Annual Veterans Day event in McCormick Park WILL LOHRE Country Media, Inc.

To honor service members past and present, a ceremony will take place at Veterans Memorial Plaza in McCormick Park in St. Helens on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. Gene Hester is the Judge Advocate for Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1440, and he said the Veterans Day event is an annual ceremony that has been going on for “a very long time.” There’s usually a “pretty good” turnout for the event, according to Hester. In years past, they have had about 175 people come to the Veterans Day ceremony. Last year, despite a lack of advertising and hesitations to gather post-COVID, Hester said the event drew over 60 people.

Sergeant Jayson Hester and Sergeant 1st Class Kitt Dominguez will begin the event by lowering and folding the American Flag. Following the lowering of the flag, Chounlie Hester will sing the National Anthem, and Roger Trudeau will say a prayer.

There may be a new industry player coming to St. Helens, as American Hyperion Solar, LLC has expressed interest in purchasing or leasing the city-owned property at 1300 Kaster Road, St. Helens. At a special meeting on Oct. 20, the city signed a letter of interest from American Hyperion Solar, LLC. The signed letter of interest gives the company 90 days to conduct due diligence on the property, according to St. Helens Communications Officer Crystal King. “The City of St. Helens is excited by the interest American Hyperion Solar, LLC has expressed in locating to St. Helens and the

Hester asked that people arrive at the park at 10:50 for the event so they can be part of the entire ceremony, which will begin at exactly 11 a.m. Hester said the event will last about 45 minutes. The event will feature covered seating in case the weather gets rainy. Veterans Memorial Plaza has seen investment from the City of St. Helens, the VFW, and Andrew Niemi of Lower Columbia Engineering in recent years. “Three years ago, I drew up the

plans for a new Veterans Memorial Park, and I took them to Andrew Neimi, who owns Lower Columbia Engineering, and Jenny Dimsho at the city,” Hester said. “The cannon was there, and a couple of plaques that had the names of all the people in World War II and World War I and Korea from Columbia County that had been killed in war. And we built a whole new wall.” The new memorial wall includes the names of fallen soldiers from Columbia County who passed away

in “Eastern conflicts,” as well as the Korean War, World War I, World War II, and the Vietnam War. The new wall holds particular significance for Hester, who is a veteran of the Vietnam War. Hester’s son Josh died in the Gulf War, and his name is on the newly expanded wall. Hester will be the master of ceremonies for the Veterans Day event, and a new unfinished feature will be unveiled during the ceremony. Six podiums that honor the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard,

Merchant Marine, and Space Force will be introduced during the event. Veterans Day event

p.m. and is expected to continue until around 9 p.m., unlike last year which was conducted online, lasting a week. “Open from 5 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. [for] registration and then we’ll serve dinner at 6 p.m. and the live auction is going to begin around 6:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.,” said the senior center’s Executive Director, Melissa Watson. According to Watson, this is the center’s most significant fundraiser of the year, with all proceeds go-

ing towards their Home Delivered Meals program. The senior center prepares and delivers meals to numerous seniors in the community, including some who are unable to leave their homes. “We do one meal a day and we do have some clients on Fridays [who] do get some additional frozen meals to get them through the weekends,” said Watson. “For many of our clients, we are their sole source for nutrition.”

At the ‘Serve It Up For Seniors’ auction, benefiting the St. Helens Senior Centers Home Delivered Meals program, one lucky person will place the winning bid on the amazing hot air balloon ride for two over the Willamette Valley Vineyard.

Watson said that with the increase in food prices, they are adding more people to their roster daily. This fundraiser is essential to helping them keep the vital program running. While the center does have a few paid staff members, most of the people working in the kitchen and delivering meals are done by volunteers. The event will feature two tables full of items for their silent auction, as well as 12 to 14 larger

items which can be bid on during their live auction towards the end of the night. The items available for bidding will have varying price points, ranging from lower-cost to higher-cost options. Watson said they received donations for the event from various places, and attendees can look forward to exciting items like a hot air balloon trip for two, a Willamette

Stans Refrigeration celebrates 50 years WILL LOHRE Country Media, Inc.

A lot has changed in St. Helens throughout the last 50 years, but one constant has been Stan’s Refrigeration & Air Conditioning, Inc., which just celebrated a half-century in business. Stanley Rohloff has owned and operated Stan’s Refrigeration since 1973. He even built the building that houses the headquarters for the operation at 58481 Old Portland Road in about 1979. There are four employees at the business. Something that he’s enjoyed over the years is the people and providing great service. “I enjoy people. You know, treat them right. Then they keep coming back or tell their friends. We never advertised too much,” Rohloff said. “I built this, got new stuff, hired more

people. It just kind of grew. Treated people good and delivered things to them. We have free delivery; we don’t charge. You gotta be friendly with them, treat them right.” Rohloff started the business when he was 38 when he began, and in January, he will turn 89. Despite his age, Rohloff still comes in and works in the shop every day. Before owning his own business, Rohloff worked 18 years for Thermo King in Minnesota and specialized in refrigerator repair. Rohloff’s sister lived in St. Helens, and he started his business when he moved to St. Helens. “My sister and brother-in-law were here, and they kind of spread the word a little bit. I was busy from day one,” Rohloff said. “We kept growing and growing and hiring people.”
