City manager finalists introduce themselves Well over 100 people filed into the Cottage Grove Armory Thursday night to meet the five finalists for the city manager position. The two-hour Candidate Reception was an opportunity for residents, stakeholders and community members to learn more about the candidates and offer input. The city council met in executive session on Friday following an extensive interview process involving three separate panels with interviews of each finalist coming in from as far away as Florida and Alaska. The council will

make its final determination but won’t be ready to make the announcement until after the first of the year following contract negations, Mayor Candace Solesbee said. GMP Consultants of Snoqualmie, Wash., conducted an extensive national search to identify a group of five finalists with the leadership skills and experience to guide the city with its future vision. The candidates’ credentials showcase a great understanding of the complexities and challenges associated with municipal management.

Senior consultant Bob Larson was the point man in GMP Consultants’ national search, saying the search consisted of narrowing the field from 24 applicants to the five finalists that met with the Cottage Grove community. The process started on Sept. 11. “We put together a candidate profile after talking with the city council and members of the community, then marketed it across the country. We have candidates from Florida, North Carolina and Alaska,” Larson said. “The adversity is good, and it

was a good piece of work he said. “My approach was to come in and help take the situation at hand and manage it as well as possible. But mostly get it to the point where they can make the best decision possible,” said Clyne said. “I’m happy with the effort. Flower Basket & Gift Boutique owner Carol Reeves’ idea to host a food drive last holiday season was so successful, the local business decided to lend a helping hand again this year. “Last year we raised quite a sum of cash donations and over 700 pounds of food and non-perishable products. So, we decided to do it again through Christmas Eve,” Reeves said. The Flower Basket & Gift Boutique is taking contributions at the store in what it hopes will be an annual event for Cottage Grove Community Sharing. “We’ve set up a barrel in our store and we’re asking customers to bring in three non-perishable food items. In return, they get 15% off their total of purchase,” store employee Mary Beard said. “We’re trying to beat the goal of 700 pounds this year. “We know that we have very giving customers, so we’re doing this to help out the community. We work with Cottage Grove Community Sharing and they distribute it.” Community Sharing has been helping in the community for more than 35 years. It was founded when a local lumber mill closed, forcing dozens of families into economic crisis. Today, according to the website, more than 4,500 individuals rely on Community Sharing to help meet their basic needs. The food pantry, a member of the Oregon Food Bank system, provides eligible families with 3-5 days’ worth of food each month, including meat, produce, non- perishable items, breads, and dairy products as available.
