Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation hosts 17th annual Dee-ni’ Day
A day to honor Tolowa culture and celebrate California Indian Day.
Smith River, CA. – The Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation is excited to announce their 17th annual Dee-ni’ Day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, 2024, at the Howonquet Hall Community Center, across from Lucky 7 Casino. The free event is open to the public and the entire community to enjoy. The event will feature
demonstrations, a tribal citizen art show, men’s card games, shell dice tournament and a regalia showcase. There will also be 60-plus art and food vendors, children and adult activities such as disc golf, archery, bull roping, a bounce house, and a horseshoe tournament. Traditional food samples will include sand bread and clam chowder.
A highlight of the Nation’s annual Dee-ni’ Day are the stick games, starting at 11 a.m., with athletes of all ages battling for bragging rights and cash prizes.
The games, held on the beach, is a strenuous sport for men and women that combines the strength and agility of wrestling and rugby with the quick action of field hockey. Game play can get rough, with players tackling or wrestling one another to the ground.
If you go: Visitors are encouraged to park in the overflow parking area at the Howonquet Cemetery and Lucky 7 Casino. Parking at the Howonquet Hall Community
Center, basketball court and UIHS is reserved for elders. When walking across Highway 101 to and from Lucky 7 Casino to the event please use the crosswalk and be cautious of fast-moving vehicles. A shuttle will be available. A portion of North Indian Rd. at the Hall to the Howonquet Cemetery will be closed for the safety of all attending the event.

The South Coast’s film lovers rejoiced as the second annual Wild Rivers Film Fest hit the screens of the Redwood Theater and Chetco Playhouse this month. From genre fun, to compelling dramas, and revealing documentaries, the fest had a little something for everyone to enjoy this year. “It was just beautiful,” said President of the Film Fest Board Sue Wright, “and I loved the energy of this film crowd.” That energy was generated thanks to the diverse line-up of films and a true festival atmosphere for industry professionals and creatives to
engage in. Red carpet ceremonies bookended the event on Thursday and Sunday, with an industry lunch and plenty of mingling and

Brookings Building Inspection team gets new leader
BY NATE SCHWARTZ Curry Coastal Pilot
The City of Brookings announced a shake-up in the City’s Building Inspection department. Long-time building inspector Dennis Tippetts is moving into a hybrid role, working as both a part-time building inspector and with park maintenance.
To cover that full-time role, the City has brough in a coastal expert with a wealth of knowledge. Terry Konrady of Coos Bay brings 12 years of experience as an inspector, with his last position as the Code Inspector for the Coos Bay Public Works Department.
Konrady has also previously worked as a building inspector for Lane County and the City of Tillamook. He has experience running his own contracting company, allowing him to understand both sides of the building inspection coin. Konrady has stated he believes in working positively with the community’s builders
“As a Building Inspector and public servant, I believe in a contractor friendly approach and am looking
forward to working with the community,” said Konrady.
Konrady has expressed excitement over the move, with so much time spent on Oregon’s coast, the California native stated that Brookings has always been a community he has appreciated.
“I have always been attracted to Brookings because it is a beautiful place to live with many
hiking trails and beaches to explore. Growing up in Redondo Beach I developed a love for surfing and am anxious to surf in the area,” said Konrady. The Pilot would like to join the City of Brookings in welcoming the new building inspector. If you see him out on the waves or on the trails, be sure to give him a hearty Brookings welcome.

