is Breast Cancer Awareness Month where all kinds of activities will be taking place to help us improve our knowledge and understanding of this terrible disease, as well as raise awareness and funds to help combat breast cancer. On page 24 of this month's magazine we look a little closer at some of the wonderful charitable organisations and their volunteers who dedicate their time to helping others. It is worth remembering, especially now more than ever, how important this is. With the NHS under so much pressure in the continuing wake of the Covid pandemic these volunteers offer even more help and support. So many of us have had our lives affected by breast cancer as well as other such horrible diseases, it is worth remembering the support we have received along the way. Donations keep these valuable organisations going so it is important that we donate when we can if possible. As well as funding, many of these charities need volunteers. As the popular supermarket says "Every little helps." And it really does. So if you have a little time, and are able, definitely find a way to get involved.

Ted Lasso Apple TV+, 8 October

This month see's the season finale of the amazing second season of this heart warming comedy. It is not surprising season three is already planned, especially after the awards it scooped up at the Emmy's. Heart-warming and funny, we could all learn from Ted Lasso's leadership lessons: 1 believe in believe, 2 live in the moment, 3 doin’ the right thing is never the wrong thing, 4 all people are different people, 5 optimism is a superpower, 6 be kind, 7 tell the truth, 8 happiness is a choice, 9 forgive first and 10 see the good in others. Well worth the Apple TV+ subscription fee on its own.
ITV, 27 September The boys are back! This time their RV is hitting the beautiful Greek islands and historical city of Athens, for a big fat Greek adventure, together again behind the wheel on an epic odyssey like no other. From island hopping on a catamaran, to jet ski racing and shipwreck diving, there will be bromance and bickering in equal measure.

Gordon, Gino & Fred Go Greek Angela Black ITV, 26 October Angela Black’s life appears idyllic: a house in suburban London, days working volunteer shifts at a dogs home, two beautiful sons and a charming, hardworking husband – Olivier. However, beneath this façade of charmed domesticity, Angela, played by Joanne Froggatt, is a victim of domestic violence. Olivier (Michiel Huisman) is controlling and brutal; but Angela loves him and he’s the father of her children. So she covers her bruises with make-up and fabricates lies to explain away her missing teeth. Angela Black is a Hitchcockian thriller that follows one woman as she risks everything she holds dear to fight back against the man who has suppressed and tormented her for most of her adult life.
Wayland Babes by Judi Daykin North Norfolk author Judi's new book is about The Wayland Woods in Norfolk – an ancient place where sound and silence, truth and myth, and life and death intertwine. Some say that the babes of the woods still walk the Earth – wandering through the trees, forever lost, holding hands and searching for help. To see them is a terrible omen. Five tales tell of five lives touched over five centuries by the so-called babes in the wood. If they beckon, will you follow? Available to buy from www.hobeck.net 11

The Suffolk-raised recording artist has resonated with fans across the world through his peerless songcraft and versatility. Ed Sheeran is an era-defining artist. Through his fusion of thoughtprovoking songwriting, universal pop and multi-genre influence, his rich tapestry is not only perfectly suited to his audience but it's something that transcends generations. Ed's latest album is due for release at the end of this month and judging by the sneak peak at the tracks which have been released so far it is destined to be another hit. Next year will also see more live dates. The +-=÷x TOUR (pronounced The Mathematics Tour) kicks off in Cork on 28 April, before heading to the UK and then on to the European leg. Unfortunately no Suffolk gigs have been announced as yet, but speaking from experience it is worth the trip. I was lucky enough to attend one of the Ipswich nights and Ed doesn't disappoint with his unique one man sound. Tickets for the 2022 tour go on sale 25 September at 9am, but be quick they will undoubtedly go fast.

It's only October and many of us might not have mentioned the 'C' word yet, but Christmas is only round the corner. Like many of the cornerstones of the festive season you need to get booking and ordering to avoid missing out. The Thursford Christmas Spectacular is no different. This ledgendary extravaganza of non-stop singing, dancing, music, humour and variety has now become an East Anglian tradition. It’s a fast moving celebration of the festive season featuring an eclectic mix of both seasonal and year round favourites. With a cast of 130 this is the biggest Christmas show of it’s kind in Europe! The glittering rhinestone and tinselpacked variety show will run for seven weeks during the festive season, 9 November to 23 December. Speciality acts such as the marvellous Billy George on the Cyr Wheel, one of the world’s leading acrobatic acts, will be returning this year, (as seen on ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent), introduced by Kev Orkian, a fellow BGT finalist, the energetic BritishArmenian comedian. Thursford has definately got you covered for laughter, awe, amazement and a whole lot of festive cheer.

One of the most exciting bands to have entered the UK folk scene in the past twenty years, The Lost Boys is the brainchild of BBC Radio 2 Folk Award-winning singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Sam Kelly. The Lost Boys band has gained a reputation as one of the best live acts in the UK and they have packed out festival tents and venues the world over since they started in 2016. After the critically acclaimed album Pretty Peggy saw them nominated for best group at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2018, Sam Kelly & The Lost Boys have returned with a brand new album: The Wishing Tree, and a short UK tour to celebrate. The band will be joined on tour by special guest Katherine Priddy, and this will be a one-off show featuring a high-octane melting pot of brand new material.
Autumn multi-generational
activities,
let’s get
going! Many of us have been separated from family and friends over the past 18 months so here are some wonderful experiences for reconnecting from ages 0 to 100 says Melanie Cook of VisitNorwich.co.uk
I always
think food comes into its own in autumn. During the summer months we consume BBQ, salads, berries and copious amounts of ice-cream. Come autumn, I’m ready for hearty casseroles, Sunday lunches with all the trimmings, puddings with custard and red wine. The Assembly House in Norwich knows a thing or two when it comes to themed afternoon teas - as if we need any more excuses to visit! So, this autumn make sure you book a table for their Autumn Hedgerow Afternoon Tea. The tea sums up everything there is to love about autumn: bramble hedgerow trifle, falling leaves cupcakes, harvest apple and salted caramel Gateau Opera, cinnamon foxes and ‘last of the summer’ raspberry macarons. The autumn tea runs until October 13 when The Assembly House of Horrors Halloween Afternoon Tea takes its place between 16
14-31 October. Prices are £23.95 for one or £47.00 for two with children’s afternoon teas at £14.95 (aged 12 and under). The Assembly House also has beautiful private intimate dining rooms for larger get togethers if there are several of you. Larger family groups getting together to enjoy days out and activities have become a bit of a national trend. At St Peter Mancroft in Norwich, Gaia arrives for a month, which I’ve been looking forward to for such a long time. Gaia is an installation by artist Luke Jerram which
has been touring the UK. Those who have their ear to the ground culturally may remember Luke’s first appearance at The Forum in Norwich at Norfolk & Norwich Festival in 2017 with Museum of the Moon. I still have the pictures on my phone, it was an incredible piece to see, especially in the setting of The Forum. Gaia measures 6m in diameter and has been created from 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface. Floating in three dimensions the artwork is an opportunity to see the planet from a very different perspective and has
Out&About
been created to replicate a sense of the Overview Effect, first described by Frank White in 1987. The Overview Effect is experienced by astronauts when a cognitive shift takes place whilst viewing the Earth from space. To add to the overall experience (which in itself will be amazing in a church setting), BAFTA award winning composer Dan Jones has written a surround sound composition which plays alongside the sculpture. Gaia is completely free to see and is open Monday to Saturday 10am to 3.30pm, Thursday evening 6-8pm and Sundays around the church’s usual services. Between 16-17 and 23-31 October BeWILDerwood is back with its popular Glorious Glowing Lantern Parade. A delightful autumnal event with a nod to Halloween suitable for all ages including teeny tiny ones under 92 cm (entry free to this group)! Enjoy crafting your very own lantern to help the Boggles & Twiggles light up the woods, before you take a wonderful twilight walk with everyone invited to join the Twiggle Team sporting their best Halloween garb. Along the way watch out for hints of the BeWILDerwood characters peering out to say ‘yoo-hoo' and not BOO! Stop for a bite to eat too at the Munch Bar for warming snacks and hot drinks. The event is ticketed separately from a visit to BeWILDerwood itself (timed slots), costs £10 per person and must be booked in advance at norfolk.bewilderwood.co.uk.
Arts and crafts became hugely popular during periods of lockdown with many of us finding new avenues for our creativity. So it’s great news for artists and art lovers that Norfolk Open Studios (25 September-10 October), returns this year though unusually in autumn rather than spring. A free event, it will see more than 320 artists participating throughout the county, including 81 in Norwich. During this time studios and workshops are throwing wide open their doors to the public to exhibit, sell and talk about their work. Norfolk Open Studios has established itself as one of the largest and most successful open studios schemes in the country, giving visitors the opportunity to see new art, meet artists, and - with many of the works on display being for sale - to buy original artworks directly from their creators. For the full programme go to norfolkstudios.org.uk. Half term takes place this month so families will be delighted that the everpopular Norwich Science Festival is here for 8 days between 23-30 October with plenty of activities, talks and events.
Subjects in the programme include the environment to extinction; fossils to forensics; sustainability to space! And with the United Nations Climate Change Conference taking place in November in Scotland, this year’s festival will shine a spotlight on climate change. Norwich Science Festival is a celebration of the ground-breaking scientific research associated with Norwich and is a partnership initiative involving many organisations from across the region, including the University of East Anglia. The festival offers visitors the chance to explore the wonders of the universe, meet the scientists whose research has changed our world and debate some big questions with some bigthinkers. Ticket prices vary and must be prebooked; for full details go to norwichsciencefestival.co.uk. Finally, pumpkin carving is as much of a tradition at Halloween as mince pies, loud jumpers and Bailey’s are to Christmas. So, with that in mind head over to The Goat Shed at Fielding Cottage. With huge investment last year into what once was literally ‘a shed’, you can enjoy carving pumpkins whilst sipping hot chocolate and tucking into slabs of cake. Tables are available for £30 for up to 6 people and include 4 pumpkins, along with the carving kits, hot drinks for the adults and Cawston juice cartons for the kids, plus a bag of Norfolk cookies to share. There are 5 sessions per day with each session lasting a little over an hour. Book at fieldingcottage.co.uk. The Goat Shed is also a fantastic shop and kitchen bursting with wonderful local produce so it’s also the perfect opportunity to pick up something for dinner, or a few treats, because it is Halloween after all! For events, places to eat and drink, stories, where to shop and visit in Norwich and beyond go to visitnorwich.co.uk. Plus, don’t miss out on news, sign up to the City of Stories newsletter.

