Brookings gains a centenarian, as Warren Glaze turns 100

For the Pilot Long time resident of Brookings, Warren Glaze will celebrate his 100th birthday November 4, 2024. He and his late wife, Dee moved to Brookings in1992. Warren grew up on a farm in Canada, was a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force, 19421944, and a teacher of Physics and Biology in Ethiopia. During his last three years of living in Africa, he also trained new teachers on how to teach Science. When Warren met Dee, he discovered a kindred adventurous spirit. From 1976-1983, the couple spent their summers commercial fishing for salmon out of Crescent City. Upon Warren’s retirement from academia in 1984 (ending twelve years as the Blackford High School principal in San Jose, CA) he and Dee began a lengthy exploration of Africa, living in their RV for a year at a time. They balanced their RV travels with sailing their 42-footer off the Pacific coast. The boat wasn’t the Glaze’s only alternate means of transportation. Warren only recently (five years ago) sold his plane which he had flown and

The Golden State and the Beaver State took another step in easing the thin blue line separating California and Oregon.

The Fred Endert Pool will undergo two major projects that will interrupt service, closing the Crescent City pool for an anticipated 12 weeks. The Pool’s closure will effectuate December 2 and last through February 2025. The renovations include HVAC and Locker Room floor projects.

The Crescent City swimming pool is the only public pool that operates during winter months in both Del Norte and Curry counties.

Connected Senior Program bridges generational divide through technology

GOLD BEACH, OR - The Connected Senior Program successfully launched in Gold Beach last week. This collaborative effort, spearheaded by Beacon Broadband’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Bill Gerski, and Soroptimist Club of Gold Beach President, Debbie

Knight, aims to equip senior citizens with essential digital literacy skills, empowering them to navigate the digital world confidently. The program’s inaugural class in Gold Beach saw enthusiastic senior citizens eager to embrace new technological skills. Paired

with tech-savvy high school student volunteers, the seniors embarked on their digital journey, beginning with basics like using a trackpad, powering on a computer, and exploring various applications. The classroom buzzed with intergenerational connections as conversations

flowed easily between the seniors and students. Lively discussions about high school football filled the air, while at another table, family histories were shared. This intergenerational learning environment fostered connections between different age groups, allowing participants to share their unique perspectives and experiences. Notably, Oregon State Representative Court Boice’s mother, Meryl Boice, was among the enthusiastic participants. Under the guidance of instructor Kassandra Marley, Beacon Broadband’s Technical Services Representative, the seniors diligently absorbed the foundational lesson. The program’s curriculum, designed to increase in complexity week by week, promises to equip participants with a comprehensive understanding of digital tools.

The Connected Senior Program addresses a critical need in Curry County, where 26% of the population is over the age of 65, the highest percentage in Oregon. By empowering seniors with digital literacy, the program aims to help them stay

Southwestern Oregon Community College invites the community to join us on Thursday, Nov. 21, at 6 p.m., for “The Physics of Anime” with Dr. Roman Gomez from Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Gomez will also be giving us an update on what he has been working on at SwRI. This is a free event; all ages are welcome. Coos County residents can join us in-person in the Umpqua Hall lecture room (room 184) on the Coos Campus, 1988 Newmark Ave., Coos Bay. Curry County residents can join us for a watch party in the Community Room on the Curry Campus, 96082 Lone Ranch Parkway, Brookings. For those not able to attend in person the lecture will be streamed live on the College’s YouTube channel at: www. youtube.com/@southwesternOR/streams. Anime is a medium that has recently become quite popular. Given its nation of origin, it introduces us to some very new concepts and ideas. Some religious and cultural concepts are distinctly Japanese and help broaden our social and cultural worldviews. However, while familiar, others may still be relatively new to many viewers, one of which is science. While some anime directly addresses scientific principles, others, especially those in the science fiction genre, introduce these concepts in their storytelling. Surprisingly, anime sometimes gets their physics right, giving us a vehicle for enjoyably discussing very complex concepts if we allow a few “miracles” to occur. This

Endorsement of Court Boice for Oregon House District 1 State Representative

Working with Court Boice has been a pleasure. Court is one of the hardestworking people around. He has been giving of himself to the people of Oregon for decades.

His business and leadership experience make him very effective in the House of Representatives.

Court’s goal is to reverse the tyranny perpetrated on Oregonians by the controlling party for the last four decades. It is easy to see that we are not better off today than we were 10, 20, 30, or 40 years ago.

