“Corgis Gone Rouge” inaugural event held at Gold Beach

GOLD BEACH —

On Sept. 7, at the Gold Beach Visitors Center, the inaugural “Corgis Gone Rogue” convention was held.

The idea for Corgis Gone Rogue came from the Corgi Beach Takeover, held in Seaside, started in 2013 with about 30 dogs and their humans gathering for a fun, pet-friendly event. A local Gold Beach Corgi owner, Dr. Janis, who has attended the Seaside event approached the Visitor’s Center with the idea of a Corgi gathering. After doing some research, we realized that we were the perfect location for an end-ofsummer fur-filled day.

The event was a successful fundraiser for both Wild Rivers Animal Rescue and David’s Chair Mobility Systems (the Gold Beach Visitor Center hosts two David’s Chairs and a Tow and Go trailer). Over $1,600 was raised for both non-profits through sponsorships, raffle tickets and registration for the event. Over 35 Corgis,

Corgi-cross and other dog breeds were in attendance.

Eventgoers said the Corgi races were their favorite thing to watch, with the costume contest coming in a close second. Local Corgi pup Dolly hosted a Corgi Kissing Booth and was definitely a hit with the crowd.

Vendors and artisans displayed their baked goods, canned jams and jellies, crafts and Corgiartwork and the Taqueria El Tako Loko food truck was on hand to serve up some amazing food.

We’d like to give a shout-out to Jerry’s Rogue Jets for hosting a “ Fur the Dogs, Corgis Unite” Rogue River Estuary jet boat ride for Corgis on Sept. 8. The proceeds from that fun trip went to the Gold Beach Youth Fund.

The Gold Beach Visitor Center would like to thank their sponsors, Curry Transfer and Recycling, Brookings Veterinary Clinic and Turtle Rock RV as well as all of the local businesses who donated items for the raffles.

Next year’s event planning has begun. If you are interested in taking part, contact the Gold Beach Visitor Center at 541-247-7526 or email gbvc@visitgoldbeach.com.

Brookings, Oregon: ‘Festival City USA’

Curry Coastal Pilot

Those of us who travel up and down Oregon may realize that the South Coast, and more specifically Brookings, is often hosting some sort of festival or special event.

Local festivals go a long way toward engaging community members, bringing in day-trippers and tourists, and helping local businesses through vending and tabling opportunities. That goes without mentioning that the proceeds from many festivals go directly to local charities and non-profit organizations.

To find out more about Brookings’ festivals and how they can help the city move forward, the Pilot spoke with Crissy Cooper, Creative Director for Insider of Southern Oregon Events. Raised an Oregonian, Cooper has had a major hand in the planning of some of Brookings’ biggest festivals and is one of the main voices behind the push to make Brookings ‘Festival City USA’.

“I feel like our city is doing so many great things. So many different groups are coming out of the woodwork to revive festivals. They’re putting in the work to build new ones,” said Cooper. “It’s really interesting that you start your tourism season here around Memorial Day with the Azalea Festival, put on by the City of Brookings. And it just keeps going through Christmas time with Nature’s Coastal Holiday.

What people usually say is there’s always something to do when you come over to Brookings.”

Some of those highlights from this year saw new festivals put in strong second years, and many older festivals returning after hiatus, often due to pauses during the pandemic in 2019.

Back in July, The Slam’n Salmon Ocean Derby returned with a splash. The fishing celebration brought attention to one of Brooking’s biggest and most important pastimes and industries. Community partners contribut-

Opinion & Letters

Letter to the Editor

As someone who grew up in St. Timothy’s Church, was married there, and attended for several years as an adult as well, I am pleased to see the recent front page article detailing how the City of Brookings will be paying their dues back to St. Timothy’s! I am one of the founding members of the Love Your Neighbor Sunday sack lunch program. We started with $25 in our coffers and had to figure out how to make that stretch to feed 50 people sack lunches after church on Sundays. Within weeks, more donations of both food and money poured in and that meager $25 more than quadrupled. It is ironic to me that Ron Hedenskog himself gave the green light for the Sunday sack lunch program over 10 years ago.

St. Timothy’s has an extensive history of loving their neighbors in many ways. My grandmother, Verla Johanson started taking me at the tender age of 3 to church. I remember her proudly showing me

the room where the food bank was held, explaining to me what a food bank is and how many folks benefitted from it. I was in awe of the various charities the women’s guild donated to and assisted, and it sparked my passion for helping others.

St. Timothy’s embraced my family in our various times of need when we fell apart at times and needed help in multiple ways. My grandmother’s funeral was held there, as was my sister’s. There was standing room only!

The amount of love lavished upon my family is something I will never forget. My children have also experienced the love and care from the members of St. Timothy’s. No one who seeks help is ever turned away. It’s amazed me over the years. God bless and long live St. Timothy’s!

Here is the full quote from Malmberg from the September 9th, 2024, council meeting: “I wanted to say, how unfortunate that things have gone this far. It’s all kind of stemmed from not being a good neighbor, in my opinion, and not working with your community to find a path forward and address the needs, while minimizing the impacts. I appreciate the churches and community leaders that tried to do this, find a balance. I think it’s sad and unfortunate that one group saw it necessary to go this route rather than work together. My hope is that, moving forward, there’s more effort to work with the community, recognize that what we do has an impact on those around us, and strive to be a good neighbor. That’s all.”

