The spirit of Christmas was not dampened with a little rain at the Cottage Grove Community Christmas Kickoff. This young man enjoyed a moment with Santa at the Christmas Tree lighting ceremony at Trailhead Park.
The day-long activities entertained young and old at the W.O.E. Fairgrounds. Santa heard the wishes of children and the live nativity in the barn was a highlight of the event.
‘Tis the Season
Community Christmas Kickoff soggy and successful Santa and Mrs. Claus. City staff transformed the council chamber into Santa’s workshop and provided the refreshments. Across the street from City Hall, local churches served hot soup, bread, coffee and hot chocolate to warm up participants on the cold and soggy night as the Middle and High School Choirs provided a soundtrack of spirited songs. Other holiday activities included the morning Jingle Bell Run & Kids Dash staged at Cottage Grove High School. Across
town Cascade Home Center hosted Olaf the Snowman and his elf assistant to help children write a letter to Santa. The Crafty Mercantile offered holiday card-making for kids. The Festival of Trees along Main Street featured theme-decorated trees sponsored by businesses and community organizations. Rodney Harwood joins the Cottage Grove Sentinel as the new editor, coming from Ellensburg, Wash., where he was the city reporter for the Daily Record with the Adams Publishing Group. Harwood spent the past two months contributing remotely to Country Media publications from Crescent City, Calif., to Lincoln City. Two of his projects – Human Trafficking and Indian Role Models – ran companywide with Country Media newspapers throughout Oregon and California. He was hired to come onboard full-time and assumed the editor’s duties at the Sentinel on Nov. 27 where he will answer to Joe Warren, the director of operations and the Southern Group Publisher in charge of operations in Florence and Cottage Grove down to Crescent City, Calif. Harwood is a 43-year news veteran with a background in daily journalism. Most recently, he served as the city reporter for the Ellensburg Daily Record and also covered the $30-million Central Washington arts
