Art on the Coast raises $7,000 for local foster kids

Organizers of one of the South Coast’s favorite art fests made a generous donation to local foster kids through the Court Appointed Special Advocates of Oregon (CASA), thanks to proceeds and donations from this year’s Art on the Coast festival in Harbor.

The event, always scheduled for the first weekend in August, brings together local artists, musicians, and vendors for a

weekend of sun, fun, and handmade artisan goods made in Southern Oregon.

“I moved here three years ago,” said Art on the Coast Organizer Laura Brown, “and found out that the art festival was being cancelled. It was during Covid, and so they weren’t going to do it anymore in August. I thought, ‘Well that can’t happen!’, so I started it back up.”

This year’s event was able to take place thanks to the involvement of the festival’s many local sponsors: CTR, Brookings

Furniture, Pithitude, The Emblem Club, Ocean Suites Hotel, RH Pub and Grill, Travel Curry Coast, Black Trumpet Bistro. McKay’s and Boardwalk Mail.

“It is a lot of fun! Great people, great artists, great promoters, and great sponsors!” said Brown.

CASA is an organization focused on solving Oregon’s foster care crisis.

Providing training and resources to those who want to help local youth, CASA and their volunteers act as advocates for the best interests of abused and neglected children in court. Through the help of donations and local samaritans, CASA has been able to help at risk youth through

Brookings-Harbor High to host dedication of new sports complex

A community dedication for the new SOCOMI Sports Complex at BrookingsHarbor High School will take place on Oct. 4. A full day of festivities are planned before the Bruins take on Coquille under the Friday night lights. Elmer Bankus Stadium’s grass field was converted into a full synthetic turf field over the summer, along with a complete resurfacing of the running track. Upgrades were also made to the field event areas for long jump, high jump, pole vault, shotput, and javelin.

Decked out in Bruin blue and gold, the new SOCOMI Sports Complex was named through generous donations from South Coast Lumber

Mill Beach health advisory issued Sept. 19

High bacteria levels prompt OHA recommendation to avoid water contact

PORTLAND, Ore.—Oregon Health Authority (OHA) is issuing a public health advisory today for unsafe levels of fecal

bacteria in ocean waters at Mill Beach in Curry County. People should avoid direct contact with the water in this area until the advisory is lifted. Unsafe levels of fecal bacteria can cause diarrhea, stomach cramps, skin rashes, upper respiratory infections, and other illnesses. Children, elderly and those with a compromised immune system should use

extra caution as they are more vulnerable to illness from waterborne bacteria.

Visitors should avoid wading in nearby creeks, pools of water on the beach, or in discolored water, and stay clear of water runoff flowing into the ocean. Levels of fecal bacteria tend to be higher in these types of water sources.

Unsafe levels of fecal bacteria

in ocean waters can come from both shore and inland sources including:

• Stormwater runoff.

• Sewer overflows.

• Failing septic systems.

• Animal waste from livestock, pets and wildlife.

The Small Business Development Center, with an office at SWOCC in Brookings, is offering their second Small Business Management Workshop Series beginning Oct. 8. The nine-month program will be given once a month through June 2025. The workshops cover the essential building blocks for businesses that are starting out, as well as offering an opportunity for existing businesses to grow and improve.

Available the second Tuesday of each month, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m., experts in their field will be offering information and their guidance in a hands-on workshop. Each attendee will then meet with the local Curry County Business Advisor to bring the information they have learned to life.

Even if there is no advisory in effect, avoid swimming in the ocean within 48 hours after a rainstorm.

Ocean waters will be re-tested after an advisory is issued. Once bacteria levels are at a safe level, OHA will notify the public that the advisory is lifted.

While this advisory is in effect at Mill Beach, state officials continue to encourage other recreational activities (flying kites, picnicking, playing on the beach, walking, etc.) on this beach because they pose no health risk even during an advisory.

For the most recent information on advisories, visit the Oregon Beach Monitoring Program website at https://www.oregon. gov/oha/ph/healthyenvironments/ recreation/beachwaterquality/ pages/index.aspx or call 971-6730482, or 877-290-6767 (toll-free).

