Class of 2023….and here we are!!

The three of you are making history as the smallest class ever to graduate from Pacific High School. We are proud that you all have made it through lots of trials and tribulations of high school to come out as graduates. There have been lots of tears, late nights, detentions, after school tutoring sessions, laughter and gray hairs (mostly mine) to get to this point, and we, as a staff, are so proud to have taken a part of your school experience and proud of the fine young men you have become. Remember life can be hard, but rewards always go to those who keep plugging along, working through the hard stuff and not making excuses. Life is what you make of it, not what others think you should do. Find your passion and move on it. As the great Dr. Seuss once said, “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” YOU BE YOU.

Tyler Hackett lives with his parents, Sherri Ruth and Douglas Hackett.. He has participated with Basketball and Track & Field while at Pacific. He has also worked part-time on the Ashdown Fishing Fleet and at The Dive Restaurant.

Josiah Selvy lives with his Mom, Amanda Selvy. During High School, he has been an active participant in the Pirate Basketball Team. He has also worked part-time at Redfish and Mr. Ed’s Underground Pub. Josiah will be enrolling at the Pacific Northwest Carpenters Institute where he will obtain Carpenter Certification.

We are proud to announce the graduation of the Brookings-Harbor High School Class of 2023! They are a fun loving, personable class who love their peers and care about community. We have had the honor of watching them grow from freshmen into the young adults who will be making their way in the world as graduates.

BHHS celebrates their accomplishments in a formal ceremony at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 10, at Elmer Bankus Field, 522 Fern Ave, Brookings. Kevin Bane will be giving this year’s keynote address.

I am pleased to recognize this year’s three Valedictorians: Allison Dodds, Acacia Pringle, and Alyssum Spitael; and Salutatorian Daisha Nidiffer.

Additionally, many of our students will graduate with more than a high school diploma, having already earned valuable certifications or dual credits toward college degrees.

With optimism and pride, we wish all of our graduates the best as they embark on new journeys to college and career. They have been accepted to trade and technical schools,

colleges, and universities. Some have plans to join a military or civil service branch, while others will take religious missions. These are the future business and entrepreneurship leaders of our community. Many already have years of on-the-job work, internships, and volunteer experience as they graduate high school.

We are grateful to our families, teachers and staff, and community for supporting the Class of 2023.

Advanced degrees are growing in popularity

Many college grads are continuing their educations after earning bachelor’s degrees. Roughly 13.1 percent of American adults have an advanced degree, which is up from 8.6 percent in 2000, according to findings from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Eductional Attainment in the United States: 2018. As of 2016, 28.5 percent of Canadians had a bachelor’ s degree or higher, says Statistics Canada.

The National Student Clearinghouse Research Center says enrollment in graduate programs continues to grow. It rose 3.6 percent in fall 2020 from a year earlier, and 4.4 percent during the spring 2021 semester, perhaps spurred on by the global pandemic and schools’ more flexible course offerings that cater to remote students. Despite their growing popularity, advanced degrees do not always translate into higher salaries or improved job prospects. The research site Educationdata.org says about 9 percent of Americans have master’s degrees, but the degrees increased employability by less than 3 percent.

Furthermore, the cost of a master’s degree nearly doubles the average debt held by people with bachelor’s degrees, according to the personal finance marketplace Credible. In addition, certain business owners may even pass up on applicants with advanced degrees because the students had been in school too long or tended to assume their degrees make them worth more, according to a report by Fox Business. That report indicates less than 10 percent of employers believe colleges do a good job of preparing students for the working world, and many employers value applicants who prioritize real-world experience over schooling. This is information students need to consider when thinking about pursuing advanced degrees.
