Partying since the cows came to town What came first, county farming or the county fair? The art of cultivating food is a century-old practice, and at times, it seems that county fairs are just as ancient. Certainly, the Tillamook County Fair has a long tradition. More than 70,000 people flock to our county fair, making it one of the most popular attractions here. The fair’s carnival, entertainment line-up and many attractions add to its popularity. So do the animal exhibits. One attraction that gives residents pride is the dairy cattle show, which often outnumbers that of the Oregon State Fair, according to fair personnel. More than 300 dairy cattle compete in either the open class or 4-H and FFA competitions.

Fair history steeped in agriculture In Tillamook County, street fairs began as early as the mid 1860s and have agriculture roots, according to the Tillamook County Pioneer Museum. Horse sellers would sporadically organize fairs to sell equine and other livestock. Amusement attractions ensured that willing buyers could entertain their families while they conducted business. The first official Tillamook County Fair debuted in July, 1907 adjacent to “the Southern Pacific Railroad tracks,” according to a 1977 Headlight Herald article. The Oregon legislature granted funding for the country appropriation of 4-H club work and the first state-structured

Tillamook County Fair happened in 1916. The state “authorized Oregon to participate in the Extension Education effort called for when Congress passed the Smith-Lever Act of 1914,” according to the Oregon 4-H web site. This act would shape county fairs across the United States and education generations of youth about agriculture. Tillamook County Fair records show the first divisions for agriculture competitors were cattle, sheep, horse conformation, swine, dairy, poultry, horticulture and agriculture. Fair organizers added draft horse events and rabbit entries in 1938. For the town folk and “house wives,” fair records show contests in bicycle and buggy racing, ladies’ nail-driving and “better baby contests.”

The county purchased 84 acres of land in 1920 and began building some of today’s existing fair buildings in 1925. Among those were the horseracing track and main building, which today hosts commercial booths, floral, textile and 4-H exhibits. Dairy show traditions Today’s Tillamook County Fair is still steeped in agriculture tradition. Early dairy exhibitors placed their cattle in physical conformation classes as well

as production classes, which emphasized cheese production. Dairy exhibitors at the 1920 fair drafted a letter of protest to the fair board concerning the “conditions upon which the cheese and milk test was figured for the year 1919, causing a cow to be placed at the head of the list which should have been placed at the foot… as the majority of the dairymen of Tillamook County are anxious to improve the quality of Tillamook Cheese so as to increase price,” according to fair records. Some of the families that signed the protest are still farming today. 1921 saw 4-H members’ animals sorted into different breeds for competition, rather than mingling all dairy breeds together for competition. As a forerunner to today’s

Tillamook Dairy County Dairy Princess-Ambassador contest, the 1930s saw the addition of a county-wide “farmette” program. Dairy farmers’ daughters, sponsored by local Granges, sold fair admission tickets and competed for the opportunity to reign as the year’s Farmette Queen. Today, the number of farmers in the U.S. has dropped to less than two percent of the total population. Across Oregon, the number of agriculture participation at county fairs dwindles. But here, the dairy and livestock entries at the Tillamook County Fair are still part of what makes our fair fun. Editor’s note: A copy of this article ran in a previous edition of the Headlight Herald.

Unusual animals at Brad’s World Reptiles Brad’s World Reptiles of Corvallis will return for another year to the Tillamook County Fair. Animal keepers with Brad’s World Reptiles will bring 40 varieties of animals for zoo-quality displays in the building across from the Pioneer building in the fairgrounds courtyard. Animals from Brad’s World Reptiles have been featured in Chuck Norris movies and on the television show, “The Crocodile

Hunter.” Look for such interesting critters as a four-foot American alligator, a Burmese python, parrots, live insects and others. And if you’re brave enough, many of the reptiles will be available for touching and handling. Staff members will answer questions and give presentations. Several demonstrations will be given on the Courtyard Stage throughout each day as well.

Hits like “Lesson in Leavin’, ” “Because You Love Me,” “Downtime,” “Bring On The Rain,” “That’s The Way” and “My Give A Damn’s Busted” would cement her reputation as one of country’s most loved and enduring hit-makers.

Smash Mouth hits the stage Friday Pop rock band Smash Mouth will start the weekend with a Friday performance Aug. 10. With more than 10 million albums sold worldwide, some of Smash Mouth’s best-known songs include “Walkin’ on the Sun,” “All Star,” “Then the Morning Comes,” “Can’t Get Enough of You Baby,” and a cover of the Monkees classic, “I’m a Believer.” A quick listen to their music and you realize the multi-platinum Smash Mouth is a 60s influenced garage band with a keen pop sensibility that maintains a timeless quality, a

style they have created and that is all their own. Having long since established itself as the ultimate true-to-life California party-band the vibe surrounding Smash Mouth is indeed – at its core – about having fun.