The idea behind the program is to help business owners “know what they don’t know” and help advance their development, bringing business knowledge which will affect the local economy.

“We are looking for business owners we can assist to get the most out of the hard work that they put into their businesses,” said Workshop Facilitator Gayle Goldstone.

The first group of participants described the workshops are beneficial.

“SBDC’s Small Business Management course has been a life changer for me and my husband as we start the journey of our new business,” said Ashley Mcgehee, owner of Legends

Opinion & Letters

Letter to the Editor Guest Column

On Sept. 1, 2024, at approximately 8:30 a.m., my brother and I had to make the dreaded phone call. My father, Denny Wayne Haddad, who lives with me, was missing. He has Alzheimer’s.

I want to thank the Crescent City Sheriff’s Department and their special search and rescue unit. Their response time was very impressive. Luckily, he was found within two and half hours. He is doing fine.

This is to thank all who responded, and to those who live on Skycrest Drive. Everyone pulled together. I live in one of the best neighborhoods. I can’t say enough. He is our dad and we love him very much. All of you are really appreciated.

Our US Southern Border - Illegal Immigration is Destroying America and our Future

Oregon’s Quality of Life, Economic Stability and Public safety are collapsing BY COURT BOICE

District 1, House of Representatives Coos, Curry and Douglas Counties

Folks we are losing our culture. I and everyone I know supports legal immigration and always has. Legal entry is the lifeblood of our country but we must adhere to the rule of law and critical order! We need responsible, vibrant, and vetted immigration that will embrace our history

and beliefs. Intel tells us very bad people are coming into our country. After the 2nd assassination attempt on former U.S. President Trump, the risks are increasing!

The Biden-Harris machine has wrought palpable devastation to our southern “boundary”. Chinese Nationalists, Drug Cartels, Radical Islamist and vicious gangs and the drugs they easily transport.

Recently I had the opportunity to visit our Arizona border and observed first-hand the ongoing chaos and shear evil that continues to invade our country. What I saw was shocking! Much of that destruction has brought havoc to Oregon as no state and no community is isolated from the consequences of the last nearly 4 years of horribly failed policies that have dramatic negative impacts. We must stand up and repel this invasion.

What we see today is a travesty in illegal immigration. Perhaps as many as 23 million illegal aliens from all across the Third World have been enabled by Kamala Harris to enter the United States of America. Ten’s of Thousands find their way to our pristine region with nothing in their pockets but problems. The drain on our benevolence is profound. Most now come to America not to embrace opportunity but many come to commit horrific crimes: murder, rape, sex trafficking, All have exploded and an almost bottomless surge of newcomers with their hands out for assistance. With this enabled, even encouraged invasion, we can say good by to our special American memories of yesteryear. Our Economy, our Law Enforcement,

our Medical and Educational Systems are all under tremendous pressure. There is a hope. You’re encouraged to vote for Conservative Constitutional focused Candidates at all government levels - City Counsels all the way to the U.S. President. They have essentially been out of power for decades.

I’m asking you to consider our 1776 plan and Make Oregon Safe Again. Donate and volunteer – Please challenge your family, friends and neighbors! Everyone contribute anywhere from $17.76 to $1,776 – make between 17 and 176 Phone calls. Knock on 17 to 176 doors. Do whatever you can do. If we succeed in doing our part and make that solid commitment; we will win on November 5th. Please join me in early voting. I ask you to Pray, Vote and then Pray again. God Bless America!

22 different programs in Oregon, and almost 1,000 nationwide.

“(CASA is) constantly in need of funding, and it’s for foster kids, so it’s just a great organization. They are poorly funded in this area of the state,” said Brown. According to a 2019

report from Our Children Oregon Curry County children experienced abuse and neglect at a rate of 21.1 cases per 1000 children. For those already in foster care, the placement stability rate is near the state average at 61.1%.

Meaning that almost half of children in foster care are experiencing a lack of permanence, having to move homes and families

multiple times. To these children, who may be experiencing neglect or have parents unwilling to fight for their best interests, having an advocate looking out for you through those confusing times is invaluable.

