Renowned sandboarding Pioneer named Rhododendron Festival Grand Marshal
The Florence Area Chamber of Commerce just named their grand marshal for the 117th annual Florence (Oregon) Rhododendron Festival grand floral parade.
Lon Beale, known internationally as Dr. Dune for pioneering the sport of sandboarding and founding both Sand Master Park and Dune
Riders International, will lead the parade and serve as an ambassador for Florence.
Beale, and his wife Robin, have been Florence residents for about 24 years since opening the world’s first sandboarding park in 2000. Sand Master Park has
me, is a very clear affiliation and frankly, it’s not something we need to put ourselves or our district at risk on. They want a clear path to move forward. I think the cleanest and easiest way to do that is to deny the application and let them take it up with the Oregon Department of Education. I don’t think this is our fight to fight.”
Chair Brian Lacouture said another option would be to create a contract based on the approved application from October which does not contain a third party affiliation.
“It would indeed still require that, and it would be in the contract, that there is not that third party affiliation,” he said. Lacouture explained that the charter’s proposed curriculum is not at issue, but its governance and affiliation are.
Director John Barnett agreed, suggesting the board use Oregon Department of Education guidance, as well as spell out the board’s expectations for a contract.
Lacouture added that if those expectations are not met, the contract could not be ratified.
Director Dianna Pimlott suggested SVCS had essentially met requirements to disavow Hillsdale college, through its assertions that “ affiliation” did not constitute control of
the charter, thereby meeting ORS338 standards.
“It doesn’t matter how we define affiliation,” Director Maureen Miltenberger answered, “and it doesn’t matter how they define affiliation. What matters is when it gets to the state and they say you are in compliance or not in compliance. That’s where it matters what the definition of that word is.” She said it will be up to the state to determine whether the board is in compliance and could punitively take money from the district.
Director Josh Haberly agreed, saying, “We don’t know either way, there’s an argument on both sides
The following press release was issued by SVCS Tuesday, Feb 20.
The Siuslaw Valley Charter School Founding Board believes we have more than adequately addressed concerns regarding our relationship with the Hillsdale College K-12 office by providing substantial supporting documentation, including a letter from ORS338 co-sponsor Representative Mannix of the district’s misinterpretation of the statute. However, we have made the decision to move forward using the public school classical education curriculum only, and not as a member school. We will inform the Hillsdale College K-12 office that SVCS will no longer seek their teacher training services. It is important to note that the public classical K-12 curriculum developed by Hillsdale that we will be using, is approved and used in public charter schools all over the country
The letter of intent in question has never held any legal control over SVCS, however the SVCS board will rescind the letter of intent today in an effort to move quickly and efficiently into the contract negotiation stage. Our goal is to begin the Head of Schools hiring process now and open our doors in September of 2025, offering public school choice in the Siuslaw School District.
on the scene, they found the woman was out of the water. Bystanders told fire personnel that a man in the woman’s party went in after her and both were able to get to a rock offshore before others helped the back to the beach. The two were examined for injuries at the scene and treated by medical personnel. Responding units were canceled.

“I never considered a difference of opinion in politics, in religion, in philosophy, as cause for withdrawing from a friend.”
Per capita, Oregon has nearly three times the national average of registered sex offenders. Sex offenders in Oregon can register in one
town and live in another.
Florence has about 60 registered sex offenders, however, the State sex offender website lists only one. A sex offender failing to register in Oregon commits a misdemeanor. In
48 other states, it would be a felony. It is estimated that 40% of Oregon registered sex offenders come here from other states because Oregon sex offender laws are so lax. Oregon sex offender laws relative to registration, assessment, tracking, and Community notification scream for reform. The Florence City Council, the Siuslaw School Board, State Senator Dick Anderson, State Representative Boomer Wright, and numerous other entities have been made aware of the above issues. So far, all that has been gained is a collective yawn. What is going on in our society when the anonymity of a sex offender trump’s the safety of our children and grandchildren?
This is my second letter to the editor, the first being about 1 year ago. Perhaps someone more influential than I am will pick up the serious need for reform.
Dean LottWhile watching the Memorial for George Floyd, I was moved to tears by Rev Al Sharpton’s Eulogy. And, moved also by the family’s attorney to battle on with the fight for justice and equality for all Americans no matter their race, ethnicity or religion. This has been my purpose in life since returning from Vietnam. That is the reasoning for my many posts against Trump and those who blindly follow his anti-American and anti-Christian
behavior. I will continue to be a soldier against his policies and those of Right Wing Extremists who seek to destroy our great Nation.
As for my personal history, I was on the front lines of the Anti-War movement beginning in August of 1970 after my return from the horrors of Vietnam. Greg Hedgecock, Craig West and I formed two demonstrations in Coos Bay against the Vietnam War, one with over 100 demonstrators.
