Board Seems to View County Salaries Differently
BY ROGER GITLIN Country Media, Inc.
The Del Norte Board of Supervisors discussed and passed items 32 and 38 on Tuesday’s Agenda, both unanimously.
• Item 32 extended the authorization for the Sheriff to hire new employees at a step higher than A but no higher than Step C, as initially approved by the Board in May, for a period of six months. The extension for an additional six months was approved.
• Item 38 approved and adopted Salary Resolutions for Unrepresented Classifications including Elected Dept. Heads, Appointed Dept. Heads, Assistant Dept. Heads, Deputy Branch Directors, Confidential Classifications, and Undersheriff Classification. The Board approved a five percent increase as recommended by the Board’s Chief
Negotiator Deborah Muchmore (no pun intended).
The two issues appeared to collide in public comments, and it grew contentious.
Public Speaker Sam Strait expressed his “disgust” supervisors quibbled over “nickles and dimes” for compensating deputies a living wage which Strait said was $10 an hour less than the State average. The discussion became contentious when significant raises were voted for administrative staff which might add several thousands onto upper level administrative salaries. Strait strongly criticized the pending approval of administrators who he says “sit in cozy offices while rank and file employees salaries are so low.”
Public Speaker Linda Sutter said, “five percent raise is outrageous! Sutter condemned supervisors and with a high level
of sarcasm and scorn in her comments saying, “50 cent increase in hourly wages to employees… you are so generous.” She stated the Board’s position on the increase resembled Bell, California which has been labeled a corrupt city, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Norma Williams, SEIU 1021 Chapter president was a bit more subdued but nonetheless expressed her disappointment with the Board’s decision to compensate unrepresented employees with the increase while stalling in addressing rank and file Union employees. Williams stated, “We (represented union members) provide all the services to the public. The public contacts us and expects services. When it comes to employees, you (supervisors) get pretty damn stingy.”
Williams predicted a grim future of employee flight unless
the Board addresses salary disparities.
Board response included a fair amount of frustration. Supervisor Valerie Starkey said, “I’m a little fired up. Some of the information (presented) is inaccurate.” Starkey said she was constrained from commenting because of Closed Session protocol.
The Triplicate has offered P.2 Guest Commentary opportunities to all Supervisors including Supervisor Starkey. With the exception of Board Chair Dean Wilson, no other supervisor has opted to
contribute to The Triplicate for individual comment.
To date, Starkey’s claims of ‘inaccuracies” have not been substantiated.

unofficial Del Norte County vote. Local election for Harbor Commission is as follows: The vote is unofficial until certification. 30 days after the November 5 election.
• DAN SCHMIDT
• ANNIE NEHMER
• JOHN EVANS are the top three vote-getters…
• Devon Morgante trails Evans by 123 votes.
• Linda Sutter remains in the
#5 position • Write-in candidate Harry Adams rounds out the six candidates running for the three openings on the Harbor Commission.
• Measure H $59 million DNUSD school bond and
• Measure I $120 million College of the Redwoods Facilities Bond are heading for defeat. Both needed to pass at a 55 percent threshold but failed to reach even the majority vote.
The Golden State Contributes to Keep the House Red
BY ROGER GITLIN
Country Media. Inc.
At the time of publish-
ing this article, the House of Representative appears to tenuously remain in Republican control.
The current tally of the 435 Congressional seats shows the count at 217 Republicans and 207 Democrats. 219 is the magic number for House control.
If the trend remains and the House stays RED, President-elect Trump 47 will have swept the Big Three, The Trifecta: Presidency, U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives.
California takes a major credit for this event, flipping ten Blue counties to RED; thus flipping possibly two Congressional seats. According to the extremely close-count races and acknowledging at least 10 of 58 counties have flipped to RED, since the 2020 National election.
Orange goes from Blue to Red.
Orange County becomes the second coastal county joining Del Norte to turn RED. The margin was narrow with a 49.2 percent for President-elect Trump, leading a 48.2 percent Kamala Harris votes. Orange
County gave the majority of its votes to Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Joe Biden in 2020.
Riverside County flipped to RED giving President Trump 49.7 percent to Harris 48.2 percent margin.
Butte County flipped RED with 49.5 yo 47.7 percent.
San Joaquin County went RED to 49.9 to 47.5 percent.
Other counties turning Republican include Nevada, Merced, and Stanislaus counties.
The battle for the House continues.

