Eating healthy for a good cause!

Formed nearly a couple of years ago, the Shanghaied Roller Dolls is a north Oregon coast flat-track roller derby league that spans Clatsop County and of late has attracted recruits or “Fresh Meat” from as far south as Manzanita and Nehalem. While it’s not the rough and tumble version of women’s roller derby on banked tracks you may remember as a kid watching TV, there’s still plenty of action and tumbles in the updated version of the sport that has made its way to the Oregon coast.

It was a full house at the Big Wave Café this past Monday evening as owners Brian and Carol Williams hosted a lowcholesterol, low-sodium, low-fat meal in conjunction with American Heart Month, with proceeds from advance ticket sales benefitting the Rinehart Clinic. In addition to making their restaurant and staff available to the Rinehart Clinic dinner, the Williams also donated the entire cost of the dinner.

The Citizen

For Patricia Millard, the new vicar at St. Catherine Episcopal Church in Manzanita, it’s all about freedom – freedom to think your own thoughts and to ask your own questions, and in looking for the “right fit,” she believes she has found it on the north Oregon coast. Millard comes to St. Catherine from Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Boring, Oregon where she served five years. She replaces Ann Fontaine, interim vicar for two years who followed Paul Barthelemy upon his retirement. Already, having

land area,” she says. “This is a very unique and interesting place. It’s interesting the impact nature has and how it interacts with the spirituality

of people who live here.” Millard was born and raised in Mexico and moved to “the states” shortly after completing high school to

attend Trinity University in San Antonia where she earned a degree in chemistry. She has dual citizenship and, being bi-lingual, she has served as a professional

Nehalem man killed in weekend accident near Hwy. 101 A fatal crash on Hwy 53 near its intersection with Hwy 101 early Saturday morning, Feb. 2, took the life of Zanoni Arizona Hartford, 36, from Nehalem. At approximately 7:40 a.m. on Saturday, Manzanita police officer Mike Sims was notified of a vehicle in the brush off Hwy 53 just north of the Hwy 101 junction. The officer went to the scene and confirmed a fatal crash occurred at the location. An Oregon State Police trooper from the Tillamook Area Command office responded to investigate. Preliminary information indicates the crash occurred at an unknown time during the early morning hours. A 1987 Honda Civic two-door driven by

Hartford was southbound on Highway 53 and, as it entered a left curve, it traveled off the highway and rolled several times. The Honda came to rest about 30 feet off the roadway in blackberry bushes and the driver was ejected. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to OSP spokesman Gregg Hastings. Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation. Manzanita Police Department, Nehalem Bay Rural Fire Department, and ODOT assisted OSP at the scene. Investigators were at the scene of a single-car accident early Saturday morning on Hwy 53 that took the life of a Nehalem man. Photo by Hal McMahon.
