It has been an honor to grow with the students of the North Bend High School Class of 2023 from their 6th and 7th grade in middle school to their graduation. I have had the joy of working with these students, as they have grown from children to adults. Their educational experience has been shaped by some of the most divisive political rhetoric in a generation and the most profound public health crisis in a century.
They’ve wrestled with the distraction of social media, the temptation of vaping, and the transition from textbooks to digital learning platforms.
Valedictorian - Cambree Messner
Valedictorian Cambree
Messner is the daughter of Chris and Stacey Messner and sister to Kaleb and Brady. Cambree has been involved in Student Council all 4 years of high school, a member of Key Club, Z Club, and International Club. She played an active part in planning 2022’s Prom and Bulldog’s Got Talent. She has truly enjoyed her time working in the library with Susan and Mrs. Lancaster and assisting with all the Holiday decorations. She was also a leader for Safety Town at the Boys
and Girls Club. She has earned All School Awards in History, French, Math, and Aiding. Cambree plans on attending Southwestern Oregon Community College to pursue her degree in Elementary Education in hopes of becoming a Kindergarten or 1st grade Teacher.

Sierra is also into politics and represented North Bend at Girls State before being selected to represent Oregon at the 2022 Girls Nation. She has taken part in a variety of sports, earning letters in tennis, cross country, and track. Her favorite sport, though, was competitive mountain biking. During her two competitive seasons, she placed
These graduating students have triumphed over adversity and are prepared to enter the adult world with powerful reasoning abilities, self-respect and self-control, integrity, a strong work ethic, and academic and professional skills that will lead to success wherever their goals will take them.
Parents and our community should take pride in, and I am grateful for, the 2023 graduates of North Bend High School.

Valedictorian Jake Newsum is the son of John and Lisa Newsum. He will attend Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon, to study business with the goal of becoming an entrepreneur. He has always been competitive, and sports is where he lets that competitiveness shine. He has been on the bowling and baseball teams throughout high school. He has competed in bowling at the national level twice, both in teams and solos. In teams, during his freshman year, they placed 12th in the nation. In solos, he competed and achieved the top 35 in the nation and

bronze in the state. In baseball, he had the highest number of bunt singles in the state during his junior year. He felt that both of these sports are now a part of who he is, shaping him into the person he is today. He says they have taught him to keep fighting for what he loves, no matter how many obstacles are placed in his way. He has also spent four years attending jazz choir, a zero period at North Bend High School. He’s spent over five hundred hours in his lifetime singing with fellow musicians in this class, and they never fail to lighten the mood. He says music has a way of connect-
ing people, no matter how stressed or disconnected they may be. On another note, he is also the senior class president, which he is very grateful for. When it comes to clubs and activities, he tries to stay involved in the community. He’s been inducted into the National Honor Society and the Science National Honor Society. Most recently, he was elected prom king for his senior year of high school, where he also sang one of his favorite songs for his fellow classmates. He is overwhelmed with the support from not only his peers but also the students that sur-
round him. He is forever grateful for the opportunities he was given. However, none of these achievements would have been possible without the overwhelming support and love of his parents.
Valedictorian Rebecca
Witharm is the daughter of Bill and Jane Witharm. She will be majoring in Microbiology at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona. Rebecca has participated in symphonic band and marching band throughout her high school career. In band, she has been a section leader since her sophomore year and was a part of the State
Championship her senior year.
Rebecca was also a member of the swim team all four years, where she was a member of many relays that placed in the top six at state, along with finishing in the top six in many individual events. While on the swim team, she was the MVP for both her junior and senior year, and a team captain her senior year. She has been a member of
Science National Honor Society since junior year, and was the vice president of this chapter her senior year. Rebecca was also the president of National Honor Society during her senior year. She is proud to be a part of the National Recognition Program and one of the valedictorians of NBHS’s class of 2023.
Valedictorian Avery Pex is the daughter of Allyson McNeill and Jim Pex. Avery participated in basketball and track for all four years of high school and volleyball for three. She played Tenor saxophone for the NBHS symphonic band every year of high school, even traveling to Europe to play in four countries as a member of the Oregon Ambassadors of Music band. She recently won first place at state in a duet and is very proud of the symphonic band’s state championship title this year! Avery was also very active in many clubs like Z-club, Science National Honors Society, National Honor Society, Chess club, and a few others throughout the years. Although very busy with school, Avery also enjoyed hobbies such as drawing, painting, rock collecting, gardening and caring for her many pets. In school, she liked all of her classes, but especially loved science, leading to her receiving the Bausch and Lomb Science award her junior year and being selected as a Hutton Scholar to complete a fisheries biology internship this summer. She
would like to thank all of her family for being so supportive with her schooling and all of her school activities because without them, it would not have been possible. In addition, she would like to thank all of her friends who made her take breaks and help enjoy life instead of just focusing on schoolwork. She gives gratitude to every teacher and coach for their support and mentorship. Avery will be attending Oregon State University Honors College in Corvallis to study Biology in addition to pre-vet studies as well as play her saxophone in the OSU marching band. Avery has a goal of becoming a veterinarian or another career involving animal sciences.
Valedictorian Sarah Shore is the daughter of Jim and Kari Shore. She plans to attend Southwestern Oregon Community College to study nursing and become a Medical Esthetician. While a student at North Bend High School, she was a member of the National Honors
Society and Science
National Honors Society.
Sarah feels her biggest accomplishment is being on the varsity softball team for four years as well as being the captain. She is honored to represent her school and be labeled as one the Valedictorians of 2023.
Valedictorian Jade
Nanda is the daughter of Rohit and Noelle Nanda. She participated in girls golf throughout high school and is a member of the Hauser Dune Riders 4-H horse club, National Honor

“I have attended Coquille Jr/Sr High for the last two years of High School and it has been such a blessing. I am honored to be Valedictorian of the 2023 graduating class. During my time here I have participated in Volleyball, serving as Team Captain, Basketball, also serving as a Team Captain, and Track & Field state championships; including the first women’s team

state championship in Coquille history! In my senior year at CHS I served as President of National Honor Society and Treasurer of Student Council. Outside of school I attend the Grace International Church in Myrtle Point. Following High School I plan to pursue athletics at the collegiate level. I look forward to studying Agricultural Business.”
My name is Godfred Amonoo, and I am honored to be the salutatorian of the class of 2023. I am the son of Philip and Tracy Amonoo, and at the age of 17, I have achieved many accomplishments. I was born and raised in Ghana until the age of 11, and I have since made a home for myself here in the United States. Throughout my high school career, I have been a member of the National Honor Society, demonstrating my commitment to academic
excellence. Additionally, I am proud to have served as captain of the Coquille Varsity Boys Soccer team, a position that allowed me to exercise leadership and teamwork skills. One of my proudest moments was contributing to the team's victory in the school's first-ever soccer league championship last fall. In the fall, I will be attending Southwestern Oregon Community College, where I plan to study nursing. I am excited about this new chapter in
my life and look forward to contributing to the healthcare field.
