Christmas Opry, a festive way to ring in the season BY BREE LAUGHLIN The World

A talented group of performers are coming together to kick off the Christmas season at the historic Liberty Theatre. The local musicians – which includes instrumentalists, singers and dancers of all ages – have been rehearsing for the upcoming Christmas Opry. They will be performing a variety of holiday favorites, from traditional Christmas songs to modern-day favorites. “It really gets the season started off with a bang,” said Photos by Bree Laughlin

Native storyteller coming to Coos Bay Public Library BY BREE LAUGHLIN The World

A Native musician and educator is sharing her stories and songs with families in Coos County. Portland-based Karen Kitchen (Osage Nation) will offer two Native Story Hours at the Coos Bay Public Library on Tuesday, Nov. 21 at 6 p.m. and Wednesday, Nov. 22 at 10 a.m. The special story hours will feature songs that showcase American Indian music and Native traditional stories. Both programs are free and open to all ages. Karen Kitchen is a prek-12 educator with more than three decades of service in urban Title VI Indian Education programs. Karen hosts Multnomah County Library’s Native Story Hour, where she promotes Native authors, illustrators and publishers and engages children and their families through story and song. “Throughout my life, I've enjoyed singing and learning and telling stories,” Kitchen said. Coos Bay downtown hosting Shop Small Saturday BY BREE LAUGHLIN The World

The Coos Bay Downtown Association is encouraging holiday shoppers to shop small to make a big difference in the community. The downtown association is holding a ‘Shop Small Saturday’ event on Nov. 25 to encourage shoppers to support their neighborhood businesses and embrace the day as a holiday shopping tradition.

“It's a way to support your community. If you go into a local retail store, it helps out the community. Even if you eat at a restaurant downtown – that's local business,” said Holly Boardman, the Executive Director of the Coos Bay Downtown Association.
