Neon sign lights up downtown North Bend

The City of North Bend is shining brighter thanks to the Liberty Theatre’s new gigantic neon blade sign.

The community came out in droves to support the Little Theatre on the Bay as they officially lit up the sign, which adorns the historic building on the south end of town.

The celebration coincided with the theatre’s opening night of "Other Desert Cities" on Friday, Jan. 19.

Oregon Bay Area Beautification group hosts appreciation event

Members of the Oregon Bay Area Beautification group recently came together to recognize their volunteers and celebrate their accomplishments.

The volunteer appreciation event on Saturday, Jan. 20 in the Coos Bay Public Library’s Myrtlewood Room included soup for “souper volunteers,” an awards ceremony and an opportunity to socialize with OBAB leaders and volunteers.

Most of all, OBAB leaders said the event was a time to reflect on the impact the local

Performing arts academy expands from Coquille to Coos Bay

A dance and gymnastics business that started in Coquille in 2023 recently started offering additional classes in Coos Bay. The Performing Arts Academy of Coos County now

has more than 100 students that range from toddlers to teenagers. There are also parent and me gymnastics classes for children as young as 6 months (or crawling).

The academy offers a variety of classes in Coquille that include ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary hip hop, and

musical theatre – a combination of singing and acting – as well as gymnastics.

The new classes being offered in Coos Bay have a focus on gymnastics.

State moves to restore, reinstate climate change regulations derailed by natural gas lawsuit

The landmark Climate Protection Program is effectively dead for the next year while state regulators redo the rulemaking and approval process

State environmental regulators will redo the year-long process of rulemaking and adopting landmark climate change regulations that were enacted three years ago.

The decision to do it all over again was announced Monday by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, a month after the state’s second highest court ruled in favor of natural gas utilities seeking to invalidate the Climate Protection Program.

The Climate Protection Program was approved in 2021 by the state’s rulemaking Environmental Quality Commission after more than a year of meetings, presentations from the environmental quality department and public comment. It requires fossil gas companies operating in the state to gradually reduce their emissions, achieving a 50% reduction by 2035 and 90% by 2050. At least 26% of the reductions will have to come from Climate Change continues on page 12

Oregon Bay Area Beautification board members were recognized for their efforts coordinating local second Saturday cleanup events during a volunteer appreciation event on Saturday, Jan. 20.

“We just want to thank you all for coming down to the theatre and supporting us. You get to be here for this incredible celebration with us. I can't believe it's actually here. I get very emotional thinking about it,” said Aymee Pedder, Little Theatre on the Bay board president.

Pedder was joined by board vice president Jeanne Woods just prior to the sign lighting. Woods thanked a variety of community partners who helped bring the project to fruition.

Woods said the production and installation of the magnificent neon blade sign on the Liberty Theatre was made possible through the dedicated efforts of the Little Theatre on the Bay, in partnership with the North Bend Main Street program, and the generous support of Oregon Heritage.

Woods gave special thanks to historic theatre consultant, George

cleanup events, include filling up more than 600 trash bags, clearing 100s of cubic yards of illegal dumping, freeing 200 plus trees from invasive ivy, refurbishing about 20 park benches and tables and maintaining more than 100 miles of trails during 2023.

Coos Bay Mayor Joe Benetti attended the event to thank the local group of community volunteers for their work.

“I just wanted to come and say thank you for everything you've done.

It's an impressive list of what you've accomplished,” Mayor Benetti said.

“Volunteerism is what makes our city and our community what it is. You go out and make a difference, and you make us proud,” he said.

Oregon Bay Area Beautification President Beth Chu handed out dozens of awards to volunteers at the event, including many local youth.

She said these youth play a big part in the success of the volunteer group.

She also thanked her fellow board members during the event.

“There's a lot of coordination that goes into these second Saturday cleanups that you don't see, necessarily. Without all of their help, we

After the opening remarks, a large group of community members joined the board members in a countdown as they all stared up at the sign. The crowd cheered as the neon sign lit up the night sky, glowing yellow, red and blue.

After the event, representatives from the City of North Bend stated that the brightly glowing sign serves as a beautiful beacon for downtown and is a reminder of the Liberty Theatre's rich history in the community.

The multi-year/multi-phase Liberty Theatre capital campaign was initiated in 2015, and is on track to reach its completion goal by Liberty’s 100th birthday in spring 2024.

The campaign focuses on accessibility, youth programming, school partnerships, and downtown economic development. More than $3.5 million has already been raised to support the restoration effort’s eight phases.

