Curry County Cruisers Appreciation Day
BY NATE SCHWARTZ Curry Coastal Pilot
The Curry County Cruisers Car Club has been building community and putting on car shows on the South Coast for the better part of four decades. Established in 1987, the Cruisers have been holding monthly meetings, organizing huge exhibitions, and spreading the gas-powered gospel to all who will listen, while contributing to great local causes in the process.
“The Cruisers got started with a group of enthusiasts about classic cars in the BrookingsHarbor area. In fact, one of the first presidents of the organization is Little Joe down at Harbor Logging. He tells me about the OG’s. He described to me characters, fun characters who loved cars and would get

The Curry County Chamber of Commerce and Gold Beach Main Street are still taking participants for the county’s Halloween Candy Map. This initiative gives businesses and organizations an opportunity to get people involved, while granting local families a safe plan of action for trick or treating.
A whole host of small businesses in Gold Beach, Brookings, and Port Orford have already put themselves on the map, with many parts of city government and services chipping in for the fun as well. Each city has its own section with highlighted business and Halloween events. Local Brookings favorites like Legends Arcade, Pithitude, and Whimsical Griffin have already signed up to participate, opening their doors for the evening of the 31st.
The City of Brookings, Port of Brookings-Harbor, and the Chetco Community Library are all on the list of destinations for costumed candy hunters. As are the Brookings Police and Fire Departments, who will be hoping that the map helps reduce Halloween mischief. Also on the map is the Chetco Players’
annual haunt. This year’s paranormal theme brings out of this world scares to those brave enough to enter. Gold Beach is home to the perfect event for those feeling a little less courageous, or with younger children. The Gold Beach Visitor Center is holding their ‘Not So Scary Haunted House’. Silly scares, s’mores and snacks, and crafts for kids replace the screams, revving chainsaws, and dark passages you’d find in a normal haunt. Gold Beach thrill seekers need not be worried though, the big kid Haunted House will still be taking place at the Event Center on the Beach at the Curry County Scaregrounds. Gold Beach Main Street is also holding their 2024 Halloween Decorating Contest. Judging will take place on the 27th, with winners announced on the 31st. Businesses and residential entries will be judged separately. To nominate spirited households and businesses or for more information, visit the Gold Beach Main Street Facebook page. Take advantage of all of the spooky season festivities by visiting the Candy Maps via the link below. The Curry Coastal Pilot wishes everyone a safe and spooky Halloween! https://www.facebook. com/currycountychamber/ posts/1332824274724033/?_rdr
LAS VEGAS, NEV. - Racers representing facilities across Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, California, and Hawai’i traveled to compete at the National Hot Rod Association’s Pacific Division Finals, held October 10-13, 2024, at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Two racers from Samoa Drag Strip in Humboldt County, CA made the journey to Las Vegas to compete after meeting the event’s qualification criteria based on their season performances at Samoa Drag Strip. One racer was Brookings native Codi Kirksey.
Craig Merrilees (Windsor, Calif.) entered the Pacific Division Finals as the two-time, defending NHRA Pacific Division Champion in Street Electric Vehicle, and was National Champion of the category in 2022. Merrilees also held invitations to the race in Super Pro E.T. Eliminator, winning four races and the season championship at Samoa Drag Strip, and as well as in Pro E.T. Eliminator where he won another four races, placing second in the season championship at Samoa. At the Division Finals,

