Cannon Beach residents Rock and Lila Wickham are valuable members of the community who volunteer their time with several local organizations.
Lila is an RN and coordinator of the Cannon Beach Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) which she established in 2015. The thirty-one member MRC consists of doctors, registered nurses, social workers, a pharmacist and a veterinarian. In 2021, MRC volunteers contributed more than 1,400 hours administering vaccines, along with testing and contact tracing, at an estimated value of more than $100,000 for the Clatsop County Health Department. MRC volunteers routinely join with the Cannon Beach Disaster Animal Response Team (DART) to provide support and firstaid at community events, such as the annual Sand Castle Contest.
Lila has five years of experience working as an RN in a hospital intensive care unit (ICU), eighteen years directing an eight-county health department in Idaho, four years at the Oregon Health Authority overseeing county health departments, and fifteen years as the Environmental Health Director for Multnomah County overseeing health inspections and emergency management while applying for and obtaining multiple grants.
After Lila and Rock moved to Cannon Beach full-time in 2014, Lila realized that creating an MRC would significantly improve emergency preparedness for our small community, which will likely be isolated in the aftermath of a natural disaster. Since 2015, Lila has successfully obtained nearly $130,000 in grants to purchase fifteen public service radios, two repeaters along with generators, medical and pediatric supplies, pet supplies, four large shelter tents, three hand washing stations, three showers, and other emergency supplies.
Lila and Rock Wickham
Rock is an active member of the Disaster Animal Response Team (DART) and “like a rock” can often be seen helping Lila with multiple MRC projects. Rock and Lila volunteer at the Cannon Beach Community Food Pantry; while Rock shops for supplies every week and actively participates in the distribution of food every Wednesday. Rock is also a member of the Cannon Beach American Legion, after serving three years in the Army from 1967 to 1970 in Texas, Missouri, Kansas and Okinawa. Rock is a strong, reliable and supportive member of the Cannon Beach community.
Lila is on the board of the Cannon Beach Ar ts Associa tion; which sponsors an annual summer art camp for children ages 4-17.
Lila and Rock have four grown children and a beloved dog named Mojo. Rock and Lila are as busy as ever in “retirement” and contribute significantly to making Cannon Beach a better place. Thank you Rock and Lila for all that you do in making a difference for the community of Cannon Beach.

In 2016, Jeff Cherry, the grandson of Pat Patterson, found an 11 foot Western Red Cedar log in a nearby creek located near Sandlake Road. Jeff pulled the log out of the creek with the intention of carving a totem pole for his grandfather Pat. Jeff thought it would be appropriate since he had Northwest Coastal Native American heritage in his family. He carved the totem pole with his chainsaw.
Story and pictures provided by
Larry StephensAfter the totem pole was carved, it was exposed to the elements for some time. Eventually, it was taken to Bay City for possible installation in Garibaldi. When that didn’t happen, it was taken to Sandlake Grocery in October 2020 for possible installation. Once again, it didn’t find a home.
Pat then asked if he could find a good place where it would be out of the weather and could be restored so that it would stand as a tribute to the Northwest Coastal Tribes.
I spoke with Denny Pastega, owner of Blue Heron French Cheese Company, also a friend of Pat, to see if he had an idea regarding a safe place for the totem pole so restoration could begin. Denny suggested that we could use one of
his retired Pepsi shipping containers. What a great idea.
On June 8, 2022, Denny and I loaded the totem pole in his pickup and delivered it to Blue Heron and placed it in one of his Pepsi shipping containers so that we could begin the restoration process in earnest. The container provided power, lights and heat. Soon the challenging work of restoration began with sanding, shaping and removing dry rot, then wood filler and preservatives were applied.
Word got out that a totem pole was being restored at Blue Heron. As luck would have it, two men from Rockaway Beach, Gill Geesy and Greg Gasser, who were wood carvers and interested in Northwest Native American art, began assisting with the project. They pitched in to help with sanding, wood preservation and painting and Greg carved a salmon for the bear to hold.
Several students from local schools came to view the totem pole and learn about the history of Northwest Native American Coastal Tribes.
Lion President Jim Huffman of the newly chartered Tillamook Lions Club wants to give our artist Larry Stephens credit for his work finishing the iconic
Chinook Totem Pole. He has been carefully working on it, and it will soon be erected at Blue Heron French Cheese Company to stand tall and honor our local and visiting Native
Americans. I had the pleasure of walking with the Grande Ronde Tribal Council and our County Commissioners back in 2012 when the Grande Ronde Tribe came and walked on the Kilchis
Point trail. The last living Tillamook Chief, Steve Bob, of Willamina, walked with me. He was also the Grande Ronde Artist who
Continued from Page 6
created the artistic metal work for their Veterans Memorial Center. In our local Tillamook County Museum, we have some incredible collections and exhibits honoring the local Tillamook Tribe who lived here before us.
More importantly as Club President and as club members we all are thankful for the donation from Pat Patterson (and family). Our own honored centenarian in the Tillamook Lions Club has been like a spark plug to us all as he continues to share his enthusiasm about Lionism. The totem pole will be a key part of our club logo.
When our club was officially chartered in June 2023, the surrounding Lions Clubs came to the Blue Heron with us to enjoy a dinner and to celebrate the launching of our brand new Lions Club. There was a preview of the totem pole by all the surrounding clubs. We have let the office of the Grande Ronde Tribe know about it and also notified members of the Siletz Tribes that we intend to honor the history of Native Americans who have lived and traveled through Tillamook County. After all, the name of our town is
actually the name of the local tribe who lived here before us. We also are excited about the
history of trains and logging as we will be involved as a club with a museum that hopefully
will become an exciting new addition to Tillamook County. We as a club owe a big “thank you” to Larry Stephens our local club Artist for the hard work he has put in to make the totem pole become truly a work of art.