Southwestern hosts free showing of the film Malcolm X to celebrate Black History Month In celebration of Black History Month, Southwestern Oregon Community College’s IDEA Committee (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access) is sponsoring a free showing of the film Malcolm X at the Egyptian Theater, 229 S. Broadway, Coos Bay. The film will begin at 6 p.m. on February 22 with doors opening at 5:30 p.m.

The critically acclaimed biography, directed by Spike Lee and featuring Denzel Washington's Academy Award-nominated performance, shows the life of a man who played a central role in a time of significant social change. The film provides an excellent portrayal of an often-misunderstood leader in the U.S. Civil Rights Movement who has garnered both praise and fear in his time and beyond.

Although admission is free to anyone, money donations will be accepted and appreciated. Half of all donations for the film will go toward “THE SPOT,” Southwestern’s free student pantry where current students can get food, hygiene and personal care supplies, as well as additional resources, at no charge.

Additional donations will go to the Egyptian Theater.

Information on Southwestern’s programs and steps for admission to the College will also be available in the lobby of the theater from 5:30-6 pm.

The dance and gymnastics company is operated by Jessica Hall. She is a long-time dance teacher who has performed in television, movies and commercials, and has toured with musical recording artists.

Hall said teaching dance and gymnastics came naturally to her.

“I actually started teaching at my own elementary school when I was eleven because they didn't have any dance there,” Hall said.

“I started in dance with ballet and then began taking pretty much every class that was out there,” she said.

When she was 26-years-old, Hall opened up a dance studio of her own.

She specializes in teaching proper techniques. In fact, Hall said, she has students who have gained full college scholarships through their training with her.

“It’s a really good thing to put on your resume to have danced. I work really hard to teach proper dance technique, so my students can go on to do it in college if they like, or have that experience to help them pursue other career goals,” Hall said.

The dance and gymnastics teacher said she decided to move to Coos County after fires ravaged her community near Los Angeles in 2019.

“Businesses were shut down and there was no longer a community,” Hall said.

“I had a three year old and I was pregnant at the time,” she said. “I grew up in a small town that was similar to Coos Bay and I realized that it was time to move – for my kids mostly.”

Hall said the Coquille community, and now the Coos Bay community,

have been really receptive to her dance and gymnastics classes.

“I’m surprised how many children are interested in dance and gymnastics here. It’s been wonderful,” Hall said.

Each class performs different dances – including the 3 to 6-year-old classes (with the exception of gymnastics).

Hall said her favorite part of teaching gymnastics and dance is watching her students evolve.

“If they are struggling or going through the trials and tribulations of mastering a move, I like to see them stick with it. They may get frustrated, but once they have it, they want to do it again and again,” she said.

Recently Hall said she had a young girl who was afraid of the tumbling part of the class, and was hesitant to let the teacher help her.

“I let her know she would need to learn how to do it to perform. Then, one day after she had been practicing at home, she came in and she had it down. I gave her a hug and we clapped for her and you should have seen her,” Hall said.

“She moved through something emotionally,” the teacher said.

“Dance is more than just physical.

It’s teambuilding. It’s moving through difficult moments. That’s what I like to see – watching the kids evolve not only as performers but as people.”

The latest series of classes started on January 8. These students are working toward their June recital.

Al Walsh

Madeleine Anne Fortinberry Jones

October 1, 1932 – January 20, 2024

Alfred C. Walsh Jr., age 91, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2024 at Bay Area Hospital. He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Nancy Irene (Eilert) Walsh and children: Brian (Sue), Karen Parker (Brian Woods; Doug Parker), Tom (Kathy Walter; Carol Walsh), Al III (Kelly) and Stephen (Mira), loving grandchildren Joe (Tara), Nancy, Nicole, Ryan (Danielle), Daniel (Brittany), Brendan, Al IV, Megan and two precious great grandchildren, Jett and Willow.

Al was born in Portland, Oregon at the original St. Vincent's Hospital on October 1, 1932, the eldest of five children of Alfred and Myrtle (Derbes) Walsh.

He is also survived by his siblings Gerald (Reiko), Carole (FX) McLellan and Patricia (Raymond) Hain. His sister Kathleen (and brother in law, Ed) Altenhofen preceded him in death.

Following graduation from the University of Santa Clara in 1954 and two years in the US Army, he attended the University of Oregon Law School and obtained his law degree in 1959. He moved that year to Coquille Oregon where he was in private practice until his 2006 retirement.

During those years he also served as protem district and circuit judge for Coos County, and as municipal judge for the cities of Coquille and Myrtle Point and periodically as an arbitrator for the American Arbitration Assn. and the Coos County Arbitration Panel. He was

especially pleased to accept an appointment for several years as federal U.S. Magistrate for the Southern Oregon area.

