Small Hospital-Big Mission

Improving the health of our community every day.

Bay Area Hospital is a 172-bed acute care hospital in Coos Bay, Oregon. Created and owned by local citizens, Bay Area Hospital has been the hub of Oregon’s South Coast healthcare for five decades. Despite hard economic times, it has endured and grown, continually adding new technology and broadening its services.

We are certified as a Level III trauma center by the state. As a Level III trauma center, Bay Area Hospital provides comprehensive inpatient services to those patients who can be maintained in a stable or improving condition without specialized care. An in-house multidisciplinary trauma resuscitation team is immediately available upon the arrival of the patient to the emergency department. A board-certified general surgeon trained in ATLS is on-call and available to the patient.

As the Medical Center for Oregon’s South Coast, Bay Area Hospital offers a comprehensive range of diagnostic and therapeutic services. Physicians, nurses, and technologists are on duty 24-hours a day to meet the medical and emergency needs of South Coast residents and visitors. Our highly skilled staff is involved in a constant process of professional educational opportunities to keep abreast of the latest medical innovations. The hospital remains strong through sound fiscal management, dedicated board members, professional employees, a highly qualified medical staff, caring volunteers, and the community’s continuing support.

The hospital takes pride that no public taxes or bonds are required to support its annual $231 million operating budget. Bay Area Hospital is driven by a mission to provide high-quality healthcare that extends beyond the hospital walls. We are dedicated to promoting and improving the health of our local communities and residents by providing a range of vital services to meet the unique needs of the communities we serve. Most of what influences our health happens outside of the doctor’s office—in our schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods.

Bay Area Hospital shares a common goal of improving the health of our community and lowering the cost of care. Bay Area Hospital is deeply connected to the local community. Our doctors and nurses are your neighbors, and our team reaches many families throughout Coos, Curry, and Douglas counties.

We believe giving back to the community is the right thing to do— through personalized care, education, and charitable contributions.

Specialties of the clinic include Internal Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, Weight Loss, General Wellness, and Aesthetics. e services are provided by four medical professionals: Dr. Jay Patel, MD; Dr. Palak Patel, MD; eresa Davis PA-C; and Cassandra Holli eld MPAS, PA-C.

In addition to providing medical care and routine testing like EKG and PFT, Chetco Medical & Aesthetics also o ers extensive diagnostic testing including ANSAR (Autonomous Nervous System Testing), screening for vestibular dysfunction with videonystagmogram, cognition screening and CANS-MCI, screening for peripheral vascular disease, and screening for peripheral autonomic neuropathy.

Chetco Medical & Aesthetics expanded its aesthetics services with Bellezza, a new state-of-the-art medical spa that opened its doors in November 2020. Bellezza is the only physician-owned and operated medical spa on the southern Oregon coast, and o ers a broad selection of aesthetics services including Botox, llers, CoolSculpting/CoolTone, liposuction, non-surgical faceli s, and skin rejuvenation services such as laser resurfacing, sun and age spot removal, microneedling, and medical grade facials. Other services include skin tightening, hair restoration treatments, intimate health, laser hair removal and many more. Most recently, Bellezza introduced a comprehensive Wellness Program that includes options for physician-supervised weight

loss as well as enhanced Bioidentical Hormone erapy. In these programs, physicians work directly with each patient to provide customized nutrition, tness, and behavior guidance as well as medication to help patients reach their weight loss and wellness goals.

Chetco Medical & Aesthetics began with the medical practice of Dr. Jay Patel. He has been board certi ed in Internal Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, and Obesity Medicine and has been a practicing physician in the Brookings community since 1987. His practice includes treatment of a broad spectrum of medical diseases such as managing both common and complex illnesses of adolescents, adults and the elderly.

His son, Dr. Palak Patel, joined the practice in 2016. Dr. Palak is board certi ed in Internal Medicine and Geriatrics. He grew up in Brookings, along with his twin brother and his sister. He attended the University of California San Diego for his undergraduate studies. He completed his medical education at Oregon Health and Sciences University (OHSU) in Portland. He then went on to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire to complete his internal medicine training prior to graduating from his geriatric medicine fellowship program at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pennsylvania, one of the top geriatric programs in the country.

In 2016, the fat-freezing CoolSculpting device was added to their practice, and the doctors were pleasantly surprised by the feedback from their patients. ey noticed there was a gap in

options for medical-grade aesthetics services in the area, so Dr. Palak became trained and certi ed in aesthetics procedures including Botox, llers, and laser treatments and started o ering them in the clinic. Over the following years, the doctors saw increased interest in these types of services, so they decided to build Bellezza to expand the range of services available to match the community’s interest. During this time, Dr. Palak also received extensive training and advanced certi cations in other treatments including liposuction and radiofrequency, which are now o ered at Bellezza.

e team at Bellezza strives to meet the goals of their patients to help them look as young and as youthful as they feel. ey are committed to providing safe and e ective treatments utilizing state-of-the-art technologies, combination therapies, and specially-curated medical-grade skin care lines in a pristine spa environment. ey provide physician-developed comprehensive treatment plans that are customized for each individual. e treatments are overseen by a physician, and are administered by trained professionals including a physician, Registered Nurses that are also certi ed advanced injectors, and an Aesthetician.

Though a transient lifestyle is something few people aspire to during much of their lives, come retirement, the idea of staying in a place for only a short time has more appeal.

According to a study from the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies, 36 percent of baby boomers want to spend their retirements traveling. Many are succeeding in doing just that, as a study from the luxury travel network Virtuoso found that today’s seniors spent an average of just over $11,000 per year on travel. That was more than any other generation, highlighting just how much older adults like to get out and explore the world.