For the Pilot Gold Beach, Ore. –Following successful capital campaign fundraising, Wally’s House has announced it will soon break ground on its planned new Children’s Wellness Center, in Gold Beach. A non-profit organization, Wally’s House is Curry’s County’s only child advocacy center providing assessments and support services to children and youth who are suspected victims of abuse.

Wally’s House invites community members to attend a groundbreaking ceremony celebrating the beginning of renovation of the new Children’s Wellness Center on Thursday, September 26th, from 2 to 3 p.m. The event will take place at the site of the future center, 94166 8th Street, Gold Beach.

Wally’s House launched its Pathway to Hope capital campaign in February 2023. In just over 18 months, the campaign has raised $1.4 of the $1.5 million needed to renovate an existing building into a new center devoted to expanding support for child victims of abuse. The new Children’s Wellness Center will be located on a lot adjacent to the existing Wally’s House facility.

The current Wally’s House is just 1,800 square feet, too small to meet the needs of Curry County children and youth requiring child abuse assessments. The new Children’s Wellness Center, combined with the existing Wally’s House facility, will support a general capacity increase for Wally’s House services from 60 to 90 children per year. Additionally, the new center will house urgently needed on-site pediatric mental health support for child victims of abuse.

“Wally’s House is grateful to have the support of foundations, organizations and individuals that share our concern for Curry County children,” said Executive Director Jackie Antunes. Regional health care organizations have strongly supported the campaign, with lead

support from AllCare, and generous support from Advanced Health and Curry Health Network.

“Thank you to every one of our donors for helping us reach this milestone. This new center would not be possible without generous community support,” adds Antunes. “When complete, the Children’s Wellness Center will be a place of healing for children who have experienced severe trauma.”

Construction of the new Children’s Wellness Center will be completed by local contractors and vendors, led by General Contractor Kephart Customs Construction.

Arcade, LLC. “The tools and knowledge we have gained in this course have helped prepare us for the amazing adventure of being an entrepreneur.”

“I have really been enjoying the SBM workshops,” said Kristen Smith, co-owner of Arch Rock Brewing Company with James Smith. “Although my business has been running for 11 years now, we are at a point where we are considering expansion and are at a crossroads. I’m so glad I signed up for the classes, even though

some of the content was familiar, I still found it valuable. It’s a great group of people, everyone is very supportive, helpful, and kind. The best part about it is the monthly one-onone advising sessions where you get customized advice. I can’t recommend it enough.”

“I’m currently attending the SBM program at the Curry Campus. It’s truly special as it brings people from the Curry and Coos campuses together via technology so we are one big class miles apart,” said Alisa Green, owner of The Green Team! LLC. “I’m so thankful for the class. I’m increasing my knowledge of how

Wally’s House to break ground on children’s wellness center

to run a small business, and I’ve already seen improvements. In addition to the class, each business owner attends sessions with their business advisor. Since starting my work with Gayle, I’ve increased my awareness of how to run my business more efficiently and highlighted areas that need improvement. This feedback has resulted in me developing a timesaving business strategy that has already affected my company’s growth.” The cost for the entire program is $300. The

firsthand.

Attendees can take the field for themselves, as well as sign a “Thank You” banner addressed to contributing community members.

There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony, along with a performance from the Brookings-Harbor High School marching band. Students, staff, and community leaders will be speaking, and displays

will show the evolution of Brookings-Harbor High with historic photos and insight into this summer’s construction. The night will be capped off by the varsity football game against Coquille at 7 p.m. The Bruins will look to kick off their league campaign by avenging last year’s loss against the Red Devils. As of Sept. 17, the Coquille Red Devils are 0-2, and struggled against teams from North Valley and Cottage Grove. The Bruins are currently 1-1 in non-league play, after bouncing back from a rough loss to the Phoenix Pirates to beat Pleasant Hill at home 22-20. At half-time during the game against Coquille, there will be a special presentation to further commemorate the new complex. Regular admission prices will still apply to those who attend the game.