Al had a strong belief in the Christian principle of love thy neighbor and he attempted to accomplish many things for the community through volunteer work. He was active in Holy Name Catholic Church, serving on its first parish council, and taught religious education classes for years to many children.

In his early years the Coquille Junior Chamber awarded him the Distinguished Service Award for outstanding community service. He was combined secretarytreasurer of the Coquille Rotary Club for 40 years and proudly served many terms on the board of South Coast Hospice and the Coquille Hospital budget committee. He was a founding board member of the Sawdust Theatre, the Coquille Student Loan Fund and the Carl Rietman Rotary Foundation and a Trustee of the Carl and Camilla Rietman Scholarship Fund, all of which continue to this date.

As their retirement years arrived, Al and Nancy enjoyed traveling together to places at home and abroad.

They also spent many days at their beloved Croft Lake cabin with their children and grandchildren. Many fun days were also spent catching salmon on the Coquille River.

Al had a God given talent of playing the piano by ear. We all loved listening to

him play, especially during the Christmas season. Al was also an accomplished artist.

He created over 25 beautiful paintings, including one for each of his grandchildren.

In a final note to his family Al expressed these sentiments which we proudly share: "Mom and I often remark that our greatest blessing (after each other's forever company and devotion) is the love and respect we see between all of our children, their spouses, loved ones and families.

We happily grow old knowing that such will be our most enduring legacy."

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on January 26th at Holy Name Catholic Church in Coquille at 12:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Coquille Food Bank (PO 465), or the Holy Name Church Building Maintenance Fund (PO 368 Coquille 97423).

On January 6, 2024, Madeleine Anne Fortinberry Jones passed into eternal rest in Heaven from natural causes. She was 94 1/2 years old. Born in Atlanta, GA, May 1, 1929, as a young adult she worked as a secretary for the family business and others in town. She married George Bruce Jones on July 11, 1952. They lived out their lives with laughter and love, and in service to God, their family, and their neighbors in Georgia, California, and Oregon.

Madeleine worked at World Vision, Int’l, in Monrovia, 9 years, then Focus on the Family briefly, retiring in 1987 when they moved to Coos Bay, Oregon. They attended Bay Area Bible Baptist Church until 2004, when Madeleine moved to California with her daughter Janice Mitchell and family, after Bruce’s death. She returned to Coos Bay in 2017 to live with her daughter and son-inlaw Kathy and Randy Hammer.

Madeleine was preceded in death on Dec. 29, 2002, by her husband of 50 ½ years, and by her sisters and brothers: Elizabeth Pentecost, Sheldon B. Fortinberry II, Jacqueline Moore, and Albert Fortinberry.

She is survived by her three daughters and their spouses: Kathryn and Randy Hammer of Coos Bay, OR; Patty Farrell and David Farrell of Tualatin, OR; Janice and Rommey Mitchell of Dayton, NV; and by her 10 grandchildren and their spouses: Kayella & Steve Daughterty, Benjamin & Chelsea Reinhart, Elizabeth & Bill Croce, Shawn Reinhart & Tori Hernandez; Kathryn Elise Rose O’Conaill, John Bruce Farrell; Jerrod & Nicole Mitchell; Heather Mitchell Mason; Alaina Kenny; and Melissa & Robert Kurschner; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Madeleine is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews throughout the United States.

held in North Bend and Portland, Oregon: Memorial at Bay Area Bible Baptist Church, 2590 14th St (corner of 14th and Oak), North Bend, OR, 97459, 541756-6707, May 4th, 2024 at 11:00am; and Graveside at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, OR, May 6th, 2024, at 11:00am.

A graveside service for Stella Ardella Jackson, 82, of Coos Bay, will be held at 2pm, Friday, February 2 at Ocean View Memory Gardens, 1525 Ocean Boulevard NW. in Coos Bay, with a potluck to follow at her residence.

Stella was born May 3, 1941 in Sedgwick, Arkansas to James Willard Gibson and Mary Leona Schaffer.

She left this earth January 18, 2024, after a fall and short illness, and is now at peace.

Stella married Spergeon “Spud” Jackson on May 3,

1966, in Coos Bay. She lived in her home in Empire for 53 years and alongside Spergeon, they raised 3 sons and a daughter and 5 children from Spergeon’s first marriage.

She was a quilter, a homemaker, a seamstress and most of all, a mother. She will be greatly by all those who knew her.

Stella is survived by her sons, Glen and Randy Jackson and daughter, Sheila Pointer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Spergeon “Spud” Jackson, Jr. and son,

A longtime proponent of taxes on beer and wine is now in charge of a state task force studying the public health impacts of alcohol abuse and whether to raise alcohol taxes for addiction treatment.