I worked hard on shutting down the Menasha sludge pipeline that was polluting our North Spit and even made Walter Cronkite News because of my efforts. I was invited twice to symposiums on race relations in Portland because of my writings regarding the serious issues of race facing the city. Both seminars were filmed by a local TV station and I was allowed to speak at both. I also marched against the first and second Iraq Wars in Portland and during the George W. Bush war against Saddam Hussein I was asked to read my anti-War poems in the morning and at the evening demonstration where 4,000 plus protesters were waiting for speakers. After I finished my most famous poem, “War Dead,” there were cheers aplenty and the night was lit with candles and lighters in appreciation. That also brought tears to my eyes. There were other demonstrations and letters pertaining to my efforts to bring truth to dishonesties and lies. That is my purpose in life.
School District opts to write contract

Saying he would like to have additional state guidance, director Barnett noted the board has no experience in opening a charter school.
“I don’t think we’ve got it exactly laid out, he said. “Then we have this bump in the road called Hillsdale, that we’re all trying to figure out how to navigate, as well. we’ve got some conflicting situations when we’re looking at the statute. I really believe, and I am very liability adverse, I will be the first to admit I’m not a charter school expert and I would really like to have some additional guidance for our sake and their sake. I think ODE would be a good avenue to at least give us some additional guidance on how to be able to navigate the statute itself.”
“I think that by continuing, We are continuing our liability and I think the clearest way for them to get that guidance from ODE is for us to deny and for them to appeal to ODE and I think that’s the easiest route for them.”
After discussion about the language of a motion, ODE assistance and legal terminology, the board voted 5-2 not to deny the charter application, which would have made SVCS appeal to the Oregon Department of Education.
Now what?
“We are at a crossroad but we can’t stand in the middle of the intersection,” Lacouture said.
In regard to proceeding with the October application as it was written, Director Sneddon said, “We asked them after the October application to disavow their affiliation with Hillsdale and I understand Dianna [Pimlott] is saying that they have, but they have not. They are a member
school so now we are back to the same back and forth we’ve been doing which is ‘what is the definition of affiliation’ and it’s not our job to define that.”
Haberly clarified that if the board approves the October application, with a contract which does not include a third-party affiliation with Hillsdale College, it will put the onus on SVCS to meet the terms of the board-approved contract.
After much back and forth discussion about redefining legal terms, community support/opposition to a and ODE review of prospective contracts, Miltenberger asked If the state could act punitively against Siuslaw School District.
“If there is an illegal contract in place, ODE will tell us to remedy it and then they will withhold our funds until that is done or completed, Grzeskowiak said. “ We have to approve it first, then it goes to [ ODE].”
Pimlott seemed skeptical that ODE would fine the district for bringing forward a contract for evaluation and director Barnett agreed, saying the district would not send a contract to ODE in violation of state law. Grzeskowiak unpacked the timeline at length.
“Last week, their commentary was about needing to go to the Supreme Court- so there was pre-knowledge that this affiliation was going to be an issue. The letter of intent was not presented with the first application. The second application was then revised to bring it out of….”
“This is history, so we’re stepping back into the murk...” Pimlott interrupted. “We’re trying to go forward at this point.”
“Yes, again, we approved an application in good faith after providing technical assistance to get an application that was viable and then afterwards, the one key piece that was never provided, and predated all the applications, was this letter of intent with Hillsdale. They knew that it was going to be an issue and they withheld it. We could have solved this matter last May and this was withheld. The board could not make an informed decision. Now it’s being reintroduced after the fact and this has been the problem, so instead of actually dealing with that issue, we’re debating about words of affiliation and not the fact that the application was submitted improperly with information withheld. So again, if they want to go and challenge the law, the fastest way for them to do that is to not rely on this board, but to take it to ODE and make the appeal straight to them because you’ve never
had the chance to look at it wholly, because if you go back and amend their application to include the Hillsdale portion of the letter of intent, that contract, you will now have violated ORS338 and have approved an application that is affiliated with a third party. That’s where this catch 22 has been created for the board. If you go back and include it now, you will now have created this affiliated link because the letter predates the application. I met with the group first in February 2022, their letter of intent is dated October of 2022, the first half application was evaluated in May of 2023. It was then approved after technical assistance in October of 2023. Then it’s revealed in December of 2023. We have a tremendous timeline problem. Had it been just submitted at the beginning and then denied or approved, then the decision falls on the district and that’s our problem. Now, because it was not submitted wholly and cleanly to begin with, it’s this issue that has been backdated and never presented.” said Grzeskowiak “Why was this not presented? Why did we find out last week that Hillsdale had representatives in the town? That would have been key information to know in making a decision about this process and it was never given to you, it was never given to me and it was never given to this community.”
Discussion
Director Miltenberger said there were no other Hillsdaleaffiliated charters in Oregon.
