity overall. And kudos to Chris Palmer, Ashley Sidoti and the Valory crew on scoring 117 first-week adds for Thomas Rhett’s “Country Again,” which leads this week’s add board. It is his third largest add day ever, and the song splashes on to the chart at No. 35.

blew my mind, and the producers clearly put an emphasis on showcasing the music. Luke Combs with the string section on “Forever After All” added a nice touch to an already great song. Luke Bryan winning Entertainer of the Year was a little surprising; I was happy for him, but I thought Combs had it in the bag. I’m sure it was an accident, but I cringed when I saw the graphic for “I Hope” go on the screen for Single of the Year after Carly Pearce and Lee Brice were announced as winners. And I was bummed out for Dan + Shay that their performance audio wasn’t synced correctly. Cox KCYY/San Antonio PD/afternoon personality Christi Brooks: I know there was an issue with the Dan + Shay
Page 14
performance, but I cut the cord forever ago and thought maybe it was just my stream; I didn’t think anything of it. Ashley McBryde is a badass, and Brothers Osborne did not disappoint. I was moved by Carrie Underwood and CeCe Winans – standing in my living room in tears like I was in the middle of praise and worship at church. They deserve an award for Christi Brooks that performance. And, one of my friends on Facebook said, “Did anyone else feel like they are a little bit pregnant after the Ryan [Hurd] and Maren [Morris] performance?” I’ve never seen them perform together, and it was fire. iHeartMedia KTGX/Tulsa PD/midday host Karla Cantrell: When Ryan Hurd put his hand out to Maren Morris, I said out loud, “If you don’t touch him, I’ll beat you.” They are adorable together and so Karla Cantrell talented! Eric Church never disappoints, and there is no one else who could’ve followed Carrie Underwood’s performance. Brothers Osborne winding up the show made me want to scream and shout and dance my ass off with a thousand other fans! Old Dominion’s acceptance speech stood out; can you say “bad asses” on CBS? Asking for a friend. I didn’t think that honoring those we’ve lost was as touching or emotional as it has been in the past. I really expected this to play during Carrie Underwood’s gospel performance, so the fact that it was crammed at the end of Kenny Chesney’s new song was disappointing. Buck Owens KUZZ/Bakersfield MD/afternoon host Kenn McCloud: The energy was much more upbeat than last fall’s version. Being on the West Coast, I used the hashtag

#LastToKnow, but it was worth the wait. Brad Paisley surprising Jimmie Allen was priceless, but my “oh, wow” moment was hands-down Carrie Underwood with CeCe Winans. That performance made up for the fact that I missed church to watch my son play baseball. The show did a fantastic job promoting Nashville being open again, but I hope it goes Kenn McCloud back to Vegas next year. I’ve always loved the “Country Music’s Biggest Party” theme, and it sets this show apart from the others. It was great to see the Academy spotlighting radio winners, but they didn’t show the Stations of the Year. Bristol WXBQ/Johnson City, TN PD/morning co-host Nikki Thomas: I loved the Dierks Bentley cover of U2’s “Pride (In The Name Of Love)” with The War And Treaty and Larkin Poe. We were not expecting anything related to our win [for Small Market Personality of the Year] to be aired, so it was a shock to see the video. Garth Brooks recognized that our morning co-host Steve Stroud was wearing a Garth hat in our video, so he gave Steve a surprise call on our Nikki Thomas hotline this morning. Steve loves Garth and almost stroked out on us. Oh, and if I had legs like Carly Pearce, I’d have worn a shirt for a dress, too! Beasley WXTU/Philadelphia afternoon host Nicole Michalik: I definitely Googled fringe jackets after the opening performance [by Miranda Lambert and Elle King]. I need all the fringe! Chris Young and Kane Brown are two of my favorites, and I was excited to see them together. I also loved the Little Big Town performance – so much fun and such amazing visuals! I did enjoy Carly Pearce’s reaction to her win, and I’ve loved seeing Nicole Michalik her triumph after heartbreak. And I loved the artists who gave mention to Country radio. I still think radio is powerful, and having the artists love and respect it so much gives me hope. Cumulus KSCS/Dallas APD/MD/afternoon personality Al Farb: Unless I missed others, Dan + Shay and Luke Bryan were the only artists to thank Country radio, which seems to be a dying trend. I did love that Maren Morris and Luke Bryan thanked their label promotion teams, and it was cool hearing some familiar
Page 16
names. I loved the Kelsea Ballerini and Kenny Chesney performance and am excited for the world to hear this future smash. I appreciated Phillip Sweet’s message before the Little Big Town performance, but the cutout of him they showed at the end was kind of creepy. And Clay Walker forgetting to use the mic ... that was in his hand ... c’mon, Clay! Ha! Al Farb I did appreciate the tasteful way the Radio Award winners were honored, and I hope this is something that continues post-pandemic. It’s something the CMA Awards should take note of after completely removing radio winners from their show. I enjoyed the way newer or guest artists were paired with a superstar, but a majority of the performances were of brand new and arguably unfamiliar songs. Just like radio, television lives and dies by ratings. If all we played was the newest, unfamiliar songs and nothing else on the radio, we’d all be out of jobs. We have to start looking at these shows as a way to showcase the best of country music to America in prime time. Hits keep people watching. Momentum KJUG/Visalia, CA APD/ midday host Rose Ortega: It was fun to watch, and the flow of the show was good, but it felt too polished; it didn’t have enough Rose Ortega spontaneity. I miss the jam sessions and tributes to the greats from the past. Maren [Morris’] acceptance speech was very emotional, and it was nice to see women showing each other love and respect. What was weird to hear was “Keith Frickin’ Urban.” I cringed, because I thought [Mickey Guyton] was going to use another word! The inclusivity they were looking to achieve in showing that country music is welcoming was apparent, and it was nice to see everyone come together. Cumulus KIIM/Tucson PD/afternoon host Buzz Jackson: I really loved Alan Jackson. His songs always make an emotional connection, and that’s something the format is often missing. I was surprised and disappointed that neither Miranda Lambert Buzz Jackson nor Luke Combs won anything, and I missed Shawn Parr’s enthusiastic voiceover work. In general, I thought it was really good. –Monta Vaden CAC