Court Boice has exceeded our expectations, as our Representative in Salem. He is consistently fully engaged in the challenging task of championing our South Coast priorities, undistracted by passing political trends. Court has always been clear-eyed in his approach to legislative craftsmanship. His ideals are unwavering, yet he understands and works deftly with the processes of negotiation, in doing all he can, as one of our minority champions, to keep the ship that is Oregon from crashing onto the social and economic rocks of leftist ruination. Beyond Salem, Court has been super about showing up for so many of our local and regional events, to stay connected with those who elected him. Also, his opponents have little defense against his earnest and engaging friendliness.
Stan and Theresa Avery Bandon, Oregon
I have known Court Boice for many years. In my 35 years of Guiding - I witnessed his same years as Owner/Operator of Paradise Lodge and as a Rogue River Whitewater Jet Boat Pilot. Those commitments involved the safety, and wellbeing of thousands of outdoor recreationalist from all over the world in challenging one of the greatest whitewater rivers on earth. These eager guests and passengers not only learned from him but Court also learned many life guiding lessons.
As a good friend and mentor, I have been near his side all of his political life, some good times and some a little shaky. What I have seen since Court Boice became State Representative is amazing growth. I would have never assumed that he would rise to meet the new challenges of a higher office to the level he has, however I underestimated his ability for continuing maturity. He has made a major step from County Commissioner to State Representative in Salem fluidly and it looks good on him and is good for us to have him as our State Representative. Court Boice is hardworking and is someone we can always count on. And he has been amazing in his support of fisheries issues and fire suppression needs. He has my Vote to continue in this important role. Please give him your consideration. Thank You.

My name is Dick Heard and I would like to lend my support for Court Boice. Court is a lifelong resident of House District 1 and I don’t know of anyone who loves the area that he lives in and brags about it and the people who live there more than Court does. I’ve never seen Court come down on the wrong side of an issue and I believe we are well served by him in the legislature. There’s no one who works harder to serve his district. I give a full and unreserved endorsement of Court Boice. Sincerely, Dick Heard
I support Boice for State Rep. I support the re-election of Court Boice for Oregon State Representative for Coos, Curry and Douglas Counties. He always listens to the people’s concerns and is a representative that will call you back. He will continue to work on reversing the bad Legislative policies that have destroyed our communities. He will continue to fight for our freedoms. I have seen his support for the Veterans and law enforcement. Please join me in re-electing Court Boice to help our communities.

District 1 voters will soon choose their representation in the State Legislature. It is a choice between dragging Oregon into the past or leading us to a productive and positive future.
Representative Boice and Senator Brock Smith support ending Vote by Mail, dragging Oregon back 26 years to voting in person on Election Day. Bret Cecil, Democratic candidate for State Representative, and Lupe Preciado-McAlister, Democratic candidate for State Senator, support our election system. They know voter fraud is negligible, that our state election officials are vigilant and constantly working to improve security. They know Oregon’s system is so popular among both Republicans and Democrats, it has resulted in the highest voter turnout in the nation. Cecil and Preciado-McAlister will lead our state into a future that supports and respects the voting rights of all Oregonians.
Smith and Boice support a 14-week abortion ban in Oregon, dragging Oregon back 41 years when abortion was made a right under the state constitution. Cecil and Preciado-McAlister support a woman’s right to access all forms of reproductive health care. They know that polls show 72% of Oregonians support abortion in all or most cases. Cecil and Preciado-McAlister will lead our state into a future that continues to protect women’s healthcare, ensuring all individuals can exercise their reproductive rights with dignity and without barriers.
Our future will depend on the choices we make today. Will Oregon continue our state’s proud history of climate leadership or refute the science of climate change? Will Oregon continue our sustainable use of natural resources or “increase the amount of annual sustained yield?” Will Oregon continue to respect, honor, and value diversity or will we allow misinformation to convince ourselves we are in a “cultural crisis?”
Our future will depend on our leadership. Vote for Bret Cecil and Lupe Preciado-McAlister.