“The reason that there’s not one in Oregon that’s affiliated with Hillsdale or however you want to define the word is because it’s against the law,” Miltenberger said.”It’s real clear that you can have a traditional or a classical education Charter School in Oregon because we have met people that have those in Oregon.”
When board members expressed that they were not sure how to continue, Grzeskowiak said the board will go into contract negotiations will likely continue.
“We are going to continue this spin and … the process will die for lack of a signed contract. That is what is going to happen, period, because again, there will be changes that need to be made that will violate ORS338. I will not make them, or the board
At the Feb. 14 Siuslaw School District Board of Directors meeting, comments from the public were again focused on the district’s consideration of a charter school and its intention to affiliate with Hillsdale College.
Donna Mlinek said that when she and her husband moved to Florence, they knew they were going to be giving up certain amenities.
We love Florence, she said. but now our little town is divided over the demand by a small group of people for a choice in schools. as I understand it, they feel our school is inadequate and poor quality and they want the choice to send their children to a better school. I’m perplexed by this as from everything I’ve school and heard, our school is quite good, I’ll be struggling like all schools. She said she was concerned that the small town would not be able to support two schools, and that the duplication of services will create a greater burden on teachers and administrators.
“I asked to see an analysis of how the new Charter School would financially impact the school district, and [Superintendent Andy Grzeskowiak] has generously spend time to share that information with me but his ability to accurately answer my question is hampered by a lack of information from the charter school board. Specifically, as I understand it, they have not released
needs to make a motion that is going to be illegal that forces changes to comply with ORS338 and that is prohibited in ORS325. You’re going to have to again say that this affiliation is going to be part of it, because the language is a standard preclusion in the contract.”
Chair Lacouture suggested that any contract written by the board would be in full compliance with all Oregon
enrollment projections and have not revealed the physical location of the charter school, information vital to accurately assess the effect of the charter school. He has expressed to me that from the information he does have, the effect of the charter school will most likely not be cost neutral to the district school, and will result in an increase in student teacher ratios.”
She said she feared that demands for a better school for a few students would result in a diminished school experience for the rest.
She suggested that those who want more options should move to a larger urban area that offers it.
“But if you love it here, as we do, then perhaps we could spend our money and our energy to work together to make our existing school as good as it can be,” she said.
Anika Miller said she has deep reservations about the proposed school and its affiliation with Hillsdale Christian College.
“I would urge caution in approving a charter aligned with a religious institution,” she said. “Our district lawyer has advised against such an alignment, citing potential legal ramifications of said affiliation. The fact that the proposers have since responded with an injunction against our district lawyer raises huge red flags.”
She said approving the school could leave the district open to legal action and costs.
“We simply cannot afford to take such risks with the well-being and futures of our children,” she said. She urged the board to carefully consider the proposal to ensure it’s done responsibly and within the
law, rather than denying the application and sending it to the state.
Prior to a vote, Grzeskowiak predicted the contract will go to the board for review and then to SVCS.
boundaries of the law. She also urged the board to contact the Oregon School Board Association for guidance, prior to approving the charter Michael Allen said he has been a substitute teacher in all grades as well as a parent and grandparent. Allen said while watching television news about the charter school, he heard proponent Aric Sneddon say that the issue of the term” affiliation” was a dead issue.
“I’m here tonight to say his assessment was dead wrong,” Allen said. “The term affiliating has several synonyms- among them, are bonding, allying, and associating. The issue is that the Siuslaw Valley Charter School is associated with Hillsdale College through their curriculum. It bonds with the philosophy of Hillsdale and allies with Hillsdale by taking advice regarding the hiring of faculty. Why is this an issue?
It’s because Hillsdale College is highly political, right wing conservative, religious college that supports Trump’s lie that he won the election and supports Ron DeSantis, the book-banning governor of Florida that is backed by Moms for Liberty. All this evidence appeared in the New York Times expose of how well Hillsdale president Larry Arnn has succeeded in embedding his college in the political turmoil. ‘We are in the world conquest business,’ he said in an online talk that Hillsdale posted in 2020, ‘and we have just one weapon, teaching.’” Allen said he does not want Hillsdale College exerting its political and religious influences on the community and its children through the charter school.
He said the board may then ratifiy it by vote and if signed by both parties, will be sent to Oregon Department of Education.

and was already a top tourism destination. The great sand was just icing on the cake.
Sandboarding Capital of the World
“Mayor Joe Henry proclaimed Florence as the Sandboarding Capital of the World in the first week of 2020 though I believe that status had unofficially already been determined years prior,” said Beale. “Sand Master Park is here, Dune Riders International (the governing body for competitive sandboarding) is here, as well as manufacturing of the world’s two top-selling sandboard brands,” he added.
“From its start as the world’s first sandboarding park, the sport has spread all over the world and continues to draw local and international tourists to Sand Master Park who want to learn to sandboard and to have the unique experience of doing so in Florence. More and more we see visitors who specifically come to Sand Master Park as they have heard and read
so much about it,” Beale explained.
