Local VFW Hosts Veterans’ Ceremony

In Brookings, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) held a ceremony that spoke to the meaning of Veterans Day and why we celebrate this day. Veterans shared their stories of service to our country and what it means to them and their families.

“We’re grateful for our country and glad we served,” said Jerry Rice who served in the Navy.

After stories were shared, a flag retirement ceremony was conducted as well as a three-

gun salute and bugle call to Taps.

“We’re lucky to have so many great veterans in our community,” said Court Boice, newly elected state representative for House District 1, who was on hand for the ceremony. The weather cooperated for the end of the ceremony so that the many who were present could see the flyover of two F-15s that are stationed out of the 173rd Fighter Wing from Kingsley Field in Klamath Falls. The Brookings VFW is cur-

rently organizing a fund raiser to help maintain the building and keep the chapter alive. A commemorative brick can be purchased with a loved-one’s name engraved on it and it will lay in the newly installed area in front of the post.

“I’m looking for ways to spread the word about this post,” said Jerry Law post commander for the Brookings VFW. Law served in the Air Force and the Army.

The Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS) is making a push for enrollment in one of Child Welfare’s newest statewide programs. The Certified Respite program, which launched in 2023, has aimed to give resource families (the new parlance for ‘foster families’) a helping hand in caring for vulnerable children and youth in Coos and Curry Counties who are impacted by foster care. Respite providers give resource parents a chance to recharge by taking over caregiving duties for anywhere from a few hours to a few days at a time.

Opinion & Letters

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Who’s enforcing the Camping Ban?

It's an outright delusion that Gold Beach police actually enforce the Overnight Camping Ban. Pleade witness for yourself.

A drive along the roughly paved road between the beach and the airport air strip will tell the real story. Tent after tent, old parked RV's with shades drawn, stolen shopping carts, trash strewn, night afternight, is the reality.

Why put ordinances on the books, why have ordinances, laws at all, or even police in uniform, if we're not willing to enforce?

Very disappointing for those of us who are living here, and witnessing beautiful Gold Beach turn very ugly, very quickly.

Laura Catherine (Moffitt) Gardner 04/22/1934 – 08/10/2024

Laura passed away peacefully at her home with family at her side, at the age of 90. She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Lee Gardner.

Laura is survived by her sister Peggy (Moffitt) Perkins, her children: Fletcher (Helen) Gardner, Sterling Gardner, and Nellie (Jerry) Fox; numerous grandkids, great-grandkids, great-greatgrandkids... and Buttons.

Laura was a wonderful, loving wife, Mom, Grandma, homemaker, and friend to many. Laura enjoyed a full life, hunting, fishing, growing her large gardens that she canned to help feed her family all year long. Laura shared her veggies. She travelled the world.

Laura was a very talented artist, in every venue she ventured into - drawing, painting, photography, sewing, stained glass, her beautiful cake decorating, and so much more.

Laura raised a few extra kids and many wild animals: 2 bear cubs, a raccoon or two, bottle-fed calves, baby pigs, a coyote, a bobcat and

a screech owl, just to name a few.

Laura will be missed by everyone that knew her.

A Celebration of Life to honor her will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at the Howonquet Hall, 101 Indian Court, Smith River, California. A Potluck will follow the Celebration.

Lorraine passed away on the 5th of November in Longmont, Colorado where she lived for the past 12 years. She was very proud that she had lived to be 95! She will be sorely missed by family and friends.

Lorraine was born on March 17, 1929 in Mayville, North Dakota. She was the youngest of 9 children. She married Don Sigourney on May 31, 1947 and they were married for 50 years. Don worked for Exxon and together the family travelled for his work to Nicaragua and Sicily

Lorraine was a stayat-home mom while her children were young, and later went to work at a travel agency. She found her calling and bought out the owner to start her own travel agency. She was the owner of Martinez Travel for many years and was very successful. In her role she was able to travel around the world, which was something she truly enjoyed. Years later she sold the travel agency

in order to retire with her husband. They continued to travel during retirement.

Lorraine enjoyed all of her trips and made a number of new friends. She also collected a great deal of items from around the world.