How robots can help encourage children to be physically active
BY STEVE LUNDEBERG
Parents seeking help in encouraging toddlers to be physically active may soon need to look no further than an inexpensive robotic buddy for their kids, a new study by Oregon State University (OSU) suggests.
The findings are important because movement plays a key role in the overall health of children, both in youth and later on in adulthood, the authors note.
Researchers observed individual sessions for eight kids ages 2-3 once a week for two months in a playroom that included various toys as well as a toddler-sized GoBot: a custom, wheeled, foampadded robot designed through a collaboration between the OSU colleges of Engineering and Health.
Weekly Sessions
Weekly sessions with each of the five boys and three girls were broken
into three segments.
During one of them, the GoBot was in the room but not active, though the child was free to push and pull the robot around if he or she wanted to.
In another, the GoBot’s movements – basically keep-away maneuvers – were directed by an operator using a PlayStation DualShock4 controller, and in the third segment type, the motion was autonomous. In either scenario, the GoBot rewarded the child for getting close to it by emitting sounds, lights or bubbles.
The results showed that kids’ activity levels, measured by multiple sensors and cameras, were higher in the presence of an active robot.
“It was interesting to us that the simple autonomous routine worked as well as directly teleoperated control when it came to engaging children,” said the College of Engineering’s Naomi Fitter, who led
the study. “That means a relatively low-cost robot playmate – one that offers more intelligence and independence compared to current phone-operated robotic toys – might be feasible in the near future.”
Physical Activity Benefits
For young children, the authors say, physical activity contributes to cognitive, social and motor development and also sets the stage for better psychosocial and cardiometabolic health later on, serving as a foundation for the potential of a lifetime of healthy habits.
“High rates of sedentary behavior are a big current challenge across many phases of life, and better physical activity at any part can lead to better health outcomes,” said Fitter, who holds the endowed title of Kearney Faculty Scholar.
The researchers also note that past studies indicate a significant number of children are
below recommended physical activity guidelines, which contributes to high levels of childhood obesity and other negative health consequences.
“Toys that motivate crawling and assist with walking are widespread,” Fitter said, “but there’s a scarcity of toys designed to motivate young children to be active and explore their environments once they are ambulatory.”
Assistive robots like GoBot, she added, may be more effective than other
tools for physical activity promotion because people tend to see robots as more “peer-like and influential” than non-embodied technologies like phones or computers.
“An important point is that we’re not aiming to replace caregivers, but for parents, there can be periods of development during which it is hard to know how best to engage with your toddler,” Fitter said. “The work in our paper could lead to new robotic toys that families could play with together to
help fill those gaps.”
Collaborating with Fitter were Rafael Morales Mayoral and Ameer Helmi of the College of Engineering and Samuel W. Logan of the College of Health.
The findings are published in the Journal of Translational Engineering in Health & Medicine.

Merrilees
Codi
(Brookings, Ore.) entered an unmodified, factorystock Toyota Corolla Hybrid in Sportsman
E.T. Eliminator at the Division Finals, driving his competition vehicle the entire journey to and from the race. Local fans and racers know Kirksey better as the announcer at Samoa Drag Strip. 2024 was his first season of competition in any NHRA Summit E.T. Racing Series category, having previously competed in the Junior Drag Racing League, last in 2002. Kirksey finished fifth in the season’s points standings in Sportsman
E.T. Eliminator at Samoa Drag Strip, winning one race in the Hybrid, to earn an invite to the Division Finals as a competitor.
During Saturday’s Team Race in Las Vegas, Merrilees was able to aadvance his Super Pro and Pro entries to the third round. Kirksey achieved the same success in Sportsman, also advancing to the third round. Samoa was the only team to advance, intact, into round two of competition. The team remained intact entering round three.
For Sunday’s Summit Showdown, only drivers who placed in the Top Five at their home tracks were invited to compete for the Division Championship.

