'Seashells and Cowbells' brings

fun to the Curry County Fair

The Curry County Fair has come and gone, but once again proved to be a celebration of local talent and community.

The fair, held at the Curry County Fairgrounds showcased hundreds of exhibits from local artists, food from local vendors, and lots of fun for all.

The fair's opening night was a roaring success, as the rodeo drew a full house. Attendees enjoyed events including junior bull riding and the crowd-favorite Mutton Bustin'.

Another highlight was the 4H auction, which broke previous records with the sale prices of livestock. The hard work and dedication of our 4H kids were a huge reason for the impressive numbers.

The Docia Sweet Hall was packed with local exhibits, and a record-breaking number of quilts this year. Food lovers were treated to vendors offering specialties and fair classics, ensuring that nostalgic fair feel. The fair also featured attractions like the "Dinos and

Dragons" show, where lifelike dinosaurs roamed the grounds.

The Canine Stars, who have appeared on "America’s Got Talent," was another impressive act.

Perhaps most impressively, the parade, a cherished tradition, was successfully coordinated despite doubts over whether it would be possible this year. According to Curry County Fairgrounds Manager Teri Hughes, it took community volunteers to make it happen.

“The Parade was saved by community volunteers, and a giant thank you to Jesse Flovin and Brittany Scott for stepping up and coordinating that,” stated Hughes.

The Port Orford Rotary ensured smooth and courteous parking, while Gold Beach Fire and other county employees stepped up to manage ticket booths.

Overall, this year’s Curry County Fair was a resounding success, reflecting the dedication and enthusiasm of our community.

New turf for Brookings Harbor

JERRY ULMER

OSAAtoday

For years, Brookings-Harbor's best-laid plans to install an artificial turf football field always seemed to hit a snag.

“Funding sources fell through,” athletic director Keith Wallin said. “Lot of different reasons. Nobody's fault, just logistically didn't work out.”

This week, though, those dreams are about to be realized. On Tuesday, workers will begin laying FieldTurf on the stadium field at Brookings-Harbor, giving the 3A Bruins the only artificial turf football surface within a two-hour drive on the South Coast.

“This is about the third go we've had at trying to do this,” Wallin said.

“We've got a lot of really special things planned.”

The football field is part of a nearly $2 million facilities upgrade. The school also is installing a new track, replacing the artificial turf infield on the softball field and building a multi-use practice field from the soil removed from the stadium field.

“It's a construction-filled summer around here,” Wallin said. Much of it was made possible by South Coast Lumber, which made contributions responsible for about two-thirds of the project. Tidewater Contractors contributed

STAFF REPORT

Country Media, Inc.

The impact of this year’s wildfire season continues to reverberate throughout the state as the number of acres burned reaches 1.2 million. At this time, the number of acres burned is four times the average when compared to the same point in past seasons. As many as 1,261 fires have burned across the state with more than 100 still active.

Five megafires, fires that exceed 100,000 acres, are still burning in Eastern Oregon: The Battle Mountain Complex, Lone Rock, Durkee, Cow Valley and Falls fires. These megafires are now between 19% and 99% contained. Residents in these communities have been deeply affected by the wildfires. As many as 18,000 residents were under a level 1, 2 or 3 evacuation level during the height of the response to date with more than 8,000 still under some type of evacuation warning.

excavation and paving. Many other local sub-contractors chipped in. And the school's booster club has helped with cost overruns.

“South Coast Lumber stepped up and said, 'We want to do something special,'” Wallin said.

“There was just a lot great community help for it. The guys that were working on it were all guys that graduated from Brookings. They've got ownership.

once the turf installation is completed in a few weeks. The school has opted to paint the track blue and gold.

“We're really trying not to incur much, if any, costs to the school district, especially with tight budget times.”

Construction on a new track will begin

“Just something to make it personal, a little signature,” Wallin said.

The full scale of the loss will not be clear for a few months at least. Initial reports show that dozens of people have been injured, and there was at least one wildfire-related death. Initial reports show fires have destroyed as many as 28 homes and 73 structures. Much of the damage has been to grazing land and livestock, heavily impacting the ranching community in eastern Oregon. More than 10,000 people are involved in the response including 261 fire crews, 483 engines and 31 helicopters. Local and statewide emergency response departments and agencies

The Importance of Social Security

In today's world, few things are as deeply woven into the fabric of our nation as Social Security. For over eight decades, this bedrock program has offered economic security and dignity to millions of retirees, people with disabilities, and surviving spouses and children. It is a sacred promise between the government and the American people who pay in and earn their Social Security over a lifetime of hard work.

A pillar of retirement security

At its core, Social Security is a vital pillar of retirement security. Over the past years, as traditional employer-paid pensions have declined and retirement savings have shrunk, Social Security still provides guaranteed income Americans can count on throughout their lifetime.

Today, 67 million people benefit from Social Security. Forty percent of older Americans rely on Social Security for more than 50 percent of their family income. Fourteen percent relies on Social Security for 90 percent or more of their family income.

Importance of Social Security

To demonstrate why Social Security is such a vital source of retire -

ment income, about half of the workforce has no employer-provided retirement plan. More than one in three working households age 21 to 64 has no individual savings set aside for retirement and 44% of people who are closer to retirement -- ages 55-64 -- have no retirement savings accounts. Even those households age 50 to 59 with retirement savings do not have enough; over 60 percent have less than $100,000.

Promoting economic stability

Social Security plays a pivotal role in promoting economic stability for individuals and communities by providing a steady stream of income to retirees, who spend it on the necessities of daily life, contributing $1.4 trillion a year to the US economy. Additionally, it reduces poverty among vulnerable populations and lessens the burden on other government programs.