She used her interior design skills incorporate them into our home. Wherever they lived, Lorraine was very outgoing and social; she entertained a great deal and had a lot of dear friends. When they retired and moved to Oregon, they enjoyed having family and friends visit them there.

Lorraine was very creative throughout her life. She loved interior design, photography, painting, and making greeting cards on her computer.

After Don’s passing, she stayed in Brookings for a number of years. In 2012 she moved to Longmont, Colorado to be closer to family.

Lorraine is survived by her son Ron and his wife Mary. They are parents to grandchildren Eileen and

Patrick. She is also survived by daughter Sherri and her husband Jack. They are parents to Selena and Lindsey. Lindsey and Chris are parents to great grandchildren Molly and Penny. She was preceded in death by her husband Don, who died in 1997. She is also preceded in death by her parents; her sisters Goldie and Jean; and her brothers Arthur and Harry. In addition, she has lost several nephews and dear friends over the years.

Mushroom enthusiasts from around the region gathered in Brookings for the annual Wild Rivers Mushroom festival held at the Chetco Brewing Company on November 9th and 10th.

The public was treated to a variety of over 200 mushrooms that were gathered by volunteers on the Thursday and Friday prior to the event.

“We had nearly fifty volunteers that went out and foraged the local area for mushrooms,” said Kathleen Dickson, committee president of the Wild Rivers Mushroom Club. “They brought them all in on Friday afternoon so that we could get set up for our big event.”

Every volunteer that brought in a mushroom sample was given a free pass to the festival.

“Most of those that harvested are club members,” said Dickson. “They were instructed to bring different sizes and a bit of the habitat where the mushroom was harvested from.”

Each mushroom on display was identified and labeled with information about which area of our region it was harvested from and if it was edible.

In addition to the variety of mushroom samples, vendors were on hand to sell their local wears and regionally collected mushrooms.

“It’s really great to have so many people come out want to be a part of what’s going on,” said Tayler

Mushroom Festival

McCann a local potter and owner of Piece of Mud out of Crescent City, CA.

“This is my first time at the festival and I’ve had a great response.”

This year’s festival marked the sixth year of the event.

“We did have a break in 2020/21 because of Covid, but came back strong in 2022,” said Dickson. “This year we had over 1,200 people visit us between Saturday and Sunday.”

Besides the hundreds of varieties of mushrooms and several local vendors there were also six different lectures that were offered to the public this year, three on Saturday and three on Sunday, each

with its own learning point.

The six lectures given were: Unlocking Hidden Foraging Spots: Advanced Techniques for Mushroom Hunters by Jeremy Collison; Bioregions of The United States--From A Mushroom's Perspective by Christian Schwarz; Grow Your Own, Mushrooms, That Is! By Charlie Bruder; Introduction to Mushrooms 101 by Rachel Zoller; Medicinal Mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest by Logan Keister and Mushrooms: Catching 'Em, Keeping 'Em and Cooking 'Em by Pam McElroy & Anna Russo.

housing.

“The development is the first low-income housing project to work directly with local developers,” said CORE Executive Director Diana Carter. “We are thankful to our project partner, AB Innovations LLC, who are a Curry County based affordable housing developer and general contractor.”

The Wild Chinook Inn will be transformed into individual residences. The housing unit will have nine 1-bedroom units, seven efficiency units and two 2-bedrooms units that are all American Disability Act (ADA) accessible. “Not only will there be housing, but a community center that has a large lounge with a kitchen, bathrooms and a common laundry area for all the residents to

use,” said Carter. “There will also be an office so that there can be on-stie services and case management.”

Since the idea’s conception in June of 2023, Core has been working with City of Gold Beach, Tolowa Dee-Ni’ Nation, Coos-Curry Housing Authority, Rural Oregon Continuum of Care, Rural Roots Collaborative and the Fair Housing Council of Oregon to bring this project to life.

“We’re really grateful for all the support from

the community and local and state governments,” said Carter. “We hope that this is just the beginning and we can add further housing by building some cottages behind the grass field. We’re also working on getting the large parking lot across the street.”