without visiting The National Horseracing Museum. The story of horseracing is told through works of art, silver, bronzes, and artifacts including silks worn by famous jockeys. There’s also a racehorse simulator which is a must try! October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month when we’re all encouraged to be more breast aware. Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day or ‘BRA Day’ will also take place in a few weeks’ time when the focus will be on the many methods and benefits of breast reconstruction Carolyn Atkins reports
October
is Breast Cancer Awareness Month when, once again, all kinds of activities will be taking place to improve our knowledge and understanding of breast cancer and help those affected by this terrible disease. It is estimated that one in seven women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime and with around 55,000 women and 370 men diagnosed with breast cancer every year in the UK, it’s no wonder that charities, companies and individuals are all doing their best to raise recognition of the disease and the importance of catching it early. Some charities, such as CoppaFeel!, focus on educating everyone about the importance of checking their whole breast area - that is, the upper chest and armpits - regularly for potential indications of breast cancer, such as any signs of change, whether lumps, swelling, indents or redness, for example. Making checking our breasts or pecs a lifelong habit could save lives, as the sooner signs of breast cancer are spotted, the earlier the people affected can be treated. While some institutions focus on preventative measures or research into the disease, others are keen to help those facing surgery and possible breast reconstruction to ensure that they have as positive an experience as possible during such a difficult time. There are vast, nationwide charities devoted to researching the causes, effects and treatment of cancer, such as Macmillan Cancer Support and Breast Cancer Now, while other regional charities, such as The Big C, with branches and shops throughout Norfolk, Little Lifts and Wymondham-based Star Throwers, work hard in their areas to support those affected by cancer too. At Keeping Abreast the focus is very much on breast reconstruction and on helping those who have been diagnosed with breast cancer or who have discovered a hereditary breast cancer gene, and who are facing or considering reconstructive surgery. This niche breast cancer reconstruction charity started life in Norwich in 2007 and provides peer-to-peer support to those choosing or considering breast reconstruction following a breast cancer diagnosis or discovery of a hereditary gene such as BRCA1, BRCA2 or PALB2. By talking to other people who have been through the process and finding out what the results of real-life surgery actually look like, those weighing up the prospect of breast reconstruction can go into the process with their eyes open, having had the chance to make an informed decision about their own personal situation. There are times when breast reconstruction is not the right option, due to weight issues, age or smoking, for example, or sometimes patients simply can’t face further surgery, and Keeping Abreast is there for them too. Keeping Abreast was established 14 years ago by patients Anna Beckingham and Beverley Birritteri and Breast 25

Reconstruction Nurse Specialist Ruth Harcourt, who still works at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. They recognised a need for women, both newly diagnosed with breast cancer and facing the possibility of a mastectomy, and women further down the line who are considering reconstructive surgery, to be able to meet and talk to others who have been through similar experiences. As highlighted earlier, this allows people to make an informed decision about the sort of breast reconstruction that is right for them. Of course, Covid-19 put paid to face-to-face meetings, but the charity kept going through the pandemic by offering support by telephone, email and WhatsApp as well as via Zoom. Keeping Abreast HQ also put on numerous ‘Zoom Speaker Sessions’ with speakers on all kinds of breast reconstruction-related subjects such as the different types of breast reconstruction surgery, resilience before and after breast cancer and how to alleviate anxiety. These presentations are also available online at: www.keepingabreast.org.uk Those who have undergone breast reconstruction surgery themselves will

Each patient needs to be assessed individually, according to what type of breast cancer they have and where it’s located and then their plastic surgeon and breast care team will let them know their options. the new breast/s, but it’s often the case that these elements will be performed separately and that there will be a considerable wait between them. The Coronavirus pandemic hasn’t helped the situation either, with record numbers of people currently on hospital waiting lists and hospital departments often rushed off their feet. As a consequence, Keeping Abreast HQ, in Little Melton near Norwich, has handled an increased number of enquiries lately from those anxious about their prospective breast reconstruction surgery and how long it will be until that takes place. Keeping Abreast can put those facing breast reconstruction in touch with others who’ve been through reconstruction themselves so they can explain what that experience was really like. The charity has a bank of registered volunteers who