Rep. Tawna Sanchez, D-Portland, was elected chair of the state’s new Alcohol Pricing and Addiction Services task force in its first meeting last week. The 20-person board is made up of state lawmakers, public health experts and representatives of Oregon’s beer, wine and cider industries. The task force is looking at alcohol addiction in Oregon, its cost to the state and the funding of Oregon’s lackluster addiction prevention and treatment system. It’s also considering whether to boost taxes on beer and wine, which are set by the Legislature.

Alcohol kills more than 2,000 people and costs the state nearly $5 billion a year, according to the Oregon Health Authority. Advocates and some lawmakers have been pushing for years to raise alcohol taxes.

Studies show drinking goes down when taxes go up, and Oregon levies some of the lowest taxes on beer and wine of any state.

But the beer and wine industry along with distillers have repeatedly pushed back against higher taxes, including a request last year by Gov. Tina Kotek to increase the alcohol surcharge by 50 cents to fund addiction treatment that she eventually withdrew.

The industry touts its value to the state’s economy, and brewers, in particular, say a tax increase now would arrive during a stretch of bad business.

Nationally, beer sales fell 5% last year, according to the industry publication Beer Marketer’s Insights. More

breweries closed than opened in Oregon, which is unusual, according to the Oregon Beverage Alliance.

“This is a pretty complicated issue,” Jamie Floyd, part-owner of Eugene-based Ninkasi Brewing, said at Friday’s meeting. “It seems like the state of Oregon has actually done a fairly good job of raising money, just not necessarily getting it to where it wants (it) to be.”

Taxes on beer, wine and cider producers raise more than $40 million, according to the Oregon Office of Economic Analysis. The state also distributes and sells liquor at a mark-up, which brought in almost $625 million from 2021 to 2023.

However, the state spends about 3% of those funds on addiction, according to Ramsey Cox, a spokesperson for the Oregon Beverage Alliance, which opposes new taxes. The tax also applies to out-of-state producers that sell in Oregon.

Alcohol sales amount to the state’s thirdlargest source of revenue, said Matthew Van Sickle, a spokesperson for the Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission.

Oregon’s beer industry executives say a tax hike now would come at a bad time for business.

Oregonians binge drink and 12% have an alcohol use disorder. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines binge-drinking as least four drinks per occasion for women and at least five for men.

Nationally, the federal agency says alcohol kills 140,000 people in the U.S. a year. One study found that alcohol accounted for one-fifth of all deaths of adults aged 20 to 49 between 2015 and 2019. The researchers said that public health authorities could reduce premature deaths with “evidencedbased … alcohol policies, such as increasing alcohol taxes or regulating alcohol outlet density.”

The commission first imposed a 50-cent bottle surcharge on alcohol and spirits in 2009 that has been renewed since then.

But lawmakers have not increased beer and wine taxes since the 1980s. In 2021, Sanchez — a licensed social worker who says she is in recovery – introduced a bill to dramatically raise taxes and use the windfall to help shore up Oregon’s poor addiction treatment system.

The proposal would have raised the state’s beer and cider tax from $2.60 per barrel to more than $70. The wine tax would have spiked from 65 cents per gallon to more than $10. The bill died in committee after an industry lobbying effort.

Sanchez tried again to pass a smaller tax increase last year, but that effort also fell flat.

During the task force meeting, Sanchez called that bill “an opening salvo” to begin a conversation. Ultimately, she sponsored the law

that created the alcohol task force last year.

Aaron Sarnoff-Wood is the co-founder of Corvallis-based 2 Towns Ciderhouse. He said Friday that the cidery has grown into the thirdlargest in the U.S. He said Sanchez’s proposed tax increase would have cost his business $4 million per year, which is more than his company’s profitability. Any more taxes that come from the task force would hit his business as the industry struggles amid declining public interest in alcohol.

“It has been a rough couple of years for the alcohol production industry,” he said.

Oregon has lost more than 20 breweries this year, according to the Oregon Beverage Association. Cox said that’s largely because demand for beer fell during the pandemic, and people aren’t drinking as much as they used to.

“The last thing any local business needs are tax increases,” she said in an email.

Seventh Generation is an Indigenous Haudenosaunee principle that decisions made today should result in a sustainable world seven generations into the future.

The first picture I am sharing this week was taken in May of 1958 when burglars hit the service station of George Chappell (first photo) "who points to a spot, between stove and desk, from where the 500-pound safe in his service station was taken by burglars Thursday night or early Friday morning.

