t’s showtime! With the ITT Hub at Farnborough International and the Commercial Vehicle Show at the NEC next month, plus for those with a heavier fleet, the Road Transport Expo Dan Gilkes, at Stoneleigh in June, there editor is plenty of opportunity for vehicle buyers to take a look at the latest commercials on the market. For those thinking of attending, we have previews of two of these events in this issue. If you can’t make it, we’ll also have full reports following all of these shows. How soon you might actually be able to get your hands on any of the new vans on offer, might be another question however, as long lead times continue to affect the supply of new vehicles in all sectors. While things are starting to ease, manufacturers report continued delays for many models. The government’s new Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Strategy promises £1.6bn for increased charging points across the country. It is hoping to achieve a tenfold increase, to have 300,000 public charging points by 2030, the date when it will no longer be possible to purchase petrol and diesel-powered cars and vans. A £450m Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) fund aims to boost EV hubs and onstreet charging for those without driveways, while the existing £950m Rapid Charging Fund will continue to support the rollout of at least 6,000 super-fast charge points across England’s motorways by 2035. Having recently driven quite a lot of miles in electric vehicles, I can confirm that this money is much needed. When things work as intended, charging an electric van is simplicity itself. Simply pull up, plug-in, swipe your credit card and go for a coffee. When it doesn’t work, it is the most frustrating, time-consuming, infuriating nightmare imaginable.

News Van values remain high, but caution warned Demand for used vans continues, with average LCV values at remarketing company BCA staying above £10,000 for the third consecutive month. However, despite this strong performance, the company said that it is apparent that external pressures affecting the wider economy are starting to be felt. While there is strong demand for the best vehicles, professional buyers are less enthusiastic about those with cosmetic or mechanical issues. “External economic factors are increasingly having a greater effect on the wider used LCV marketplace, which is largely driven by the needs of the small business and independent trader sectors,” said Stuart Pearson, BCA COO.
ic and are now having to deal with rising interest rates, increased energy and fuel costs and the widespread cost-of-living squeeze. “While an LCV is a necessary tool of the trade for many small businesses, we have seen demand from professional buyers hot-up for strong vehicles in the best condition demand which is pushing up values for the best for the best prepared, higher grade vehicles, but creatvehicles ing pressure on lower grade, older, higher mileage vehicles that need cosmetic or mechanical refurbishment before sale.”

Heavy haulage and storage Moving solutions provider easyStorage is building a fleet of 7.2-tonne Daily box vans. With 27 of the bright orange vans already in service, the company has an additional 12 Daily’s in build and eight more on order. Supplied by Glasgow dealer AM Phillip, the Dailys have a massive 3.8m high Tekbo body with kerbside loading doors, that can accept three easyPod packing crates. “Our easyPods weigh around 1-tonne when loaded and the majority of our jobs cover two 4 VANUSER • APRIL 2022
or more,” said easyStorage CEO Tim Slesinger. “We knew we wanted to leverage load capacity with fewer journeys, so the ability to carry a trio in one go was going to be the best.” The box body also houses a range of pull-out platforms, ramps and supports that the driver can use to assist in safe loading and unloading. Each Daily, which is supplied in Business trim with air suspension, is expected to cover up to 30,000 miles per year on a five-year replacement cycle.
Northgate Vehicle Hire has announced a package of driver safety solutions aimed at increasing fleet efficiency and driver wellbeing. The Safe Driver initiative includes driver training, safety and compliance functions and is offered to all businesses across the UK, not just to the firm’s rental customers. Developed in response to a 2021 customer survey, where companies put drivers first, with wellbeing, safety and compliance listed as their top priorities, Safe Driver is supported by a range of compliance checks. This includes licence and grey fleet checks, driver and fleet audits, to help companies identify and reduce costs. “Since the beginning of the pandemic, LCV drivers have become recognised as key workers as they have played an integral part in keeping the country moving,” said Neil McCrossan, Northgate’s sales and marketing director. “More companies are proactively looking after their drivers’ wellbeing more closely, to help reduce risks for when they drive on company business.”

Small savings The Chancellor’s Spring Statement resulted in a 5p cut in Fuel Duty, to 52.95p per litre, but did little else to help van operating businesses in these challenging times. Nexus Vehicle Rental welcomed the reduction but was disappointed to see little support for those moving to an electric future.