If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (844) 477-7869, or visit this internet website www. STOXPOSTING.com, using the file number assigned to this case 24-31206 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. Obituaries

Rickey Ray Tidwell

8/24/1957 – 9/2/2024

Rickey Ray, aka “Slick-Rick” Tidwell passed away in the early morning hours of September 2nd, 2024. He was at his home in the presence of loved ones. Rick was a hard worker, a dedicated volunteer, and a loving and caring father and husband. Though cancer robbed him of a full life, we don’t dwell on what he wasn’t able to accomplish, but instead we focus on all the wonderful things he did with the time that he had. He was defined by his dedication to his wife, sons, grandchildren, and friends; his love of hunting, fishing, his love of annual candy making, gambling; and his dedication to serving others.

Rick was born in Fort Worth Texas on August 24th, 1957. He grew up under the guidance of his father, Burl, and in the shadow of his older brother, Burl Jr. After completion of high school Rick enlisted in the Navy and served proudly for four years of duty. His primary role was abord a refueling ship and he would often reminisce with his family and friends about locations around the world where he was privileged to visit during his time in the service.

After his time in the Navy Rick moved

Rose and Hugh Peterson’s youngest daughter passed away unexpectedly on July 27th, 2024, while camping with her family at the age of 28. She loved all things Halloween, cooking and baking, travelling, shopping, reading and crafting, as well as spending time with her nieces, Morrigan and Kailee, and her nephew, Lukas. She is survived by both of her parents, Rose and Hugh Peterson; her sister, April Shanks; and her brother, Chris Peterson, all of which reside in Brookings. A Celebration of Life was held at The Event Center in Brookings on Sept 14th.

to Brookings, OR where he dove head first into the working world. Rick’s commitment to a hard day’s work was one of the fundamentals that defined him. He was a business owner, a construction worker, an upholsterer, and the manager of the South Coast Lumber truck shop for over 19 years. He spent months working tirelessly at the family’s Chetco River cabin, helping to build it from foundation to completion. When he became unable to work full time due to a disability, he was a frequent fixture behind the bar at his son’s business, The 101 Bar and Grill.

Rick’s work ethic went beyond just a paycheck, he served in many volunteer capacities during his lifetime as well. He started early in high school, working within the Texas education system as an assistant to students with special needs.

Rick was honored to be in the service of the Brookings Police Department where he was a Reserve Officer for 10 years.

Most proudly, he served with dedication for 22 years as a voluntary board member of the W J Ward Memorial Cemetery in Brookings. During his tenure with the cemetery, his heartfelt compassion was felt by many grieving families that he

assisted.

Rick was an animal lover and almost never left the house without his dog at his side. He spent his free time hunting or fishing with friends, on family camping trips, riding ATVs, or playing the slot machines at the local casino.

Rick was best known for his unwavering devotion to his family and his love for his wife was unequivocal. He died only one day after celebrating 40 years of marriage to his love, Michelle Horton-Tidwell, whom he leaves behind. He also leaves many cousins, nieces and nephews, his brother Burl, grandsons Charlie and Christian, granddaughter Itzel, sons Austin and Devin, daughterin-law Anabel, and he was preceded by his youngest son Blain, who also left this world too soon.

Rick’s legacy will live on through all of us. From those who worked along side him, those who were fortunate enough to cross paths casually with him, those who rubbed shoulders with him at the casino, and those who he served a drink or two at the bar. We thank you Rick, for teaching us the importance of hard work, for imparting so many life lessons, for sharing

your dry sense of humor and sarcasm, and for giving to others before taking for yourself. We miss you and love you.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, September 29th at 11:00 a.m. at the Brookings Elks Lodge. In lieu of flowers the family requests a donation be made in Rick’s memory to the W.J. Ward Memorial Cemetery.

Terry Robb, Acoustic Blues Master

Live @ St. Timothy’s on October

Some musicians win awards. Then there are the very few who have awards named after them. Terry Robb – hailed as a blues guitar virtuoso and one of the finest acoustic guitarists on the international scene – is one of those musicians.