additional funding without hesitation. It is for the children after all. No one has questioned the constantly moving parade of reasons exactly why public education seems to have gotten so incredibly expensive. Not many have bothered to ask the question, just what are we getting for all the money?
As with anything, times appear to have changed, at least in Del Norte County. The Del Norte Unified School District (DNUSD) asked, and local voters said NO! The College of the Redwoods asked, and local voters said NO, as well. Why the change in attitude from the 2008 ask by the school district which produced a 57% YES for a $25 million general obligation bond? While there are likely as many reasons as there are voters in 2024 elections, most folks I’ve encountered are tired of paying enormous sums, close to $80 million for this school year, for the abysmal results produced by the DNUSD. Long overdue…about time! For the school district to ask for an additional $59 million and the college $120 million was a proverbial “bridge too far”. What was the need for so much attention to physical structures when failure to educate doesn’t make an appear-
ance? When was the school district going to recognize its incompetence and stop making excuses for dismal student testing performance? Never?
Following the 2008 bond debacle, people had begun to recognize paying increasing amounts of money for a particular product becomes progressively worse is not going to improve the product. Something has to change and change in a significant fashion it did… The school district exposed for its failure to educate has become will not be rewarded with incompetent student performance and more money until it does something breath-takingly simple: Improve educational performance.
DNUSD and Administration were advised the community, faced with inflation and loss of spending power for the past several years, reached its limit. The voters could no longer bear the cost of an out- of-touch education community which lives in a completely different world than most in Del Norte County and has failed to produce what they are paid to accomplish: EDUCATE!
For many in Del Norte County the time has come to stop the bleeding and demand better performance from the DNUSD before another dollar of the taxpayers’ rapidly shrinking income vanishes all together. The school district product has been defective for decades. Time for all the dis-
tractions to evaporate and the task of preparing our youth to become functional adults, not simply indoctrinated victims becoming the next generation of young adults to enter into the ranks of those dependent on the County’s Department of Health and Human Services.
A school district report to the Board of Supervisors revealed that nearly 60% of the
How can the school district blithely ignore such damming information and without a whit of recognition that the DNUSD is a problem for this community? More money isn’t a fix for the school district. Time to take the blinders off, join the rest of us out here in the real world and do what you are being paid to do: EDUCATE!