“
Mitigate rising costs through more effective management
“With fuel costs at a record high, we welcome the announcement of a cut to fuel duty by 5p a litre, only the second time this has happened in the last 20 years,” said CEO David Brennan. “Whilst this may offer some relief to individuals and businesses operating their fleets, it is estimated to only be around £3.30 per tank. It is clear that the government continues to sign-post us towards a green future with the announcement of relief on energy saving measures, with 0% VAT on all energy saving materials, however it was disappointing to not hear of any further support offered to the electric vehicle industry. “As we move ever-closer to the 2030 ban on petrol and diesel vehicles, there is still more that needs to be done to support EV manufacturers, to ensure they are more affordable for businesses.” Matthew Walters, head of consultancy services and customer value at LeasePlan agreed, saying: “As welcome as this duty cut is, it is likely to offer only limited relief to squeezed budgets. The average cost of a litre of petrol has risen by more than 5p over the past week, if that trend continues, the Chancellor’s discount could effectively be wiped out within days. “Of course, what it most helpful for the future is strong, consistent, longterm incentives for electric motoring, so that more people can afford to
switch to EVs and avoid high prices at the pump.” While high fuel prices are squeezing van operators, they are hammering those running heavy trucks. The Road Haulage Association (RHA) said the cut relates to around a £2,000 a year saving on a typical HGV and called for additional help for hauliers as costs continue to rise. “Cutting fuel duty is a common sense move and will be a boost for the economy, but more could have been done,” said Rod McKenzie, RHA executive director. “The chancellor missed an opportunity to announce a rebate to relieve more pressure on businesses. We’ll continue to press the government hard for this measure as firms grapple with huge operating cost hikes.” “I think the underlying message here is a small ’p’ political one,” said FleetCheck managing director Peter Golding. “Following the pandemic, when the government stepped in and took a high degree of responsibility for keeping the economy on a sure footing, we’re now returning to a more traditional situation, when interventions will be much more limited. Businesses and their fleets are going to have to mitigate rising costs through more effective management, rather than looking for more dramatic forms of external help.”

INTERVIEW
VAN SALES GROWTH AT RENAULT TRUCKS As the truck supplier adds Trafic to its LCV line-up, Van User catches up with UK and Ireland head of LCV Grahame Neagus
R
enault Trucks sold more than 4,300 Master vans and chassis in the UK last year, up from around 800 in 2017. As the truck manufacturer starts to offer the smaller Trafic van alongside Master, it aims to raise that total to more than 8,000 registrations by 2025, 5,000 being the heavier Master and 3,000 the smaller Trafic van. The company is also planning for 10% of its van sales to be full electric E-Tech models in 2023. As mentioned previously, Renault Trucks and Renault (supplier of the vans and cars) are two separate companies, the truck business is part of Volvo Group. However, for the truck company, which uses a red diamond logo rather than the yellow of the car firm, vans have become a major part of the business. The same is increasingly true for its dealer base. “For the dealers, having Trafic alongside Master doubles their LCV portfolio,” said Grahame Neagus, head of LCV for the UK and Ireland. “There are lots of businesses using Master that want something smaller.” However, the firm’s 73 dealer outlets are very much truck as well as van sites, 8 VANUSER • APRIL 2022
with the 24/7 opening and rapid backup demanded by the heavy haulage industry. Yet, over the last five years, vans have gone from being an add-on that sits at the back of a showroom or yard, to a sales area with dedicated staff, that have realised the value of LCV registrations to their customers and to the dealership bottom line. Within the network, there are around 25-30 dealers that have really embraced van sales, though all outlets can sell and provide service and back-up. Neagus believes that these dealers are prospering in the van world because they are offering the knowledge and expertise required to sell hard working, high mileage trucks. They use what he calls consultative selling, working to understand the customer’s operation and placing an emphasis on Total Cost of Ownership. They also have the expertise to find the right body and equipment for a range of industry sectors. They also have a dedicated product to offer.
