Fishing Vessel Ablaze off Brookings
Three Rescued with Help of GoodSamaritan
BY NATE SCHWARTZ
Curry Coastal Pilot
An offshore blaze prompted a dramatic rescue on Tuesday evening, after a fishing vessel caught fire nearly 50 miles off Brookings. The Mariah K caught fire endangering Emanuel Silveira and two others.
According to Petty Officer Briana Carter with the U.S. Coast Guard 13th District, another local vessel, Eli’s Tide, reported the fire to the Columbia River Coast Guard Sector and was on hand helping rescue efforts. The Mariah’s passengers, who had gone over-board, were transferred to a 47-foot Motor Lifeboat out of the Chetco River Coast Guard Station.
One survivor needed a medevac from the Aircrew at Coast Guard Sector Humboldt Bay. The three fishermen have been transferred to UCSF Health Saint Francis Hospital, in San Francisco, as stated in a Facebook post by the Coast Guard.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, although according to a GoFundMe established for Silveira, the engine had exploded at some point, rendering the boat irreparable.
The campaign Silveira remains in the hospital where he is expected to stay for 3 months, as he begins treatment for burns that cover “60% percent of his body”, according to the GoFundMe. His first procedure was scheduled for August 15th. Silveira runs a fishing operation out of Woodley Island Marina in Eureka, California. Silveira and his wife, Mariah, have two young sons.
The good-samaritans on the
just happy that the three fellow fishermen are safe.

Little Free Library opening on Easy Manor Drive
BY NATE SCHWARTZ
Curry Coastal Pilot
Local volunteers announced that Brookings will be receiving its first official ‘Little Free Library’ registered through the city charter. With a ribbon cutting planned, and the library almost complete, lead volunteer Christine Zellmer’s plan has almost come to fruition. Little Free Libraries are community initiatives that may seem small because of their name but can have big impacts in their neighborhoods. Essentially a kiosk for a free book swap, the Little Free Library encourages neighbors to engage with literature, connect with their community, and share art and knowledge. With a simple take-one leave-
one (if you can) philosophy, these libraries also allow those less fortunate to still have a means to engage in reading. This can be crucial to families with kids of all ages. Studies show the importance of reading in early childhood education, and the Little Free Library will allow local kids easy access to a rotating selection of books.
“I don’t know what to say other than that opening this little free library has been a dream of mine ever since I first learned about them. I am so excited that it’s finally coming true, and I hope everyone else enjoys it as much as I will,” said Zellmer about the project.
The preparations are almost complete. The library itself has been handcrafted in a lovely shade of sea-side blue by
Matthew Bennett with wood provided by Brookings Glass. A poem titled ‘Don’t Judge a Book By its Cover’ has been inscribed inside, and the site has been leveled and graveled. Julie Rutherford and the folks at the Chetco Community Library are making sure there are plenty of books on opening. A grand opening is planned for Sunday, August 25th, from 12pm to 1pm, at the site of the library at 617 Easy Manor Drive in Brookings. Light refreshments will be served, and kids will get to color their own complimentary bookmarks. If you would like to support this community initiative, they are accepting small book donations at the previously mentioned location. Donations can be left on the porch.
Gold Beach Enhances Beach Accessibility with New Mobi-mats
BY NATE SCHWARTZ
Curry Coastal Pilot
Gold Beach made a significant leap towards improving beach accessibility this week, with the installation of new of Mobi-mats. This was a collaborative effort from local volunteers, the Oregon Coast Visitors Association (OCVA), and the Trailkeepers of Oregon.
Gold Beach is the first applicant to take advantage of the OCVA’s new accessibility grant program, and the first to see the mats in action. The installation
was completed by 6 volunteers from the Trailkeepers and Visitor Center, who spent just an hour and a half setting up the mats along the beach. The mats are able to stay out for extended periods as well. Mobi-mats are temporary pathways that can be laid out over uneven terrain, making natural landscapes like beaches more accessible for individuals with mobility challenges. The OCVA’s current focus is on expanding Mobi-mat installations
Opinion & Letters
Letters to the Editor Guest Column
August 19, 1988, President Reagan signed Proclamation 5847 declaring August 21st as National Senior Citizens Day. So. what’s happening in Curry County to support our Senior Citizens in 2024 and beyond?
Affordable housing for seniors: In May, Coos-Curry Housing Authority (CCHA) announced that in 2026 there will be twenty-six affordable housing units for seniors coming to Curry County.
Dementia Summit: Watch for dates and information soon. In an AARP article I learned there are four common forms of clinical dementia: Alzheimer’s Disease, Frontotemporal dementia, Vascular dementia, and Dementia with Lewy Body. The article gave inspiration to a Dementia Summit for providers with subject matter experts. Further researching, I found the Amen Clinic website’s information re Frontotemporal dementia—Gambling in Seniors: Is it Addiction or Dementia? A special thanks to Coos and Curry Older Adult Behavioral Health Initiative’s Lualhati Anderson who will be helping to find the right subject matter experts for this important summit!
Brain Injury Workshop: We’re still choosing a Spring date! So glad that Dave Kracke of the Center on Brain Injury Research and Training (CBIRT) will again grace us as a keynote speaker. The CBIRT.org website notes their TBI Team hosted 23 webinars with 1,835 individuals registering. We are lucky to have this second workshop! For our seniors, providers, and caregivers there will be information provided re how falls/multiple falls and TBI/accumulated TBI often result in cognitive changes, changes in emotional health, and increase the risk for dementia. And--what does prevention look like?
As always, a special thank you to our nonprofits serving us--seniors--and to the senior citizens who are the volunteer heart and soul of Curry County. Please stay connected to your senior family members, neighbors and especially our senior veterans.