Global Impact
Beale and his crew have represented Florence and Sand Master Park in nearly a dozen different countries around the world. Several world champions have come out of Florence and are often around the park to give lessons.
Venomous Sandboards, along with Monarch Sandboards, are the two brands Beale and his crew produce in Florence.
Asked about his impact on the sport, Beale estimates that about 95% of his visitors are from outside of Florence. “We truly get visitors from all over the world each year,” he said. His crew of competitors and employees have been featured worldwide in about 200 televised events from sandboarding events to TV commercials for a diversity of products (Chevy trucks is just one recent example).
“The development of Sand Sleds and sandboards made specifically for wet sand have been huge game changers for us and the sport in general,” he adds. “Sand sleds aren’t so intimidating to those who aren’t comfortable standing up. They take no skill, just sit down and ride. Wet boards (sandboards for wet sand) have allowed us to offer sandboarding year-round
regardless of the sand conditions. These have really set us apart from other destinations and our competitors.”
Beale and/or Sand Master Park have been featured in other programs or news stories from a regional sports highlight by Sinclair Broadcasting in Reno and shown throughout the Sinclair network to a recent Oregonian piece, a Travel Oregon feature, and on an episode of Guy Fieri’s Food Network program. Over the years they have also gained coverage in Esquire, Rolling Stone, Sports Illustrated (twice), ESPN (twice) National Geographic, Guinness Book of Records (three times), Surfer Magazine, Sand Sport Magazine (multiple times), Outside magazine, and Shape magazine.
“I remember one time we came out in the LA Times, NY Times, and Dallas Times all on the same day. One year we were featured on Yahoo Search’s Top 10 and that really boosted our fan base; we currently have a Facebook following well over 50,000,” he added.
Beyond the Boards
“When we opted to start pursuing sandboarding there were absolutely no products related to the sport, nothing. We had to start from scratch and develop each component to make sandboarding work. There was a lot of R&D to finally get it to the point where it was a success. Being based in Florence was a huge benefit as we had access to the dunes on a daily basis and plenty of people who ride our boards each day, so we know within a few hours what

“My fear is that this is going to just open us up back up to whose interpretation of ORS338 is what,” Director Sneddon said.
“My belief is that as we are writing the contract, it is our,
works and what does not,” Beale explained.
When not sandboarding or designing boards and sleds, Beale enjoys graphic design, photography, music, and cooking.
“This background has manifested in a number of areas: fine art, commercial art, wall murals, illustration, even functional art. The past few years I have revived my passion for building guitars. I see them as functional art. I take pride in anything I create but mainly see it as practice…honing my skills for perhaps something grander” he confesses.
“We are also thrilled at the success of the ‘Circles in the Sand’ event,” he adds regarding the beach carving, labyrinth building, interactive art event he sponsors each year at Heceta Beach featuring internationally renowned beach artist Denny Dyke. “It has been a wonderfully popular draw for locals and tourists and continues to attract more and more visitors to our beach each October. The fact that it is sand related made it an easy crossover for us to pursue. This is something everyone can enjoy and participate in. We feel really good about that.”
The Significance of the Florence Rhododendron Festival
“I see Rhody Fest, as we locals call it, as an excellent
and therefore the legal definition, per our legal counsel and Oregon Statute,” Lacouture responded.
“We’ve been given legal counsel on our end in a public meeting and between us, we don’t even all agree,” Sneddon replied.
“Our legal counsel’s council is what would be considered
social and entertainment interaction. People love it and have a good time with all the related activities. They look forward to it all year and are plenty excited when it arrives. It makes me happy for the crowds because I know they are enjoying it,” Beale said. Regarding being named grand marshal for this year’s parade, Beale admits he was caught off guard.
“I was very surprised. I would never have expected to be chosen and I’m not sure I deserve such an honor; but of course, I feel honored to represent. Humility keeps telling me this isn’t my place; this isn’t what I’m about. So much attention is a bit overwhelming. However, I will do my best to represent Florence as best I can. Florence deserves the best I have to offer so that is what I will give. I’m told this is the unofficial kickoff to tourist season in Florence and that tourism is a $320 million industry that employs about half of all workers in the area, so this is a huge honor for anyone.”
The Florence Rhododendron Festival is Oregon’s second-oldest floral festival, bested by only a year by the Portland Rose Festival, and sees thousands of visitors from around the state and across the country.
The 117th annual Florence Rhododendron Festival opens
in the writing of that contract … because we can’t do it any other way,” Lacouture said.