The Wild Rivers Film Fest returned for a second year in August, bringing movie buffs and filmmakers from around the world together to celebrate their hard work here in Brookings. The four-day fest saw arthouse indies, romping b-horror, insightful docs, and foreign films grace the screens at the Redwood Theatre and Chetco Playhouse.

“For the Film Festival, growing it to more days is in discussion, but we’re really trying to solidify our team first and make sure we know what we’re doing, especially given it was just our second year this year. But I think its just getting better and better,” said Cooper.

Improving the festivals comes with frank discussion about what is working and what needs reconsidered. The recent Brookings-Harbor Docktoberfest, while a fun event as always, missed the mark in terms of truly celebrating German culture. So, the organizers are taking a look at how to reinterpret the annual September cele-

“I don’t know that our community can support a German-themed festival. I think we should go back to the drawing board on that one. We do have an Oompah band out of Crescent City, but we have a lot of Rock n’ Roll people here, who like to dance and rock out. It’s just finding those German vendors, I think its one where we can see some growth,” said Cooper.

With next year’s festival schedule set for announcement in November, there are even more festivals coming back to Brookings.

“We’ve got Brookings Kites bringing back the Southern Oregon Kite Festival. It’ll be a really different kind of festival. That team is going to be amazing because many of them aren’t just impassioned by kites, but they were also on the original committee that ran the classic festival for 27 years.

I know Insider of Southern Oregon were trying to do a Bootleg Festival and were trying to bring back the Crab and Wine Festival, which happens at the end of January,” said Cooper.

“Those are just a couple that are emerging and the ideas are growing as long as we can get sponsors and vendors behind it. Not all

of these things make a lot of money, if any at all in the first several years, but it’s really about building our community partnerships, and about what people want to see. If we can start the thought process that there’s something to do here every weekend when it’s a bajillion degrees over in the valley, when everyone’s faces are melting off, they can come to the coast and we have live music and our community has a pretty decent nightlife.”

excitement and bringing energy into the community can only serve as a boon if organized well. Frequent fests will bring micro-tourism into the community, will help fill business through increasing visitors and sponsorship opportunities, and will encourage younger folks to view Brookings as a happening place to live.

Pauline McAmoil

Our dear mother, Pauline McAmoil, passed

and enjoying each other’s company, best friends until the end. They completed 232 in the 7 years she was there.

Pauline was born February 15, 1925, in Hollenberg, Kansas. Her family, six sisters and one brother, moved off the family farm during the depression to find a better life. They settled in La Grande, Oregon. At the age of 19, she put herself through beauty school in Walla Walla, Washington, which began her life-long career. She lived in Brookings for 57 years where she was a successful business owner, running a large salon during the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s. Pauline was incredibly creative, displaying her talent in knitting, crocheting, gardening, and sewing. But her true love was woodworking and stained glass making. She made all her own bedroom furniture out of myrtle wood, and multiple stained glass lamp shades, steppingstones and wall hangings. She was productive well into her late 80s. She also enjoyed camping as a family and hunting, always filling her tag. She is survived by her children, Dean Early and Peggy (dcd), Diane Kreider, Mike (Robert) Blank and Polly, John Blank and Georgia, along with many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. She was a wonderful mother who was always there when we needed her most, offering support, wisdom and love in abundance. We are all so blessed to have her so long, with such wonderful memories. She will be missed by all.

remote and underresourced regions of the state.”

The Manley Art Center in Brookings might be the perfect example of what one of these mighty arts providers can do. Home to the Pelican Bay Arts Association, the center provides workshops and outreach for artists and amateurs of all ages. A small operating grant like this helps them continue to bring in exciting new classes, while covering the basics and keeping the lights on.

“Being able to pay teachers for workshops, being able to do outreach programs with the community and different partners like the Chetco Library. It allows us to upgrade the gallery if needed, and it basically just keeps us operating,” said Joarden Beaudry, the Art Center Manager at the Manley.

Those workshops and programs continue to expand. Among its offerings, Manley hosts traditional art workshops and classes, like Pastels for Kids and a Watercolor Workshop, both taking place in early October.

Still, the Manley has made a concerted effort to expand the boundaries of its programming. Recently, they held a workshop for pixel art tiles, recreating sprites from retro video games and bringing in

a different crowd than usual. The same went for their Microsoft Word Workshop. Helping older members of the community get up to speed with an essential computer tool is an important service, but it also helped to foster the community’s writers by teaching the convenience of word processors.

“We’re definitely trying to get more foot traffic, and trying to expand our horizons on art.

Anything can be classified as art, not just painting or acrylics and oils. So we’re trying to expand to a bigger horizon in Brookings, Gold Beach, and Crescent City. Trying to get different people

interested, and newer people into workshops,” said Beaudry. The Manley always has its rotating member gallery, where new art is displayed every month. One of the best opportunities to check out the new selection is during the Brookings Second Saturday Art Walk, where the Manley is always a participating venue. This all ties into the Manley and Pelican Bay Arts Association’s number one mission, “To nurture art and artists.”