Carter added, “Educating the community, the pubic about homelessness is important, especially when it comes to our veterans.”

The housing is slated to be available by August of 2025.

Hikers dressed in layers with rain

and water-proof walking shoes as the groups were out in the weather learning about the bio-diverse nature of where particular mushrooms grow, their

cycle, how to forage mushrooms and which ones are editable. No foraging was allowed during the hikes.

In our region, the diverse bioregion for mushroom growth is located in the foggy rain and higher altitude coastal range forests and along the coastal sand dune areas.

“The mushroom festival

is the club’s biggest fund raiser,” said Dickson. “The purpose of the club is to educate the general public about the amazing life of wild mushrooms and how to preserve that amazing world and make it fun in the process.”

The Wild Rivers Mushroom Club was formed in 2006 to help protect the biological integrity of the natural areas and educate the general populus about the mushrooms that grow along the 101-mile corridor of the Southern Oregon and Northern California region known as the Wild Rivers Coast.

“We keep getting better at this every year,” said Dickson “We plan to continue putting on a festival as long as the public enjoys it.”

Tensions Escalate in Curry County as Sheriff and Commissioners Continue to Clash

The bitter conflict between law enforcement and county government has reached a boiling point, leaving residents concerned about the future of public safety in their community. Curry County has become the stage for an increasingly acrimonious dispute between Sheriff John Ward and the county Board of Commissioners. The conflict, which has been simmering for months, cen

ters on budget allocations, management decisions, and accusations of overreach from both sides.

since 2014, and who ran unopposed in the November 5 election, finds himself at odds with the Board of Commissioners over funding and operational decisions. The sheriff has accused the board of micromanagement and undermining his authority, while commissioners contend that Ward has been uncooperative and resistant to necessary oversight.

and give him to a former deputy, a move that Sheriff Ward vehemently opposed. The sheriff had previously described D'Arvit as a "dirty dog" lacking proper training, which prompted commissioners to investigate the K9's involvement in past cases. Commissioner Brad Alcorn defended the board's actions, stating, "We're working on a plan for re-envisioning public safety in Curry County." This plan includes discussions with local police departments and efforts to address resource management in the county. The dispute has had tangible consequences for public safety in Curry

County. Budget cuts have led to significant staffing reductions in the sheriff's office, including the loss of two positions in 911 dispatch, two corrections positions, and 15 positions in the criminal, civil, and patrol divisions. In response to the growing crisis, former county commissioner Christopher Paasch has proposed creating a Law Enforcement Service District. This initiative would ask voters to approve a property tax to generate approximately $4.2 million annually for the sheriff's office, potentially funding eight patrol deputies, support staff, and dispatch personnel. The conflict has not

gone unnoticed by the public. At recent commission meetings, residents have voiced their concerns and frustrations. Some, like Brookings resident Andre Bay, have accused the board of undermining the sheriff and contributing to a communication breakdown between Ward and the commissioners.

Adding another layer of complexity to the situation, Sheriff Ward filed a state bar complaint against Ted Fitzgerald, the county's director of operations, in early September. This action prompted Fitzgerald to present the Board of Commissioners with a conflict-of-interest disclosure, raising questions about his

ability to continue representing the sheriff's office in legal matters.

As the dispute continues, concerns are growing about its impact on public safety and the overall functioning of county government. The stalemate in communication between the sheriff and the board since August has left many issues unresolved and created uncertainty about the future of law enforcement in Curry County.

The situation in Curry County reflects broader challenges faced by rural communities across the United States, where limited resources and competing priorities often lead to difficult decisions and conflicts

under this contract. The City was awarded $246,113 in CDBG grant funds for the Family Resource Center Mobile Food Pantry. Citizens will be given the opportunity to make their comments known and questions answered related to the grant listed above. The outcome of this conflict could have far-reaching implications for public safety, local governance, and the delicate balance of power in our, as well as other, small, rural counties throughout the nation.

In partnership with Every Child Oregon, and their Coos and Curry affiliates, ODHS provides assessment, training, and certification so that you can make a positive impact in the life of a child or young adult going through the immense flux that can occur in foster care.

