Three Rivers Foundation gives over $720,000 in grants to 95 local nonprofits
Three Rivers Foundation, established by the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua, and Siuslaw Indians as the charitable arm of the Three Rivers Casino Resort, proudly announced the award of over $720,000 to support the missions of 95 nonprofit organizations, several of which are in the Florence area.
Three Rivers Foundation distributed funds to a diverse range of nonprofits in sectors ranging from healthcare and
education to combating food insecurities and enriching the lives of children.
“It makes my heart feel good. It’s just awesome that we can help these folks make an impact on their organizations and their communities,” said Chief Doug Barrett, Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua, and Siuslaw Indians.
“We got a $10,000 check for our Natural Resource program at Siuslaw High School for drones,” said
Amy Tregoning, Siuslaw High School teacher. We are teaching kids how to use them because they are being used increasingly in the natural resource field—think wildfires and population densities. We hope to train our students and get them to take their pilot’s license before they leave high school so that they can start a career a bit further ahead of everyone else.”
“It’s massive; the amount that Three Rivers Foundation can contribute to everyone
in the local community is immense. We couldn’t get nearly as much done as we have without these types of contributions,” said Stephen Beale, Florence Food Share Operations Manager. The Florence Food Share was granted $10,000.

State Police reported that a Springfield woman died in a single vehicle crash that detoured traffic on Highway 126 for about six hours on May 19.
According to OSP, first responders were dispatched to an area near mile marker 21.5 at about 2:30 p.m. for a report of a singe-vehicle crash.
“The preliminary investigation indicated an eastbound Honda CRV, operated by Joella Ann Ewing (83) of Eugene, left the highway for unknown reasons, struck a tree, and landed in an adjacent
creek,” according to OSP.
“The operator of the Honda (Ewing) was injured as a result of the crash and transported to an area hospital. A passenger in the Honda, Ruth Anne Romoser (80) of Springfield, was declared deceased at the scene.” The cause of the crash was still under investigation as of May 22.
OSP was assisted by the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, Eugene Police Department, Western Lane Medics and Fire, Lane Rural Fire, and ODOT.