The future of Social Security Social Security is paid for by dedicated payroll taxes and the interest those taxes have built up in the Security Trust Funds. Before 2021, Social Security collected more in taxes and interest than it paid out, so it built up a surplus to support the retirement of the “Baby Boomer” generation. Today that

surplus is being used to supplement incoming payroll tax income, but eventually the Trust Funds will face a shortfall in 2034 according to current estimates.

The shortfall is caused by a growing population of retirees and lower birth rates. When that happens, Social Security will still be able to pay 80% of benefits, but a cut of 20% -- an average of over $4,000 a year -would hurt both individuals and communities. However, if our leaders in Washington take action, America’s most reliable foundation of income security will keep delivering on its promise.

Wild Rivers Film Fest preview: four can’t miss movies

Crafted by Corey Payette, an interdisciplinary storyteller, writer, composer, producer and director in TV and film, this story follows a young Mohawk girl, Kateri, and her brother, Jean-Baptiste, as their lives are disrupted by the arrival of Les Filles du Roi in 1665 'New France'. And the unlikely relationship they forge with young fille Marie-Jean Lesperance, whose dream of a new life is more complicated than she could have imagined. Payette is known for his deeply moving, large-scale original musical creations that challenge the public's notion of what musicals can be.

“Spirit of the Wind” is a truelife story of George Attla, famous Alaskan dog sled driver. Set in the 1950s, this film explores the ways in which a disabled Athabaskan youth comes to terms with both his disability and the cultural

Another of the most anticipated features this year is "Plight," directed by MJ Alhabeeb Jr. This gripping thriller follows Valentina, a Ukrainian woman who arrives in the United States to care for her sister after a devastating hit-andrun accident. As the local authorities hit a dead end in their investigation, Valentina joins forces with Joe, her fiancé's determined father, to seek justice.

For those who didn't get a chance to attend the WRFF Preseason Event on May 27, "Art Thief" will be returning to the Wild Rivers screen. Directed by Arthur Egeli, this film takes a sweetly thrilling approach to a heist story, with Max Deacon and Jacqueline Emerson playing the charismatic duo, Kevin and Olympia. Their chemistry drives this modern-day Bonnie and Clyde tale, inspired by the infamous 1990 Boston art heist.

More information on the 2024 lineup of films can be found on the Wild River Film Festival website. Passes can be purchased online or at the WRFF Box Office at the Redwood Theater during the festival. https://www.wildriversfilmfestival.com/films.

The four movies will be previewing at the upcoming Wild Rivers Film Fest: "Les Filles Du Roi" "Spirit of the Wind," "Plight," and "Art Theif." The films will be playing from August 15 through August 18th.

not only will benefi t Brookings-Harbor, but it could play host to events for other schools on the South Coast, especially late in the season when grass fi elds turn muddy.

The closest artifi cial turf football fi elds are about 100 miles away at Marshfi eld, Hidden Valley and Grants Pass high schools.

Wallin said the school also is looking into playing host to summer events.

“We have some really big plans in the future to host some 7-v-7 soccer tournaments in the summertime, when we know the valley schools are going to want to come over to get out of the heat,” he said. “And we're also starting early-stage plans to host a major football camp. We're also fully prepared for valley schools to call us when

they're having to deal with smoke.”

The Brookings-Harbor stadium fi eld not only had a severe crown – about four feet – but it retained a lot of water due to the content of the soil. Heavily used by the community, it often became very soft. At certain times of the year, the surface would become rock hard.

Due to jumping pits and light towers inside the track, the playable area was too narrow for soccer matches, forcing the school's teams to play on the baseball outfi eld.

To prepare for the project, the school moved the light towers outside the track in early 2023.

This summer, the school moved the jumping pits to each end of the fi eld, between the end zones and the track.

That means the playable area fi nally is big enough to accommodate

soccer matches. School teams also will be able to practice on the new grass fi eld that is being constructed adjacent to the stadium fi eld.

“That was never a

usable space before,” Wallin said. The new fi elds will complement the school's 100x120-foot indoor artifi cial turf facility that was built 15 years ago.

New human resource building opens in Brookings

The Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS) was excited to open a new building in Brookings on August 5, 2024. This is the state’s biggest agency, helping one out of every three people in Oregon.

People will have one place to sign up for critical benefits like SNAP, Oregon Health Plan and childcare. They'll also be able to meet someone who can talk through options for an aging loved one or someone with an

“This new building will improve access to our services and make them safer and more accessible for everyone,” said Josh Harlukowicz, the local Chief Operations Officer at ODHS. “This new center is the result of listening to the community and finding solutions together.”

The new facility will have space for family visits, support for those impacted by domestic violence, interview rooms, and conference rooms for community groups. The building will started offering services on August 5, 2024.

lines who have been injured and families of those killed in the line of duty.

OEM and agency partners want to caution the public to beware of scams when donating, and only give to trusted organizations. Scammers often contact their possible victims by telephone, social media, email or in person so be suspicious of direct asks. Also, be cautious if the person asking for donations creates a sense of urgency and won’t let you think about it or donate later. If you want to donate money to support the wildfire recovery effort, it’s best to donate to the organization directly.

OEM has compiled library of additional recovery resources with information from multiple agencies to help residents during and after of a fire. This library includes but is not limited to:

Basic needs support:

List of shelters, food pantries, replace SNAP benefits, medical equipment replacement and vital document replacement