Don’t be fooled! Lincoln County
Sheriff’s Office issue fraud call alert
BY JEREMY C. RUARK Country Media, Inc.
Law enforcement agencies all over Oregon have issued fraud call alerts over the past several months.
The latest comes from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) reporting that it’s received information from the public regarding multiple scam calls.
“Residents in on the Central Oregon Coast are receiving calls from subjects identifying themselves as active members of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office,” the LCSO alert states. “The scammers are requesting money for a COVID small business loan.”
The LCSO is urging anyone who may receive calls from people identifying themselves as a police officer or sheriff’s deputy requesting money or anything of value, not to provide any financial information or resources.
“Note the number, the name of the caller, and report the call to your local police agency,” the LCSO alert states. “The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office does not solicit donations or money over the phone
or through the mail.”
The Lincoln County fraud calls are part of a statewide pattern over the past year.
Widespread fraud In July, The Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) warned consumers against a phishing scam where hackers are contacting customers and claiming to be from the DMV.
“Scammers impersonate the DMV to trick you into giving them personal information or money,” the DMV states in a release. “If you receive an unsolicited phone call, text or email claiming to be from the DMV with an urgent matter, like your driver’s license or car registration is about to expire or you are owed money due to overpayment, ignore or delete the message or hang up. Do not click on any verification links.”
In June, the FBI Portland Division issued an alert saying it had seen an increase in reports of scammers falsely representing themselves as FBI agents, or a representative of another government agency, and sending couriers to pick up
cash or gold payments.
The FBI states in a release that federal agencies do not call or email individuals threatening arrest or demanding money.
Also in June, pet owners in Lane County were being targeting by scammers representing themselves as Lane County Animal Services (LCAS).
The scammers were
contacting pet owners who have shared information about a lost pet online or via neighborhood posters, according to Lane County officials.
Wild Rivers Coast Brookings
“The scammers contact the pet owners and tells them that their pet has been found but is injured and requires emergency veterinary care,” according to the LCAS officials.
“Pet owners are told they must either provide bank account and routing numbers or make a payment via CashApp or other app before their pet can be treated.”
In February, the Lane County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) issued an alert saying residents were being targeted by scammers identifying themselves over the phone as employees of the LCSO.
“Scammers have in the past also used text and email. The scammers claim there are warrants, missed jury duty, or unsettled legal issues,” the LCSO alert stated. “The scammers then ask for payment or personal information, often to avoid arrest. In some instances, the scammers appear to call from official phone numbers or provide fraudulent callback numbers with officialsounding voicemail inboxes.
Impact
According to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), 14,190 people reported being victims of government impersonation scams in 2023, with losses totaling more than $394 million dollars. In the Portland
Division, which includes all of Oregon, financial losses exceeded $1.7 million dollars in 2023. The scammers typically target older adults, according to the IC3. In 2023, almost half the complainants reported to be over 60 (40%), and experienced 58% of the losses (almost $770 million) nationally. Complainants over the age of 60 lost more to these scams than all other age groups combined, and reportedly remortgaged/ foreclosed homes, emptied retirement accounts, and borrowed from family and friends to cover losses in these scams.
Some incidents have resulted in suicide because of shame or loss of sustainable income, the FBI alert states.
Lane County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Tim Wallace said the phone scammers use high pressure tactics.
“They sell it very well,” he said. “They know how to string people along. We’ve had people show up in tears after they went to the bank and pulled out all their savings from the bank to pay the warrant. For us, the real frustration is that it makes people less trusting when we do contact them by phone. Also, they are victimizing people in our community, especially the elderly and people on fixed incomes.”
The Oregon Department of Justice encourages people to report any potential frauds and scams to the Oregon Consumer Protection Hotline at 1-877-877-9392 or online at oregonconsumer.gov.

Southwestern Foundation Congratulates 2024-25 Curry County Scholarship Recipients
Coos Bay, OR – The Southwestern Oregon Community College Foundation is proud to congratulate our 2024-25 Curry County scholarship recipients. Thanks to generous donors, the organization awarded 23 scholarships totaling $23,000 for students from Curry County attending Southwestern for the upcoming academic year.
“Students who receive scholarships tell us that it helps them get started on a goal they thought they couldn’t achieve,” said Karen Pringle Cunningham, SWOCC Foundation Board of Trustees member. “It boosts self-confidence and relieves a financial burden for them and their families. Seeing a thank you letter from a student you helped is a rewarding experience.”
Guided by a board of community volunteers, the Southwestern Foundation organized as a nonprofit organization in 1962, the year after the college started. Since then, thousands of students have attended the college and received Foundation scholarships. These awards help students by breaking down financial barriers and inspiring students to better their lives and futures.
If you are interested in donating to scholarships or volunteering with the Southwestern Foundation visit www.socc.edu/give or call 541-888-7209 for additional information.
2024-25 Southwestern Oregon Community College Foundation Curry County Scholarship Recipients:
Plum. The latter was on hand for Sunday’s screening and accompanied Alhabeeb in a Q&A following the screening where they discussed the location scouting, accent work, and other fascinating filmmaking insights.
There were foreign films on offer including the emotional, speculative sci-fi feature Hakoniwa, which made the trip across the Pacific from Japan. Horror fans were treated to the retro romp of Deer Camp 86’, a summer camp slasher with some creative kills and an important message at its heart. While the more experimental Hercules Recycled 2.0 had the audience in stitches by piecing together old Hercules films for a ‘mashup movie’.
A personal favorite of the fest was Ralph Liddle’s Spirit of the Wind the wind-swept true story of famous dogsled driver George Attla. Told through gorgeous natural cinematography, this film from 1979 won Best Picture at Sundance 79’ and multiple plaudits at the Cannes Film Festival of the same year.
Unfortunately, the film has never received an official release for physical or streaming. This was the first time the film had been shown since that initial run of festivals. After receiving a restoration, the film was shown on Thursday of the festival with the Liddles in attendance, which was an enthralling and emotional experience.
“I couldn’t believe it. It looks better than it ever has,” said Liddle on the restoration.
Sunday’s festivities also included the awards
ceremony MC’d by organizer Dan Springen, who brought his knowledge as the Executive Director of the Orlando Film Festival here to Brookings. Filmmakers were recognized for their films in a variety of categories. Plight took home Best Picture, with Art Thief’s Arthur Egeli taking home Best Director. There were multiple local award winners as well. Calyton Sackett and Vincent DiFrancesco, two local students, each took home awards for their documentary shorts. As well as Brookings’ new city manager Tim Rundel, who won the Social Awareness Award for his documentary short B’CATS or The Bryan County Alternative Transportation Society. A full list of the Fest’s award winners is below.