Court Boice supports and works for middle-class Oregonians and always will. Are you tired of the out-of-control forest fires, increasingly high taxes, illicit drugs, and homeless folks living in tents on our public lands? Are you tired of child molestation bills being passed by the opposition party? Are you tired of seeing the hands of the police tied so they can not arrest drug dealers? Are you tired of seeing logging, fishing, and agriculture being limited in Oregon?

Thank God, that Court Boice has been fighting for you in the legislature, and thank God for men and women like him who are standing up to the opposing party that doesn’t care about “we the people” of Oregon.

With all my heart, I ask you to vote for Court Boice for State Representative in House District 1 and take a stand with Court to turn the tide on the destruction of Oregon that has been ongoing for 40 years.

Yours truly,

Larry D Reeves DCRCC Chairman

As a visitor to your beautiful enclave this past weekend (Oct. 19), I was impressed by the sheer number of youth utilizing the bicycle pump track at Beachfront Park. They were orderly, well equipped (helmets!), and genuinely excited by their new playground. It’s a great step to keeping our next generation occupied and out of trouble. I’m sure their parents appreciate tired kids at the end of the day too!

Letters to the Editor

Since moving to Brookings 18 years ago we have gotten to know Court Boice and find him to be friendly, helpful and generous. His love of America, Oregon and Curry County is obvious in his hard work and dedication. Whenever we contact Court with a question or concern we receive a timely response.

Having survived the Chetco Bar Fire in 2017 we appreciate his work on wildfire mitigation. As an ocean fisherman we appreciate his efforts to get the Gold Beach Coast Guard Station reopened. We are glad that he is a man of faith and patriotism. Court works tirelessly for his constituents and we support his reelection.

Please vote for Court Boice for State Representative.

Thank you,

Lou and Dora Costa Brookings

I am writing to endorse Representative Court Boice for Oregon State Representative - Coos, Curry, and Douglas Counties. I have had the pleasure of knowing Court for over twelve years, and I can confidently say that he possesses the necessary qualities and skills to continue excelling in this position.

The Oregon citizens living and working in Southwest Oregon face several issues setting us apart from many other areas of Oregon. Born in Gold Beach and living in our District for his entire life, Court’s knowledge and actions always lead to solutions that will help resolve the problems we’re facing. Those successes will come from lawmakers that are knowledgeable, experienced and who hold strong foundations. Representative Boice has demonstrated through his actions the necessary skills needed to have positive influences on legislative decisions which will produce our needed outcomes in Salem.

As a 3-decade citizen of Oregon’s Southern Coast, I believe that it is essential to elect leaders who are dedicated to improving our quality of life, our communities, and our entire state.

Court Boice is one such leader.

I am confident that Court will continue to have a positive impact in the state legislature and work towards the betterment of our Southcoast and all of Oregon. No one will outwork him in bridging the unfortunate Urban-Rural Divisions. Please vote earlyin this critical 2024 Election. I strongly urge you to join me in voting for Representative Court Boice.

Sincerely,

George Rhodes Brookings

Vote Court Boice – Oregon House District 1

There is a symbolic meaning to call incumbent Oregon House Representative Court Boice the “Boice of Reason.” You can also call him the “Boice of Common Sense, Integrity and Grit.”

Representative Boice is NOT like many politicians offering platitudes in an election campaign and followed up with inaction when elected.

Court Boice is a man of the people. He listens, researches, studies the issues of his district and of Oregon and fully commits. He diligently works and speaks for the people. As a state legislator and former County Curry Commissioner, Boice taps into the pulse of his elected constituents and those in our state overall. His years and experience in elected offices have

demonstrated he truly puts his constituents’ best interests to the forefront. That is why I wholly endorse Court Boice for Oregon’s House District 1 and encourage you to vote for him.

Patrick Lewandowski Roseburg

I am endorsing Court Boice for re-election for State Rep., House District #1. Rep. Boice was sworn in on one day and was in a House Committee hearing the next day. He doesn’t hide from his constituents and is always available to listen to their concerns. He was ready to serve on day one. Thank you,

Also impressive, but not the least bit surprising, are the home improvement projects he single handedly designed and built just a few years ago, while in his 80’s. If you want to know how to construct a beautiful wrought iron gate or create a lovely patio with fire pit and all, just talk to Warren. He learned many skills growing up on that farm in Canada.