Though built by the yellow-badged Renault in the same factory as other Master product, Renault Trucks has been able to specify its own Master offering, including things like a wider rear wheel track that makes it easier to load pallets. The same will be true of the upcoming Trafic Red Edition, which he insists will not come in Renault’s standard Business and Sport trims. “Having the opportunity to sell Trafic under our own specification will be invaluable,” said Neagus. “We’ve proved it with Master. There is a lot more that can be done for professional logistics businesses. We don’t want to be a me-too supplier. We want to be a go-to supplier.” Renault Trucks will have its first Trafic stock available from the summer, with full production by the end of the year. Renault Trucks will take the wraps off an unusual LCV conversion at this year’s ITT Hub exhibition in May. For a full preview of the show see page 26.

All the buzz
Volkswagen references its past models, with a view very firmly fixed on the future, says Dan Gilkes
10 VANUSER • APRIL 2022
olkswagen Commercial Vehicles has finally revealed the production-ready ID. Buzz Cargo and its ID. Buzz people-carrying twin, ahead of a full launch later this year. Originally seen in concept form as far back as 2001, the shape of the ID. Buzz Cargo closely resembles the iconic VW Bulli T1 microbus of the 1950s. However, beneath that smooth, single-box body, lies VW’s MEB electric chassis, already seen in the ID.3 and ID.4 cars, but stretched to new lengths in ID. Buzz Cargo. Indeed, with an overall length of 4,712mm and a wheelbase of 2,988mm, the van is 20cm longer than the biggest Caddy and 20cm shorter than the base Transporter T6.1. Thanks in part to reardrive, the turning circle is just 11m, similar to a Golf, making it an ideal urban van. It boasts a load volume of 3.9m3, in a van with a roof height of just 1,938mm, making it possible to access underground car parks. A longer wheelbase model will be added to the
line-up once the initial van enters production. For the first time, the company has engineered a load-through facility in the bulkhead, allowing longer
objects to pass through under the passenger seat. While the payload allowance for the initial model is a rather disappointing 600kg, the van can tow
up to 1-tonne. The ID. Buzz has a 77kWh battery under its flat floor, powering a rear-mounted 150kW (204hp) electric motor, that drives the rear axle. VW is claiming a potential operating range of up to 250 miles, with a maximum speed of 90mph, which should be enough for many LCV operators. The van has up to 11kW AC charging and a DC rapid charge capability of up to 170kW. This would allow a 5-80% topup in around 30 minutes using a suitable DC rapid charger. The electrical system under the van is bi-directional, allowing drivers and companies to feed unused energy from the batteries back into a home or office networks, when the van is not being used. This would require a bi-directional wall box however. The ID. Buzz Cargo will also have a 230V outlet in the rear, allowing trades to power electrical tools on site, or drivers to run laptops and other devices. While the passenger-carrying vehicles will roll on up to 21” alloy wheels, commercial model will use a more sensible 18” steel rim, though alloys will be available as an option. LED headlights and rear lights will be standard on both though, along with a host of ADAS driver assistance systems. Harder-wearing black bumpers should also be on offer on the van models. It’s a similar story inside the van, where the Cargo model will use more durable dark grey plastics than the offwhite found in the initial batch of passenger models. However, all will come with two full colour screens for all driv-

ing data and infotainment. Unfortunately, the vans have the same fiddly touch and slide controls for volume and heater functions as the latest Caddy. That said, the ID. Buzz Cargo comes with a “Hey ID” voice control function, that allows the driver to call for various operations without having to take their hands of the wheel. As part of the ADAS offering, all of the vans will come with a Car2X system, to identify problems ahead. This means that the van will be able to communicate with other Car2X vehicles nearby, to spot potential hazards and hold-ups in real time. It will also use Travel Assist, with swarm data, to offer partially automated driving functions, including assisted lane-changing on motorways. The vans will use this communication system to facilitate over-the-air updates to software and technology. There are no prices yet and we’ll have to wait a little longer for final specifications. Van User should be driving the van in the summer, the order books will open in the UK in July, for deliveries to start in October. VWCV is already working with a number of body builders to be able to supply racking, fridge van and other specialist conversions by the time of the launch. The ID. Buzz Cargo will be available from all of VW’s Van Centres and the company is expecting a mix of fleet and SME customers for the new model. “There are a lot of trades swapping out of Caddy or downsizing from Transporter,” said product manager Alice Axtell. “Many of those customers are targeting CO2 reductions.”