Big C lifted, some ladies who have had breast reconstruction take part in discreet, confidential ‘Show & Tell’ sessions where they show the actual results of their surgery – that is, their reconstructed breasts and scars – to others. This is one of the charity’s most popular services, as seeing the actual surgery results can allay many fears. Keeping Abreast was also fortunate enough to receive funding from the National Lottery Community Fund to help create a brand-new website, available from this autumn onwards, which will feature a number of real-life videos of women who have undergone breast reconstruction surgery and who are willing to tell their own stories first-hand. Another element of the charity’s revamped website is that it will also contain a shop selling a range of Keeping Abreast merchandise, such as mugs, keyrings, pens, notebooks, coffee cups, coasters, clothes and so on, to raise both awareness and funds. Christmas cards will also be available as well as the popular ‘Boobaloo’ bear pin badges, which were created by a keen Keeping Abreast supporter, Pam Lenden, earlier this year. Meanwhile, at John Lewis Norwich, a series of events will take place during October to highlight Breast Cancer Awareness Month in conjunction with the charity. These include bra-fitting on the first weekend of the month, headscarf workshops on the second weekend, and then Style Shows with three Keeping Abreast models in the store’s lingerie department on Saturday 16th October at 11am and 1pm and on Sunday 17th October at midday and 2pm (places for these free fashion shows are limited, so please RSVP to laura.gray@johnlewis.co.uk to book your slot). There will also be beauty workshops on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th October and then wig and hair-styling workshops on Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st October as well as the chance to meet some of the charity’s volunteers.
This year’s Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day is on Wednesday 20th October and is a chance for the charity to promote its services on social media and beyond. The good news is that the original Norwich-based charity has grown in number and location over the years, with Keeping Abreast Support Groups now in Norwich, King’s Lynn and Stalham, as well as further afield such as Herts & Beds, Cheltenham, Bristol, Sheffield, Leicester and Liverpool. The registered Keeping Abreast volunteers are also happy to help those in areas where there are no Support Groups, with modern technology making this possible wherever people are based. Fundraising is integral to the charity, as it is completely self-funded, and a host of events has taken place this year to help raise much-needed funds. Last month a team of breast care nurses, the ‘Plastics Fantastics’ from the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital, held a fantastic fundraising sky dive, and this month ten dedicated runners will compete in the Virtual London Marathon on Sunday 3rd October, to help raise awareness and boost finances. Then next month, the popular Festive Fair at The Forum in Norwich will be back after a two-year break, from Thursday 25th to Sunday 28th November inclusive, where there’ll be a stall selling Keeping Abreast merchandise, tombola tickets and more in aid of the charity. The team at Keeping Abreast is also always happy to help those who want to put on their own fundraising activities. So, it’s time to think pink again this October and to support breast cancerrelated charities everywhere. For more information on Keeping Abreast, visit: www.keepingabreast.org.uk, email: info@keepingabreast.org.uk, call: 01603 819113 or see social media.
New Big C support and information centre opens in Great Yarmouth
Local
cancer charity, Big C, has announced the opening of a new support and information centre in Great Yarmouth. The centre was officially opened by the Deputy Mayor of Great Yarmouth, Adrian Thompson, and local van graffiti artist, Ricky Minns, known as Ruddy Muddy, who is known for creating amazing artworks on dirty vans, often depicting famous people or current events. Dr Melanie Pascale, Director of Charitable Operations at Big C, said: “We are delighted to finally be able to open our new support and information centre in Great Yarmouth. The new ground floor building is easily accessible for all and provides a modern, welcoming space. We will be operating on an appointment basis initially to control numbers within the setting but will review this periodically.” “We are very pleased to be able to once again offer face-to-face support for our service-users, complemented by ongoing virtual services. This is a fundamental aspect of our charity and one we know our service-users and staff have missed.” The new Big C support and information centre in Great Yarmouth is located at 25 Regent Street, NR30 1RL. It has been relocated from Big C’s previous centre in the town which was situated above the charity’s former shop further along Regent Street. Patients with a cancer diagnosis and their families are able to meet with Big C’s professional nursing and information support staff for care and conversation, counselling, complementary therapies, welfare advice and family support. To book a face-to-face centre appointment, a virtual appointment, to enquire about joining Big C support groups, or to receive immediate telephone support please call 0800 092 7640. 29
g n i r i p s n I women Oa Hackett Rachel Gilbert talks to another local inspirational woman.
For
Oa Hackett, the experience of the pandemic has shown more than ever the importance of kindness towards oneself and others. Expressing kindness and care for others is something Oa lives by every day in her personal and professional life. Oa is the founder of littlelifts, a charity that provides chemotherapy and radiotherapy patients with a box of treats and helpful tools to support them during treatment. The charity works with six hospitals within the East of England. Last year they partnered with Make 2nds Count to also provide the boxes to secondary breast cancer patients, living across the UK. The inspiration for littlelifts came from personal experience. In 2014, Oa was enjoying a holiday when she found a lump in her breast. Although she tried to ignore it, her now husband, Greg, pushed her to visit the doctor. Shortly after, Oa found herself diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 28. “I was instantly thrown into a whirlwind of appointments and scans to make sure it hadn’t spread,” Oa said. Six weeks later, she began chemo. “It was really overwhelming — I felt really alone, isolated and angry because I felt quite well, but I knew I had to get sick to get better.” Oa went through six cycles of chemotherapy. She had to give up working at cycle number four when the treatment become particularly tough. Throughout her cancer experience, her family and friends rallied round, giving her puzzle books, 30
illustrated lolly recipes, lolly moulds and many other little gifts to help ease the side effects of treatment. It was this kindness expressed to Oa that inspired her to create littlelifts. Since 2017 littlelifts has given out more than 3,700 boxes packed with practical products to alleviate the side-effects of treatment as well as mood-boosting treats. Now the charity sends out more than 3,000 boxes a year to people undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy, including those treated at hospitals in Norfolk and Suffolk.
Cancer has taught me life is too short to not do the things you want to do. The boxes support women in a myriad of ways: “Feedback from women with young children tell us that the box can be useful to explain what is happening to Mum,” Oa said. The feedback received is overwhelmingly positive: “one woman told us receiving a box was like being wrapped in the most caring of arms, many box-recipients returning to volunteer”.
The effort began at Oa’s kitchen table, eventually growing to a, “small but mighty,” team of three, supported by an army of volunteers. “littlelifts has been a huge part of my recovery,” Oa said. Oa’s goal is for every patient undergoing treatment in the UK to receive a box. littlelifts has recently launched a national fund to begin working towards this goal. Raising awareness about the importance of checking our breasts, and knowing what is normal for us is something Oa champions every
Inspiring Women
day. Each year, 55,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer, with 4% of them being under 39. Breast cancer also affects 350 men. When Oa is in need of inspiration, she looks to another woman that founded a charity after experiencing cancer. Kris founded Coppafeel after being diagnosed with incurable breast cancer aged 23. Kris offered Oa advice, and pushed her to include secondary breast cancer patients in the littlelifts programme. These patients are often receiving treatments reflecting different symptoms and can be viewed as healthy. Offering them the box gives them a voice, Oa said. “It is important to understand everyone’s experience is different and can be overwhelming, but it’s important to accept help and ask questions to your medical team,” Oa said. When Oa isn’t working, she can be found enjoying herself outside. Her dog recently passed her therapy assessment and will soon be able to support patients in hospitals. Oa is passionate about the environment, and has a great love for whales. She was able to kayak with them on her honeymoon in Canada, and spends a lot of time researching how she can next spend time with them on the water and support conservation efforts. “The experience of the pandemic has shown just how important it is to show kindness towards ourselves, others and the environment,” Oa said. Looking ahead to next year, littlelifts will be turning 5-years-old. Oa is already debating taking on a big challenge to celebrate — last year the charity held a “big dip” cold water swimming challenge that raised £10,000. Oa hopes to launch the challenge again in January, and possibly push herself even further. Maybe a carbon neutral trip to the Shetland Islands to visit the whales will be on the cards. “Cancer has taught me life is too short to not do the things you want to do.” littlelifts.org.uk

The award-winning Norfolk-based Wild Knight Distillery has launched 1837 Gin as a fund-raising initiative on behalf of Hospitality Action (HA). HA has been supporting the UK hospitality industry since 1837, hence the name of the gin. Over the past 184 years, they’ve helped hundreds of thousands of hospitality people who’ve found themselves in difficulty or crisis. Mark Lewis, Chief Executive of Hospitality Action commented, “This is an unsettling time for everyone who works in our favourite pubs, cafes, hotels and restaurants. As the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve, we at Hospitality Action continue to adapt our support services. We are proud to have served our industry since 1837 and can only assist the thousands of hospitality people who turn our way thanks to the thoughtfulness and enthusiasm of brands like Wild Knight Distillery.” 1837 Gin is a collaboration between Wild Knight and Norfolk Chef and HA ambassador, Charlie Hodson. Charlie knew Wild Knight wanted to do something to support the on-trade, a sector that’s been through devastating times over the last 18 months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Charlie suggested the Wild Knight-Hospitality Action collaboration, which the team has thoroughly embraced.