A recent boom in the purple sea urchin population off the southern Oregon Coast appears to have had an indirect and negative impact on the gray whales that usually forage in the region, a new study shows.
When urchin numbers rise, the spiky marine invertebrates can devour kelp forests that are a critical habitat for zooplankton, the tiny aquatic organisms that are the primary prey of many marine animals. Damaged kelp forests lead to reductions in zooplankton, and with fewer zooplankton to feed on, gray whales spend less time foraging there, researchers with Oregon State University’s Marine Mammal Institute found.
“This study shows the cascading impacts of a change in the coastal ocean ecosystem in a way that has not been documented before,” said the study’s lead author, Lisa Hildebrand, a doctoral candidate in the Marine Mammal Institute’s Geospatial Ecology of Marine Megafauna Laboratory. “These impacts extend indirectly to a top predator, the gray whale, and it affects them in a negative way.”
The study was recently published in Nature Scientific Reports. Co-authors are Associate Professor Leigh Torres, who leads the GEMM Lab at Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, and researchers Solène Derville and Ines Hildebrand of Torres’ lab.
Sea urchin populations began to explode off the coast of Oregon following the Sea Star Wasting Syndrome pandemic that began in 2013. The pandemic led to an estimated
90% decline in sunflower sea stars, which are now listed as critically endangered.
Historically off the coast of Oregon, sunflower sea stars have been one of two natural predators of sea urchin. The other is the sea otter, which was wiped out of Oregon waters by fur trappers more than 100 years ago.
“In ecology, we think about the important role of redundancy in an ecosystem,” Torres said. “This is a good example of an ecosystem that lacks redundancy due to the loss of sea otters. The system could not sustain itself without both the otters and the sea stars.”
Sea urchins are naturally occurring in kelp forests, but the decline in sunflower sea stars meant there was no predator to keep the population in check. The researchers began to see the effects of that change in the ecosystem during their annual gray whale monitoring research in Port Orford.
Torres and her team have been monitoring gray whales and their environment in that region since 2015 as part of a 10-year study of the foraging ecology of gray whales in the Pacific Coast Feeding Group. This small subset of whales frequents near-shore waters along the Oregon and Pacific Northwest coast rather than traveling to the Arctic to forage each summer.
The research team, which includes local high school students and college undergraduates, spends six weeks each summer at OSU’s Port Orford Field Station. The location is ideal because there’s a large, protected cove that allows researchers to monitor whales easily from shore and also gives them access to the water, where they can
collect zooplankton samples by kayak and use GoPro cameras to monitor underwater conditions.
“The overall goal of the research is to better understand what gray whales are feeding on near shore,” Lisa Hildebrand said. “We first started to see these dramatic images of sea urchins feeding on the kelp in 2018 and even more in 2019.”
The sea urchin-kelp dynamic has been well-studied, but this is the first study that looks beyond that relationship to the impacts on zooplankton that inhabit the kelp forest and their predators – the gray whales.
The researchers found that as the kelp was damaged or destroyed, fewer zooplankton, and in particular the tiny mysid shrimp that make up a big portion of the gray whale’s diet, remained in the near-shore waters. With fewer zooplankton in the area, the gray whales spent less time foraging there.
“In 2020 and 2021, we saw fewer whales and the whales we saw spent less time in that area,” Torres noted. “We also noted declines in gray whales’ body condition during these years while conducting other field studies off the coast of Newport.”
The researchers can’t say how exactly the decline in kelp leads to a decline in zooplankton, but they suspect the zooplankton may be using the kelp as a type of shelter, and it may be that zooplankton are retained within kelp beds because tides and currents are weaker inside these areas than outside, Hildebrand said.
The study highlights the ripple effects of ocean warming due to climate change, the researchers noted.
“Marine heatwaves and warmer ocean waters likely worsened the Sea Star Wasting Syndrome pandemic and young kelp tends to grow better in colder water. As a result, there was less drift kelp available for urchins to feed
on in the nearshore system,”
Lisa Hildebrand said.
In 2023, the researchers noted that the region showed signs of recovery, with fewer urchins and more kelp, zooplankton and whales. These recent observations may be signs of the ecosystem returning to conditions favorable for kelp growth.
“We think and we hope this system is recovering and we’ll continue to monitor it
through our research,” Torres said. “Oregonians love having gray whales feeding along our coast and they need a healthy habitat to ensure that continues.”
The Marine Mammal Institute is part of Oregon State’s College of Agricultural Sciences and is based at Hatfield Marine Science Center. The study was funded in part by Oregon Sea Grant.

I had a great time at the Rhody Days parade riding my e-bike with the Emerald Valley EV Club and their fabulous electric cars. We were led by three members of Florence Indivisible who provided us with signs that read they “proudly support climate action.”
This was my second year riding my E-bike in the parade. Last year I was the only one riding an electric bike. This year the Florence E-bike club participated with many e-bike riders, some with fat tires for riding in the dunes. Johnston Motor
Company drove the Ford Lightning, an all-electric truck that could accelerate from 0 to 60 in 3.8 seconds. I am very pleased to see how much we are moving toward electrifying our transportation. It saves money in the long run and helps keep our environment clean and healthy. E-bikes our gaining popularity in our community. I see them everywhere. It would be good if our city follows the “Good Vibes” theme of our Rhododendron Festival by investing in multi-path lanes throughout the city and surrounding area.
The highlight of my ride was when a three year old girl came up to my E-bike and attempted to attach a colorful necklace to my basket. In many ways it will be the young who most benefit from the climate actions we take today.

I was saddened to read about the city’s decision to sell the property west of Greenwood St. for development. This is a very unique property in that it contains trees
over 100 years old and native Rhododendrons that are 20 feet tall or more. It is unique in that there are few places in the city of Florence, if any, with these characteristics. It seems to me that being as how the city of Florence calls itself the city of rhododendrons, it deserves to be retained in its current condition. I wish the city would have requested public input on this prior to making the sale. Florence citizens might like to take a look at it before it is forever gone.