Volkswagen and Ford have confirmed that Ford will have access to VW’s MEB electric platform, as part of the collaboration that has already seen the latest Transit Connect using Caddy running gear and interior technology. In turn, Volkswagen’s next Amarok pick-up will be based on the new generation Ranger that will be launched later this year. Ford had originally planned to produce a single model using MEB, with a total volume of around 600,000 units. That number has now been doubled as Ford looks to grow its electric range. Ford has promised three EV cars and four e-LCVs by 2024, as part of its Ford+ plan. The company will launch E-Transit this year, followed by electric versions of Transit Custom and Tourneo Custom in 2023, then Transit Courier and a Courier-based multi-purpose vehicle in 2024.

LAUNCH
Daily update Iveco’s model year 22 Daily features a host of improvements, from updated engines and transmissions, to air suspension and advanced connectivity, says Dan Gilkes
T
he recently updated Iveco Daily may look very similar to its predecessors, but under the skin there have been some important updates. The firm’s 2.3-litre diesel engine, which has power outputs of 116-156hp, conforms to both light and heavy-duty test cycles, meeting Euro 6-D Final and Euro VI-E respectively. The engines use double SCR after-treatment, that fits within the same space as the previous system, so there is no problem with existing bodies and conversions. Improvements contribute to a potential 6% fuel saving in regular use. The heavy-duty 3.0-litre diesel motor now offers 160-207hp, while the 3.0-litre engine can still be had with
12 VANUSER • APRIL 2022
CNG gas power, offering 136hp. While many customers take Daily with the eight-speed automatic transmission, there is an improved six-speed manual gearbox on offer too, that can handle up to 15% more torque. This offers added performance in applications where a power-take-off is required. Daily now comes with optional AirPro pneumatic suspension, that continuously adapts to road conditions to deliver a smoother ride. Air-Pro Continuous Damping Control makes calculations concerning the road surface every 10 milliseconds, providing the ideal pressure in each shock absorber to deliver the best dynamic reaction. This contributes to a 25% reduction in vibration in the cab, making life easier for the driver.
The driver can also choose between Soft, Load and Auto settings. Soft prioritises comfort, while Load optimises handling and roll control in fully laden conditions. As the name suggests, the Auto setting automatically self-adjusts to meet the needs of the vehicle at the time. Iveco claims that Air-Pro can reduce roll angle in cornering by up to 30%, improving safety and load protection. As with all air suspension systems, it can also be used to adjust the height of the vehicle, with a memory function making it possible to pre-set previously visited loading bays. Iveco has taken the next step in vehicle connectivity with the new Daily, which now comes with Iveco Driver Pal. This vocal and digital driver companion uses Amazon Alexa technology to allow the driver to interact with the vehicle and with other drivers nearby. MyIveco lets the driver check the health of the vehicle, manage the navigation and ask for driving tips if required. MyCommunity allows the driver to communicate with other drivers, exchanging advice about unplanned stops and delays, using information about traffic congestion and disruptions. The system even has automatic translation, for those venturing further afield.
Less technical perhaps, but no less necessary, Daily also gets completely new seating, with the central pads of the cushion and backrest made of memory foam. This moulds to the driver’s body, to better distribute weight, cutting pressure peaks by up to 30%, for greatly improved long distance comfort. Iveco has announced that it will bring a second-generation electric Daily to the market by the end of this year. The company reports that companies are already asking for an electric option in fleet tenders, as we rapidly approach the 2030 cut-off for the sale of diesel and petrol-powered vans and it predicts a UK electric van market this year of at least 25,000 vehicles.