"In full view of the highway in downtown Bandon, through windows on two sides, and under lights shown in the picture, the thieves yarded the safe across the floor and through the front door, from which they had entered by jimmying the lock."

This had been only one of many burglaries which had occurred in southern Coos and northern Curry county in recent weeks, including the Bandon Airport, Pacific High School, Aldropp's Garage, Woodworth Dairy near Port Orford, Bartol Domenighini dairy ranch at Bear Creek, and a number of petty thefts in the area."

Four men, three from Four Mile and one from Coquille, had been arrested in connection with most of the burglaries, except the Chappell service station heist.

"Some contents of Chappell's safe were found late Friday on the Clausen road four miles south of Coquille. Receipts, personal papers and a check pouch, as well as fire clay and parts from the safe itself were discovered near the river bank, and an imprint on the bank indicated the safe had been pushed into the Coquille River, police said."

The following week's paper said the safe had been recovered from the main channel of the river along the George Clausen road.

"Discovery of the safe was made during low-tide probing operations by Chappell, Ralph Davidson and Don Garvin, according to Police Chief D.S. MacDonald. The door, which had been removed by the burglars, was also recovered. The safe was empty when found.

"A bundle of old bank deposit slips and other papers in a small 'ditty bag' found floating in the Coquille river Wednesday by the operator of the Riverton ferry were identified as

At the time, the service station was located on what is now the gravel lot across the highway from Face Rock Creamery. Just to the east of the station is the two-story home where my family and I lived at that time.

The second and third photos, taken in the spring of 1958 at the Bandon port dock, make the accident look way more serious than it was.

"It looked bad to passersby who saw this seven-yard dump truck upended at the Port of Bandon boat basin fill project (second picture) last Thursday morning, but the truck and its driver, Pete Hull, were back at work in about an hour.

"Hull was backing into position for dumping a load of fill material when the earth gave way beneath the truck.

He jumped clear as the truck, owned by Floyd Peterson, rolled over.

"Soon after, the truck was righted by the Port whirly (third picture) and pulled to firm ground by a small 'cat' used on the fill project.

"There was apparently little or no damage to the truck, and the driver, unhurt, went on about his haul."

Among those watching the operation were Forrest "Nort" Norton, in plaid shirt, foreground, and Pete Hull, standing on the passenger side of the truck.

-------------------------I learned this week that Warren Thompson, a member of the Bandon High School Class of 1959, had died recently at his home in Coquille. Warren was a three-sport athlete, playing varsity football, basketball and track.

He was married to the former Sheri Haga, who survives him.

-------------------------I always like to hear from my history pal Bill Smith, who comes up with some interesting tidbits. It seems he went to the basketball game between Bandon and Illinois Valley Friday night, and discovered that the jayvee coach, Ryan Lathen, was the son of Janice Cline, who with her family and sister Judy, moved to Gold Beach after attending high school here for several years.

Officials Association, who, back in a newspaper interview in 2014, had been officiating for 54 years.

And he's apparently still at it ... at the age of 84.

-------------------------Dr. Hank Holmes is celebrating his 50-year career as a medical doctor by inviting the community and most especially his former patients, medical staff and all those "who made his last 10 years of practice in Bandon the most memorable of his career" to join him in a celebration Saturday, Feb. 3.

The event will be an open house from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Bandon Fisheries Warehouse on First Street. Dr. Holmes will speak at 3:30.

Dr. Holmes has made many lasting friendships during his decade in Bandon and I hope that the community will turn out to honor him.

-------------------------Oregon Coast organizations, including the Port of Bandon, have received more than a million dollars in competitive grants from Travel Oregon to fund accessible and inclusive tourism projects in the region.

As one of the Oregon Coast awardees, the Port of Bandon received $100,000 to add accessible, paved parking and enhance the historic Old Town Bandon waterfront district by creating an inviting place for all visitors and residents to enjoy.

I was told by an official of the Port that the gravel lot in front of the Bandon Fisheries Warehouse/Farm and Sea will be paved, so I am assuming this is one of the projects for which the money will be

used. This will certainly improve the parking situation in front of that popular building.

Statewide, 56 grant recipients were awarded $3.6M aimed at enhancing local economies and communities through visitor industry improvements and promotion.

-------------------------Although members of the city council were advised not to attend the Perk Development open house Thursday night, I understand there was a huge crowd of people, some of whom left before the event after determining that there would be no presentation. Later, I understand there was a question and answer period.

I am sure that a large crowd will be at the city council hearing on the development, known as Gravel Point, when the actual hearing is slated for Wednesday, Feb. 21, at 6 p.m. at city hall.

