Pigs on the Wing: A Pink Floyd Retrospective 7 pm, April 26th Egyptian Theatre Pigs on the Wing’s 20232024 tour, “A Pink Floyd Retrospective”, will feature a meticulously curated collection of the very best of classic-era Pink Floyd cuts organized into 2 distinct sets. Rather than performing a single album from start
to end, expect to hear the band focus on their favorite sections of the classic albums, including hits, deep cuts, and the band’s trademark willingness to explore the sonic space in experimental improvisation. Fans can expect an immersive visual show in a don’t-miss event for any Pink Floyd fan! From its garage-rock roots in 2006 as a one-off show, to full album productions and performing for thousands of fans each year, Portland Oregon based Pigs on the Wing have built a loyal following dedicated to the band’s high energy take on Pink Floyd’s music. All members of Pigs on the Wing are seasoned veterans of the Paci c NW rock scene and are unapologetic in bringing their wide-ranging musical in uences to the table. Setting the band aside from other tribute rock acts, Pigs on the Wing balance a decidedly un-tribute-like attitude towards the music with precision to detail and a deep understanding of the importance of Pink Floyd's music in many fans' lives. Sonia graduated in 1950 from Jefferson High School in Portland where she met her life partner, Robert “Bob” Bruce Merrill. After high school she attended business school in Portland.
Sonia and Bob married April 27, 1951. In 1955 the couple moved to North Bend and started their business, Merrill Pest Control. Sonia handled the office, bookkeeping and phone duties for the pest control business and the concurrent
Duane Lee Smith
A graveside service with full military honors for Duane Lee Smith, 88, of North Bend, Oregon will be held at 1pm, Friday, March 22 at the Roseburg National Cemetery.
Duane was born August 11, 1935 in Columbus, Wisconsin, to Donald and Vivian Smith. He passed away March 9, 2024 in North Bend.
During his younger years, he really enjoyed skeet-shooting, hunting and fishing.
Linda Layton
In January of 1955, Duane joined the United States Air Force. He completed officer training while stationed in Great Falls, Montana, and met and married Marilyn Brost, who was working as a registered nurse. Their four children, Daniel, Catherine, Brian and Laura came quickly thereafter, as the family moved around the country from base to base.
Duane’s Air Force career began as a
May 22, 1944 – February 16, 2024
Linda was born May 22, 1944, in Ankeny, Iowa to Meryl and Fanny Hoff. She passed away at 79 years old, February 16th, 2024 at home in Coquille, Oregon. She is survived by daughter, Angie and Jeff Sayler; Daughter, Wendy and Greg King; Son, Mike and Sarah Layton; Son, Willy and Denise Layton, Mother, Francis Hoff; Sister, Shari Lytton; Brothers, Chuck and Jerry Hoff, 8 grandkids,3 great grandkids and one more on the way.
Linda was an independent, strong willed woman whose passion was her kids and grandkids. It wasn’t very often she’d miss any of their sporting events
or 4-H activities. She always said her greatest accomplishment in life was her kids.
Throughout Linda’s life she was very active in her community.
From the Fairview PTO to the Halloween Carnival, Christmas Program, Bleacher Club, working at the Devil’s Hut, Coaching Track, playing volleyball with the “Purple Plums”, she still found time to spend on her hobbies of woodworking and painting and going to bazars.
If Linda were not helping with her kids’ activities, or perfecting her own hobbies, you could find her at the river fishing- her other
construction contracting work.
After 60 years in North Bend and two years after her husband passed, Sonia moved to Roseburg. In 2023, after her son passed, she moved to Lincoln City where she felt at home with the coastal storms, fir trees, the smell of ocean air, and a walk on the beach or around the neighborhood with relatives.
Sonia enjoyed family camping trips and local outings to the
beaches, sand dunes, and especially Shore Acres. Her favored daily activities included swimming laps at the municipal pool and riding her yellow Schwinn 10-speed bicycle around town. Sonia took the most pleasure in walking her dogs and attending local area dog shows, both of which she did throughout North Bend, Coos Bay and neighboring communities. For over 30 years, at least several
times a week she walked around Empire Lakes with her beloved dogs, family members or alone, greeting other familiar walkers along the way.
Sonia is preceded in death by her sister Dolores Johnson (née Hagen); her husband Bob Merrill; and her son Dan Merrill. She is survived by her daughter, Diane and Jim Dreiling of La Pine; daughter, Debbie and Lewie Setzer of Lincoln City; daughter, Kayla
Skye of Roseburg; daughter-in-law Carol Merrill of Roseburg; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
navigator, then a jet pilot, a helicopter pilot and finally a computer programmer and included a one-year stint flying helicopter search and rescue missions out of Thailand, during the Vietnam War.
In 1975, Duane retired from the Air Force after 20 years of service. The family moved to Myrtle Creek, Oregon, where Duane was a sheep and cattle rancher.
He was an
outdoorsman who loved shooting, Willys Jeeps, nature, wildlife and land. Everyone knew that Duane’s first love was the wide-open skies of Montana and he eventually moved to Lewistown, Montana with his significant other, Judy Dixon.
Duane will be remembered and deeply missed by all those who knew him. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn, and is survived by his sons, Daniel
love.
She will be deeply missed and held in the hearts of all who were privileged to know her.
At her request, no public services will be held for her. A private family celebration will be held at a later time.

