Wood announces he will not seek re-election nearly 30 years as a family dentist in Cloverdale and served on the Healdsburg City Council, including a term as mayor, where I gained a tremendous sense of community and in-depth understanding of the challenges of this mostly rural district faces. The district is vast in geography but smaller in population and includes 300 miles of spectacular coastline. I’ve been an outspoken advocate for rural communities, regularly reminding my colleagues that in a state as large as California, solutions cannot be one-size-fits-all.

In a surprise announcement, Jim Wood (D-Healdsburg) will not seek his 6th and final term in the Assembly. Wood was elected to the 2nd Assembly District in 2014, representing Del Norte, Humboldt, Trinity, Mendocino and northern Sonoma counties, including the city of Santa Rosa, before term limits would have ended in December 2026. In a press release last week, Wood said, “I’ve practiced for
Wood will serve the balance of his 5th two-year term, which will end by year’s end 2024. Wood has chaired the Assembly Health Committee in the Democrat-dominated Golden State. The Assemblymember routinely gathered significant victories in retaining his seat. In 2022, he won with nearly 70 percent of the vote but never prevailed in a Del Norte County election. Wood gave his reasons for not running for a final term. “Many in public office say they are leaving for personal or family
reasons, but that is very real for me,” he said. “My mother has been in declining health and now requires an increasing level of care and I want to be a meaningful part of that.” The assemblymember did not endorse or announce support for his replacement. Del Norte Unified School District Trustee Michael Greer, a Republican, declared his candidacy for the office last week. The filing period window has begun. The primary election is scheduled for Tuesday, March 5.

Council votes to re-erect Tsunami Memorial Community
Thanksgiving dinner will take place at fairgrounds

The Crescent City Council voted unanimously to temporally re-erect the Tsunami Memorial Fountain at the Mason Mall prior to the 60th anniversary of the fountain dedication, March 28, 2024. Councilors are investigating relocating the Fountain to Beachfront Park. Here’s the background of the Memorial fountain: The Tsunami Memorial Fountain and bronze monument was commissioned by the city in 1965, in memory of the 11 lives lost during the 1964 tsunami. Memorial design artist Bruno Groth passed away in 1992. Originally, water jets sprayed from the bronze monument and lights from the pool illuminated the display at night. The water was allowed to cascade over the basin ring into a perimeter drain around the exterior of the basin. In the 70s, a permanent trench was removed so the water was recirculated solely within the

The Crescent City Foursquare Church will again host a free Thanksgiving dinner at the Del Norte County Fairgrounds, from noon to 2 p.m. Thanksgiving day. Lead Pastor Roger Bodenstab welcomes all to this annual event. Last year, 1,200 full course turkey dinners were served. Pastor Bodenstab expects a similar number of meals to be served, this year. The Del Norte Unified School District offered its kitchen facilities to help prepare the meals. Other area Please see DINNER, Page 3
Warriors go down battling in double-OT playoff loss BY RAY HAMILL For The Triplicate
The Del Norte Warriors lost an exciting North Coast Section playoff opener in football on Friday night (Nov. 10), falling 28-22 at Vallejo in double overtime. The Warriors battled back to force overtime when they scored a touchdown and added a two-point conversion with just seven seconds remaining in the game. But they were unable to find the end zone again and ultimately lost when the home team scored a TD in the second OT to advance to the section semifinals. Del Norte was seeded No. 6 in the Division-4 playoff bracket, while Vallejo was seeded No. 3, and, according to head coach Darren LaFazio, the players gave it their all in a tough road environment.