Ginger warmer Natur Boutique’s Organic Ginger Tea is made solely from 100% pure organic ginger and is renowned for its sweet, non-bitter taste. The reason for such an outstanding taste comes from the way in which the ginger is grown. It comes from plants grown without artificial fertilisers and pesticides in the warm tropical climate and fertile soils of Vietnam. The conditions and the fact the roots are allowed to grow slowly and naturally gives them a sweeter flavour than normal, which lends them perfectly to making tea. Prices start at £2.99.

Curry HOUSES
National Curry Week runs from 4-10 October, so this month we take a look at the region’s best
Namaste Village
This popular family-run restaurant in Norwich serves a wide variety of flavourful vegetarian and vegan food from different regions of India. The building is beautiful too, having been built in 1887 by an architect who also happened to be a vegetarian! The restaurant also hosts cookery classes once a month, so you can learn how to make your own authentic Indian dishes.
The Merchants of Spice
Date night curry? No one does fine Indian dining quite like The Merchants of Spice. Both restaurants (one in Colgate, one in Thorpe St Andrew) promise the finest locally sourced ingredients, flavoured with authentic herbs and spices. The fabulous food is complemented by the restaurant staff’s first class service.
DID YOU KNOW? • The first curry restaurant opened up in London in 1810. Today, there are more curry houses in London than there are in Mumbai! • The title of hottest curry goes to the ‘Flaming Fiery Phaal’, made with two of the hottest chilli peppers on earth (Scorpion and Naga).
The Bank
Situated in the former Lloyds Bank building in Sheringham, aptly named The Bank serves up the finest Nepalese and Asian cuisine. You’ve had a balti, a tikka masala and a madras – it’s time to branch out and try a buteko masu, a lamb mysor or a chatapata. Everything is made with homemade original spices and organic products from the Himalayan foothills.
Indiagate Beccles
Opened in 2004 and nestled in the heart of Beccles, Indiagate offers casual fine dining Indian and Bangladeshi cuisine to eat in or deliver. Loved by locals this authentic taste of India offers a great selection of dishes. Having recently received a Travellers Choice Award from Tripadvisor this restaurant consistently delivers great quality. Frequented by several members of the Places&Faces team this culinary delight is a staple on our foodie radar.
Spice Den, Lowestoft
Situated in the market square this family run restaurant is beloved by locals. Their Naga Chilli Massala is of particular note, but be warned... it's hot and not for the faint hearted. With their craftsmanship with spice it’s well worth paying them a visit or ordering a takeaway to celebrate National Curry Week (and beyond!). 35

Balti Chicken Vindaloo This was the first curry I cooked and the beauty of this is, once
you have these spices on your shelf, you can turn your hand to most curry recipes. Don't be scared by the 'Vindaloo' in the title, it isn't scarily spicy (unless you want it to be) it's merely referring to the fact that vinegar is added to the spices, to enhance their flavours. Also, this is technically a 'dry' curry as this recipe stands, but if you want a sauce, just add tinned tomatoes or coconut milk (or both) at the end, and leave it to simmer for 30 minutes. Serves 4, cooking time 30-40 minutes (plus overnight marinating)
INGREDIENTS: • 2 teaspoons coriander seeds
• 3 tablespoons desiccated coconut
• 2 teaspoons mild chilli powder
• 2 teaspoons cumin seeds
• 3 tablespoons unsalted peanuts
• 2 teaspoons salt
• 1/2 teaspoon fenugreek seeds
• 6 tablespoons vinegar (any type is fine)
• 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
• 2 garlic cloves (crushed)
• 1 cinnamon stick
• 1 thumb sized knob of fresh ginger (grated)
• small handful of fresh curry leaves
• 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
• 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
• 3 whole cloves • 1 teaspoon peppercorns 36
• 4-5 skinless chicken breast fillets (trimmed and cut into bite-sized pieces) • vegetable oil
METHOD: Dry roast (in a small frying pan) the coriander, cumin, fenugreek, mustard seeds, cinnamon, cloves, peppercorns, coconut & peanuts until toasty and aromatic (keep an eye on the coconut as that will tend to brown first). Crush or grind the mixture and combine with the vinegar, garlic, ginger, turmeric, chilli powder, salt and a splash of oil. Place the chicken in a non metallic dish (or a ziploc bag works too) and pour over the marinade. Stir and leave overnight to marinade. Heat some vegetable oil in a large frying pan or wok and add the curry leaves and cumin seeds. Cook for about 10-15 seconds (or until the seeds start to 'pop' and add the marinated chicken (and the marinade), fry for about 15 minutes, turning the chicken regularly. Cover and continue cooking for 20 minutes until the chicken is cooked through and tender. If you fancy a sauce, now's the time to follow the tip above. Done.