"A merchants branch of the chamber of commerce may be organized in Bandon as the result of a discussion which took place at the noon luncheon of the directors, held at Queen Anne ( rst picture) yesterday," according to the Nov. 3, 1927, issue of Western World.
"Close to 30 business men were present. The subject was brought up as the result of a solicitation made by C.H. Crockard, general manager of the 'Good Will' service system, a community advertising and tradebuilding proposition, which is designed to draw the merchants together in pulling for more business in the community.
"While the Good Will plan was not taken up, the idea of a merchants group to discuss community matters, as they relate to the retail businessmen, will be the main topic for discussion at the luncheon next Wednesday to be held at the Gallier Hotel (second photo).
The third picture I am sharing is of the earlyday lighthouse keepers residence, to illustrate a Western World story from Feb. 17, 1927, when the lighthouse keeper received an ef ciency star.
"For the second time in its history, the Coquille river light station received federal recognition for its high standard, when O.R. Langlois, present keeper, was last week signally honored by the award of the U.S. Lighthouse ef ciency star. These gold stars are awarded to the keepers for their ef ciency in the lighthouse service, and their award signi es that the station is in perfect condition; cleanliness must be 100 per cent, and harmony must exist between the keeper and his assistants. Stars were awarded to keepers of six light stations in the 18th district this year. The district comprises the coast of Washington and Oregon to the California line.
"The Coquille river light station was rst established as a harbor light in 1896. Mr. Langlois will have been in the service 21 years on April 1 of this year. O. Wiren, former keeper here but now at the Winchester Bay light station, was the only other keeper to be awarded the ef ciency star.
"This station is known as a fourth order light. It has a 490-candle-power light, stands 50 feet high, and can be seen 12 miles at sea."
Ever since the courts ruled in favor of a person who sued the City of
Newport after falling on a bridge en route to the beach, recreational trails up and down the coast have been closed on the advice of local insurance agents.
Although temporary, during the recent special session, the Oregon Legislature passed Senate Bill 1576 to restore the legal power of recreational immunity -- a law that protects public and private landowners who open their land for recreational purposes.
Not only did the fear of litigation close 22 trails along the coast, but it also halted or postponed projects considered by other cities, including the City of Bandon.
The x is only temporary and will come before the legislature next year for a more permanent solution.
One of those who was strongly against the decriminalization of hard drugs was long-time Coos County District Attorney Paul Frasier, who issued a statement last month as the legislature prepared to tweak the controversial measure.
"There have been unintended consequences since Measure 110 passed," said Frasier.
"For example, in the last three years in Coos County alone, the number of accidental overdose deaths has tripled. Of even more concern is the death of young children. I have been a prosecutor for 39 years. Never in my career until the last couple of years, have I seen young children die of methamphetamine overdoses. In 2022, there was a four-month-old baby that died as a result of meth. Later that same year, a three-year-old child died of meth intoxication," said Frasier.
Small amounts of street drugs have been recriminalized, and users can be cited for a misdemeanor that carries a potential six months in jail. But it also calls on counties to set up "de ection" systems in which users are offered multiple opportunities for treatment. A spokesman for the legislature said "the idea is to emphasize a health response aimed at helping a user connect with services rather than a criminal response. The bill also called for expungement of charges following completion of treatment."
The Coos County Board of Commissioners and Sheriff Gabe Fabrizio have said they will not be establishing a de ection center, but rather will provide a sobering center, based on Douglas County's successful model.
As I See It
The center will be run by ADAPT.
"As it stands now, there is no appropriate place to send a sobering drunk," said commissioner John Sweet. "Certainly the jail is not the place, nor is a hospital ER. A sobering center will hopefully give the county an appropriate spot."
"De ection, as it's indicated in the bill, indicates a pre-charging instrument at time of contact by the of cer or deputy on the street. It's tantamount to a warning for possessing hard drugs, which would carry no follow up," said the sheriff. "I don't believe any of the police chiefs or I are terribly interested in that at this time, except in unforeseen exceptional circumstances."
The 140-page HB 4002 goes into effect Sept. 1.
I have been reading on Facebook about the upcoming closure of 101 Plants and Things, where many of us have been buying our plants for many years. At the present time, there is a 50 percent off sale on plants, pottery and garden supplies (Wednesday through Saturday, 10-4) as the owner, Pat Kerker, prepares for closing March 16.
Certainly sorry to see this long-time business close.
The Bandon High School girls basketball team, which nished second in the state to Western Christian 45-40 at the recently completed state tournament in Pendleton, garnered many honors in the Valley Coast Conference all-conference selections announced last week.
Katelyn Senn was named Valley Coast Conference player of the year and a member of the rst team. Olivia Thompson was named rst team all conference, as well as to the defensive team. Makenna Vierck was named rst team all-conference and to the defensive team.
Nyah Dimitruk was named second team all conference, and Caitlyn Michalek, received all conference honorable mention. Katelyn, Olivia and Nyah are seniors; Makenna is a junior, and Caitlyn is a sophomore.
Head coach Jordan Sammons was named All Conference Coach of the Year. His assistants are Daniel Senn and Kerry Twyman.

