Renovations Announced For Legacy Homeless Project

Greatest Season Ever!

It was not my intent to write a fluff piece about tourism in Crescent City. The response from visitors coming to our community is nothing short of rewarding. Crescent City and Del Norte County are truly blessed. While Summer temperatures soar into triple digits across fully two-thirds of the country, the climate along the North Coast and

Oregon coastline is deliriously appealing in low to mid 60’s. The great icebreaker question asked of visitors to Crescent City is, “ Where are you folks from? The short answer is “…just about everywhere.”Indeed, most visitors come from Medford, Ashland, Redding and Sacramento. And dispersed across the West, mid-West, and East Coast. This year, record number of visitors are flocking to Crescent City, not just to escape the heat but to fully

enjoy all of the local amenities. The number of visitors is far exceeding our greatest visitor season ever. Stunning news! Executive Director of the Crescent City / Del Norte County Chamber of Commerce Cindy Vosburg shared, “ Folks come here for the Redwoods and the Beaches. This is our opportunity to shine. We’re so fortunate to live here.” Trees of Mystery reports an increase of eight percent from Please see GREATEST Page 12

Airport Receives Big Increase in Essential Air Service Grant

The Border Coast Regional Airport Authority (BCRAA) has secured a new four year Alternate Essential Air Grant Agreement (AEAS) from the Dept. B Transportation (DOT). The amount of the grant is for $19.312 million an increase of $4.6 million, or a 23.8 percent increase from the previous Agreement. The beneficiary of the Award is Advanced Air LLC, which currently offers daily round trip flights from CEC to Oakland (OAK)and twice-weekly fights to Los Angeles / Hawthorne (HHR) airport, an eight minute drive to LAX.

The AEAS Agreement ensures expanded, continued connectivity from Crescent City and throughout the Border Coast Region.

Since March of this year, multiple meetings have taken place between BCRAA, Michael Mooney of Volaire Aviation Consulting, Advanced Air LLC and the DOT.

The primary objectives have been to enhance regional air service, ensure safety, reliability, expand destination options, from Crescent City and promote business growth and augment tourism.

Next Summer, Advanced Air plans to expand flight frequency from CEC to OAK and HHR.

Lania Fink, daughter of Richard Hagel, owner of the warehouse who passed away last October, shared with The Triplicate the devastation wrought by the June 19 incident.

Lania has been working with homeowners insurace to determine the extent of coverage

Charles Nicolas received a call late that Wednesday evening, moments after emergency crews were dispatched to the fully-engulfed fire of the 300 sq. ft structure on State Street. With permission of firefighters, Nicolas was able to remove his forklift, salmon tank and salmon pole. Everything else, including 300 mint condition crab pots perished. Each crab pot is valued

at $175. The impact of this fire also affects deck hands who worked on the crabpots. Nicolas said his estimated losses totaled $200,000.

Nicolas is not alone is this tragedy. Allen Loretz, Jeremy Hurst and Wes Taylor also suffered equipment and fishing gear loss in the blaze. Sadly, their living has been destroyed.

Firefighters labored for nine hours containing the fire.

A GO FUND ME page has been established for those wishing to help.

gofund.me/6e4036db Daughter Lania Fink has posted a Go Fund Me Page, entitled Help Crescent City Fishermen Rebuild.

No cause of the destructive fire has been announced.

I Support Mike Greer for Assembly

As the former Executive Assistant to the Board and Superintendent of the Santa Rosa City Schools District, I support Mr. Michael Greer as the CA District 2 Assembly candidate. DNUSD and Del Norte County School Board Trustee Michael Greer is currently challenging Santa Rosa City

Councilmember Chris Rogers for the open seat. As a retired Special Education Transition Specialist, Mr. Greer, Crescent City has a proven track record collaboratively to bring positive change to his constituents. Greer held the position of Elected Director for Region 1 of the California County Boards of Education, representing Lake, Mendocino, Humboldt and Del Norte Counties. Lastly, Greer is psst president of the California

Guest Column

Teachers Association, representing Special Education professionals.

