Coyote Creek Watershed 319 Project Update

Coyote Creek Watershed is a headwaters west of Rhame, ND and flows to the Little Missouri River. This is a conservation project, deigned to assist producers with conservation practices that will improve soil health, riparian health and reduce pollutants entering the Little Missouri River. In the project’s second year, producers have been installing conservation practices including water developments, fencing, and, cover crops. And participating in educational events. Discussion: A long term cropping systems trial has been ongoing at the Carrington Research Extension Center since 1987 to compare crop rotations, tillage and fertility treatments. The fertility treatments include an annual supply of 40 and 80 lbs of commercial N/acre and manure at 40 lbs of N/acre. The tillage treatments include no-till, minimum till and conventional till. Since the inception of the trials, a lot of data has been gathered and some trends are starting to materialize. Using data from 1999 through 2006, the behavior of the manure treated crops vs. those fertilized with commercial fertilizer is very interesting. Over that eight year period, the yield of non-leguminous crops including barley, corn, sunflower and hard red spring wheat grown under the manure treatment were at least equal to and in some instances, out-yielded the commercial N treatments. This fact is not too surprising until you realize that the manure applied at a rate of 40 lbs of N/acre behaved similar to or better than the 80 lbs/acre commercial N treatment. In only one time period (1999-2002) and for one crop (barley) yields obtained from the manure treatments were less than the 80 lbs of commercial N/acre treatments. What is even more interesting is the impact manure had on soil chemical properties over the same time period. One result that may help explain why the crop yields from the manure plots was competitive with a higher rate of commercial N is that soil organic matter levels in the manure treated plots were very much significantly higher than levels in commercially fertilized plots. When you throw tillage into the mix, the soil organic matter levels are also very much significantly higher for no-till and manure than any of the other treatments. The soil nitrate levels at all depths sampled were significantly less for the manure plots vs. the 90 or 45 lb/acre commercial N treatments showing a more efficient use of N by the crops fertilized with manure. Soil pH for the manure plots was also significantly higher than the commercially fertilized plots. Conclusions: Manure can be successfully substituted for commercial fertilizer andlong term manure use has a positive impact on soil chemical properties.

Sage-Grouse are the largest grouse in North America with a small portion of their current and historic habitat in Bowman, Slope and Golden Valley Counties in southwest North Dakota. In January 2005, the US Fish & Wildlife Service was petitioned to list the Greater Sage Grouse on the Endangered Species List. At that time the US Fish & Wildlife issued a twelve-month “Not Warranted Finding”. In December 2007 the US District Court upheld the 2005 “Not Warranted Finding.” However, following an additional lawsuit in February 2010, the US Fish & Wildlife Service issued a “Warranted But Precluded” finding making the Greater-Sage Grouse a Candidate Species for listing on the Endangered Species list. The cited reasons for this finding were; Habitat Loss, fragmentation and degradation of habitats as well as lack of regulatory mechanisms to protect habitat. The US Fish & Wildlife Service will make their final listing decision in 2015. Therefore even though we did not petition to have the species listed, as land owners, operators and local citizens the “ball is in our court” to prove why the bird should not be placed on the Endangered Species list. We need to improve Sage-Grouse Habitat, promote and showMale Sage Grouse case good conservation, and help educate the decision makers on additional non-human threats such as West Nile virus. Federal Government Land Managers (BLM and US Forest Service) need to update their management plans to ensure they are managing their lands for multiple uses, including improving & maintaining habitat for the Sage Grouse. The BowmanSlope Soil Conservation District and Bowman County Commissioners are “Cooperating Agencies” with the BLM to provide local input in the process to update their Sage Grouse Management Plan. As Cooperating Agencies we have the opportunity to provide input to help ensure multiple uses on the land and to share information with the BLM on how different alternatives would affect local producers. The BLM Director, Jamie Connell, will be looking at all management alternatives and making a final decision on BLM land management in mid-2013. There will be a public comment period during this process. What is good for livestock is generally good for grouse. This is why NRCS is implementing a Sage Grouse Initiative (SGI) to provide producers with cost-share and technical assistance to install conservation practices that will improve sage grouse habitat while also improving the sustainability of working ranches. It is a working lands program. The goal of the initiative is to help keep the sage grouse from being listed. The great part about the initiative is that any producer who voluntarily participates in the program is offered regulatory Certainty. This means that if they worked with us and our partners to develop and implement a conservation plan that specifically addressed the threats to sage grouse, even if the bird is listed, they would not have to change their operations further. The bottom line is…….. Be Proactive, Not Reactive! Having an Engaged Species Listing in our area could change our daily lives and agriculture operations dramatically. Being the ones “on the ground” we have firsthand knowledge & theories as to what is happening to the Sage Grouse, it is time to provide that local input to your local conservation and federal agencies. Participate in comment periods, showcase good management and always take advantage of an opportunity educate someone about conservation and production agriculture.