INGREDIENTS: • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds • 1 teaspoon coriander seeds • 1 dried red chilli • vegetable oil • 1 thumb sized knob of fresh ginger (grated) • 2 garlic cloves (crushed / finely chopped) • 1 large potato / 2 large carrots (chopped into small chunks) • 200g Greek yoghurt • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric • 1 teaspoon mild chilli powder • 1 cinnamon stick • 1-2 tablespoons tamarind paste • 1/2 cauliflower (broken into florets) • 150g frozen peas
Vegetable curry with tamarind Serve with chickpeas and rice for a great vegetarian meal (with just as much protein as a meat curry !) Serves 4, cooking time 50 minutes
METHOD: In a heavy based saucepan (large enough to hold all the ingredients), dry fry the cumin, coriander and chilli until fragrant. Then, add a splash of vegetable oil along with the ginger and garlic and fry until softened (not coloured). Stir in the potato/carrots, yoghurt, chilli powder and turmeric, followed by 800ml of cold water, the tamarind, cinnamon stick, salt and pepper. Tarka Dhal Chapatis Simple and healthy, yet delicious. Ideally served with plain rice or a naan bread for dipping, or both.
Making your own bread is a winner with curry and this recipe is so easy, you'll never buy the store made stuff again.
Serves 4, cooking time 50 minutes
Serves 4, cooking time 10 minutes (prep time 45 minutes)
INGREDIENTS:
INGREDIENTS:
• 100g yellow split peas
• 250g wholemeal flour
• 100g red lentils
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
• Approx. 200ml cold water
• 1 litre water
• Vegetable oil
• 1 teaspoon salt • 3 tablespoons olive oil (or another flavourless oil such as groundnut) • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds • 1 -2 dried red chillies (depending on your tolerance to heat) • 1 garlic clove, smashed then peeled
METHOD: Wash the split peas and lentils in cold water and drain. Add to a heavy-based saucepan with the turmeric and water. Stir and bring to the boil, then partially cover and reduce the heat to a simmer. Leave to simmer for around 40 minutes, then stir in the salt and turn off the heat, cover and leave to one side. Put the oil in a small frying pan over a medium heat, when the oil is hot, add the cumin and chillies, cook for a few seconds (they will burn quickly) and then add the garlic. Let the garlic colour slightly, then add the contents of the frying pan to the lentils, pop the lid back on (to trap the aromas) and take to the table. Done.
METHOD: Place the flour and salt in a bowl, mix and make a well in the centre, then gradually add the water, stirring to make a soft dough. Remove to a surface and knead for 10 minutes (add more flour if it's too sticky). Place back in the bowl, cover and leave to rest for 30 minutes. After it has rested, remove and knead again thoroughly before dividing the dough into 12 pieces. Roll each piece out to about the thickness of a pancake on a floured surface. Lightly grease a large frying pan with the oil and place over a medium heat. Add a chapati and cook until the bread starts to 'blister' (this won't take long). Press down with a fish slice and then flip and cook the other side until lightly coloured. Remove from the pan and keep warm while you cook the others. You're looking at about 2 minutes per chapati. Done.
Did you know? Curry or kari?
There are several theories of the origin of the word "curry", however most believe that it derives from the Tamil word “kari”, which is soup-like spiced sauce.
Popular but not authentic. One in seven dishes served in the UK is a Chicken Tikka Masala, however this is not an original or traditional Indian curry. The original dish is rumoured to have been created by Pakistani chef Ali Ahmed Aslam, owner of the Shish Mahal restaurant at the West End of Glasgow, in 1971.
Some like it hot. Some research shows that Glaswegians consume the most spicy dishes per-person in the entire country. However research conducted by the beer company Kingfisher found that Britain’s favourite curry is a korma, so maybe most of us have a slightly cooler palate. 38
Fruit or citrus beers always go well with spicy foods. This superbly refreshing, straw coloured beer has English Pale malts combined with Challenger and Goldings hops which provide a slight bitterness, followed by a distinct zesty and pithy grapefruit aroma with a citrus finish. One day she’ll open her own bakery, but for now, she’s sharing her baking tips, tricks and know-how with Places&Faces. A themed bake is the time to try something different and let your creativity run wild. This recipe is perfect for light, fluffy cupcakes every time. A “bung it all in method” for the sponge makes this bake quick and simple to rustle up for your trick or treaters… or for yourself!
INGREDIENTS: Makes approx 12-16 cupcakes For the sponge: • 175g self-raising flour • 2 tbsp cocoa powder • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda • 150g sugar • 2 eggs • 150ml vegetable oil • 150ml milk • 2 tbsp Golden Syrup For the buttercream: • 250g baking butter • 400g icing sugar • Food colourings • Sprinkles and mini marshmallows to decorate
METHOD: Heat your oven to 160 degrees Celsius and line a cupcake tin with cupcake cases. Put all the ingredients for the sponge into a large bowl and whisk together by hand or with an electric mixer for around one minute. Scrape around the edges of the bowl and mix again for a further minute until you have a smooth batter. Divide this batter between your cupcake cases and bake for 20-25 minutes. Check if baked with a skewer/cocktail stick, if this comes out clean, the cakes are done. While these cool completely, make the buttercream. Let your baking butter come to room temperature and then beat until smooth. Sieve your icing sugar then slowly add this into your butter and mix. Once this is all combined, you can add any colourings of your choice. Separate into individual bowls to mix through the different colours. To pipe the buttercream you will need a piping bag and nozzle. Sitting your piping bag over the rim of a pint glass will make it easier to fill the bag. To get the multi colour swirl, just spoon a little of each colour buttercream down the sides of the bag. Pipe the buttercream in a swirl on top of the cooled cupcakes. Top with sprinkles of your choice. For the finishing touch add two marshmallows to each cake and dot with a little bit of melted chocolate to create the spooky, googly eyes!
1
If you want to mix things up a little, a teaspoon of a flavoured extract such as orange or mint into the sponge and/or buttercream mix will set the chocolate flavour off a treat.
2
Buttercream can be made with real butter but this can be expensive. Baking butter is a great alternative and will give delicious results.
3
A liquid food colouring can negatively alter the consistency of your buttercream. Gel food colourings will be more effective and will give a more intense colour. Grab these in the baking aisle of your nearest supermarket.
4
Piping a neat swirl can take some practice. If you don’t feel confident or don’t have a piping bag, you can always dollop on a little buttercream and smooth it around with a small spatula or the back of a spoon. 41

What are these dark marks on my skin?
Sunspots!
These brown marks are small or medium flat brown areas of the skin and are also commonly known as solar lentigines, age spots and liver spots. They vary in size and are most commonly seen in areas exposed to the sun, such as the face, hands, shoulders, and arms.
How do they develop?
A sunspot occurs due to the natural production of pigment in your skin when your skin is exposed to the sun. However, similar to how scars develop, pigment starts to collect in areas of your skin that have been injured due to increased sun exposure and damage. Over time this collection of pigment can create markedly darker spots and discolouration on your skin's surface.
Who has sunspots & why? People with fair skin are more susceptible to sun-related skin damage. The darker your skin, the more melanin (skin pigment) you have, which helps to block some of the ultraviolet rays that would otherwise damage your skin. Those over the age of 50 are at a higher risk of sunspots and other signs of UV-related skin damage. As you age, your skin becomes more susceptible to stress and damage, causing it to thin and lose elasticity and making it more prone to injury from sun exposure. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, your exposure to UV rays is increased, along with your likelihood of developing sunspots. However, even indoor activities can expose your skin to UV damage through glass, meaning sunspots are still possible. Anyone who is taking common medications such as allergy and acne treatments and pain relief. Some active ingredients in prescription and overthe-counter medications can boost your skin's sensitivity to the sun and make damage more likely.
People who use anti-ageing skincare with alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) may be more susceptible to sunspots. Studies suggest people who used AHA creams/ serums saw their skin become 18 per cent more sensitive to the sun. If you have a weak/compromised immune system or suffer from a chronic disease, you could be at risk of developing sunspots. Your skin contains specific immune cells that react to sunlight exposure, which, if under pressure, are less able to resist and repair surface damage that can lead to sunspots.
How to prevent them? Avoid the worst hours of the sun. There is the most potential for skin damage during the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m, so try to avoid going outdoors in this period. Wear broad-spectrum SPF of a 30-50 factor. Sunscreen prevents sunspots in two ways: It will either reflect or scatter the damaging rays that cause sunspots, or it will soak into your skin to protect against UV-related skin damage. Review your clothing. A hat and sunglasses can shield your face and neck from UV rays that could lead to skin cancer and sunspots.
When should you get a sunspot checked by your GP?
An experienced skin specialist can view the area and confirm their diagnosis but, on occasion, may refer to a GP or dermatologist. The referral is likely if the area is very dark brown/black, has changed in size or colour, has irregular borders, feels sore to touch and bleeds. Try some of these amazing products

Creams and Lotions
You can find many over-the-counter skin-lightening products that promise to reduce the appearance of sunspots. These products commonly contain ingredients such as vitamin C, niacinamide, Arbutin, liquorice and mulberry extract. When used consistently, these products may start to show results in a few months. Still, their exact efficacy varies depending on the active ingredients, how concentrated they are, and what the product contains.

shattering the excess pigment of the sunspot in one of three laser treatments. Cryotherapy is another common recommendation, during which they freeze the sunspots, causing them to peel off. Lastly and my favourite options, our microdermabrasion facials and specific chemical peels. Both treatments help to exfoliate the skin removing the surface layer; this lightens the appearance of the sunspots.