According to Cal Matters, “ In California, only 58 percent of 4th grade students can read at a basic level based on the most recent National of Education Progress (NAEP),” according to the Report.

As California youth literacy rates continue to drop exponentially, it is critical to have a strong advocate for coming generations. The public education system must strive to truly represent the best

Consent Agenda Lacks Transparency

I have stood before the Del Norte County Board of Supervisors many times over the past few years to voice my dismay over a wide variety of issues that have come before the Board that never seem to end in the public’s favor.

One of the most egregious abuses of governance on this over-dependence is the Consent Agenda to pass by (a single vote) almost always unanimous vote many items of business with little transparency or discussion.

In the most recent meeting, June 25, fully 26 of the 38 items were placed on the Consent Agenda which passed with near-total lack of discussion, 4-0 Supervisor Howard being absent. The Public would have been allowed (to speak) but three minutes to comment on the many items, a near impossibility to communicate concerns when many items require clarification and further discussion, yet that is the limit the Board has installed despite the numerous objections by members of the Public. The behavior of the Board has all the earmarks of rule by decree rather than representative governance. Fully 70 percent of this meeting was handled in the Consent Agenda in less than ten minutes of a four hour meeting.

The Consent Agenda was originally put in place to streamline government meetings by constructing a brief list of non-controversial items, minutes of the previous meeting letters and awards of recognition. proclamation days, etc., that necessitated a vote of approval by the Board. It now contains a vast majority of the County’s general business, contracts for vendors, contracts for services, promotions, job re-classification, raises for employees and a general bureaucratic wish list for the County’s un-elected. At some point the wants of the bureaucratic administration of Del Norte County has superseded the needs in the Board’s participation in the governance of the County.

When a member of the Board asks for an item to be removed for further discussion, it is granted without exception. This is not an option afforded to the Public, thereby excluding any of the Public’s concern on an item in question. It now begs the question who exactly is running the show: The Board of Supervisors or the County’s un-elected; and if it’s not our elected representatives then what need is there for supervisors if they only listen to the un-elected.

June 2023, the previous record year.

Out of towners are flocking to the Visitor Center on Front St. at a rate of 90-194 per day, seeking direction on where to go and what to do in Del Norte County. Vosburg continued, “ Folks are here to have a great time, and they are.”

Brookings, Gold Beach, Port Orford and Beaver State points northward are also enjoying the benefits of the temperate climate and magnificent geography.

The appreciation for those of who visit the North Coast is duly recognized. Lots of smiles and no shortage of Thank You comments at attractions and restaurants.

The Triplicate spoke with several of these visitors who’ve fled the enervating heat and responded to a few questions.

• Hi, folks, Where are you from?

• What brings you to Crescent City? How long is your visit?

• Are you enjoying yourselves? Any favorite places?

• Do you plan a return visit?

• Travel mode?

• What will you tell your friends about our seaside community.

These mini-interviews were conducted at Trees of Mystery, Ocean World,

The Visitor Center, Sea Quake, Battery Point Lighthouse and South Beach.

The comments from the public were overwhelmingly favorable. Over the course of scores of interviews, there was nary a complaint… Some fled their home communities to escape the heat and humidity. Most proudly said

they came here to see the Redwoods and Beaches. All said, they’re here to have a great time.

• Zack and family from Waterbury, CN. came to Trees to experience the Redwoods. Gary and Family from south east MT, came for the trees and cool climate.

• David and family from Yakima, WA., Justin and Family from Salt Lake City, were happy to share

their recent experience at Battery Point.

• Becky and Erin from central Illinois were visiting grandparents in Crescent City

• Karl from Bavaria remarked how quiet and noise-free Crescent City is. Most folks were here from 5-8 days. We’re just getting rolling, folks. Motels, RV Parks, Vacation Rentals are very busy. Restaurants