People will be able to attend the meeting via Zoom as I sure the seats will fill up fast inside the council chambers. Note the earlier start time because of the number of people who may want to testify during the hearing, which, rather than being on the planning commission record, will be a new hearing, known as de Novo.

Earlier, the Bandon planning commission, on a 4-2 vote, approved the development. There have been two appeals, including one by ORCA (Oregon Coast Alliance) through its executive director Cameron

LaFollette.

-------------------------I want to clarify something that I said several weeks ago. The Rolling Pin business, which includes the restaurant, bakery and coffee shop, is for sale for $699,000. The building, which formerly housed the Rexall Drug Store adjacent to McKay's, is not for sale.

-------------------------My rain guy, Gerry Terp, provides me with the rain totals every month, including the calendar year totals for the last 19 years. Yearly totals have ranged from a high of 86.59 inches in 2017 to a low of 34.19 inches in 2013. He recorded 67.57 inches for 2023, up from the 53.84 inches in 2022.

I just happened to come upon an item in a 1920 Western World, which said the average rainfall for the period from 1915 to 1920 was 50.63 inches, including 61.56 inches for 1919 and 39.77 for 1918.

-------------------------I saw an article in the League of Oregon Cities bulletin about legislation being filed that would end, or materially change, BM110, which we know as the decriminalization of hard drugs, like meth, cocaine, heroin and fentanyl.

The bill was introduced by none other than State Representative Rick Lewis (R-Silverton), who served as Bandon police chief years ago.

The bill would make significant changes to Oregon's approach to substance abuse response, including increased penalties for distribution of narcotics that leads to death, and making it a criminal offense for the public consumption of drugs.

Frankly, this is long overdue! And I am not surprised that it took a seasoned police officer to understand the damage that has been done to our state by making user-grade amounts of hard drugs no more serious than a traffic ticket.

Despite rain, mayor walk with residents

Despite the rain, North Bend Mayor Jessica Engelke and Coos Bay Mayor Joe Benetti carried on their monthly Walk with the Mayors community engagement event. This was the third walk, led by Mayor Benetti, who took the group through scenic Mingus Park just minutes from downtown Coos Bay. Featuring gardens, a pond, playgrounds, fields and more - Mingus Park makes for a refreshing and relaxing stroll. Walkers enjoyed chatting with the mayors while getting some exercise surrounded by nature. Mayor Engelke will host February's walk in North Bend.

Coos-Curry County Farm Bureau scholarship available The Coos-Curry Farm Bureau is offering two, $2,000 scholarships, for the 2024-25 school year. The scholarships will be given to high school seniors who plan to major in an agriculture related field at an Oregon college, university or community college.

Current Oregon college students who are majoring in an agricultural related field are also eligible. Coos-Curry County Farm Bureau also opened up their scholarship criteria to include students of Coos-Curry County Farm Bureau voting and supporting members who will be attending an Oregon College, university or community college in the field of their choice during the 2024-2025 school year.

Natural gas is almost entirely methane gas, among the most potent climate-warming greenhouse gases that trap heat in the atmosphere.

One-third of global warming is due to human-caused emissions of methane, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

But in December, Court of Appeals judges agreed with natural gas utilities that the state did not fully comply with disclosure requirements when it voted to create emissions rules that exceed federal rules that affect entities with air pollution permits under the federal Clean Air Act. David Roy, director of communications for NW Natural, said in an email that the company will also participate in the repeat rulemaking process. He did not respond to a question about whether the company would operate as if the Climate Protection Program were in place during that process.

“We believe in effective climate policy and remain committed to moving toward a low-carbon energy future while safely, reliably

and affordably serving our customers,” he said.

In a statement, leaders from seven nonprofit environmental groups, including Oregon Business for Climate, Oregon Environmental Council and Climate Solutions, among others, supported the state’s decision to go back to rulemaking.

“We applaud the state’s decisive action to reinstate Oregon’s Climate Protection Program without further delay. Oregonians have long demanded that fossil fuel companies take responsibility for the devastating harm they cause to our lives, our families, and our communities,” they said.

Dear Abby: My ex has primary custody of our young daughter, "Kayli," and is with her 99% of the time. I have Kayli every other weekend.

Her mom has been dropping her off with a bag filled with wrapped presents. These presents are marked by day and hour. Along with the presents, my ex has created multiple alarms in our daughter's phone to let her know it's time to open the presents.

I have asked her to stop doing this, as it is a huge distraction and disruption that interferes with my time with Kayli. On multiple occasions when my daughter and I are eating dinner, her alarm goes off and she gets up and leaves the table to open a present from Mom. Sometimes, she'll delay leaving the house if she knows it's almost time to open a present.