Retirees who fear they cannot afford to travel can explore the various ways for seniors to cut costs and still satisfy their wanderlust during retirement.

1. Take advantage of age-related discounts.

Some adults prefer to hide their ages, but when it comes time to travel during retirement, honesty is the best policy. Many businesses that cater to travelers offer discounts to seniors. Car rental agencies, hotels, travel agencies, and cruise lines may offer direct discounts to customers 65 and older, while membership in organizations such as AAA and AARP may make seniors eligible for additional discounts. Discounts on lodging and airfare might net the biggest savings, but even discounts on various smaller expenses can add up to big savings.

2. Don’t overlook travel agencies.

While many prospective travelers’ first instincts are now to visit various travel websites in an effort to find the most affordable trips, it’s important that travelers not overlook travel agencies when planning trips. Travel websites, though a valuable resource, only list the hotels and airlines that agree to be included on their sites. While many participate, some do not, and those that do not may instead work independent of travel websites or partner with travel agencies. Travel agencies have access to the latest information, and many specialize in certain countries, knowing all the attractions visitors to their countries want to see. Travel agencies may offer packages that include admissions to popular attractions, which can be more affordable than planning a trip a la carte.

3. Travel as part of a group.

Group travel may not appeal to everyone, but it should appeal to older, budget-conscious travelers. Retirees who are uncomfortable driving at home will likely be even less comfortable driving in foreign countries where the rules of the road are not the same. Traveling in groups, whether it’s with a retirement community, religious organization or another program, can save travelers substantial amounts of money. Many hotels and tourist attractions offer steep discounts for group tours, which can even be arranged through travel agencies. A hidden benefit of signing up for a group tour is the chance to meet new people and develop new relationships with fellow globetrotters. Many working professionals hope to spend the bulk of their retirement traveling the globe. While such a goal is potentially costly, there are various ways to save and still see the world.

Southern Coos Hospital & Health Center Celebrates 25th Anniversary

“Quality Healthcare with a Personal Touch” is the goal at Southern Coos Hospital & Health Center, a 21-bed Critical Access Hospital located at 900 11th St. SE, in Bandon, Oregon.

Some History

The history of Bandon’s hospitals is rich. Dr. Roland Leep founded the first Emergency Hospital in 1912, located on Alabama Street across from the Masonic Temple in Old Town. R.L. Leep Memorial Hospital (1937-1955) was named in his honor and located on First Street in Old Town.

The Southern Coos Health District was formed in 1955 and a new hospital opened in 1960 on the bluff overlooking the Coquille River and Lighthouse. The Health District receives tax support and legal status under Oregon statutes. It serves a population of 10,000 residents in Southern Coos and Northern Curry counties.

By the late 1990s, the hospital on the bluff was in dire need of upgrades and expansion. On land donated by Bill Magness, along with loans, Southern Coos Hospital, as we know it today, was constructed in 1998-99 and dedicated in its current location on Sept. 9, 1999 (9-9-99). 25th Anniversary Celebration

In commemoration of the hospital’s Silver Anniversary and the services provided to the city of Bandon, surrounding communities and the thousands of visitors and tourists that visit the area each year, SCHHC is planning a 25th anniversary celebration and cordially invites the public to participate.

“We are turning 25 years old this year and are

proud of the important role that we play in this community, as one of the largest employers and the major provider of medical services, including emergency medical services, in Bandon,” said CEO Raymond T. Hino

Community events have been taking place, including a monthly lecture series held every second Tuesday at noon Bandon Fisheries Warehouse through December.

A special 25th Anniversary Celebration from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, at the hospital, 900 11th St. SE. Everyone is welcome. There will be speakers, music, an art show, facility tours, and refreshments. The public is invited to join in these special events to celebrate the hospital’s 25th anniversary!

Expanded Services

Since the new hospital opened in 1999, the campus has continued to grow to meet the needs of the communities it serves. The Southern Coos Multi-Specialty Clinic and the Southern Coos Health Foundation and business office opened in 2015.

The hospital and clinic are also one of the largest employers in the area, with more than 200 people on staff.

As a Critical Access Hospital, SCHHC provides 24-hour emergency services 7 days a week, as well as an extensive suite of ancillary services such as radiology, laboratory, and respiratory therapy, all featuring highly trained clinicians and state-of-the-art equipment.

The Multi-Specialty Clinic offers primary care

and osteopathic medicine as well as mental health, pain management, and outpatient infusion services.

Surgical options include hand surgeries such as carpal tunnel, plastic surgery, and more. SCHHC also supplies short-term, skilled nursing care with its Swing Bed Program.

Looking to the Future

Under the skilled leadership of the Southern Coos Health District Board, CEO Raymond Hino, the Executive Team, and dedicated managers, SCHHC will continue to expand.

Additional surgery options will be coming soon with the completion this fall of significant upgrades to the hospital’s Surgical Unit.

This year, SCHHC will implement its new accounting system, Sage Intacct, and its new Electronic Health Records platform, Providence Epic.

A new Chief Medical Officer will start this fall, with additional leadership and vision for the medical staff.

“Our goal is for SCHHC to be the hospital of choice for all the residents in our service area, as well as the employer of choice,” Hino said. “Owned by the community for the health of the community, SCHHC is on a mission to provide you with the quality care you deserve. We have a devoted and skilled staff eager to serve. Our patients, families, and visitors are our top priority.”
