Artist proud of North Bend mural By DAVID RUPKALVIS The World

When Don McMichael finished a painting of a variety of whales in 1992, he had no idea his work would one day tower bigger than life in downtown North Bend. But as he drove into town Saturday for a special event at Books by the Bay, that is exactly what greeted the renowned artist, who specializes in whales. After years of trying, Books by the Bay owner Harold Midyette finally convinced McMichael to let his work be transformed into a mural, and the result is spectacular. Midyette said he has wanted a mural on the side of his building since he opened Books by the Bay 24 years ago. I didn’t think Don would allow us to copy his work, so when I was talking to Patrick

A Thanksgiving treat The Green Lion Dispensary offered a special Thanksgiving treat for 100 lucky people who lined up to receive free turkeys from the North Bend dispensary. Green Lion said it wanted to do the giveaway as a way to thank the community for supporting the new business in North Bend.

A surprise ceremony took place on Monday, November 20, to celebrate the achievements of a special set of sisters attending North Bend High School. The Buskerud twins, Brynn and Haley, have had quite the impressive year. After competing in Spokane, Wash., at the USA Judo Senior Nationals this May, the twins took home four gold medals, one for each of the four events they competed in, thus sweeping the field. This earned them a call-up from the USA National Judo Team to represent their country in two events at the 2023 Pan American Judo Confederation Championships. There they continued to display their commitment and talent, taking home another two medals, gold and bronze. In lieu of their incredible achievements, NBHS and representatives from the city and state government came together to surprise the twins with a congratulatory Please see CHAMPIONS Page 3