Time to pick up those weights!
I’m a 41 year old mother of two girls and one French bulldog, and I’m a Personal Fitness Coach. I work one to one with clients aged 18-80, and have additional specialisms in pre and post natal training, GP exercise referral, cancer rehabilitation and pilates. I also run community fitness classes in the Suffolk coastal area.
Why strength training is important for everyone!
So, let’s talk
strength training... ‘But wait, I don’t want to end up looking like a body builder, lifting weights will make me bulky, won’t it?!’. Absolutely not, that’s like being scared to drive in case you end up a Formula One driver! Strength training has so many important health benefits, and using appropriate methods it can be done by absolutely everyone, regardless of age or ability. Strength training is also known as Resistance Training. It can include the traditional weights, bodyweight exercises like push ups and squats, and various other equipment such a resistance bands and suspension trainers. It is essentially any exercise that involves you lifting, pushing or pulling a load.
So, what are the benefits, and why should you be doing it? Let’s consider the health benefits first and foremost: Helps to maintain, or even improve bone density. According to the NHS, bone density begins to decrease around the age of 35, as we age, we become at increased risk of developing Osteoporosis. For women this risk increases further due to hormonal changes following the menopause. Strengthens joints. Our muscles support and protect our joints, so stronger muscles equal stronger joints! Reduces this risk of developing heart disease. A 2018 study from the American College of Cardiology found that strength training was better at reducing a person’s risk of heart disease than cardio exercise such as walking or cycling (although a mixture of both is necessary for overall health). Improves mood and mental health. There’s no denying when you weight train you definitely get a certain sense of power and capability. Studies have shown that regular weight training can lead to a significant reduction in the symptoms of anxiety and depression. Mobility and independence. Strengthening muscles and joints allows us to remain more active as we age. Makes everything easier! Heavy shopping bags? No problem, Moving furniture? Easy peasy! Having a stronger body makes everyday tasks that much easier.
Reebok Deck £150 reebokfitness.info
Studio Barbell £129 powerhouse-fitness.co.uk
And of course, there are some aesthetic benefits to strength training… Being ‘toned’. It’s not a phrase I like, because it leads people to believe you can ‘tone’ fat and turn it into muscle (you absolutely cannot!). When someone has a toned and firm appearance, that’s muscle! We can see it because they have reduced their overlying body fat and built muscle through strength training. Burn more calories – Having more muscle mass means you burn more calories at rest (not to mention all the calories you burn during the workouts!). Strength training is so important regardless of your age, gender or ability. If you are new to it, I would definitely recommend getting some guidance from a Personal Trainer as technique is key to ensure that you are performing the exercises effectively and safely.
Equipment Deck A great bit of kit, use on it’s own or in conjunction with weights and resistance bands, the possibilities are endless! Studio Barbell I always recommend these to my clients; the plates can be used as standalone hand weights as well as on the barbell. And they can be tucked away under the bed or sofa when not in use! 51

Get your
winter
ready for As the nights
start to draw in and the chunky knit jumpers come out of storage, it’s time to think about how to best prepare your home and garden for winter. With the arrival of colder weather, we’ll all be spending more of our time snuggled indoors, so make sure your space is as cosy and secure as possible – then, all you’ll have to worry about is what to watch next on Netflix.
Check smoke/carbon monoxide alarms
With the heating and hot water being used more, and log burners and fires merrily crackling away, it’s especially important that all your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are working as they should be. Test them out, replace the batteries and update any units if necessary – smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years, and carbon monoxide alarms every 5-10 depending on the model.
Bleed radiators
Ways to get your home winter-ready Clear gutters
With the autumn leaves falling and stormier winter weather meaning there’s an uptick in rainwater, you’ll want to ensure your gutters aren’t blocked. Clearing them of the usual debris of moss, twigs and leaves means rainwater will drain away from your house and won’t cause any troublesome issues with damp and mould.
After a while out of action, you might find when testing out your heating that your radiators are cold at the top and hot at the bottom. This means there’s air trapped in the system which prevents the hot water circulating properly. To bleed your radiators you’ll need to turn off the heating, locate the bleed valve and, using a bleed key, turn it 180º anticlockwise. Once the air has been released, it’ll start to drip water (keep a towel handy!) at which point you can close the valve.
Insulate your loft
You know the old adage: hot air rises. If your loft isn’t insulated, up to a quarter of the heat you’ve accumulated in your home will be lost through the roof. As well as keeping your house toasty, adding loft insulation will also bring down your energy bills, so it’s a win-win fix.
Draught-proof
If you live in an older or period property, it’s likely to be a bit draughtier than your average new build. Investing in heavier, lined curtains for winter – particularly in rooms you want to be cosy, like lounges and bedrooms – will stop draughts creeping in from windows. Draught excluders are also a handy fix for the bottom of doors so your toes can remain toasty no matter how miserable it gets outside.
Stock up on firewood/oil If you have an open fire or a log burner, you’ll want to make sure you have a good supply of kindling and wood dried out and ready for burning. Stock up well in advance and you won’t have to panic when a cold snap arrives. Similarly, if you have an oil tank, make sure this is topped up early to avoid the peak winter prices.
Get your boiler serviced
A broken boiler in the midst of a frosty spell is everyone’s worst nightmare, so take some time to ensure yours is in good working order. Test out your heating if you haven’t had it turned on since earlier in the year, and if necessary get in a professional (ensure they are a Gas Safety registered engineer) to give everything a service for ultimate peace of mind.

Insulate/lag hot water pipes
Like a broken boiler, a burst hot water pipe is a winter disaster we could all do without. Luckily, it’s easy to insulate hot water pipes to minimise the risk of them bursting and to keep more heat in. Simply pick up some inexpensive lagging (essentially a cosy jacket for pipes) from your local DIY shop.
Check outside light bulbs
If you live somewhere with minimal street lighting, you’ll know how irksome it is to be fiddling round for your house keys when it’s freezing out and pitch black – which in winter round these parts isn’t far off 4pm. To keep your home well-lit and secure, check and replace outdoor lightbulbs or invest in some new motion sensor lights.
Install a smart heating system
You control everything else from your smart phone, why not your heating too? Smart heating systems such as Hive are full of intuitive features such as the ability to turn the heating on, off and up or down without leaving your seat. Monitor your energy usage, set savings goals, ensure the heating isn’t left on in an empty house and turn it on ahead of your arrival home, no matter how late you’ve worked.
Winter DIY projects While the weather outside is frightful, get some jobs ticked off your DIY list so when the sunshine comes back out in spring, you won’t be stuck indoors.
Painting & decorating
If any rooms around the house need a freshen up, now is the time to get it done. Spend a gloomy weekend prepping, painting and pimping up your indoors space so it’s ready for all the Christmas house guests and you’ll be thankful you didn’t stay curled up on the sofa.
Clean your carpets
Why wait for a spring clean when you could sort it all out before winter? If your carpets have seen better days after lockdown and could do with a good scrub, give them a new lease of life with carpet cleaning machines like a Vax or Rug Doctor. You can also hire Rug Doctors from a number of well-known stores if buying and storing one of your own isn’t possible.
De-clutter
We’ll be spending more time indoors during winter, so any clutter accumulated over the madness of the summer holidays will quickly drive you to distraction. Use autumn evenings to have a good clear out of any items you no longer want or need – selling sites like Ebay and Facebook Marketplace make it easier than ever to get rid of things and make a bit of extra cash.
General maintenance
This is the ideal time of year for all those niggly jobs that you don’t get done while there are pub gardens and beaches to be going to during the summer. Whether it’s fixing a broken shelf, oiling a squeaky hinge, replacing the light bulbs with LEDs or securing a wobbly fence panel, get these jobs out of the way so you can relax once the new year rolls round.
Get the professionals in… Change your conservatory roof
If you have an older conservatory, you’ll be familiar with the assumption that they’re too hot in summer and too cold in winter. If you find yourself avoiding your conservatory in the colder months because it’s just too chilly, replacing the polycarbonate roof with energy efficient glass or a solid roof before winter sets in could transform the way you use the space. 55

