Former Marshfield standout wrestler Wittlake injured in accident BY JOHN GUNTHER For The World
Marshfield wrestling great Travis Wittlake Jr. is facing a long recovery after a freak accident left him with several fractures last weekend. Wittlake was working underneath his truck on Jan. 7 when a jack the vehicle was resting on gave way, crushing him beneath the vehicle. Wittlake suffered a compound fracture in his leg, multiple other breaks and compression fractures in his lumbar vertebrae. He was airlifted from the South Coast to Salem for emergency treatment. The injuries were not life-threatening, but he will face a long road to recovery. “We are grateful for the care that Travis has
received so far and will be here to support him during his recovery,” Oregon State coach Chris Pendleton said on social media. “On behalf of Travis, his family and our athletic department, we appreciate the support and well wishes from Beaver Nation and the wrestling community. We wish Travis a speedy recovery.” Wittlake’s father, Travis Wittlake Sr., said doctors have suggested a recovery time of nine months to a year if all goes well, with lots of therapy. He said the family has been humbled by the community support, including a GoFundMe account started for Wittlake. Wittlake continued on page 3