My weather guy has only been providing me with stats for the last 20 years, but this February's 11.09 inches of rain, coupled with the 19.69 inches in January (total 30.78 inches), made it the wettest January and February in two decades. The only other year with over 30 inches was 2017, with 30.19. And with the way it's been raining in March, who knows, we may break all records.
subsequently contacted SCINT, who sought and obtained a search warrant for the hotel room and the suspect's car, a 2021 Polstar.
The two were arrested on numerous drug charges and transported to the Coos County Jail. However a short time later, the sheriff's department issued a statement that said the two were to be released from jail due to Oregon Revised Statute 475.898 giving offenders immunity from some drug-related offenses when calling for emergency medical assistance.

This coming weekend, (March 16-17) Bandon Fisheries Warehouse is hosting a St. Patrick's Day wine and Irish food event, Saturday (11-7) and Sunday (11-4), with a $10 entry fee, which entitles you to a glass for wine tasting.
Two people, Rogelia S. Espinosa, 40, and Diana Gonzalezsolis, 52, were arrested March 3 after the South Coast Interagency Team served a search warrant at Shooting Star Motel where they seized almost a pound (358 grams) of methamphetamine, 66 grams of heroin, 21.32 grams of fentanyl, and $13,000 dollars in U.S. currency. Of cers received a 9-1-1 call of a man needing medical attention from an overdose at a motel in Bandon.

I later learned that although they were to be released because of an Oregon law, the feds stepped in and took possession of the suspects, charging them with federal drug crimes which kept them from being released from custody.

I wish I had more positive news to share about Coast Community Health Clinic, but my sources say that they are, or soon will be, down to one provider, although a new CEO arrived Thursday, replacing the one who was red several weeks ago. I keep hoping that the board of directors will issue a statement so that the community, not to mention their patients, will have some idea as to what is happening and what to expect. I do know that in the past year, they have red two CEOs and two doctors, and others have left.
I did learn, from talking with a spokesman for the Coast pharmacy, that they are a separate entity, and hopefully they will continue regardless of what happens to Coast.
I know you don't all see my column at the same time, and because of printing schedules, some may come out after an event has occurred, but others read it rst thing Monday morning, so events are current.
At Tuesday's Meet and Greet (March 12) at Bandon Fisheries Warehouse, Roger Straus is expected to talk about the Bandon Lions Club, starting at noon, with seating opening at 11:30.
"Shipwreck Stories: Tales of the Treacherous Bandon Bar" is the title of a program from the Bandon History Museum at the Meet and Greet March 19. At noon, Museum volunteer Jim Proehl will share stories and pictures of maritime disasters and mishaps at the mouth of the Coquille River.