Sometimes, I turn off the alarms and silence Kayli's phone because if she's not reminded about them, she doesn't care about the presents. However, what also happens is that Mom will text or call our daughter to see if she has opened the presents.

She has refused to stop this practice and replied by saying she will continue because it makes our daughter comfortable.

Kayli has been visiting my house for 10 months. This practice only started three months ago when my ex and I finally settled on a custody agreement. Besides turning off the alarms and silencing her phone, is there anything I can do to limit Kayli's mom's interference during our time together?

DEAR Disrupted: It is time to have an honest talk with your husband about this. When a sex offender is released from prison, there are stipulations in place. One of them is being forbidden to live close to young, vulnerable children. Because your street is populated with them, David may not be ABLE to live with you. This is something you and your husband need to be communicating about as David's release draws nearer, because it will have an impact on your lives.

Dear Abby: My husband, "Buddy," did some HVAC work for some friends of ours. We live in California, where it can get super warm. My husband paid upfront ($600) for the expenses. He sent them an invoice, and the husband replied, "No worries, Buddy. I'll reach out to you next week."

It has been four months -- and still no payment. I know my husband should not have waited this long to collect, but the couple had just bought a house, so he was trying to be sensitive to their money situation.

A few weeks ago, he sent another message with a reminder and a similar response came back: "No worries, Buddy. I will come see you Monday." Well, Monday has come and gone and NOTHING. No one wants to fight or go to court about this, but how can friends do that to other friends? Can my husband still ask for the payment? Or should he just write the money and the "friends" off?

DEAR Show Us: This appears to be another example of "no good deed goes unpunished." Now that you know these "friends" lack character, cut your losses and write them (and the debt) off. Unless you have something in writing proving they owe you the money, I don't think you stand a chance in court.

A WORD PLEASE: HOLY COW! HISTORY: Natural language When Seed Sacks Were Chic

Necessity is the mother of invention, we are told. The recent economy reminds us of how the mother of all hard times, The Great Depression of the 1930s, turned desperate families into hothouses for creativity and imagination. Times were especially challenging for farmers. Even in the best of times, many farm families often lived dangerously close to poverty.

There were two things 1930s farm wives could always count on: Their good old reliable pedal-powered Singer sewing machine and a determination to make ends meet with whatever was at hand.

Consider Exhibit A as evidence of that: seed sack dresses. You may have never heard of them, but you can bet your grandma or great-grandma of the Greatest Generation knew all about them.

In the early 1930s, everybody was in the same boat. The whole country was flat broke.

There was no work to be had. Almost overnight, cash became a rarity. The new motto was, “Make it yourself, make do, or do without.”

Money or not, daily needs still had to be met, such as keeping the family clothed. That was especially challenging for large farm families with many children. Desperate times call for desperate measures, they say.

And desperate mothers took matters into their own hands. Literally.

They made dresses out of the only thing that was handy.

In that long-ago time

before eating out was an everyday occurrence, most wives cooked at home. They also purchased far fewer items at the grocery than they do now. Why buy bread, biscuits and pie crusts when you could bake your own for less money? So they bought flour in 50- and 100-pound bags. Those sacks were made of durable cotton woven so sturdy the contents didn’t seep out.

If that was good enough for flour, farm wives figured, it was good enough for clothing.

So they cut up the empty sacks and turned them into dresses. As one woman remembered years later, “The first time I wore one to school, I felt self-conscious about it. But then I noticed most of the other girls were wearing them, too. That was the last I thought about it.”

Seed products likewise sold in bulk to farmers in similarly sturdy 100-pound fabric sacks were also pressed into fashion service.

The practice became so widespread that one historian estimated as many as 3.5 million mothers and daughters wore homemade flour sack dresses during the Depression. And that statistic wasn’t lost on the big mills that produced and sold flour and on seed sellers.

Many began putting their products in cotton sacks decorated with brightly colored floral prints. They even made labels with ink that came off with a good washing, leaving no trace of the fabric’s origin. Soon, flour bags and seed sacks stacked in grocery stories resembled bolts of cloth in dry goods

America eventually clawed its way back to prosperity. In the economic boom that followed World War II, sack dresses were quickly discarded as unwanted reminders of the hardships people had endured. Years later, they resurfaced in the memory of old folks, transformed from symbols of shame into badges of honor. Those homemade dresses exemplified the toughness of people determined to survive the worst economic horror the country had ever experienced.

Resilience is a key component of the American Spirit. Let us pray we never face the test of character our ancestors confronted nine decades earlier. But if we do, let’s also hope that a good supply of flour and seed sacks are on hand to help us get through it.

