Finding the right doctor for your need
The medical field is comprised of many professionals working in concert to keep patients healthy, which involves treating any conditions that arise.
BEST OF HEALTH AND WELLNESS 2024
Individuals may be treated by various types of doctors in their lifetime, and each is an expert in his or her field. According to Medical News Today, most physicians are categorized as primary care or specialty care.
Navigating the health care system can be confusing. Recognition of the specialties of various types of doctors can make it easier to make it through that system.
• General practitioner: Also known as a family physician, or primary care doctor, these are the doctors patients are likely to encounter most often. They care for patients during routine checkups and screening tests; provide immunizations; and manage ongoing medical conditions. GPs also may be internists, treating both common and complex illnesses.
• Pediatrician: Pediatricians specialize in the care of children from birth and up. Although there is no set age when patients will transition from a pediatrician to an adult doctor, Kids Health says the switch is typically made between the ages of 18 and 21.
• Geriatric medicine specialists: These doctors focus on treating elderly patients and the medical conditions that can develop as a person ages. Geriatric doctors work in private offices, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, hospitals, and some even make house calls.
• Endocrinologists: An endocrinologist is an expert in the study of the body’s hormones, says the Cleveland Clinic. They diagnose and treat many different conditions that affect the endocrine system, including diabetes, reproductive issues and thyroid conditions.
• Dermatologist: Skin, hair and nail conditions are handled by a dermatologist. Dermatologists routinely treat conditions like acne, moles, scarring, rashes, and more.
• Nephrologists: Individuals with kidney diseases as well as high

Health benefits of hobbies
Maintaining physical and mental health often requires a multi-faceted approach. Eating well, exercising and reducing stress are part of a healthy regimen, but those are not the only components of a healthy lifestyle.
Hobbies can have a positive effect on overall health. Hobbies can seem like ways to simply pass the time or alleviate boredom. But a deeper exploration could shed light on just how healthy hobbies can be. In fact, it is essential to carve out time for hobbies because they can be so beneficial.
According to a study published in Aging Clinical and Experimental Research, participation in leisure activities positively influences self-perceived well-being and depressive symptoms. “The blue zone” refers to the areas of the world that have the longest-living people on the planet, which include Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; and Ikaria, Greece, among others. Participation in activities that bring out a creative side leads to an increased sense of well-being that is good for long-term health. They also can reduce cortisol

levels. Cortisol is known as the stress hormone, and it can negatively affect energy, mood and sleep.
While most leisure activities regularly engaged in can have positive effects on health, those that focus on a combination of physical and mental stimulation are most beneficial. Women looking to change their daily routines may want to focus on these health-boosting hobbies.
• Dancing: Laugh, sweat and learn some footwork in a dance class. It can make exercise fun for those who find traditional exercise does not keep their attention.
• Kayaking: There’s something serene about being on the water away from the hustle of life on land. Kayaking strengthens the body, but the calm of taking in the water and scenery nourishes the mind. Experts agree that outdoor hobbies add another benefit since sunlight helps the body release neuroreceptors that trigger more positive thoughts.
• Gardening: Gardening is physical, requires planning, involves spending
time outdoors, and yields tangible results through thriving plants. These are all factors that promote good health.
• Fostering animals: Fostering animals offers them an opportunity to spend time in domestic settings before being adopted by permanent owners. For the foster person, having a dog involves going out on walks and play sessions in the backyard. A sense of purpose comes from helping out needy animals, and this hobby also taps into physical wellness.
• Volunteering: Being a presence in your community can foster social engagement and boost emotional health. It also can keep you physically active. Various hobbies can be good for the mind and body, which makes it worth anyone’s effort to make more time for recreation and leisure. Patient-Centered