Riders return for Rhody Days
By TONY REED Siuslaw News
Motorcycles lined both sides of Bay Street, far outnumbering cars over Rhododendron Days weekend.
The three-day event has been popular with riders for many years, bringing hundreds of bikes to Florence every year.
Mayor Rob Ward said riders have been arriving for
Rhody Days as long as he can remember.
“..And we got here in 1974,” he said. “I don’t know when it got started and it’s been a popular thing for them to do. For the most part, we won’t see that many bikes again in Florence until next years’ Rhododendron Festival.”
Looking at the bikes’ license plates and riders’ jackets, it was obvious that
riders came from miles around, and some, from other states.
“It’s great for the economy,” he laughed, noting that police reported no major issues and the overall number of riders was about the same as last year.
Bay Street was closed to cars, but not motorcycles during the parade through Old Town on Sunday.

This fun, exciting and of course, colorful event will start May 31 with Drag Queen Bingo and an evening dance party. On Saturday, a panel discussion will look at Queer through the Ages. There will be games under the big top, dinner and a show, and Circus-theme Prom! Sunday will feature a Puppy Parade, fundraiser dunk tank and a barbecue hosted by the Yachats Community Presbyterian Church. Check out the local vendor market for items you surely won’t find anywhere but Yachats. Look for the Community Commons, 441 Highway 101 and admission is free. Daytime activities are kid friendly, but parental discretion is recommended after 8 p.m. at the Prom. For more information, email info@yachatspride.org
sees the raising of the banners along the highways and in Old Town as an extension of the existing Florence marketing messages of ‘Shop, Eat, Stay, and Play here in Oregon’s Coastal Playground.’ It’s a smart investment and tourism asset addition,” said Florence city manager Erin Reynolds when the program launched.
“It’s been a very careful, deliberate, collaborative process and we are thrilled with the results.” explained Hannigan. “We were excited to launch—and sustain—a program that catches drivers’ attention, gets them to slow down a little, and helps direct them to stop, shop, eat, play, and stay here in Florence.
Summer institute a go
Siuslaw Middle School is full STEAM ahead with it’s Summer Institute! This program is June 18-July 25 from 8:30-12:15 on MondayThursday. It is open to students entering 6th grade through current 8th graders. The activities will focus on science, technology, engineering, art, math, and literacy. Breakfast and lunch will be offered. Registration forms are available at the Middle School office and on the Siuslaw School District website. The deadline to register is Friday, June 7th.
“Visitors will see our obvious community pride and understand that there is a bounty of fun things to do in and around Florence. They’ll see why this is indeed Oregon’s Coastal Playground,” added Hannigan, “We’re proud of the partnership between the Chamber, the City, Central Lincoln, the businesses, civic clubs, and individuals that have invested in this program.”
The newest banners went up just before the 117th Annual Florence Rhododendron Festival.
For more information on how to join or support the Chamber, contact Hannigan at 541-997-3128.