Donald Grant Cline
Donald Grant Cline, 83, twenty-year former resident of Brookings, passed away on August 1, 2024, at his home in Olympia, Washington.
Many have labeled Don, a true Renaissance man: a knowledgeable deep thinker, an adventuresome explorer, a tenacious problem-solver, and an eclectic creator.
Don’s life began on a sheep ranch outside of Bozeman, Montana where his love of horses was born. His passion for horseback riding and exploring surroundings expanded as the family moved to Baker, Oregon and Walla Walla, Washington before the family settled in Yakima, Washington. Don referred to these early “horsey” years as the “fun times.” During his school years in Yakima, Don’s activities expanded to baseball, music, and academics.
It was his love of learning that led him to complete three academic degrees: Bachelor of Science in Psychology, Master of Arts in Education, and Associate Degree in Information Sciences. However, Don’s hunger for knowledge did not end at the college gate. He was a voracious reader, diving deeply into subject after subject with an occasional detour into a murder mystery series.
When Don completed his bachelor’s degree, he served two years in the Peace Corps in Bombay, India. This experience hatched his lifelong thirst to learn about diverse cultures, religions, music traditions, and the arts. Don’s travels took him to four continents. Even in the last months of his life, he and his wife, MaryBeth Cline, also a former Brookings resident, explored Singapore, Malaysia, and Costa Rica. His ability to grasp native tongues coupled with his fluency in Hindi, Russian, Spanish, and German enriched his explorations.
Don’s work history reflected his need for variety. Having worked with children in India, Don sought employment in education and taught elementary students for a short time in Brookings. Next, he decided to repurpose his problem-solving skills and became a general contractor, building and renovating a variety of structures in Brookings. For the rest of his life, Don applied his building skills to projects of his and others: turning a throw-away cabin into a lovely cottage, exchanging home renovation work with friends in Brookings, volunteering as a set carpenter for a theatre in Olympia. While in Brookings, Don also engaged in commercial beekeeping, one of his favorite pursuits.
After leaving Brookings, Don became a Software Engineer, working for General Dynamics and Coastal Environmental
Systems, specializing in writing technical manuals.
In 2010, inspired by a program in Ashland, Oregon, Don and MaryBeth Cline started a food collection project in Olympia with a few people collecting food in brown paper bags. Today, residents put nonperishable foods in special green bags for pick up on the second Saturday every other month. The Thurston County Food Project neighborhood coordinators collect the filled bags for transfer to the food bank. Over 55,000 pounds of food are donated annually. Their project motto is: You want to help, We Make It Easy.
Don Cline was predeceased by his sister, Bonnie Austin and nephew, Kevin Cline. He is survived by his wife, MaryBeth Cline, his siblings, Patti Higgins, and Dick Cline (Anne Cline). In addition, Don is survived his stepchildren, Amy Cresswell (Phil Cresswell) and Andrew Goodwin (Nicki Goodwin), his nieces, Kendra Cline, Tasha McMaster, and Tiffany Austin and his nephews, Chris Higgins and Toby Austin, and his grandchildren, Grace Cresswell, Willis Cresswell, Kaiya Goodwin, Kalissa Goodwin, and Drew Goodwin.
We will always carry memories of Don in our hearts.
Don Cline’s Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 PM, Sunday, October 20, 2024, at the Lacey Community Center. (6729 Pacific Avenue SE, Lacey, Washington)
Don requested that any monetary donations be given to The Thurston County Food Project.

Brookings certifies November candidates
BY NATE SCHWARTZ
The City of Brookings certified three candidates for this year’s city government elections to take place on the November ballot. After instability on the council, Brookings is now seeing some consistency, and hopefully this group will be able to continue moving forward productively.
The reinstatement of former City Manager Janell Howard launched the council into a long period of debate which culminated in a recall election November 7th, 2023, which ousted two city councilors and the sitting mayor. Those positions were filled through assignment by the remaining councilors, who reviewed applications for the open seats. That leads us to the upcoming election.
The mayoral position will be uncontested, with the sitting mayor Issac Hodges deciding to stay in the position after being appointed by the council in the winter of 2023, filling the vacancy left by the recalled Ron Hedenskog. The mayoral position is a two-year term which will expire January 12th, 2026.
The two recalled council positions were filled by Clayton Malmberg and Pheobe Pereda, and both are choosing to run and retain those positions. They will both be running unopposed for seats that carry a fouryear term, ending in January of 2028.
Councilors Andy Martin and Kristi Fulton will remain in their positions until the election cycle of 2026. With Fulton also appointed in the wake of the recall election,
Council Martin is the only current member of the council elected to his position via a ballot vote. Despite its unconventional origins, this group has managed to move forward. The recent appointment of new City Manager Tim Rundel ends the long search for a permanent fixture in that position, which saw Public Safety director Kelby McCrae trading offices for an extended period. Presuming there won’t be any big surprises come election time, this could mark the first time in almost two years that the council has a majority of elected officials, with a proper support staff installed to help them. This could spell a productive period for the City of Brookings. Let’s hope the Council and City can deliver on that promise.