Gold Beach — Kissing Rock Coffee, a proud member of the Wild Rivers Coast Food Trail, has achieved remarkable success at the prestigious 2024 Golden Bean Americas competition, earning four bronze medals for its exceptional coffee roasts. Kissing Rock Coffee’s award-winning roasts, Kissing Rock Blend, Dark Horse, and Mountain of Gold, are not only crafted with care but also showcase the unique qualities of the Oregon coast. Kissing Rock Coffee imports beans from the finest coffee growing regions in the world, but better yet, they also grow coffee throughout California and locally right here on the Oregon coast. Their beans are air roasted in-house, ensuring the freshest, highest-quality coffee for their community and visitors.

You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to fee and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. CITY OF CRESCENT CITY

California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call 530-2462727; Toll Free: 844-3336766, or visit this internet website: calforeclosures. biz, using the file number assigned to this case: TS#24-3101, to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the street address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call the trustee’s information line at 530-2462727; Toll Free: 844-3336766, or visit this Internet Website: calforeclosures. biz, using the file number assigned to this case: TS #24-3101. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call or (888) 902-3989 or visit these internet websites or www.nestortrustee. com, using the file number assigned to this case 202408820-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANTS: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call or (888) 902-3989 or visit these internet websites or www. nestortrustee.com, using the file number assigned to this case 2024-08820CA to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Pools

Brookings does have a public outdoor pool that is open during the summer (Memorial Day through Labor Day).

Recently, the City of Brookings turned over pool management to South Coast Community Aquatics (SCCA). Many Curry County residents use the Fred Endert Pool during the winter months; that option

will not be available this winter.

SCCA approached Crescent City staff to consider the possibility of a partnership to open the Brookings pool for the winter months.

• SCCA would be responsible for all facility-related costs, including utilities, electricity, propane, chemicals, supplies, insurance and facilities equipment maintenance.

• Crescent City would

Leonard Krug, Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, Friend, and Colleague passed away on October 6, 2024 at the age of 67.

As an avid sportsman and fishing advocate Leonard left us doing what he loved spending his days on the ocean and rivers. Born in Ashland Oregon, Leonard spent most of his life living in the Southern Oregon area. Graduating Ashland High School in 1976 he attended Southern Oregon State College for two years with a major in Wildlife Sciences and a minor in Music until he chanced upon a temporary summer position with Pacific Power and never went back. He climbed the ranks from Meter Reader to Journeyman Lineman. If you spent any time with Leonard, you

provide the lifeguards and supervisory staff for program operation and bear the cost.

Pool program would include a limited schedule, mutually agreed upon between Crescent City and SCCA. Morning and afternoon sessions Monday through Saturday are anticipated.

Swimming, Exercise, Recreational swimming and times for swim team training and the possibility of swim lessons may be included.

SCCA has committed to keep the outdoor pool heated at 83 degrees.

The city estimates the costs of the three-month Program will be an approximately $10,000 to a high of $18,000 to $28,000. The proposed agreement calls for a 50/50 revenue split.

Councilors expressed their enthusiastic support as final details are worked out.

Leonard was a lifelong learner, and his passion was always around hunting and fishing. After retiring he maintained a passion for volunteerism and working in service of others. He joined the Oregon South Coast Fishermen and was a founding member and President of the Oregon Anglers Alliance. He brought the Recreational and Commercial Fishing communities together with Legislators, County and State Officials and all levels of Government along with Tribal Agencies to provide and protect sustainable fishing opportunities and resources for everyone.

Leonard is survived by his wife Anna Krug and 4 children; Chris Williamson (Jennifer), Andrew Krug, Christa Brasseur (Beaux), and Jeff Clark (Hayley); and 7 grandchildren. A powerful force for positivity in the lives of many, he was always there for advice, a sympathetic ear, or to share anecdotes about his own experience. His values, commitment to excellence, and love for life survive on in his family; both genetic and extended. With fins and without.

Sharp divide in Oregon over bill to step up logging to prevent wildfires

For the last 30 years, shrub and grass fires have burned far more acres and destroyed more property in the West than forest fires, and the same was true this season.

Still, Republicans in the U.S. House – including Oregon’s two Republican representatives – are hoping Congress will pass a bill before year’s end that would tackle increasingly large wildfires in the West by scaling back environmental regulations to make it easier to log and cut vegetation in federal forests, which account for more than 60% of the forests in Oregon.