banners
“I drew it all out on a CAD (Computer Aided Drafting) program, the whole setup from 27th and Oak down to Highway 101 and put all the sizes in there in order to make sure they fit,” he laughed, “but some people don’t know how to measure so I added five feet to each one.”
Dan’s wife Teresa coordinated the many kids who carried banners in the parade.
Dan said the day of the parade, the entire crew of Hyak, a local ISP, was on hand to help with traffic and manage the parade at turn locations.
“That was probably 20 people they brought,” he said, noting that some of his own construction personnel also arrived to help.
Asked about police and fire departments’ involvement in traffic control, Dan said a meeting took place with city and law enforcement officials two months ago.
“They handle that part,” he said.
“I hope everyone had a great time and enjoyed the parade and I hope I keep doing this,” he laughed.
“Mitzi says if I ever quit, she’ll quit, but I think we have it down pat now.”
He said the common response is that this has been the best parade yet.
“That makes me happy,” he said.
Clearing a path
Diverting traffic from four to two lanes of almost a mile of Highway 101, while keeping traffic from entering the parade route at every block also took great effort.
Florence Police Chief Jon Pitcher concurred, saying planning begins several weeks before the event.
For the parade, help came from several agencies and departments, including Lane County Sheriff’s Office, County Parole and Probation and Oregon State Police.
Several fire engines and personnel from area departments were on hand to help with traffic control while remaining ready to deal with emergency calls around the city.
Parade watchers likely noticed two motorcycle officers that were provided by Eugene Police Department.
“They’ve sent two motorcycles over for the last few years and it’s a huge help to keep the whole system going, especially on that merge area,” he said. “Their help is unbelievable.”
Some law enforcement personnel from county departments remained in Florence for the entire festival.
“It was a good weekend,” he said. “We had a few incidents but nothing major. Overall, it went well.”
Public Works Director
Mike Miller said the logistics of putting on Rhododendron Days have been in the works for weeks and his crews made sure the town was ready for a lot of guests. He said local streets were swept and parks were cleaned and trimmed as well. While the City usually does other work in the spring to freshen up, the weather broke in time to get those jobs done just before the festival.
Around town, several art displays were erected and the city worked with Rotary Club to refill the bark in the triangular island at 126 and 101 Miller also mentioned that several members of City staff worked on their own time to build, paint and decorate the City’s float for the parade.
Public Works was responsible for the cones and signs during the parade, as well as barricades in Old Town to allow for the Vendor’s Fair.
From the Chamber
Mitzi Hathaway, the Chamber’s Director of Tourism Development, said planning for this year’s parade started in December when requests were made for volunteers. Work picked up speed in February with the development of a spreadsheet and coordination with Dan Lofy.
“Many pages of permits/ maps must be submitted and approved by ODOT, the City and any facility that we will be using,” Hathaway said, “along with ordering trash disposal units and the oh-so-important porta potties.”
More invitations were sent out to previous entrants and requests more went out to the community requesting use of convertible cars, and drivers.

“We also invite a Color Guard unit to lead the parade,” she said.
“Councilman Robert Carp took on this task, inviting our local post 3232 of Veterans of Foreign Wars to do the honors this year.”
Hathaway then drew out graphics for everything from banners to door clings and sent them to printers. Requests went out to area schools for banner carriers since about 75 were needed.
“A couple months prior to the Rhododendron Festival, the City of Florence organizes a meeting between the Chamber of Commerce, Public Works Department, Police Department, Fire and Emergency Services and community partners such as Habitat for Humanity to go over the details of the parade route and activities leading up to it,” Hathaway said, noting that hundreds of hours of communication and participation are needed to make the parade happen.
“Bettina Hannigan finds parade judges and creates the judging sheets,” Hathaway said.”Board Chair Al Rojas put up the judges tent and chairs while Visitor Center Manager Lisa Brandow made sure they were supplied with snacks, drinks and anything else they may need.”
The chamber then worked with Coast Radio to set up the live broadcast and more calls were necessary since many entrants did not fill out their applications fully.
Then, after five months of planning, the effort hit the ground as a parade with the help of many volunteers, local businesses and coordinators.
“These volunteers were crucial to the success of this year’s Rhody Days; Board Chair Al Rojas, Board Member Angela Nelson, Board member Neil Ecker, Board Chair Elect Beth Rudometkin, Ambassadors Steve & Margie Shrum, Deb King and Sharon Mason. All went well
Mayor Rob Ward said he felt the event and parade went very well, adding that a frequent comment from visitors was how nice Florence looked from the River to Highway 126. He credited former mayor Joe Henry and the City for a previous revisioning project that made many improvements, including the removal of utility poles and overhead wires.
City Manager Erin Reynolds said she’s grateful and proud of the work done by Public Works personnel to keep Florence clean and orderly for the event.
“I am grateful for the FPD and their public safety leadership in coordinating and working long hours with other agencies to keep us all safe through so we can all focus on having fun,” she said, “and mostly a great big thank you to the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce for producing and managing yet again another fabulous Rhododendron Festival!”
She said that while the Chamber does the lion’s share of work for Rhododendron Days, the City does all the permitting for temporary exhibitors, manages street closures, works with an events manager on all the events, manages and coordinates partners.
“There are always things on the side we need to work through,” she said, mentioning carnival big rig parking, multiple exhibits at the events center and more.
“You name it, we’re out there being a part of the community, enjoying the event as well as supporting it to make sure it’s successful,” she said.