Evidence of how intense the competition would be in the by-invitationonly race was produced early, when in Pro E.T. Eliminator, Craig Merrilees was unable to advance from Round One despite a sharp .008 Reaction Time. Merrilees ran 10.338 seconds on his 10.35-second dial-in, breaking out by twelvethousandths of a second. Merrilees was given only an eight-thousandths of a second window in which he could have won the race when his first round opponent coupled an .011 Reaction Time with a dead-on-5 performance downtrack, running 10.355 seconds on their own 10.35-second dial-in.
With his Pro E.T. entry defeated, Merrilees then focused his efforts on his Super Pro entry. Merrilees made a strong showing in Super Pro, advancing two rounds prior to his defeat in Round Three. In Round One, Merrilees used a .001 Reaction Time to advance, running 6.531 seconds on his 6.50-second dial-in.
In Round Two, Merrilees was issued the bye run, but would have been difficult to get around, posting a perfect reaction time (.000) and nearly duplicating his first round performance, running 6.537 seconds on an adjusted 6.52-second dial-in. Merrilees was defeated in Round Three by .006 seconds, running two hundredths of a second over his dial-in after a .008 Reaction Time. Merrilees also competed in the Street Electric Vehicle category.
Codi Kirksey won three rounds of competition prior to being defeated in the quarterfinals of Sportsman E.T. Eliminator. Kirksey had a bye-run in round one - his only of the season. In the Round Two, when both racers left the starting line too soon, Kirksey’s -.003 reaction time was 2-thousandths of a second better than his opponent’s -.005 reaction time, turning the win light on in his lane.
In round three, Kirksey held a one-thousandth of a second starting-line advantage, diving on the
brakes in the last sixty feet of the track to run 17.969 seconds on his 17.96-second dial-in, giving his opponent a narrow 8-thousandths of a second window in which they could have won the
race. In the quarterfinals, Kirksey was disqualified after running too quickly, 17.87 seconds, against his performance standard of 17.92 seconds. Despite the defeat, Kirksey’s
appearance in the quarterfinals earned the Summit Racing Equipment Racing Series rookie a Top-Eight finish in the Pacific Division in his first season competing in the series.

together. They started out doing Show n’ Shines back in the mid-80’s,” said Lori Connelly, current Cruisers president.
And that continued community presence is being officially celebrated. The City of Brookings proclaimed October 15th as Curry County Cruisers Appreciation Day, to commemorate the club’s contributions to the area. Proceeds from club dues and shows go straight to local non-profits and charitable organizations. The Cruisers have donated over $100,000 over the last decade.
“2024 was probably our best year for donations. We were able to collect $16,250, and distribute that to 24 different charitable organizations. It was a sunny day, which made the car show absolutely fantastic. And that helps too by the way, sunny days are critical to getting in so many donations,” explained Connelly.
Their annual benefit car show, right here in BrookingsHarbor has been a highlight of the past 30 Memorial Days, and continues to be the Cruisers number one fundraising opportunity. Planning is already well underway for the 31st annual show in 2025. Everything from sponsorship to award plaques, and the annual t-shirt, the Cruisers are already on it.
The community aspect does not end there with the Cruisers, who are also serial volunteers for community events, often organizing and running parking.
“We volunteer for activities all year long. Nature’s Coastal Holiday is coming up. We park cars for Concerts in the Park over June, July, August.
So, we’re the Keeper of the Parking Lot,” Connelly said with a laugh.
Despite all the Cruisers do to help the community, at the end of the day, it all comes from like-minded locals who want to share their love for automobiles. Volunteering and fundraising is a happy bi-product of a passionate group of enthusiasts sharing that passion with each other, and with the rest of the South Coast.
“Our mission basically, which is the first of our proclamation and is our mission statement is just ‘Preserve, promote, and encourage the enjoyment of all automobiles, trucks, motorcycles’… There’s 64 paid members, but with spouses and partners, we’ve got about 115 people in the club,” said Connelly
Every member brings
something different to the table. Different ages, different tastes, and certainly different vehicles. The Cruisers’ prevue extends far beyond classic American muscle and hot rods.
“We have all ages of cars, truck, motorcycles in the club… And of all those varieties of cars we have everything from [Ford] Model A’s, to 60’s [Chevy] C10 Trucks, to premium Italian motorcycles, a Beardmore Taxi. I mean, we’ve just got so many varieties, and folks can get on the website and see some of the cars, and some of the folks we’ve donated to,” said Connelly. If that is music to your motor-enthusiast ears, or you want to help with the Cruisers’ charitable efforts, visit their official website for info on how to get involved. https://www. currycountycruisers.com/