8 ways to prep your garden for winter/spring Deadhead, prune & plant
Dig out your secateurs and deadhead/ prune any perennial plants with flowers that are dead or looking scruffy. Autumn is also an ideal time of year to plant bulbs ready for spring and summer, especially those that will flower early on to give you a much-needed burst of colour such as crocuses, daffodils and irises.
Put up bird feeders
Tidy up borders & flowerbeds London bronze industrial outdoor wall light £40 dunelm.com
Nature watch lantern seed feeder £3.99 cherry-lane.co.uk
Don the Dachshund draught excluder £28 next.co.uk
The high volume of rain followed by bouts of sun this summer meant most plants and flowers grew like mad – but sadly so did the weeds. Have a good tidy up by pulling up any pesky weeds and digging up annual plants that are past their best. Put in some hardy winter plants such as pansies, heathers and cyclamen to fill any gaps so you’ll enjoy a splash of colour throughout the dingier days.
Feed the soil
If you want healthy, thriving plants come spring, it’s a wise idea to feed the soil now so you have the perfect base for more planting next year. After you’ve had a good weed and tidy up, either use store-bought or homemade compost and spread a generous layer on the top of your borders and flowerbeds. Don’t worry about digging it in – let the worms do that for you!
Clean & store/secure garden furniture
We’ve all seen news reports after winter storms that feature trampolines and wheely bins flying off into the distance. To prevent this happening, this is the time of year to give all your outdoor furniture a good clean and then either store it safely away so it’s still in good condition next year, or secure it so it won’t end up in someone else’s garden in a strong wind.
Re-felt shed roof
If you’ve got a shed and the felt on the roof has seen better days, it’s a good idea to re-felt it before more inclement weather sets in. This will protect the contents of your shed and means you won’t be met with rusty garden tools and mouldy deck chair fabrics come spring. 56
If you don’t already have bird feeders up in your garden, this is a good time of year to support your garden’s winged visitors, whose food sources will become scarcer over the colder months. Not only will you be doing your bit for the local wildlife, you’ll enjoy watching their trips to your garden from your window. It’s also a good opportunity to teach little ones (and older ones!) about the different species.
Protect outside taps
Similar to your hot water pipes indoors, outside taps are prone to damage from frost and ice. If you can’t isolate your garden tap, simply insulate any exposed pipes and fit a tap cover to protect it from the harsher weather.
Give your lawn some TLC
If weeds and moss have also accumulated in your lawn, take the opportunity to tackle them while it doesn’t need cutting as much. Use weed killer treatments and rake up any thatch and moss before applying lawn feed to prepare your grass for the winter months. This is also an ideal time of year to lay new turf, giving it time to bed in and establish before summer.

Roman blinds
Julie Handforth-Doidge Proprietor / Interior designer at JHD Interiors in Norwich
Finish off your interior design with some fabulous Roman blinds.
One of the
most important design choices of a room is how to dress your windows. This can be overlooked so easily and can make or break the room. Roman blinds are a great alternative to curtains, or can be twined with curtains to create a really theatrical feel. Personally, I love the soft texture and folds of a Roman blind, and the design possibilities are endless. Get the window dressing right and you can compliment and enhance all of the other design aspects of the interior. So what is a Roman blind? Roman blinds are made from fabric that is designed to pleat when raised. The blinds are constructed by mounting slats, which are connected to cords or chains, into the back of a fabric panel. When the blind is lifted, the cords pull the slats together and force the blind to fold into pleats. Different types and styles of fabric can be used; from silk and linen to cotton and synthetics. However, it is
worth thinking about the location of the blind and its function whilst selecting the fabric. Remember it must be fit for purpose. Does the fabric need to be hard wearing? Do you require a black out blind? Will the finished blind be traditional or cascade? If you endeavour to ensure you have addressed all of the practical needs first then you will avoid any design compromises at a later date.
incorporate a rechargeable lithium battery system. This means you no longer need to run electrical wiring around the room to accommodate such technologies and have the luxury of operating them from your remote handset. With easy in situ charging, which usually only takes around four hours, and with average usage you will only need to charge the units every
A quality Roman blind will certainly block out the sun when its at it's strongest and will add warmth to your room during the winter months. A quality Roman blind will certainly block out the sun when its at it's strongest and will add warmth to your room during the winter months. These are also known as Roman shades and are often chain operated, having moved on from eyelets and cord. Chains come in a good selection of colours, which compliment the rest of the hardware. Here at JHD Interiors we can accommodate most widths and drops using different gearing ratios, and installing with either a recess mounting or face fixing. If face fixing is selected then we can finish off the design with a bespoke pelmet, the choice is yours. Safety is paramount. This is why all of our blinds are child friendly and the demands of BBSA (British Blind and Shutter Associations) regulations are adhered to. Garden October

Tom Strowlger @garden_with_tom
October
is a very important month in the gardening calendar, it’s our last real chance to get garden jobs done before the nights pull in and temperatures dip further. An exciting job for this month is to plant spring bulbs in preparation for a beautiful floral display in springtime 2022. Our love of spring flowers and the optimism they bring us on those lengthening days of spring is well worth our effort now. We must therefore get planting daffodil, hyacinth, crocus, allium and tulip bulbs into our favourite beds, borders, tubs and pots. Our local garden centres sell all types of spring bulbs to select from, buy and plant. We plant spring bulbs in autumn to allow them time to fully establish their roots before a period of dormancy over winter. They will be ready to spring into action once the temperatures rise in the new year. Make sure to pick borders, beds, planters, tubs and pots with well-drained soil with part to full sun to get the best results from your bulbs. The golden rule for planting spring bulbs is to measure the depth of the bulb and dig a hole three times its depth, this ensures they are deep enough to be protected from ground frosts and hungry wildlife. You may want to dig a shallow

trench for a beautiful formal row of tulips or randomly plant daffodils into your borders; whatever your preference you will need a hand trowel and spade. A bulb wants to be planted the right way up with its root base in the hole first and the top of the bulb facing upwards — if in doubt plant the bulb on its side, this means the roots grow downwards and the green grows upwards. Gently backfill the hole and let the bulbs do the rest, they will give us such a wonderful surprise in spring of next year. Please do follow me on Instagram @garden_with_tom for more seasonal gardening advice and tips.
This is the last month for trimming any hedges and shrubs. Give the garden a general tidy up including greenhouse, ponds and water butts. Check and maintain fences, trellises, sheds and gates ready for windy days.