Analyzing the election results
So many Americans are asking themselves that question as they are trying to make sense of the election. How could so many vote for a man they we told was a felon, Hitler and a Fascist? How could voters made up of Black, Hispanic, White, Asian, Christian, Hindu, Muslims, Jews, Young Voters, and Women in increasing numbers from the 2020 election to this election, vote for a man portrayed as the leader of a “White Supremacy MAGA movement?”
Please allow me tell you my opinion as to why. First, I must tell you that I was a Democrat for most of my adult life, until I was 40. I was a Democrat because my family were Democrats. On the wall in my home were two pictures, one of Jesus Christ and the other was President Kennedy. At that time the Democrat party was the party of the blue-collar worker, the common man. The Republican Party was the party of the white-collar worker and the rich. For the past four years under Biden/
Election and the Challenge of informed Leadership in Del Norte County
As I consider the recent harbor election results, a concerning statistic springs to mind. Some time ago during a board of supervisors meeting the Del Norte Unified School District announced that 66% of the local population is functionally illiterate. In my view, this has far-reaching implications for how decisions are made within our county. It means a significant portion of the population may be influenced by others rather than making informed, independent choices. I see this as an issue particularly affecting the Republican base in Del Norte County, where voters are sometimes led by endorsements rather than informed personal convictions.
Harris, Americans have watched as our government following Covid, changed. We saw 11 million people illegally cross into our country at the Southern Border added and often funded by our own tax dollars through Non-Governmental Organizations. Our own Federal government moved these illegal migrants all over our States and communities without even asking, causing enormous burdens on the local governments and changing our cities, towns and villages, for them, and for the worse.
These illegal migrants with given free phones, free housing, $10,000 cash, free food, medical and education. All the while the citizens of this nation were dealing with inflation caused by massive spending packages passed in Washington D.C. driving up the costs of fuel, food and rent. Housing costs skyrocketed along with interest rates making the dream of home ownership for the majority of Americans impossible.
Prior to the election, I encountered a troubling incident with the local Republican Central Committee. As an active Republican, I expected to receive an endorsement packet or at least an invitation to speak to the committee. Unfortunately, this was disallowed. Instead, the committee selectively invited only three candidates, two of whom had little or no experience attending the harbor meetings or understanding the issues facing the board. Only one candidate, who has been involved and informed, was genuinely qualified. However, despite this lack of experience, all three candidates were elected. These new commissioners, though well-intentioned, face serious medical challenges, which could impact their ability to maintain a quorum for crucial decisions.
Meanwhile, I have been working to protect and bring positive changes to this community over the past year. One of my key efforts was in defending our fishing community against a joint powers authority
We spent billions supporting the war in Ukraine. We spent billions aiding our enemies and intervening in their political decisions. While at home we moved to de-fund the police and became soft on crime. Citizens watched as their homes, stores and personal safety was sacrificed for a false narrative that America was a systemically racist nation.
We saw a Democrat Party tell all men, but white men in particular, they were to blame for everything and demonized them. The Democrat Party became the party of the elites, billionaires, Hollywood, and those in academia, who taught our children to hate America. We saw them promise to erase the student loan debt of those who attended college while they abandoned blue-collar America, who equally love our country.
Trump won because his message, his promise was to put Americans First. To close our borders, deport those who broke the law to enter our country. To spend the
called Tri-Agency, which sought to implement policies promoting oceanic wind turbines that could have harmed commercial and sport fishing. By taking legal action and filing a Writ of Mandate, I was able to dissolve this agency, thereby safeguarding the fishing industry here.
Additionally, I confronted the Harbor District when it refused to provide requested public documentation, prompting me to file a second Writ of Mandate. Using the Court. I was able to obtain public documents which revealed troubling financial practices, including credit card misuse by the former harbormaster. Further, I submitted a comprehensive 563-page complaint against the harbor district to the grand jury, highlighting significant misappropriations amounting to 75,000.00. Although the grand jury only acted on one part of the complaint, it substantiated that harbor funds had been improperly used to cover personal expenses. Needless to say, my disappointment at not
billions we wasted outside of our country here at home. To stop the over regulation that as promoted environmental energy programs and have stopped oil, natural gas, nuclear and coal plant development. His no tax on tips, overtime and on Social Security payments are all aimed at helping the majority of Americans living on a low or fixed income. His plan to unleash energy development and cut the federal budget by trillions will spark a renaissance in our country. He will fight for those who voted him in as the 47th President, the majority like me who represent not the elites, but the everyday, hard working, God’l- loving American, forgotten by his own party, but embraced by the Trump MAGA movement, which turned out to be the majority of voters. Dean Wilson

This outcome suggests that the community may still favor the familiar over those who push for reform and accountability. Regrettably, this tendency to overlook unconventional leaders represents a

More than Donald Trump, Octavio loved Jesus Christ. Octavio knew that the most important thing in this life was where he went after it.

Stanley and Helen joined Gideons International to help place Bibles in hotels and businesses to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They were members of Fort Dick Bible Church and later attended Smith River Baptist Church.

A huge thank you to those involved and vigilant citizens who’ve called The Triplicate on long-standing graffiti vandalism which besmirches the City and Del Norte County. Volunteers from the Elks Lodge have joined the effort to keep Del Norte County and Crescent City, graffiti-free.
The following sites have been reported to the City for expedient abatement and await removal: • Rite Aid Building, south facing and back of building, 5th St, east of the 101 North. • Pacific Power utility box, south-east corner, Avenue A and Condor Street.
• Gang scrawl on north 1400 Block, • 25 feet off south-east corner of Washington Blvd and California St.
This scrawl is directly north of Roosevelt Estates, multi-family currently units under construction.
• The community should not be compelled to observe this vandalism and requests expedient removal of this ugly scrawl. The Triplicate continues to request community involvement in observing for and contacting us regarding this scrawl. You remain anonymous. triplicantnews@countrymedia. net. (707) 460-6727