Director Pimlott stressed the importance of having legal counsel involved and Director Barnett noted the sizable responsibility that will be placed on the superintendent to write the contract.
the Saturday prior to the third full weekend in May (May 11, 2024) with the coronation of Queen Rhododendra, the King of the Coast, and their royal court at the Florence Events Center; followed by Thursday’s opening of the Davis Shows Carnival at the Port of Siuslaw property in Old Town. Saturdays traditionally feature the annual 5K Rhody Run and Walk, the junior parade and kids’ activities, the annual Rhody Classic Car Show ‘n’ Shine, and the Coast Radio Classic Car Cruise through Old Town. Sunday brings the grand floral parade down Highway 101 and into Historic Old Town at noon.
Throughout the event there will be a vendor’s fair in Old Town, a spectacular rhododendron show at the Florence Events Center, and live music, art, and other festivities and activities all over town.
“Generations of families have enjoyed the annual Florence Rhododendron Festival,” says Florence Area Chamber of Commerce president/CEO, Bettina Hannigan. “It’s a family tradition, an Oregon institution. Having Lon as our grand marshal is a tremendous addition to this year’s event.
The board voted five to two to produce a contract which meets and complies wholly with Oregon Revised Statutes regarding charter schools.
Editor’s note: The Siuslaw News spoke with SVCS representatives Aric Sneddon and Kay King about the charter school and that interview will appear in the March 6 edition.
C.R.O.W. is excited to present Disney’s “Newsies” April 12-21, 2024 at the Florence Events Center. There will be 6 public performances, Fridays and Saturdays at 7pm and Sundays at 2 pm.
“This is a wonderful show that reminds us to fight for what’s right, and to stand up for what we believe in,” said Artistic Director, Melanie Heard. Together, with a team of talented volunteers and production coordinators, Heard says she is excited to bring this mainstage extravaganza to the stage. “I’m most excited about the catchy music and big dance numbers,” said Heard. “Newsies is full of acrobatic, energetic, and over the top dancing, singing, and stage comradery. It’s a great show for C.R.O.W. because the core themes are working together, building important relationships, becoming strong in one’s own beliefs, and knowing right from wrong. These are things we want our kids to connect to.”
Set in turn-of-the century New York City, and based on the actual newsboy strike of 1899, “Newsies” is the tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy. Jack is the leader of a band of teenaged “newsies.” When Joseph Pulitzer and the other Titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the kids’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions. Based on the 1992 motion picture and inspired by true historical facts, “Newsies” features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken (“Little Shop of Horrors”) and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein (“Kinky Boots”). The show features the now classic songs “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” “King of New York,” and “Santa Fe.”
The cast is comprised of 57 youth participants, plus a few adults who have graciously stepped in to fill roles not suitable for kids. The cast features both brand new and returning talent, including talented familiar face, William Owens as “Jack.” William
dazzled audiences last year as “SpongeBob SquarePants” and returns this time in a very different type of role. New to the C.R.O.W. family this year is Adelaide Lake as “Katherine Plumber,” Jack’s love interest and headstrong journalist in her own right.
Other featured performers are Ezra King as “Race,” Henry Stone as “Henry,” Maggie Walls as “Les,” Andrew Hester as “Crutchie,” and many other rising stars. The role of “Medda Larkin” will be portrayed by the incomparable Maree Beers.
The “Newsies” production team is in the process of creating functional set pieces for painting and design, designing hundreds of period appropriate costumes and props, and teaching music, choreography, and blocking to cast members 5-6 days a week. The show is musically directed by Maree Beers, Assistant Directed by Genevieve Shahan, Assistant Musical directed by Angie Walls, and Assistant choreographed by Elyse Stewart.
Melanie Heard will Direct and Choreograph, returning for her 13th C.R.O.W. mainstage Spring youth musical. A list of show sponsors may be found on C.R.O.W.’s website, and sponsorship opportunities are available (and very much needed) through March 1st. For information, please visit www.crowkids.com/ programadsandsponsorships
Tickets are on sale now at the Florence Events Center box office. This year’s show will only be available to view in person, as livestreaming rights were unfortunately not available for this title. Emergency
selected County of Lane Tiffany Brown, a leader in emergency management in Oregon, has been chosen as the County’s new emergency manager and started in her new role earlier this month. “We are so fortunate to have Tiffany Brown joining Lane County as the new emergency manager,” said Lane County Policy Director
Stephen Adams. “She has been in the trenches of local response for many years and is well-positioned to continue to build our program here. Her vast experience in training, exercise, working with partners and the community will serve her – and our community – well.”Brown succeeds Patence Winningham, who served as the emergency manager for four years. Brown
was selected after a competitive national search. The position is responsible for planning and directing emergency management activities and projects; collaborating with partners in the government, private and non-profit sectors to conduct and coordinate countywide mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery activities; and updating and maintaining the County’s comprehensive Emergency Operations Plan. “It is very exciting to be back in the area and humbling to have been selected for the position,” said Tiffany Brown. “The ice storm created a unique opportunity for me to hit the ground running, and in coming months, I look forward to discovering other
ways that my experiences on the North Coast can benefit the residents and support our community partners in Lane County.”Brown served the last eight years as the emergency manager for Clatsop County. She brings a wealth of experience in local emergency management with a focus on regional preparedness, response, and mitigation related to catastrophic events – most notably the Cascadia Subduction Zone Earthquake. Related to her work on Cascadia preparedness, Brown has developed partnerships with state and federal military agencies that can also benefit Lane County’s coastal residents ahead of an earthquake. Prior to her role as Clatsop County’s emergency

Florence Events Center stayed packed for three days of live acoustic and bluegrass performed by eight groups.