ble Community Care has been in the same family for nearly four decades and now provides livein care services throughout the UK. Since 1980 we have provided care and have met with thousands of families who are seeking an alternative to moving into a residential care home. Meeting people inevitably leads, either at the time of an assessment or even years later, to questions for which people are looking for answers. Information around all aspects of care is available but the road to finding out, especially at a time of crisis, about specific factors can be difficult and stressful. Able Community Care receives calls and emails on a regular basis with people asking if we can help with their search for information. Recently these questions have been asked of us...
Question: I have recently become disabled and I am in the process of adapting to my new situation. If I have any problems trying to remain as independent as I would like to, is there any legislation which I can quote if I have problems, for example, with my bank? Answer: The Equality Act 2010 legally protects people from discrimination in the workplace and in our wider society. With reference to banks, they have policies in place which must align with the Act and as with other organisations, businesses, etc. have a chat with them, explain your circumstances and ask what is in place to assist you. Question: Are there any fishing lakes in Norfolk with facilities for disabled anglers? Answer: If you Google Spinfish fishing access disabled anglers Norfolk a list of fishing lakes with disabled facilities will be displayed.
Angela Gifford, Managing Director of Able Community Care answers your questions...
Question: I have a care package in place for my elderly father but the times agreed with my care provider are often not kept to or at times, the carers do not arrive. Do I have any re-dress? Answer: The adult social care sector in England still needs to fill around 112,000 job vacancies on any given day according to a report published by Skills for Care in October 2020. The pandemic has probably also meant an increase in this number. If you are purchasing a service and the service you receive is not what you have been told to expect, talk to your provider. If the problems cannot be resolved, the answer is to change your care provider if you are able to do so. To find another provider, Yell.com will bring up the care providers in your area for you to approach. Question: I am disabled and have been told about an information section on trains called Knowledgebase which might be able to help me when I travel. How does this work and what information does it offer? Answer: The National Rail Enquiries (NRE) has a section titled Knowledgebase, which is described as: “A database of static information about the facilities at each of the 2,500+ stations on the network, including specific information about available facilities for those with accessibility needs. Whilst this data is held centrally in the NRE Knowledgebase, it is kept up-to-date by each of the TOCs [Train Operation Companies] responsible for operating and maintaining the stations.” The NRE Knowledgebase contains
around 15 possible accessibility identifiers for each station. They show whether a station provides: hearing induction loops, accessible ticket machines and ticket offices (for example, height-adjustable ticket office counters), ramps to access trains, ‘National Key’ disabled toilets (accessed with a key), step-free access and impaired mobility set-down and pick-up points. The latter includes clearly marked car passenger drop-off zones where blue badge holders can wait for assistance to and from a car park or taxi rank. Question: Is it possible to rent a stair lift if you only need it for a relatively short time? Answer: Yes, this is often a good solution for a person, perhaps after discharge from hospital, who could benefit from using one, but not on a long-term basis. Several well-known companies rent out stairlifts and Google will give you contact details.

The Importance of
Pensions
E C R O V I D SETTLEMENTS in
Pensions are often a couple’s most valuable assets. Jeremy Woodruff looks at the issues involved and how a specially qualified Pensions on Divorce Expert can help resolve them.
For many
couples, the combined value of their pension benefits can often be worth as much, if not more, than the family home. Resolving how to take these into account in a divorce settlement poses many questions. I find when talking to clients who are starting the divorce process that dividing their pensions can be an emotive subject. Some people are especially defensive about their pensions, but Family Courts will expect to see them valued and may insist that benefits are shared where there is a disparity in the pension entitlements that each partner has accrued. This is particularly the case for couples who have been in a long marriage or where one partner has taken charge of raising the family, either not working or working part-time for a number of years. Details of pension savings must be provided in the disclosure process and must be accounted for in the eventual agreement between the couple. Valuing a pension can be challenging. Schemes that are built up using contributions from you and perhaps your employer will have a capital value, but if your pension benefits have been built up in a workplace scheme where benefits are based on your salary and your length of service (known as a defined benefit scheme), the valuation is more complex. When it comes to deciding how to split pension assets fairly, expert advice can be essential. A Pensions on Divorce Expert (known as a PODE) is a specially trained financial adviser who can be invaluable in supporting you if you are in the process of separating finances that include pensions. The adviser will help you get the necessary valuations

Divorce courts often look to help couples achieve equality of income in retirement, for example, and that may vary according to the type of pension each partner holds, their age, tax status, income needs and any additional benefits that may form part of the pension. If you and your partner agree that pension assets should be shared – or if a Family Court decrees that it should happen – it will be done via a pension sharing order. This will normally involve one partner passing pension entitlements to the other: pensions will usually only be shared as pensions, not as cash, so won’t be accessible until the individual reaches the minimum retirement age, which is currently age 55. Once you reach the minimum retirement age, you may be able to withdraw cash from the pension fund, but you should get advice at this stage as withdrawals from the fund may have tax implications and affect your future retirement planning.

Inspiring Women
Varsity Hotel & Spa Cambridge
Kate Morfoot, leading travel writer and founder of www.LoveToEatToTravel.com checks in to the Varsity Hotel and Spa Cambridge, the hotel in the heart of the city with the best views in town.
The
Varsity Hotel and Spa in Cambridge is a perfect getaway situated right in the heart of everything that’s delightful about the historic city. It’s been ages since we last visited Cambridge with friends before lockdown. There was a real buzz about the city because this was the first day back for excited Cambridge students about to start their new year, and because the sun was out for the first time in weeks. Launched in 2011, the new-build hotel has plush modern rooms and a buzzy sixth floor restaurant with a fabulous birds’ eye view of the city. The Varsity sits amidst the city’s bustling Quayside area and, backing onto the picturesque River Cam, it is located in one of the most attractive spots in Cambridge. The top two floors of the hotel feature floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing guests breath-taking views of the surrounding area from the comfort of their room, including St John’s College spires, the lush green of Midsummer Common or the punts gliding down the Cam. It was a scorching 28 degrees on a September afternoon when we checked in. The rooftop bar adorned with colourful flowerpots and trees and a fabulous view of St John’s College spires and many other famous colleges, was a welcome respite, before we tackled all that awaited outside the calm of the hotel. Here you will find an impressive list of cocktails and mocktails, which could tempt you to leave the sightseeing behind. We stayed in a Fellows king room with a four poster king size comfortable bed. This luxurious and spacious bedroom had floor-to-ceiling windows with a balcony
66
and sofas and tables outside for drinks and nibbles, enabling us to make the most of the impressive scenic views over the city and the nearby park. There was a large walk-in shower with my favourite Elemis products to use. Despite being in the centre of town, the hotel is perfectly located off the main street, making it incredibly quiet, apart from the odd rattle of a cyclist’s bike or ring of a bell! Taking advantage of the weather and the handy location next to the river, we headed for the punts at nearby Mill Lane. Although I’ve done this before, I cannot resist a meander down the River Cam, it’s wonderful to see the historic colleges from the water. This time, I opted for a chauffeured punt as I had discovered that punting was not my forte on my last attempt. Equally, Cambridge is a wonderful place to walk, discovering some of the 31 colleges of the University of Cambridge, many chapels and churches. You can literally breathe its past in the present. We enjoyed shopping in interesting lanes, finding independent boutiques and wandering around the famous market. Mixed in with trendy cafes, bistros and high-end eateries, it makes for a fun adventure of retail therapy and grazing. The Glassworks Health Club is located in the adjoining building and provides a cutting-edge health club with state-ofthe-art gym equipment and yoga, pilates, aerobics and spinning classes on site. All hotel guests receive complimentary membership to The Glassworks during their stay. The Spa is comprised of a beautiful Jacuzzi that overlooks the river, a sauna
and steam room and eight private rooms offering treatments from facials and massage to Jessica nail treatments and Aveda hairdressing. We enjoyed the use of the facilities. While bubbling away in the Jacuzzi that overlooks the river, punts glided by the very large window. We weren’t sure whether it was tinted oneway glass, but hoped it was. The Varsity hotel’s SIX River Bar Steakhouse & Grill is located on the sixth floor, on the Quayside, with magnificent views of the river. Head Chef Angus Martin locally sources much of his menu’s ingredients. He is committed to serving the most tender, full flavoured steak, only using the finest prime beef, aged for 28 days. My husband chose crispy whitebait to start, then he enjoyed a delicious 8oz fillet of beef steak from the grill menu. I chose the burrata, tomato caponata with wild rocket on chargrilled toast, followed by chargrilled leg of Saffron Walden lamb, with braised cabbage and rich gravy from the wood stone oven menu. Along with fabulous service, the food tasted good and despite the restaurant being incredibly busy, we didn’t have to wait long before each course was served. There’s a wide choice of food, guests can enjoy fresh fish, great vegetarian and vegan dishes, pizzas and homemade puddings. To match the varied food menu, the wine list, gin and cocktail lists are impressive! This hotel is perfect for getting truly immersed in the culture and charm of Cambridge life and is the ideal base to enjoy good food and drinks, sight-see, punt, shop and relax.