the first weeknight was lightly-attended and ended in fog, things quickly picked up the next day at the Davis Shows Carnival in the Port of Siuslaw. Kids lined up for rides and cars were parked for blocks around the Port all weekend for rides, games, carnival food and to just hang out with friends. Several rides offered views over the rooftops in Old Town before dropping, swinging or tilting back to ground level. Meanwhile, people shopped in booths at the location, walked along the port boardwalk or made the trek into Old Town to shop. While an exact number was unavailable, Chamber staff reported that the carnival sold more than twice the amount of passes as last year.

Kale Jensen placed second in the long jump for the Vikings
By JOHN GUNTHER Country Media Inc.
Siuslaw’s boys entered the state track meet with visions of a second straight team title.
A disappointing Thursday ended up costing the Vikings, who ultimately came up just short of champion Valley Catholic and Vale, bringing home the third-place trophy.
Veteran coach Chris Johnson said he gave his team a motivational speech before the second day of the competition, essentially saying the Vikings were out-competed on Thursday and had a chance for redemption Friday.
The Vikings performed well the final day, he said.
“We made it interesting,” Johnson said.
Siuslaw entered the last event with a chance to win the team title, trailing Valley Catholic by a single point.
But the Valiants won the relay with a new meet record time of 3:23.49 and Vale was second while the Vikings finished fourth in 3:28.51, also behind Santiam Christian, which had won the first heat of the event. That left Valley Catholic in first place with 74 points, Vale in second (69) and Siuslaw in third (68) in the final standings.
Siuslaw did win a pair of titles Friday. Kale Jenson took the high jump, clearing 6-0 ¾. And the quartet of Will Johnson, Wesley Nicholls, Derrick Vanduch and Raymundo Brito Xilot won the 4x100 relay in 43.84. The 4x400 relay included Nicholls, Vanduch, Brito Xilot and Dylan Jensen. Vanduch (40.80) and Kale Jensen (41.01) were fifth and sixth in the 300 hurdles and
Kale Jensen also was seventh in the 110 hurdles (16.63). Nicholls was sixth in the 400 (52.43) and Johnson was sixth in the triple jump (41-10).
On Thursday, Kale Jensen was second (21-0 ¾) and Johnson fourth (20-9 ¼) in the long jump.
And in the pole vault, Justin Allen was fourth, Dylan Jensen fifth and Johnson sixth, all clearing 12-7 ¼. Maximus Reynolds was sixth in the shot put (42-11).
But Siuslaw missed chances for more points in a number of events either by athletes missing the finals or placing lower than projected.
Siuslaw’s girls had a handful of placers over the two days.
The Vikings got secondand sixth-place finishes
of 35-4 and 34-1 ¼, respectively.
Lacouture was fifth in the javelin (109-3). Maya Wells was eighth in the 1,500 (5:07.10) and

Mapleton Schools Cultivating Farm to School Success
Mapleton School District has been chosen to participate in the 2024-25 K-12 Farm to School Institute, a year-long professional development program supporting the expansion of robust farm to school initiatives.
As part of the Institute, the district will develop a comprehensive Farm to School Action Plan through extensive community engagement.
“We are thrilled for this opportunity to build on our existing gardening program and take our farm to school efforts to the next level,” said Sue Wilson, Superintendent. “Connecting students to fresh, local foods while providing hands-on learning experiences is key to supporting the whole child - and to building a stronger, healthier, more connected Mapleton community.”
Mapleton began a gardening project-based learning program in 2022-2023, with gardens started at the Senior High and maintained by middle and high school students in the gardening class.
“Throughout the last several months of this project, I have observed how this garden has affected my classmates. We have all learned so much. All the way from plant companions, to time management and