If congressional Republicans can tactically concede specific points to Democrats while emphasizing border security, they may still construct a robust argument for the GOP in the November elections. However, Republicans must decide between internal conflicts or confronting Democrats on crucial, substantive issues. If the GOP continues with the former, it will likely endure electoral defeats in the fall.

“I’ll dress warm,” I wrote to friends recently in a group email about a get-together on the patio of a local café.

What happened next will sound familiar to every careful user of the English language: I second-guessed my own grammar. “Is ‘warm’ OK instead of ‘warmly?’” I wondered.

“How do those rules work again? And, even if I got it right, do I have to worry my friends will think I was wrong? Can I defend my choice? Will I have to?”

If you know people who don’t care a whit about their grammar, don’t look down on them. Envy them. These folks not only sidestep a lot of this anguish, but, ironically, their nonchalance often ensures good grammar. After all, natural language is where grammar rules come from.

Winging it prevents hypercorrection, which is what happens when you work too hard to speak grammatically and, as a result, make a mistake. “Between you and I” is a good example. The more grammatically correct form is “between you and me,” since “between” is a preposition and prepositions take object pronouns. But people trying to be proper use “I,” ironically making their choice less proper than the people who didn’t try so hard.

That goes double for adverbs. Consider

the sentence: Slice the onions thinly. To someone who’s fretting over grammar, the adverb “thinly” might seem necessary, since you’re talking about an action: slicing. But you’re not describing an action.

You’re describing a noun: the onions.

“One must analyze the sentence,” advises Bryan Garner in Garner’s Modern American Usage.

In this case, he explains, “slice” is a verb, “the onions” is the object of the verb, and the word that follows is the object complement — that is, a word modifying the object. So when choosing between “thin” and “thinly,” you have to understand that you’re describing not a verb but a noun: the onions. And describing nouns is the job of adjectives, not adverbs.

Thinly isn’t the manner of slicing. Thin is the state of the onions when you’re done. So the correct form is “slice the onions thin.”

In “I’ll dress warm/ warmly,” these relationships aren’t as clear. Yes, I want myself, a noun, to be warm. But you could also consider this a manner of dressing: dress warmly. So in this case, it’s up to the speaker to decide whether she wants to modify the verb, to dress, or the noun, herself. There’s no wrong answer.

Sentences like “I feel bad” are a little different. Here, there’s no object of the verb because this isn’t a transitive

verb. It’s a linking verb, whose job is to point back to the subject. This dynamic is clearer in “Jane is happy,” “Joe seems nice” and “The dog acts innocent.”

Because these are linking verbs, you need adjectives like “happy” to describe the nouns in the subject. Whereas in “slice the onions thin,” you’re describing a noun not in the subject but in the object.

But even if you were slicing thinly or dressing warmly — if you really meant to describe the action — you could still say “thin” or “warm” if you wanted to. Why? Because of flat adverbs.

Flat adverbs are words used as adverbs in which you just drop the “ly.” “Drive slow.”

In this example, there’s no question that you’re describing an action and that you need an adverb to do so. But “slow,” when you use it as an adverb, is an adverb.

Yes, even without the “ly” ending. That’s why “drive slow” is grammatical.

Of course, “drive slowly” is more proper.

So avoid flat adverbs when they might raise eyebrows. But my email with “I’ll dress warm” wasn’t going to ruffle any feathers, so I stuck with it.

The Chamber Minute: The Ambassadors

Rosey in for another Chamber minute, Today I’d like to highlight one of my Chamber Teams; The Ambassadors… This week was exciting; with fun events in the community involving our most visible arm of the chamber.

The Bay Area Chamber Ambassador Team was there with red vests on to help the Liberty Theatre perform a ribbon cutting and turn on their Neon

There were many people in attendance enjoying popcorn and awaiting the big flick of the switch! Then again for the New design launch for Petal to the Metal Flowers the next day.

Many of us were learning how to make incredible wire and floral designs, while we learned about her business and spent time in fellowship. It was great to see all the volunteers in action, celebrating with the community and representing our Chamber. Just a couple

examples of the Bay Area Chamber’s red-vested welcoming committee, The Ambassadors, which greet visiting dignitaries, cut ribbons at grand openings, and assist with business after-hours events. These events are a great place to network and support other businesses in the local area. What a Great Bunch of volunteers who take great pride in being Chamber Ambassadors; working together to ensure new businesses coming in will get a great welcome, and existing

businesses will have multiple avenues to host events from with support.

We are always looking for more volunteers to share in the fun this group has.