The Vancouver-born, Portland-based bluesman took home the Muddy Award for Best Acoustic Guitar so many times that the Cascade Blues Association finally broke down and attached his name to the trophy permanently. Recognition for his artistry doesn’t stop there. The Oregon Music Hall of Famer has been praised by Rolling Stone, Acoustic Guitar, Down Beat, Guitar Player, Vintage Guitar, Living Blues and Oprah’s O Magazine, extolling his talents as a finger-picker, singer, songwriter, arranger and producer. He’s toured the country with Buddy Guy, Steve Miller, Robin Trower, and John Fahey, appeared on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, dazzled the crowd at Portland Trail Blazers games, and

18 One of the finest acoustic guitarists on the international scene.” – Living Blues

collaborated with the Oregon Symphony. During his multi-decade run in the spotlight – one in which he’s released fifteen acclaimed albums – he’s shown himself to be a master of nearly every blues style and technique imaginable.

And there’s no better representation of his mastery than Confessin’ My Dues. The 13-track collection of Robb’s original tunes draws on influences as varied as country blues to Coltrane, ragtime to Hendrix, and Americana to American Primitivism. Released in 2019 to worldwide acclaim, the album soared to the Billboard Blues Album Chart, Living Blues Radio Report, Roots Music Report Blues Album Chart and the UK’s International Blues Broadcasters Album Chart,

earning him another Muddy Award for Northwest Recording of the Year and a Blues Music Award nomination from The Blues Foundation.

Robb is an acclaimed fingerstyle guitarist, singer,

composer, arranger and record producer. His work is featured in Hollywood films, documentaries and biographies, such as Game of Thrones, The Horse Whisperer, and Dance of Death: The Life of John

Fahey, American Guitarist. He is associated with the American Primitive Guitar genre through his collaborations with Fahey, and is regarded as a virtuoso of acoustic blues guitar. In his multi-decade

career, Robb has released 15 acclaimed albums as a solo artist, and performed at festivals and concert halls across the United States, Canada and Europe. For more information, visit www.terryrobb.com.

Fat Irish Kitchen & Pub to be featured on America’s Best Restaurants

HARBOR,

Local

America’s

Restaurants,

national media and marketing company focusing on bringing attention to local, independently-owned restaurants, will bring its ABR Roadshow to the restaurant on October 3rd. Popular dishes will be highlighted, along with an extensive on-camera interview with owners Jay and Mary Trost about the restaurant’s special place in the community. The episode will be aired extensively on social media channels at a later date.

Fat Irish Kitchen & Pub opened in 2015, and the Trosts took over in 2018. The Trosts already had careers working with at-risk youth, but were interested in “doing their own thing” and going into a business, and it was Mary’s mother that made the suggestion.

“You know, you’d be my mom’s favorite son-in-law if you bought an Irish pub,” Mary told Jay one day. “And it’s for sale.”

Fat Irish Kitchen & Pub brings the Emerald Isle to small-town Oregon, and offers a convivial atmosphere, highly dedicated staff, and unique food offerings to the public. Even though the Trosts did not work in the restaurant industry, they knew how to manage, serve, and have what they call the “wow” factor throughout the experience.

“The one thing that we’re not strangers to is how to run a business or how to treat people,” Jay says. “Essentially, that’s what you’re in the business of, right? You’re in the business of providing. You’re providing an atmosphere. You’re providing a service.”

Fat Irish Kitchen & Pub offers what they call a “fairly traditional” menu with popular items such as Reubens, fish & chips, and award-winning New England style clam chowder. They have corned beef tacos on Taco Tuesday and ‘Fatty Hour’ on Wednesdays and Thursdays where $18 will get you two drinks and an appetizer. Additionally, they have weekend brunch and “one of the best Bloody Marys in the state,” says Jay. Fat Irish Kitchen & Pub is also very involved in the community, and they have menu items where some of the proceeds go directly back to community causes. Additionally, Trost serves the public as Curry County commissioner.