As we age, isolation and loneliness increasingly become concerns for the well-being of older adults.
Spouses, friends and family members may pass away, and deterioration in health can make it more difficult to get out.
It’s a major concern because a significant factor in one’s mental health is the strength of their relationships. For over 80 years, Harvard University has been collecting data and conducting a study on the topic, and according to their findings, “people with strong connections to family, friends and their communities are happier, physically healthier, and live longer than people who are less well connected”.
So what to do when it becomes harder to build, and maintain, those bonds?
That’s where senior living can help. Finding a community with like-minded people, and where the staff is dedicated to hosting social events and forging those relationships among residents, can provide
someone with the network they need to remain happy and fulfilled at every stage of life.
Quite often people equate senior living with a loss of independence, however, building relationships with friends and neighbors can bring a sense of fulfillment that may be missing when someone lives alone and struggles to get out.
Here at Prestige Senior Living Five Rivers, you never know what each day may bring – our residents enjoy manicures, yoga and karaoke!
Our life enrichment team is always coming up with interesting new events for our residents. We encourage you to visit our community and take part yourself!

Items accepted for donations include clothing, food, and small household goods.

Revolution art of the 1970s. Since the wagon was painted it has been used for transporting not only donations, but items belonging to the Tillamook Pathfinders
Camporee in Montana. Larry’s interest in visual arts began in 1960 when he worked at Meier & Frank’s first branch store in Salem as a visual merchandiser. From there he continued the same line of work at Rhodes in Portland while attending Portland Art Museum School in the evenings. Larry’s career took him to the San Francisco Bay Area, then to Seattle. Eventually he and his family landed in
Tillamook County. After retirement he developed a passion for painting, leading to a line of 24 classic Woodie car illustrations that were sold as reproductions, greeting cards, coin purses, mouse pads, coffee mugs and coasters. He went on to commission work and in recent years enjoys working on projects like Pat’s Totem Pole which is scheduled to open to the public later this year.

From 2024 to 2026, the Columbia River Maritime Museum will undertake multiple, coordinated modernization and expansion projects that collectively create a richer, more interactive, and accessible experience for our visitors, both indoors and outdoors.
The Mariners Hall project begins with a dramatic remodeling of 11,000 square feet of existing galleries in our legacy building, adding both new and updated exhibits. Most prominent among these are two fascinating exhibits devoted to the maritime culture of coastal Indigenous people.
The project centerpiece is a new, 24,671 square foot exhibition and education hall that will dramatically expand CRMM’s programming capacities with many new, interactive exhibits, centered around two dozen boats of varying sizes; hundreds of artifacts; and a Coast Guard rescue helicopter.
Mariners Hall also includes a purpose-
built classroom to better serve our highly impactful education programs, and a dedicated STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) space filled with interactive exhibits designed to spark interest in STEAM careers.
Hall will connect to the legacy building via a covered walkway. Thoughtfully planned landscaping, wayfinding and orienting will create an integrated campus environment utilizing outdoor spaces and interpretation to
enhance the visitor experience. This project will transform CRMM from an important regional museum to a world class museum in rural Clatsop County, Oregon. CRMM has raised $24.2M of the $30M needed. We will break ground in October and open in late summer 2026. CRMM owns the project site.
We are using a collaborative planning and design process that teams the architect (Opsis Architecture - Portland), exhibit designer (Storyline – Seattle), general contractor (Rickenbach Construction – Astoria) and museum staff to ensure that we are not just erecting a building, but creating an engaging, interactive new visitor experience. This holistic planning and design process will give us the best possible value and impact. Visit the Campus Transformation page on our website, https://www.crmm.org/ campus-transformation.html, for more information and updates.