Proposed by Arkansas Republican Rep. Bruce Westerman and California Democrat Rep. Scott Peters, the “Fix Our Forests Act” passed the U.S. House on Sept. 24 with 268 representatives in favor and 151 opposed, including Oregon’s four Democratic representatives. It is expected to get a vote in the U.S. Senate after the November general election, according to Hank Stern, a spokesperson for Oregon’s U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden, a Democrat.

Proponents say the bill would restore forest health, increase resiliency to catastrophic wildfires and protect communities by expediting environmental analyses while reducing frivolous lawsuits and step up restoration projects. But opponents, including environmentalists and Democrats, say it would open millions of acres of federal land to logging without sci-

entific review or community input, potentially increasing the risk of wildfires while rolling back regulations to protect endangered and threatened species.

To counteract the bill, Oregon’s Democratic House and Senate members are introducing legislation that would direct federal investments in community preparedness and home hardening.

The Biden administration is also opposed to the bill and published a statement a day before the House vote, saying it contains “a number of provisions that would undermine basic protections for communities, lands, waters and wildlife.” More than 85 environmental groups also submitted a letter to the House Committee on Natural Resources opposing the bill.

The bill comes on top of calls in Oregon from state House Republicans to roll back restrictions on logging in state and private forests.

Three prominent state lawmakers recently called on their peers in the state Legislature to reform forest management and logging policies they say would prevent large fires from starting and spreading.

More than 2,000 wildfires in Oregon this season have burned a record of about 2 million acres – and not largely in forests. About 75% of the acres scorched were in grass and shrubland, mostly in eastern Oregon, according to the Wildland Mapping Institute.

Forest plan

The bill would promote more collaboration on

wildfire preparedness and response among local, state, federal and tribal agencies, and allow for greater investment in new technology meant to improve information-sharing about fire risks, including at the individual property level. But a cornerstone of the bill is expediting and circumventing some environmental reviews that now must be done before federal agencies approve areas for post-fire logging, pre-fire logging, or “thinning” – which involves hiring timber companies to cut trees that could be dry fuel for a fire but also requires typically that they get some marketable timber out of the deal – or burning, on federal lands.

It would allow 10,000acre swaths of forest to forgo federally required environmental reviews, including a site-specific review of potential impacts to threatened or endangered species, before logging takes place. Currently, only up to 3,000acre swaths can be exempted from reviews required by the National Environmental Policy Act.

Proponents of the Fix Our Forests Act say it would speed up cumbersome environmental reviews that have kept the U.S. Forest Service and the Department of the Interior from initiating projects that would reduce fire-fueling vegetation on the landscape.

In a release explaining her support of the bill, Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer, a Republican representing Oregon’s 5th Congressional District that includes Linn County, parts of Multnomah and Marion counties and

most of Clackamas and Deschutes counties, said the act would help prevent another record wildfire season like the one this summer.

“It’s a comprehensive proposal that would improve forest management in areas at the highest risk for wildfires by using advanced science and technology. Providing needed resources to those affected, and working to prevent wildfires from starting in the first place, will continue to be top priorities,” she said in the release.

A summary of the bill shared by Chavez-DeRemer describes millions of acres of federal forests as “overgrown” and in need of largescale intervention.

Democratic alternatives

But opponents of the bill say that in many landscapes at high risk of fire, logging can contribute to the drying

out of forests that further perpetuates fires. Researchers have found that unless thinning is targeted around communities at high risk so as to prevent homes and buildings from burning, thinning forest tracts far from people and infrastructure is costly and has little beneficial return.

A multi-year study of forest treatments such as commercial thinning and prescribed fire across Western states found wildfire only occurs on about 1% of treated forests, and that it’s largely ineffective because those treatments last only about 10 to 20 years before the vegetation grows back. Studies have shown thinning and prescribed burning around homes and cities can be effective at keeping wildfires from moving quickly into communities.

U.S. Rep. Andrea Salinas, a Democrat representing

Oregon’s 6th District in the heart of the Willamette Valley, is co-sponsoring a bill called the “Community Protection and Wildfire Resilience Act” that would invest in community and home hardening, landscape resiliency to wildfire and community preparedness plans. And in the U.S. Senate, Wyden of Oregon is drafting a similar bill called the Wildfire Safe Communities Act of 2024. Wyden said in an email that the Fix Our Forests Act would make federal forest management more controversial and less successful.

“The bill undermines bedrock environmental laws, and would allow poorly designed, large commercial projects that threaten community drinking water, wildlife and recreation opportunities to proceed with inadequate environmental review,” Wyden said.