While one wouldn’t expect visitors to say they came to Rhododendron Days solely for one exhibit, Quilt Shows organizers said it was the case this year.
“We even had people say they came to Rhody Days just for the Quilt Show,”
said Sandy Davidson, of Rhododendron Quilt Guild (RQG). “That amazed me because I figured we were an offshoot, but they came last year and said they specifically came back again to see what we’d been doing.”
According to Davidson, the show brought over 400 people into Old School Furniture over the course of the festival.
hard work. This garden has been nothing short of spectacular,” said Tiyler Gloe, graduating senior.
Over the coming months, the district’s farm to school team will gather input from students, families, school staff and community to shape program goals and activities. This engagement ensures the Action Plan reflects the priorities of Mapleton’s diverse community.
Quilt show a big hit
“They loved the style and they love going through Old School Furniture,” she said. The show was free to view but RQG also received several donations and people appeared to enjoy the aesthetic of a
furniture store inside an old schoolhouse.
“It was wonderful,” she said. “It was over double what we had last year. Everyone enjoyed the show and we got lots of complements.”
The Farm to School Institute will allow the district to significantly increase procurement of locally-grown foods for cafeterias, integrate more food education into classroom curriculum, and develop community partnerships with local farms and food organizations.
The Institute model brings together teams from 10 districts for coaching, training and collaboration as they
implement robust farm to school programming integrating cafeterias, classrooms and communities. Mapleton’s selection recognizes the district’s commitment to providing innovative educational experiences that prepare students for success. The Farm to School Action Plan will build on this vision while nourishing minds and bodies.
There were 78 quilts on display, made by local artisans.
“We’re going to do it again next year,” Davidson said. “People really enjoyed it and said they’re looking forward to coming back, so we’re
going to be there, as long as Old School Furniture allows us to do it. They enjoy and we do, too.”

Parade was a cuteness overload PHOTOS BY TONY REED A short and cute parade up Oak Street May 18, led by fire engines carrying Rhododendron Days Princes and princesses, had folks along the parade route saying “awww” as it passed. Rhody Run brings over 300 competitors to Florence
By TONY REED Siuslaw News
The Florence Events Center parking lot looked like an aerobics class early May 18 as runners did stretches and warmups led by Jim Mitchell of Coastal Fitness. However, when the clock struck nine, the shoes hit the pavement as 311 runners and walkers headed south on Quince Street.
Just 17 minutes and 3 seconds later, Jai Shah, 21, from Keyna but living in Eugene, was the first male runner to cross the finish line He was followed by Chad Hughes, age 20, at 17:18.9 and Brayden Linton, age 18 of Florence, at 17:52. Corduroy Holbrook, 18, of Florence was the first female runner to return, posting a time of 22:11, followed by Abby Jones, age 16 of
Florence, at 23.12.6 and Ariel Kramer, age 37, of Florence with a time of 23.40.6.
Other Oldest In the 10 and under William Shamne, of Florence logged a 23 minute, 20 second time while Josephine Stole returned with a 31:01 time. Incorrectly noted later as being in the 90+ age range, Gladys Higginbotham, 85, finished in 58 minutes and 55 seconds, placing 234th of 283 finishers.
Due to construction happening on Rhododendron Drive, the race route was reduced from its usual 10k to a 5k (3.1 mile) race.
Janelle Morgan, Executive Director at Florence Habitat for Humanity said the event was excellent this year and officials hope to be able to return to a 10k race in 2025.
“It all depends on the road construction completion,” she said.
Asked what went into the planning and execution of this years race, Morgan said over 20 volunteers worked up to and on the day of the race. She said a committee worked behind the scenes to do logistics and choose colors and designs for shirts and promotional materials. Others
helped to coordinate traffic, place signs and look out for runners’ safety.
She noted that this is the 45th year of the Rhody Run, which is a sanctioned event. Winners in several categories took home handmade medals and a variety of local gift certificates. Of the 311