The Winter Music Festival brought capacity crowds in from the rain for a series of warm, open shows by Henhouse Prowlers, Never Come Down, Beth Wood, Crying Uncle Bluegrass Band, Josh Goforth, Becky Buller and Ned Luberecki and Appalachian Roadshow. At times. Musicians spoke to the crowd like they were sharing a living room. Other times, the crowd lit in applause
Mitzi Hathaway, director of tourism development for the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce, recently returned from the Western Association of Chamber Executives (W.A.C.E.) academy graduation held in Garden Grove, California. She was one of 34 graduates from around the country.
The academy is a three-year program in professional development for chamber executives. In addition to attending 18 three-hour classes, graduates must complete additional independent study outside of the classroom including attendance at two W.A.C.E. conferences, two state conferences, local chamber engagement workshops, and W.A.C.E seminars on key topics such as communication, organizational skills, strategic planning, advocacy, leadership through disasters, social media, print and digital marketing, fundraising, sustainable events, economic development, sponsorship, stewardship, leadership, workforce development, community issues such as housing and childcare, effective board of directors building, economic development, and CEO training.
“We are very proud of Mitzi and what she has accomplished and added to her many strengths and talents for our community’s benefit,” said Chamber president/CEO
mid-song for high energy banjo, bass, guitar and violin solos.
Florence Arts, Culture and Entertainment (FACE) President Rachel Pearson said the event felt like a family reunion with people she had not yet met.
The first day of the 3-day Festival was all about the kids. Musicians played two separate shows, one of which filled the 440-seat house with kids from Mapleton, Reedsport and Florence elementary schools. With the second show of the day almost full, Pearson estimated that about 900 kids enjoyed the shows.
The rest of the festival was played to capacity crowds.
“Friday was a sellout,” Pearson said. “We had only eight tickets left.”
Saturday afternoon filled 400 seats, and Saturday night was also a complete sellout.
“That hasn’t happened since this began around 2003,” Pearson said, noting that the kids’ concert was devised even earlier as the Folk Fest, organized by herself, Lis Farm and Ann Rule. For the last seven years, the event has been sponsored by Florence Kiwanis Club.
Pearson urged people to check out the social media pages of the groups, who
posted endearing reviews of Florence and their time here. She said much of the advertising for the event came from the artist themselves via their social media.
“All but one are active on Facebook,” she said.
FACE’s next community event will be its yard sale at the Florence Entertainment Center on March 23 she said signups will be available in late February.
Editor’s note- Some readers have reported that they were unable to read the text of the Winter Music Fest story in the Feb. 7 issue, so it’s reprinted here.

Bettina Hannigan, herself a 2020 W.A.C.E Academy graduate.
“The W.A.C.E. Academy has equipped me with invaluable education, insights, and connections that are instrumental in driving the economic vitality of our community,” said Hathaway. “As we navigate the dynamic landscape of tourism development, the resources and network of Chamber professionals I’ve developed through the Academy are priceless. All the work we put into professional
development through our positions with the Chamber, we do out of service to our business community.”
Hathaway added her appreciation for Hannigan and the Chamber’s board of directors for “their unwavering belief in my dedication and commitment to professional excellence.” Following Hannigan’s example, Hathaway’s next step in professional development will take her to the Institute of Organizational Management (IOM), a fouryear program for non-profit
organizations; but because of her W.A.C.E. completion, she will complete her accreditation in two years through the US Chamber of Commerce program.
“I was recently asked by a local business leader why the chamber’s board provides all this professional development training. I said, ‘to be better servants,’” Hannigan
explained. “In our roles with the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce we will continue representing the business interests of Florence, the coast, and rural communities.

The Florence Indoor Yard Sale will return to the Florence Events Center (FEC) on Saturday, March 23, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This year, admission is just $2. Parking is free.
“The FEC’s nearly 8000 sq. ft. flat floor and lobby will be teeming with treasures and bursting with bargains for things you didn’t know you needed until you found them,”
says Rachel Pearson, president of FACE (Florence Arts, Culture & Entertainment) the all-volunteer nonprofit that produces the event and supports the venue.