In speaking with Bonnie Ell, the Resource Family Retention and Recruitment Champion for our District, we got an idea of how the program got started.

“[We] listened to resource parents, and in hearing that they needed some extra support in the work that they were doing to care for kids in foster care, this program was proposed to and approved by the Oregon State legislature. Our hope is that resource parents will feel better supported in their fostering journey and able to provide a safe, stable and loving home for the children or young adults that they are caring for. We also hope that by bringing another caring adult into the child or young adult’s life, they too will be better equipped to face the hardships associated with foster care,” explained Ell.

Respite providers can give kids a greater sense of support from the community. It can be a huge relief to resource parents, as well, as they are able to take time for themselves and recharge, like this resource parent explained:

“The program has been amazing. Having respite care available, I was able to attend my appointments, take time away for my self-care and not have to worry as my kiddos are safe. Amazing program and such a need for foster families,” said a Coos

The experience can be positive for everyone. Children and young adults in foster care get an addition to their support system and can gain new skills and unique experiences. Resource parents get a much-needed break for themselves, and the certified respite providers have an important impact on a kid in need and help contribute to a sense of community for everyone.

As this local respite provider explained:

“I love being a respite provider, it gives me the opportunity to meet and talk to children of all ages. I think it has also given my kids the opportunity to get a feel for the diversity in our community and understand some of the struggles other kids they go to school with are facing.”

“We have kids that we have had in our home that we will see in the community, at soccer games, community events, grocery stores, that come up to us and want to talk. I have one I see nearly every weekend during soccer season that makes sure to come over and say hi every time we see them. They tell us how much fun they have had at our house, and they look forward to coming back,” said a local respite provider.

The program launched in 2023, but in 2024 it expanded to include biological parents as well. Respite providers can now grant much-needed consistency to kids while in foster care, and then continue to build a relationship with them and care for them as they transition back to living with their biological family. The main goal of ODHS and Every Child is reunification and family preservation whenever possible.

er entails filling out an application, completing a pre-recorded 2-hour training, background check and fingerprinting, and a home walk through by an ODHS certifier. Certified respite providers can decide what age groups and genders will be the best fit for them to care for in their home, and they can share specific interests and skillsets that they can offer.

There are 109 children and young adults across Coos and Curry Counties currently in foster care. For these children and young adults, who spend an average of 15 months in the foster system, the experience can be disorienting and scary. Many going through crucial developmental periods, particularly older middle and high-school aged kids, need consistent support to navigate what is already a confusing period for most.

“We want to cast as wide a net as we can, to let community members know that this program exits, and encourage them to get involved and make a

positive impact in the life of a child or young adult. We are in need of resource parents and certified respite providers to care for children of all ages, and we especially have a need for community members to apply who have a heart to care for adolescents and teens (young adults), because there tends to be lack of support for those age groups,” said Ell.

There are many ways to support children and young adults impacted by foster care outside of being a resource parent or respite provider, though the need for both of those positions is still great. Businesses and community organizations can get involved by providing discounts or donated items for children and young adults experiencing foster care, and for resource families.

“There are big and small ways to get involved outside of being a respite provider. Community members can volunteer at a resource parent appreciation event or Foster Parents Night Out event,

for example, or help meet a tangible need such as clothing or bedding through Every Child’s My Neighbor program. There is also a need for more Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA’s) as well, to support kids in the courtroom and give them a voice,” said Ell.

Consider becoming a resource parent, respite provider or volunteer today and have a direct, positive impact in the life of a child or young adult in your community. ODHS and Every Child Coos and Every Child Curry are always looking for more volunteers and donations, so they can continue their mission of helping to uplift vulnerable children and families impacted by foster care. As they say, ‘It takes a village’.

“We’re very grateful for the community members

that have already stepped up to support the certified respite program. We feel like it’s a much more do-able entry point for the community. We know the foster care system can feel overwhelming and very heavy. This is an impactful way to take one simple step into it and make a meaningful difference in the life of a child,” concluded Ell.
