Del Norte County: How to Pronounce Norte
BY ROGER GITLIN Country Media, Inc.
Last week, the City, County and Synergy Group Developers from Los Angeles were touting the new 162 unit housing project Battery Apartments at Gary and Streets. The list of attendees for the groundbreaking was impressive. Introductions of City, County and other notables was extensive.
The spokesman for Synergy shared details of the project and spoke well…except for one notso- little detail. He pronounced The County name as Del
NORT-AY. It’s certainly not the first time (nor last) Nort-AY has been mispronunced, especially by those not so familiar with the North State.
To this mispronunciation one might say, what’s the big deal about pronouncing Norte. Others have said mispronouncing N o r t e is akin to running a fresh stick of chalk down a very dry board...uncomfortable to the ear.
The Synergy project is a huge undertaking with lots of partners, addressing the dearth of affordable housing in Crescent City and Del Norte County. In America, Portuguese communi-
ties are prominent in Providence, Boston, New York, New Jersey and Portugal, AND Del Norte County. Nearly 400,000 folks in California speak Portuguese. The correct pronunciation looks like this DEL N O R T (no E)… The legacy is Portuguese, not Spanish. Del Norte’s history is steeped in the rich heritage of the smaller of the two countries on the Iberian Peninsula, Portugal and the Azores islands. Nonetheless, a very powerful seafaring country centuries ago. Iconic Portuguese explorers like Christopher Columbus, Vasco da
Gama, Bartolomeu Dias, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, Ferdinand Magellan and scores more discovered the New World. The Portuguese left their footprint on the modern world. Portuguese is the spoken language in Brazil, Mozambique and Angola, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Sao Tome and Principe, East Timor, Goa and Macau.
No disrespect is intended to the Synergy Group or the seemingly endless list of outside contractors who help to improve our community. The subtle suggestion is to kindly pronounce Del Norte with its deep Portu-

Sheriff says doughnuts expensive, Supervisors don’t care
BY SAMUEL STRAIT
There is an inescapable certainty in human history when it comes to reading the future path of a government that fails to understand that it cannot cost more than the population it governs can afford. Del Norte County has long passed that threshold and has begun the downward spiral of a failing government.
Signs of this downward spiral are clearly evident when the most critical service that a government can offer is the ability to provide for the safety and security of its people and it is no longer to be found.
On September 1, 2024 at approximately 8:30 am my brother and I had to make the dreaded phone call. My Father, Denny Wayne Haddad who lives with me was missing. He has Alzheimer’s.
I want to thank the Crescent City Sheriff’s department and their special Search and Rescue unit. Their response time was very impressive. Luckily, he was found within 2 and half hours. He is doing fine. This is to thank all who responded. And to those who live on Skycrest Drive. Everyone pulled together. I live in one of the best neighborhoods, I can’t say enough. He is our dad and we love him very much. All of you are really appreciated.
Guy Haddad Jerry Haddad
The County Board of Supervisors has been made aware that vital services have been less than satisfactory for decades. In particular, the prime source of safety and protection has degraded to the point that a single deputy patrols a County the size of Rhode Island during nearly every shift. Response time can easily exceed an hour or more, long after an intervention would be critical. As county government continues to ignore this growing problem by focusing on holding hands with needy directors in the remaining parts of local government, the sheriff finds himself suspended over a growing gulf of indif-
ference.
For the past nine months, the Sheriff has made it clear that his department can no longer function as it is meant to unless it receives support from the County’s Board of Supervisors. Thus far, that support has yet to appear.
Dwindling staff and a growing number of vacancies make it impossible for the Sheriff to attend in a timely fashion local emergencies and 911 calls. At a recent event that occurred during the Fourth of July fireworks, the County narrowly escaped a horrific tragedy and near loss of a three-year-old child. The sheriff’s
department clearly lacked the manpower to prevent illegal fireworks activity on South Beach. Any additional regulations and bans will not change that dynamic. Only providing the sheriff with necessary manpower salted with a few experienced officers will halt the continuing downward trajectory. That will take money.
Instead of heeding the Sheriff’s repeated warnings, the Board continues to sit on its hands and make noises about a compensation study, five months in the future. The time to act is NOW!