“Annually, this is a huge sale. Having so many vendors in one location builds more fun and excitement than having a private sale in your own yard. We usually have 45 to 50 vendors and more than 400 people attending, many
of whom drive over from the valley or from up and down Highway 101 to shop our oneday sale. Reviews by our vendors and shoppers are always very positive,” Pearson adds. “The annual Florence Indoor Yard Sale is a hit with locals and bargain hunters from all over the region, both for selling and buying, and a bit of good-natured haggling.”
Applications and more information on renting a
vendor’s booth are available at FlorenceArts.org. Individuals, civic clubs, churches, nonprofits, neighborhood groups, and commercial retailers are all welcome.
“Shoppers will find just about everything—from $1 bargain items to rare vintage glass, home decor like table linens, furniture, and appliances; along with clothing, shoes, and one-of-a-kind jewelry; as well as music, books, posters, and vinyl LPs for
inspiration and entertainment,” explains Pearson.
“One of the best parts of the Florence Indoor Yard Sale is that it is open rain or shine. The Florence Events Center is an excellent venue to accommodate many shoppers and sellers and keep them dry in the case of rainy weather. You also can count on hot coffee waiting for you inside to get your day of shopping or selling started,” she added, “And, the excellent
Florence Events Center Catering Service will be open for hot or cold drinks, refreshments, and light meals.”
ABOUT FACE:
The Famous Florence Indoor Yard Sale is produced by the 501 (c) (3) nonprofit Florence Arts, Culture & Entertainment (FACE), an all-volunteer membership organization that helps fund capital improvements and performance grants at the venue. FACE’s many community events like the Winter Music Festival, Florence Festival of Books, Florence Indoor Yard Sale, art gallery galas, and others are the group’s primary fundraisers. In recent years these have resulted in many thousands of dollars in performance grants for local nonprofit performing arts groups, and funding of the FEC’s needs including a video security system, upright piano, professional quality wireless microphones and other stateof-the-art audio and lighting equipment. For more information on FACE’s events, or how to join or volunteer, contact Pearson at 541-991-8811.

SIUSLAW NEWS STAFF
The 26th annual Home and Garden Show promises a lot of new and interesting vendors, exhibits and products, but it also features something you may not find at other shows; Vendors and exhibitors who are truly happy to be there.
Jon Thompson, show director, said vendors often comment after shows that the Home and Garden Show in Florence is a favorite for several reasons.
“That is an overriding comment we get on a pretty consistent basis,” he said. “I will add that one of the big differences is that when you go to county home show, there’s a lot more vendors there and there’s a lot more people. The crowds are just flowing by these vendors and maybe one or two will stop at a vendor when they go by out of this long stream of people. The people that come to our show, because it’s a more intimate show with a limited amount, they stop at the majority of the booths and are sincerely interested in the products and services. They do a good job of shopping the whole show and visiting with the vendors, and I think the vendors really feel that vibe coming from the crowd here.”
Thompson said crowd numbers have been consistently in the 2,200 to 2,500 range since the early years.
“This is our 26th annual Home and Garden Show,” he said. “We started back when the Florence Event Center opened… and we’ve had strong crowds ever since.”
He said that while there is occasional turnover in vendors, those who continue to show up are always excited to be here.
“This year we have at least 15 vendors that we didn’t have before,” he said, “and we have about 40 vendors.” He said that since the Florence Event Center is smaller than most large commercial venues, organizers are careful not to duplicate any exhibits or features.
“We’re always wanting a fresh show,” he said, “so it actually works out pretty well with the amount of turnover we get each year.” He said some of the vendors also do a lot of shows in the northwest, including one who has been doing shows for decades across the country.
“I was visiting with him the other day and I said, ‘I think we have one of the best small market home shows in the state.’ He said, ‘I think you have one of the best small home shows in the country,’” Thompson said.
Thompson said that other Home and Garden shows around the country and state have thinned out over the years, estimating that only two or three still exist on the coast.
“ … and we’re one of them,” he said.
“We’re still drawing healthy crowds, our vendors are still doing very well at the shows, and I think it’s because of the people in Florence, the demographic. They’re friendly and they’re interested in the new products and services that come in so they spend money. My vendors continue to do well here with the show.”
Thompson said he and organizers go out of their way to look for products and services that can’t typically be found in or around Florence.
“I think that’s kind of a key for us,” he said, adding that attendees will also get to enjoy sampling of some of the food products.
While many come in from other area, Thompson expressed appreciation for the local vendors who also take part.
“We have some vendors that give out freebies,” he said. “We do a grand prize drawing at the end, which is a minimum $500 cash giveaway for attendees. Then we have some of the vendors will do demonstrations in their booths for people which is always very interesting.”
When asked why someone with no interest in Home and Gardens should attend the show, Thompson laughed.
