Hidden gems in Oregon

Oregon State Parks describes the Golden and Silver Falls State Natural Area as a hidden gem in the dense coastal forests of southwest Oregon. BY BREE LAUGHLIN

Oregon State Parks describes the Golden and Silver Falls State Natural Area as a hidden gem in the dense coastal forests of southwest Oregon. The trails to the falls include a short hike from the parking lot. Recreationists are rewarded with views of two separate cascading waterfalls. The falls currently have less water flowing over them than in the springtime, but are still a sight to see. Golden and Silver Falls is a 24-mile drive from Highway 101 near Allegany. The drive to get there can be windy. The final 3-miles narrow to a one lane gravel road and drivers are encouraged to go slow and use caution. A small parking and picnic area are located at the base of the trails as well as vault toilets. The area is shaded by large maple, alder and Oregon myrtle trees.
