Tragedy Mars Fireworks Display on South Beach

The time was about 10:45 July 4 evening and the Fireworks Show from the Jetty had just ended. The site was South Beach, several thousand onlookers were treated to a fabulous show…then tragedy struck.

Facebooker SuZanna Kathlene Church shared the disturbing news on the incident which placed her three year old nephew identified as baby William Lupan , in harm’s way.

Sheriff Garrett Scott declared the fireworks were highly illegal and an investigation is currently underway. The Sheriff reported 14 additional individuals were reported injured but was not specific in details. The family reports William’s condition is touch and go and expresses deep appreciation from the community’s concern. The family is also grateful for those who so generously contribute to the Go Fund Me page,

Schools’ Enrollment Down, Board Keeps Spending

I haven’t been to a school board meeting since I learned the Oversight Committee for the previous $25 million General Obligation Bond was a joke, even when it actually met. For the past 16 years the County’s property owners and renters have paid down less than a quarter of the amount owed on the 2008 version of “Help! It’s for the children” Bond.

A according to the District, at the time, student

occupation grown had made it imperative that the District’s classroom shortage necessitated some new classrooms and modernization. Well, we didn’t get any new classrooms. A couple of gyms and a mixed bag of odds and ends completed the 16 year long expenditure billed as “a critical need for more classrooms.”

The latest ask by the Del Norte Unified School District is for $59 million with interest making the tab on the 30 year note over $100 million. I’m quite sure in

the run up on the November election, Johnnie has a bucket on his desk to catch drips from a leaking roof but we are assured no salaries or benefits will be paid from the Bond. Sound familiar?

Before we are even close to paying off the previous Bond, another catastrophe is claimed to lurk in the DNUSD’s aging schools and a much larger pot of money is essential to stave off collapse of the District. Before we all fall prey to another bit of the District’s chicanery,

particularly in light of the not particularly glowing product being produced by the District, quick look at the most recent budget report produced the following: Of the Districts 11 schools, the District ranks their respective physical condition as two in good condition, seven in fair condition and only two in poor condition. Considering the fact the student population will reduce to about 3,000 by the years 2025/26, wouldn’t a more prudent action be to mothball the

schools in poor condition and shift their population to schools in better condition without obligating the County’s financially beleaguered condition to yet another tax, a potential solution. For decades, regular maintenance was an afterthought by past and present boards. Salaries and benefits were annually a contentious Spring sport between school administration and employees over pay and benefit increases. Now it is revealed that local salaries and benefits compare favorably with

surrounding areas. While this be the time for that maintenance and modernization, it appears the good times of budget windfall during Covid are coming back to bite the local school district, $80 plus millions last year to a little over $67 million in the coming year and it doesn’t get any better after that. Perhaps it is time for the District to look hard at its financial needs and do a little serious trimming rather than ask for more money from the local community.

Shows are great for the local economy. Most car Shows are Benefit events. Funds are collected from vehicle entry fees and assorted events including Raffles, 50/50 Draw, Silent Auction, T-Shirt sales with vendors supplementing donation amounts. Those proceeds average 10’s of thousands of dollars per show and are directed to a myriad of needy services. Brookings kicked off the “season” with the Curry Cruiser Benefit Car Show at the Brookings Harbor. The two day, 30th annual event included the Azalea Parade and took place Saturday and Sunday, May 25-26. $16,120 is in process of being distributed to some 24 local organizations which help in the feeding the community, supporting children, women, seniors, animal shelters, fire safety and related community activities. August 24, The Cruisers will announce the dispersal of these collected funds at 1pm at the Chetco Community Center.

The formula for the schedule of these Benefit Car Shows is essentially the same. A lot of good is being provided by the Curry Cruisers in Brookings.

The Tribes and their casinos also help in raising funds for worthy organizations. Lucky 7 Casino which formally was the prime supporter for the local Muscular Dystrophy Association will now host a

car show event of approximately 125 classics and hot rods and raise funds for the Partnership for the Performing Arts Center due to break ground in 2026. Indeed, Benefit Car Shows bolster our economy and provide vital services to our rural communities. Here’s the schedule for the remainder of Car Show season, 2024:

• Redwood AutoXPO in Fortuna, July 26-28.

• Fabulous 50’s in Grants Pass, July 27.

• Del Norte County Fair, August 2.

• Firemen’s Steak Feed benefits fire prevention services in Coquille, August 3.

• Lucky 7 / Partnership for Performing Arts, Smith River, August 17.

• Winchester Bay Kool Coastal Nights, Winchester Bay, August 24.

• Elk Valley Casino/ Northern Knights, Crescent City, Inaugural event, August 31.

• Port Orford Car Show, August 31.

• Cruzin’ Eureka, 2nd and C Street, Old Town, Sept. 7.

• Ferndale Concours on Main St, Ferndale, Sept. 15.

• Cruising the Coast, Coos Bay, Sept. 21.

• Myrtle Point Car Show, Myrtle Point Sept. 28.

• Sea Cruise Car Show/ Chamber of Commerce/ Northern Knights Car Club at Beach Front Park, Crescent City, October 5.

Many thanks and recognition to Curry County Cruiser members Lori Connolly and Tom Lee for their contribution in helping report this story.

- A Vertical Dance Camp in the Redwoods.

Lauren Godla, with DiRT & Glitter Art, wants to let the community know about a free opportunity for local youth ages 1424 taking place this summer, July 22-26th in the redwoods.