“Home and Garden is a pretty broad category, so we have things, home decor items for instance. Some people are selling smaller retail items for around the house, tools and cookware,” he said. “You don’t have to be into Home Improvement necessarily or building a new house, but we do have everything from roofers and windows and contractors and landscapers and pavement maintenance. We have Blue Star Gas coming in, we have electricians and we have a lot of stuff that are standard home improvement or construction of a new home items but— you don’t necessarily have to be doing a big project to benefit from it.” Thompson added that a spa and sauna company will be involved in the show this year.
Asked why the show has been so popular for so long, Thompson said, “I think, variety.
I think the atmosphere of the Event Center and the interaction between the residents here which is cited by our vendors quite often people in Florence are very interested in the products and services and they are very nice people, so that kind of sums up why we’ve had a good successful show for 25 years so far.”
Doors Open Friday, March 1st from Noon to 6 p.m. and Saturday, March 2nd, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.. As you enter the 26th Annual Florence Home and Garden Show, you will be greeted by the Florence Garden Club who have been a fixture of the show since its inception. “Medicine is the Mission” at Metolius Hemp Co. where we help people by providing them with premium, organic, hand-crafted, CBD, CBG, & CBN wellness products.
We are a small, family owned, CBD focused company that started as a group of hemp farmers. We quickly realized we could bring much more to the CBD movement. So, on 5/20/20 we formed Metolius Hemp Co. with a vision for the future, and a commitment to the hard work it would take to become leaders within the CBD industry
Our motto “From Seed to Satisfaction” means we grow our own hemp here in Bend on 4 acres of organic farmland using only Oregon CBD seed bank genetics. Once harvested, the hemp is processed at our custom facility, also located in the heart of Bend. It is also here that we use our proprietary enhancement processes to handcraft all of our products which directly respond to what we see as the 5 main wellness issues that our clients deal with on a daily basis:
• Stress & Anxiety: River Dips. 100mg CBD lip pouches
Sleep: River Dreams. CBD & CBN mixable sleep powder
• Pain & Inflammation: River
Springs. Whole Plant CBD & CBG topical pain roller and sticks, River Caps 100mg CBD capsules

The Scentsy Diffuser instantly fills the air with world-class fragrant all-natural and essential Scentsy Oils, while Scentsy’s flagship product line of scented, wax Scentsy Bars heated in handcrafted warmers provides a safe, personal alternative to traditional candles. Additional product lines include on-the-go fragrances, laundry care, inventive cleaning solutions and luxurious personal care products for women, men and kids — all featuring exclusive Scentsy fragrance. A wickless candle is a highly fragrant wax bar that is warmed to release fragrance into the air. Because the wax is gently warmed rather than burned, it can hold more fragrance oil than a traditional candle. And because there is no flame, there is no smoke or soot. Scentsy wickless candles — Scentsy Bars — are a safer alternative to traditional candles.

Why Choose Us for Your Security Camera Needs?
J&M Low Voltage Inc. understands that each home and business has different security system needs. We take pride in finding the best possible solution for each customer while keeping costs affordable. To help ensure that you get the best possible results, we take the time to understand your specific security needs in order to provide the camera system that works best for you and your budget.
Do security cameras deter crime? Studies do show that having a surveillance camera system can cut down on your risk of home invasion drastically Money invested in a security camera system or doorbell camera is one of the most effective ways to protect your home and family from criminals. As a homeowner, you may benefit from
using it to improve safety and enhance your overall peace of mind. Darkness provides cover for theft, trespassing, and other crimes.
When incidents occur at night, conventional cameras without supplemental lighting miss or lose critical details. Infrared illumination brings out more details in nighttime lighting conditions, however, it provides only black and white images. Colors missing from the footage makes it difficult to provide a positive identification. With ColorVu cameras, the true color of a person’s clothing or a vehicle will be clearly visible in live viewing mode and in recorded video footage—during daytime, nighttime, and poor lighting conditions. Stop by and visit with us at the Florence Home & Garden Show, always know what’s going on at your house!

Vacuity Tech
Founded in 2020, we’ve had over 20 years’ previous experience in helping people clean up their environment at home and their air quality. When we found technology that could drastically improve indoor air quality, we set up this new company to focus on spreading the word. Our focus is in visibly demonstrating to you in your home how this all works.
We offer a variety of professional affiliations that help you achieve your goals of clean air. Sometimes you need to kick start the process and do a deep cleaning of carpets, or walls, or ceilings. Especially if you’ve had
fire or smoke damage, or just longtime neglect. We have researched the market for reliable affiliates and won’t hesitate to refer you to them if you need something before our system takes over.
Our units can do more than just clean air. They can clean wooden floors, ceilings, and carpeted rooms as vacuums do, but they can do more. Because of the variable settings, you can also clean sensitive rugs, couches, bed spreads and other places the air has fallen into. You not only need to clean the air, but also what is beneath it.
We’ve worked with small tiny homes to mansions. If it’s got air in the room, we can improve it and you will see amazing results that can help your asthma, COPD, COVID conditions and more.