The misplaced priorities of political fundraising
BY NATALIE WOOD Director of Catholic Charities of Oregon
In an era when millions struggle to make ends meet, the staggering sums raised for political campaigns stand as a stark reminder of our misaligned priorities. Recent election cycles have seen billions of dollars poured into candidate coffers, while poverty continues to grip communities across the nation.
Consider the numbers: In this year’s election, candidates will spend a projected $10 billion for ads alone. Meanwhile, more than 37 million Americans live below the poverty line, facing daily challenges to secure food, housing and healthcare.
This disparity raises a crucial question: What if even a fraction of these campaign funds were redirected to addressing pressing social needs?
The potential impact is profound:
Housing: No family should be sleeping on the streets – but they are. More than a million Americans experience homelessness on any given night. Campaign billions could put roofs over their heads.
Education: No child should be denied a quality education because of their zip code – but they are. Millions of students attend underfunded schools. Political war chests could form thousands of minds.
Healthcare: No one should die from treatable illnesses – but they do. Tens of thousands of Americans perish yearly because of a lack of health cov-
erage. Campaign fortunes could save countless lives.
Jobs: No hardworking individual should live in poverty – but they do. More than 37 million Americans live below the poverty line. Election funds could create pathways to dignified, living-wage employment.
Infrastructure: No community should lack basic services in 21st century America – but they do. Millions live without reliable internet, safe roads, or clean water. Political millions could rebuild forgotten towns and neighborhoods.
Food Security: No child should go to bed hungry – but they do. More than 9 million children in the U.S. face food insecurity. The price of a few campaign ads could fill their plates for months.
These facts highlight the stark contrast between campaign spending and pressing social needs, emphasizing the human cost of our current priorities.
The absence of widespread outrage over this misallocation of resources is puzzling. Perhaps it’s due to the normalization of exorbitant campaign spending, or a sense of powerlessness in the face of entrenched political systems.
However, there are signs of growing discontent. Grassroots movements advocating for campaign finance reform and increased focus on social issues are gaining traction. Some politicians have made a point of rejecting large donations from political action committees and running on smaller-dollar

contributions.
As citizens, we must demand better. We should challenge candidates to justify their fundraising in light of pressing social needs. We should support reforms that limit campaign spending and amplify the voice of ordinary voters over wealthy donors.
Ultimately, a republic that allows vast sums to be spent on political theater while neglecting the basic needs of its citizens is a republic in crisis. It’s time to realign our priorities and invest in the wellbeing of all members of society, not just attempt to influence those seeking office. If you believe in policy for fighting poverty, give some money to candidates who support that, but also give directly to organizations that do the work.
The funds spent on campaigns could transform lives and communities. The real question is: Do we have the collective will to make it happen?