America’s Best Restaurants will be filming on location on Thursday

3rd from 9 am to noon PST. The restaurant’s finished episode premiere date will be announced on their Facebook page and will be featured on America’s Best Restaurants’ website at www. americasbestrestaurants. com. Restaurants featured on the

Attorney General Candidate makes stop in Brookings

A candidate for attorney general made a stop in Brookings. Will Lathrop made the 35th of his 36 county visits on Sept. 17, appearing at the Chetco Community Public Library alongside District 1 State Rep. Court Boice. Lathrop answered questions from the public and laid out his resume for politically engaged residents.

A sixth generation Oregonian, Lathrop did his undergraduate studies at the University of Puget Sound and Law School at Willamette University School of Law. He served as a deputy district attorney in Marion and Yamhill counties, where he worked in the Special Victims Unit, chaired the Sex Offender Protocol Board, and served on the Oregon DA Association’s legislative committee.

Following his time with the State, Lathrop began working with International Justice Mission, an international human rights organization. He began in Uganda, prosecuting land raids in the wake of the Ugandan Civil War and was soon promoted at IJM to lead their anti-trafficking operation in West Africa.

“I am a public servant, an experienced prosecutor,

and a victims advocate. Not a politician,” said Lathrop. “With two decades of law enforcement experience, I have dedicated my entire career to public service by protecting women and children from violence and abuse. I represent a wave of new leadership that is committed to solving problems and holding people accountable.”

He added, “I am confident that together, we can fix this.”

Lathrop puts a lot of emphasis on his time protecting women and children from violence and abuse. In fact, protecting children from exploitation is one of his campaign’s three core tenants. The attorney general is Oregon’s Chief Law Enforcement Officer, leading the charge on prosecuting organized crime in Oregon, but it is also the state’s Chief Child Protection Officer tasked with protecting the most vulnerable among us.

Questions about child protection were asked during the community visit. Other concerns included accountability for government and law enforcement, and reducing departmental corruption, another of the campaign’s main focuses.

A big point of concern was funding gaps in rural counties. Both Curry County and Coos County

had law enforcement levies shut down in the voting booth in the past year, leading to reduced capacity of local jails and layoffs. The Curry County Sheriff’s Department cut 19 positions after Measure 8-114, a $2.23/$1000 of assessed property value levy, failed to garner support.

Brookings Yard of the Month winners for September

The City of Brookings announced another two Yard of the Month winners for September. In a continued effort to encourage community beautification, the City looks to reward both residents and businesses for the hard work they do to keep Brookings a beautiful place to live.

Winners receive a commemorative certificate, a yard-sign to display for the month, along with a $50 credit on their next water bill from the City.

A commercial and residential winner are chosen each month. Here are winners for September’s Yard of the Month award:

US Bank – 325 5th Street

Brookings’ new Building Inspector, Terry Konrady, got the opportunity to hit the town and scout out a winner for this month’s commercial yard. This month were heading to the corner of 5th and Railroad.

The local branch of US Bank here in Brookings has some wonderful landscaping touches. Carefully sculpted hedges and shrubs surround the building, giving it a manicured, high-class look. Amber Lei Harkins, the branch manager for this location, was on hand to receive the certificate from

Konrady and City Manager Tim Rundel.

Laurey & Mark Billings –830 Crestwood Place

The Billings’ front yard on Crestwood is certainly a standout, hence why it was nominated for the award by its neighbors. The Billings have installed an island in the yard complete with a water feature. Potted and bedded flowers provide a pop of color, and string lights provide some seasonal glow in the evening.

City Staff was impressed to learn from Mark Billings that the yard’s irrigation system was self-installed, providing a proprietary and efficient water source for the lawn. A feat of landscaping and agricultural engineering, join us in congratulating the Billings on their contribution to Brookings’ beautification.

If you would like to make a nomination for next month’s award anyone can reach out to Lauri Zeimer or Brooklyn Osterhage with the City of Brookings.

Oregon Coast and visiting with local community members in Brookings,” said Lathrop. “Many of their concerns are consistent with what I hear in every part of the state. People are concerned about fundamental public safety and the overwhelming influx of drugs coming into our state.”

According to his campaign website, “Will

plans to rebuild the Criminal Justice Division, and develop collaborative strategies with state, local, and federal law enforcement authorities to combat organized crime and hold drug traffickers accountable.”