Lauren recently started an Environmental Art nonprofit, the aforementioned, Dirt & Glitter, and they received funding from the Klamath Promise Neighborhood to put on a Summer Vertical Dance Camp in

a beautiful redwood grove within Smith River National Recreation Area. She will be teaching with 2 other professional vertical dancers, a youth counselor from the Yurok Tribe, and some amazing local environmental and cultural presenters. There is space for 6 more dancers in the camp, so please spread the word. The camp will take place 9am3pm Monday - Friday (July 22-26th) and participants must be able to commit to the entirety of the camp as there will be a showing at the end of the week! Norte beaches back to pristine status. Recology Del Norte provided debris collection at zero cost to the community. Volunteers from Rural Human Services, California Dept. of Fish and Wildlife, Recology Del Norte, California State Parks, Del Norte Solid Waste Management Authority and Cal Trans all had a hand in removing

every tiny bit of litter and returning our beaches to its breathtaking natural beauty. The tonnage did not include recyclables and the gross weight was less than the-near four tons of spent fireworks collected July 5, 2023. The reduction is noteworthy since Redwood Parks and Smith River Alliance have conducted education within the community and brought the litter problem to the public’s attention. More visitors are self-policing. Autumn Subers, Volunteer Coordinator of Redwood Conservancy heaped praise on the public for doing its part in reducing the pollution impact on Del Norte beaches and ocean. RPC Executive Director Sal Munoz credited dedicated volunteers in “…making a tangible difference in protecting the coastal ecosystem and preserving the natural beauty of Crescent City.”

career, Del Norte’s Preston Daniels wants to make the most of his opportunity.

And he’s working hard on and off the field of competition to make sure he does.

The soon-to-be Warriors senior has been one of the best local high school pitchers since he broke into the school’s varsity team as a freshman, and this summer he has been honing his talents with 5 Star Pacific Baseball, a travel club based in San Jose. Daniels, who was an all-league selection for Del Norte this past spring, has already traveled with 5 Star Pacific for a pair of showcase tournaments this summer, one in San Diego and one in Georgia.

And he says the experience has

been beneficial and a lot of fun.

“It was definitely an adventure,” he said of his trip to Georgia. “The competition over there is insanely good. It was definitely a fun experience.”

With another trip to Arizona scheduled for the fall, it’s also been an expensive experience, but Daniels has been working hard to make sure it all happened, raising $3,000 on his own.

And with hopes of playing for a top college program some day, he says it was an opportunity he felt he needed to take advantage of,

“I saw there were some big schools their kids are going to,” Daniels said of the 5 Star Pacific program

“And I talked to my parents and we thought it was a great opportunity for me, especially living in a small town.”

The investment in his own future appears to be paying off.

He has appeared in 10 games for the team, including two starts on the mound.

In those two starts — one each in San Diego and Georgia — he went 2-0 with an impressive ERA of 2.10.

“I feel like I did really well,” he said. “These are some of the top (high school) players in the nation and even some future Major Leaguers. These guys are good.

“They’re a lot bigger and they’re a lot stronger. Everybody there is strong, and it’s really encouraged me to get in the gym and get bigger. The competition there was just awesome. Everybody’s like an MVP. It’s defi-

nitely a step up.”

Daniels allowed just four hits in 10 innings in those two starts and struck out nine batters.

He also was named to the all-tournament team in San Diego and the experience of playing for 5 Star Pacific Baseball should put him on the radar of some of the top college programs on the West Coast.

He says he has already been looking at some junior colleges and is considering his options, but he added that he wants to play for a Division-I program some day.

However, he also knows he has to continue to work hard to achieve that goal.

“I’ve definitely looked at some colleges,” he said. “I’ve looked at a couple of junior colleges. Division-I, that’s my main goal. I’ve got to hit the gym hard and train hard, and hopefully get a scholarship to a Division-I school.

“I feel like if I keep doing my thing, I can go to a good college.”

Between now and then he still has some unfinished business to take care of on the high school fields and would like to close out his Warriors career with a bang.

He also wants to see his game continue to improve in his final year of high school.

“One of the goals I have for next year is to get more strikeouts,” he said. “I also want to get better at hitting.”

As a junior, Daniels finished with an impressive 102 strikeouts and batted .300.

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of the outstanding lien that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.” For sales conducted after January 1, 2021: NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (844) 477-7869, or visit this internet website www. STOXPOSTING.com, using the file number assigned to this case 87174 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid by remitting the funds and affidavit described in Section 2924m(c) of the Civil Code; so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. Board Chair Dean Wilson told The standing room audience that supervisors would not individually respond to this morning’s strong public comment. Wilson issued the following statement via Facebook:

Crescent City and Del Norte County celebrated America’s 248th birthday with a monumental Parade, July 4th.

Crescent City Police Chief Richard Griffin remarked, “ This year’s Parade was the largest I’ve seen since becoming Chief.” An estimated 5,000 plus lined the Parade route on H, 3rd, K and Front Streets, six to seven deep, according to Griffin.

Magnificent Summer weather, no fog cover to speak of, allowed for a spectacular Fireworks Show later that evening. Here are the float award winners:

SuZanna Kathlene Church shared, “Last Night (Thursday) in Crescent City, a group of people who were playing with mortars, made a mistake and the box exploded. My nephew (William Lupan) was in the crossfire.

I’m not 100 percent sure on the story really about the people who were lighting off the mortars. I’m hoping to get more details these people will be brought to justice. Because, if you look at the picture, it’s not fair that a tiny little innocent baby has to be in this condition. I’ve