Bite the Rogue brings the flavor the Buffington Park
By NATE SCHWARTZ

Gold Beach’s popular
‘Bite the Rogue’ event is returning this year thanks to the folks at Wild Rivers Coast Food Trail, and the Rotary Club of Gold Beach. This food focused event brings local eateries together for a delicious day on September 7th, in Buffington Park, Gold Beach.
Focused on local vendors and locally sourced foods, this event is a culinary conference for Curry County and beyond. Live music will be provided alongside brews from Gold Beach’s Arch Rock Brewery in the Beer Garden.
Tickets are available online at the link below.
Two tastings and a beverage are included with every ticket, allowing you to experience whichever of the vendors you see fit.
The Wild Rivers Coast Food Trail highlights standout local eateries yearround. With the mission of connecting both locals and visitors to locally crafted products and supporting local businesses and producers, the organization has almost 40 local businesses partners.
“The Wild Rivers Coast Food Trail is a collective effort that connects locals & visitors to the bounty of the Wild Rivers Coast. It’s an opportunity to taste the place of each unique community in our region,” states the WRC Food Trail mission statement.
The WRC Food Trail emphasizes not just local businesses, but those that source their ingredients locally (or within 150 miles of the business), with requisite requirements for how much of the menu or offerings are actually produced in the area.

Oregon sees job growth, continued employment challenges
Oregon’s seasonally adjusted nonfarm payroll employment rose by 8,500 jobs in July, following a revised decline of 700 jobs in June, according to the Oregon Employment Department.
Gains, losses July’s gains were largest in professional and business services (+2,300 jobs); health care and social assistance (+2,000); government (+1,800); and construction (+1,400).
Declines in July were largest in leisure and hospitality (-700 jobs) and retail trade (-500).
Professional and business services added 2,300 jobs in July, following a drop of 1,700 in June. The July gain was led by the addition of 2,000 jobs in the component industry administrative and waste services. Despite the one-month increase, professional and business services cut 2,900 jobs, or -1.1%, in the past 12 months, with each of its three component industries also declining by close to 1% since July 2023.
Health care and social assistance expanded rapidly, adding 2,000 jobs in July and 16,300 jobs over the past 12 months. Social assistance grew
by 7,500 jobs, or 10.3%, in 12 months.
Meanwhile, the health-care component industries each added more than 2,000 jobs since July 2023: nursing and residential care facilities (+3,500 jobs, or 6.6%); ambulatory health care services (+3,700 jobs, or 3.7%); and hospitals (+2,300 jobs, or 3.9%).
Despite gains in health care and a few other industries, several industries cut jobs over the past year.
Four major industries declined by at least 1,000 jobs since July 2023: retail trade (-6,600 jobs, or -3.2%); financial activities (-1,300 jobs, or -1.3%); professional and

NOTICE OF PETITION TO ADMINISTER ESTATE
OF:
Donna Charles Case Number: PB247054
To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate, or both, of Donna Charles
A Petition for Probate has been filed by: Kimble Darlington, in the Superior Court of California, County of: Del Norte.
The petition for probate requests that: Kimble Darlington and Sidney Darlington, Jr. be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. The petition requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This Authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority.
A hearing on the petition will be held in this court as follows:
Date: September 20, 2024
Time: 10:00am Dept.: 2
Address of the Court: 450 H Street, Crescent City, CA 95531
If you object to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. If you are a creditor or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. You may examine the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request
for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is available from the court clerk.

Randall Wade Layton
Randall Wade Layton passed into Heaven on June 28, 2024, in Eugene, Oregon.
He was born in Portland, Oregon, on September 04, 1960, to Joni and Malcolm “Sonny” Richter, who soon moved Randy and his older sister, Denise, to the central California coast. The son of a professional musician, he developed a deep connection to music at a very early age and soon after became a big brother to Scott.
When Randy was 10, his mother remarried Charles Bernard Layton, who would raise him and his siblings after relocating to Brookings, Oregon, where they welcomed another son, Charles “Chip” Layton Jr., in 1972.
During his formative years in Brookings, Randy played several sports and added an appreciation for the written word to his passion for music. In addition to reading anything he could get his hands on, he wrote for and edited the Brookings Harbor High School newspaper and separately garnered awards for his essays and short stories.
Shortly after graduating high school, Randy moved to Eugene and embarked on a career in the music industry. He began as a promoter and distributor, helping musicians gain recognition, and later founded his own record company, Alternative Records, where he would work tirelessly to bring attention to little-known artists whose work he believed in. In later years, he was regarded as an elder statesman in Contemporary Christian Music, serving as a mentor and trusted advisor to many in the genre. His legacy was cemented through the many people he impacted and the music he helped bring to life, including that of his father, Sonny, whose work went largely unnoticed in his lifetime.
