attersea Power Station is a London landmark with some serious history. First making its stamp on the London skyline in the 1930s, it remained the powerhouse of the city for decades. Monikered the ‘Cathedral of Power’, this industrial basilica supplied electricity to all the major postcodes and British institutions, not least, Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament. A disused brownfield site since it shut down in the 1980s, it’s recently undergone a restoration of epic proportions – making it the ideal backdrop for C&TH’s ‘Regeneration’ issue cover shoot. Alongside shooting breakout star Emma Appleton in the most sumptuous of gowns from British brands like Alexander McQueen and Christopher Kane, and diamonds from Boodles and Dior, photographer David Reiss also took a trip to the power station to capture its unique Art Deco architectural details. The result is a powerful juxtaposition – between old and new, and between historical power house and young up-andcoming talent. From a derelict site to the new home of a thriving community, Battersea has seen arguably the biggest comeback in London’s history. batterseapowerstation.co.uk n 74 | COUNTRYANDTOWNHOUSE.COM | July/August 2022