Strategies to protect long-term mental health
Mental health has always been important, but the need for people to prioritize their emotional, psychological and social well-being gained greater attention during the COVID-19 pandemic. Social distancing restrictions designed to reduce cases of COVID-19 contributed to feelings of isolation, depression and anxiety in millions of individuals across the globe, sparking a heightened sense of curiosity about what people can do to safeguard their mental health in the short-term but also over the course of their lives.
Pandemic-related restrictions have long since been lifted, but the need to prioritize mental health remains. The National Institute of Mental Health notes that selfcare can play a vital role in maintaining mental health. With that in mind, individuals can consider these strategies as they look to safeguard their mental health over the long haul.
• Exercise regularly. Exercise benefits the body in myriad ways, and those benefits extend to mental health. A 30-minute daily walk can boost mood. In addition, regular physical activity positively affects self-esteem and can even lead to
a reduction in stress and anxiety. Chronic anxiety can adversely affect the body’s nervous, cardiovascular, digestive, immune, and respiratory systems.
• Maintain social connections. The benefits of maintaining social connections, including relying on friends and family for emotional support and practical help. People who are socially connected and maintain stable and supportive relationships are more likely to have better mental health outcomes than those who don’t.
• Eat a nutritious, balanced diet. The Diet can be an important ally for people looking to improve and preserve their mental health. Numerous studies have examined the relationship between diet and mental health, and a growing body
of research suggests a strong connection between a healthy diet and mental health. Increased consumption of fruits and vegetables positively affects psychological health. That same review also indicated daily vegetable consumption provides a therapeutic effect that can help to reduce symptoms among people with clinical depression.
• Resolve to read more. Much like exercise, reading has been linked to a host of positive health outcomes, including mental health benefits. A study from found that reading can reduce stress by as much as 68 percent. Escapism is another potentially potent benefit of reading, as a recent report in Psychology Today noted that researchers believe narrative absorption, which refers to the experience of being immersed or engaged while reading a story, provides an escape or opportunity for mental reflection.
Self-care can go a long way toward promoting long-term mental health. Various strategies and activities fall under the umbrella of self-care, and each can have a profound and lasting effect on mental health.

Make fitness more fun and engaging
Resolutions to get in shape are popular. Despite the best and most detailed intentions, many resolutions fall by the wayside shortly after. Many people stop heading to the gym or working out at home because their exercise routines become stale. By making fitness more engaging and fun, individuals may be more likely to stick with a new regimen.
Exercise with a friend
It can be tough to get motivated to exercise. However, when you have a buddy invested in the same activities, you can inspire one another to stick with the routine. A little healthy competition also can keep both of you focused.
Head outdoors
Exercising outdoors means there will always be something new to experience. Rather than seeing the same four walls of a gym or a home fitness area, venture outside and embrace fresh air and sunshine, allowing the great outdoors to provide all the motivation you need.
Try something new
Change your routine every so often. This will force your brain and body to adapt and work a little harder and provide new inspiration for doing the workout. While you don’t have to engage in a trendy workout if you don’t want to, settle
for trying one new class or machine a week to figure out what you may enjoy.
Vary your schedule
Think about scheduling different types of activities for particular days of the week. For example, Monday may be for walking, Tuesday for swimming and Friday for some a recreational sports activity. This can make exercise more engaging.
Use an exercise playlist
Download several upbeat songs that can you get you energized for exercise. There even are specially curated playlists that match the songs’ beats
per minute with exercise cadence, to help you run or workout at a desired pace.
Find ways to exercise when engaging in daily activities
Exercise can come in all shapes and forms. Even when you’re pushing a vacuum cleaner or weeding the garden, you’re engaging in physical activity. If these types of things are more enjoyable for you than traditional exercises, do more of them.
Exercising can be fun and more immersive when people explore and experiment the many ways to get fit.
Healthy exercise guidelines for adults
A physically active lifestyle has been linked to a host of health benefits, including a reduced risk for various chronic diseases and a longer, healthier life. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services notes that moving more and sitting less benefits people regardless of their age, sex, race, ethnicity, or even current fitness levels.
Whether they’re adapting to a more physically active lifestyle, already physically active or somewhere in between, individuals can benefit from recognizing the latest physical activity guidelines from the DHHS.
Adults
The DHHS notes that substantial health benefits can be gained when
adults do between 150 and 300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week or between 75 and 150 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity each week. The DHHS notes that aerobic activity, which can include walking, running, cycling, and hiking, among other activities, should be spread out over the course of the week. In addition to aerobic activity, the DHHS urges adults to do muscle-strengthening activities of moderate or greater intensity on two or more days per week.
Older adults
The DHHS recommends older adults adhere to the same guidelines as younger adults but take some additional steps as well. Older adults are urged to incorporate multicomponent physical
activity that includes balance training into their fitness regimens. The DHHS also advises older adults to determine their level of effort for physical activity relative to their fitness level. It’s also recommended that older adults with chronic conditions discuss their ability to engage safely in regular physical activity with their physicians. Vigorous- and even moderate-intensity exercise may not be possible for some older adults with existing conditions.
Routine physical activity can help adults and older adults live longer, healthier lives. Adults of all ages are urged to speak with their physicians about safe ways to become more physically active.