Guest Column OPINION:
How Ireland Gifted America in Music, Politics and Literature
By LLeweLLyn King InsideSources.com
Ready for craic on Sunday?
Craic, pronounced crack, is an Irish word that has seeped into English and means party or revelry.
Try as you may, you won’t avoid Sunday’s craic because on Sunday, March 17, hundreds of millions of people around the world will be wearing the green. In short, celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, the national day of the Irish, by putting on something green and taking a drink.
No other nation, let alone a tiny country with a troubled history, can have such a claim on the heartstrings of the planet. For one day, we are all Irish — many of us will go to a place where drink is sold to celebrate it. There isn’t a lot of preamble to St. Paddy’s Day — except for the arrival in the pubs of green-colored beer. Ugh!
The Irish diaspora, which reached its apogee during the Potato Famine of the 19th century, sent the Irish to the far corners of the earth, especially to America, where they endured poverty and eventually prospered.
They brought with them their music, which influenced American Roots Music, like Bluegrass, Folk and Country; their towering literary talent, which gave us generations of writers.
And they got into politics, big time.
A documentary in production and scheduled to be released in 12 episodes at the end of the year, “From Ireland to the White House,” traces the Irish ancestry of 24 U.S. presidents from Andrew Jackson (of Scots-Irish lineage) to Joe Biden.
Tony Culley-Foster, the U.S. representative of Tamber Media, the Dublin company producing the series, tells me the scholarship has been exacting in tracing the ancestry of the presidents. He said the 24 presidents on the list have been certified by the same independent historians and genealogists used by Clinton and Biden. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are 31.5 million Americans who claim Irish heritage. So it has become essential for presidents to make pilgrimages to Ireland — to wrap themselves in green.
From my experience in Ireland, the two mainly taken to heart as being of their own were John Kennedy and Ronald Reagan, and of those, Kennedy was the greater heartthrob for the Irish.
My late friend Grant Stockdale’s father was Kennedy’s ambassador to Ireland. Grant spent his mid-teen years in Dublin at the U.S. embassy in Phoe-

nix Park. “I knew what it must be like to be royalty,” Grant told me.
But it isn’t just the presidency shaped by Irish heritage. Irish names are to be found on every public service list, from the U.S. Congress to the local school board. There have been great senators, like Daniel Patrick Moynihan, and great speakers of the House, like the towering Boston-Irish Tip O’Neill. If it’s politics, it’s Irish.
In Britain, some of the greatest statesmen and orators in the House of Commons have been Irish, think Edmund Burke and Charles Parnell.
Ireland’s gift to the world has been its contribution to English literature. Hundreds of great names come to mind. Try Oscar Wilde, Bram Stoker, Samuel Beckett and Edna O’Brien.
And the books keep coming, tumbling out of the most literary fertile minds on earth.
Two contemporary writers dominate my thinking: John Banville and Sally Rooney. Banville is prolific, profound and a joy to read, a master craftsman at the top of his form. Rooney is a kind of literary Taylor Swift, who writes about the sex, love and isolation of young adults of her generation. I am keen to see how she evolves and if she will give joy for generations, as great writers do.
Literacy is part of the fabric of Irish life. An Irish person, far from literary circles, will ask you conversationally, “What is your book?” Translation: “What are you reading?” Ireland treasures books, and reading is a national pastime.
Ireland’s literacy may have saved its economy. At a bleak period when, just 40 years ago, I heard many Irish leaders talk about “structural unemployment” of 22 percent, American scientific publishers found that highly literate women were a resource. That led to a boom in footnoting in Ireland, followed by American Express looking for accurate inputting, and, suddenly, Ireland was transformed from one of the poorest countries of Europe to a boom nation and the Silicon Valley of Europe, as the computer giants moved in.
Galway, a town known for its bookstores and fishing, became ground zero for computing in Ireland.
Craic has no discernible economic value except for the brewers and distillers, but it is such fun. As the Irish say, Slainte (cheers)!