Medal of Valor Awarded to PBSP Sergeant
BY ROGER GITLIN Country Media, Inc.
Pelican Bay State Prison
Sergeant Charles Davis was awarded the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) Medal of Valor, last Friday, at the 39th Medal of Valor ceremony in Galt. Sgt. David risked his life to enter a burning house to save a stranger. It turned
out the life he saved was the nephew of another Sergeant at PBSP.
On a Friday afternoon in August, 2023, Davis was driving home in Crescent City after working a dou-
ble shift when he noticed a house on fire. Sgt. Davis pulled over and pounded on the front door. Dogs were barking inside and a neighbor said multiple people lived in the home. Davis entered the house and searched the rooms for occupants. As he was searching, he was bitten multiple times by the dogs. In one bedroom, Davis found a young man sleeping; he awakened the individual and asked if anyone else was home. The young man said he was alone and Davis carried the disabled

Limited, a specialist wall contractor. The repair will consist of spanning approximately 200 feet on the bluff between 7th and 8th. The project is expected to last 12 weeks and complete by November 30. The estimate to construct the wall was low and an additional $1.8 million was required, making the total wall bid $4.6 million. The EO funding will be provided by State Senator Mike McGuire’s office which successfully obtained $7.9 million in state funding cash flow to be granted to the City for this emergency project.
young man out of the burning house. Davis was able to rescue the three dogs from the fully engulfed structure. The house belonged to the sister of another PBSP Sergeant. Her son has severe mental handicap requiring medication that causes him to sleep very deeply. Were it not for the efforts of Sgt. Charles Davis, the young man and dogs would have perished in the blaze.
Congratulations Sgt. Charles Davis, Pelican Bay State Prison.

“It’s OK to say I’m not OK,” says Gordon Clay, suicide prevention advocate.
The dedicated champion to save lives continues to work tirelessly to make Curry and Del Norte counties aware of the spike in suicide attempts, this past summer.
Octogenarian Clay was raised in rural Kansas and experienced the suicide loss of his dearest friend who was helping the young Clay through a serious domestic family issue back in the 80’s. When The Triplicate asked him what might be the reasons suicides have dramatically spiked, Clay responded, “ Social Media has most definitely contributed to the problem. Social Media has accelerated depression and anxiety issues. People of all ages don’t just commit suicide: people take their own lives to escape the unbearable pain in which they exist and in doing so impact family / friend survivors.”
Clay received his third Proclamation in 10 days, recognizing September as Suicide Awareness and Prevention month. The City, County and School District each presented their Proclamations, respectively. This year, elected were made painfully aware of the spike in suicides in both Curry and Del Norte counties
Clay underscored suicide affects all age and demographic groups and praised tele- therapy as a viable tool in helping those
dealing with cobtenplating suicide and who wish to exit the living world.
“Every life Matters,” Clay exclaims. Each of us needs to outreach with individuals who you suspect seem confused, moody, angry, anxious or agitated, lonely, bereft of self-esteem, expressing hopelessness and expressing no reason to live and ask R U O K?” says Clay. And be a good listener.
Curry County whose largest demographic group is Seniors, ranks 4th in suicides/ attempts among 36 Oregon counties, per 100,000 population. Astounding!
Tragically, youth as young as 10 are finding ways to take their lives. He urged young folks to text 741 741 for help. Churches, synagogues and temples must also do outreach with their adherence to helping mitigate the serious spike in suicide attempts. The Jehova Witness group is also conducting outreach in it door knocking effort and ask dwellers R U O K?
Sadly, Sheriff/ Coroner Garrett Scott reported a record four suicides during the month of August. The ratio of suicides per 100,000 population is worsening and is on trend to set an annual record. Scott laments economic conditions may likely worsen in the immediate future. “The reservoir of hope is near empty,” says Scott. “This dynamic is omnipresent.”
We must all reach out…R U O K?

You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more
times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (844) 477-7869 or visit this Internet Web site www.STOXPOSTING. com, using the file number assigned to this case 2431206. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. For sales conducted after January 1, 2021: NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (844) 477-7869, or visit this internet website www. STOXPOSTING.com, using the file number assigned to this case 24-31206 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. Tourism to Redwood National Park Contributes Huge Boost to Del Norte
Redwood National Park, Visitors to Redwood National Park spent $29.6 million in 2023.
BY ROGER GITLIN Country Media, Inc.
Last week’s Triplicate featured an article National Parks contributed $55.6 billion across 31 states making a profound contribution to local economies in which the Parks serve. No details were released at that time on the economic impact on Del Norte County. The National Park Service(NPS) reports 409,105 visitors spent $29.6 million in communities near Redwood National Park. That spending supported 384 jobs in the local area and had a cumulative benefit to the local economy of $37.9 million.
“People come to Redwood to enjoy the solitude of ancient forests and rugged coastline and end up supporting the U.S. and local economies along the way,” said Superintendent Steve Metz.
The NPS report for 2023 finds that $325.5 million visitors spent $26.4 billion in communities near National Parks. Lodging followed by restaurants contributed $9.9 million and $5.2 billion, respectively in direct economic contributions.