“
The driver can choose between Soft, Load and Auto suspension settings The Daily Electric van and chassis will initially be seen at the IAA exhibition in Hanover, in September. Battery technology has moved on since the first Daily Electric was launched and Iveco will be keen to break into the heavy electric van market. It believes that changes to total cost of ownership calculations, which take into account the reduced maintenance requirement and lower fuel cost per mile of an EV, will see rapidly growing demand for the vans when they arrive next year. One area where the company’s current models will help Iveco take a lead ,will be in the broad choice of converted chassis that are available to suit varying customer needs. Iveco offers a growing range of Driveaway ready-bodied models, all of which can be supplied as a finished vehicle by the dealer with the same unlimited mileage, three-year warranty as the base chassis. Iveco already offers dropside and tipper conversions, Luton box vans and curtain-side vehicles, under the Driveaway banner. However, it has been working with a diverse group of bodybuilders and converters to offer a much broader range of bodies. Possible additions to the range in the future include a 7-tonne recovery vehicle, a 3.5-tonne Traffic Management vehicle, a tipper with secure storage box behind the cab and a welfare vehicle. ROAD TO ZERO
Charger strategy
Plug-in Van Grant extended The government has extended access to the Plugin Van Grant for an additional two years, until 2024/25. The move is expected to support the purchase of thousands of EV vans and trucks, as existing grants have already helped with the purchase of more than 26,000 electric vans and trucks in the UK since the scheme was launched in 2021. “As demand for electric vehicles continues to grow at speed, this extension to our grant scheme will allow tens of thousands more vans to be purchased, transporting goods in a way which is kinder to our environment,” said transport minister Trudy Harrison. The move has been welcomed by the transport industry. Denise Beedell, public policy manager at Logistics UK said: “Given the current pressures on public finances, Logistics UK is pleased to see the government has heeded our calls to provide support to help the van sector to meet net zero targets. The level of funding within this announcement demonstrates a clear recognition of
the importance of this essential sector.” “Extending the Plug-in Van Grant is welcome as it will encourage more operators to make the switch to electric vehicles over the next three years,” said Mike Hawes, chief executive of the SMMT. “While the van market saw record electric uptake last year, it remains some distance behind cars, with battery electric vans making up just 3.6% of registrations. The speed of uptake must be increased, which requires incentives and significant investment in EV charge points, especially those that meet the specific needs of commercial vehicles.” • The government has also decided to continue the Category B licence derogation for alternatively fuelled vehicles, that allows vans with a gross weight of up to 4.25-tonnes to be driven on a car licence, in recognition of the additional weight of the batteries.
The government has launched a £1.6bn Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Strategy, that calls for a tenfold increase in the number of public charging points, to around 300,000, by 2030. The strategy will also introduce legislation to make charging points more reliable, accessible and user-friendly. “For too long many charge point operators have tried to force customers to use only their networks, by making them pay a membership fee or download an app to charge,” said Phil Shadbolt, tech entrepreneur behind electric vehicle charging brand EZ-Charge. “Forcing operators to do away with these kinds of outdated practices and make the UK’s charging network work for everybody will be a big step forward.”
BP charge card Fuel supplier BP has launched an SME Fuel and Charge card, for fleets of 1-10 vehicles, to help smaller companies make a switch to electric vans. The card provides access to more than 8,500 bp pulse public charging points and more than 3,400 fuel stations. It offers a simple solution for both electric charging and fuel purchases, with access to BP’s 24/7 online portal, to easily control fuel card use.
Movianto opts for EV trial Healthcare logistics specialist Movianto is trialling its first electric eSprinter, supplied by dealer Midlands Truck & Van. The company has 120 temperature-controlled vans and 100 uninsulated light commercials, all of which are Mercedes-Benz Sprinter models. Now though, it is looking to delivery vaccines and medical supplies with the battery-powered model. “We take great care to consider the effect of our business on the environment and are always looking at ways to minimise its impact,” said head of fleet Mervyn McIntyre. “This trial is helping us to understand how electric distribution vehicles can fit into our fleet, what attributes they offer and any operational issues they might present. The eSprinter offers all the proven benefits of a Mercedes-
Benz van but with zero exhaust emissions. As with any battery-powered vehicle there’s a limit to its range, but the electric driveline also brings advantages in other areas. The
van is very smooth, easy to drive in traffic and its near-silent driveline is much less likely to disturb customers or their neighbours when making deliveries.” APRIL 2022 • VANUSER 15
As the show season gets under way, Dan Gilkes previews the welcome return of the CV Show, and after it's successful launch last the year, the ITT Hub.
CV SHOW
TIME TO LOOK FORWARD The Commercial Vehicle Show is back, running from May 24-26, in Halls 4 and 5 of the NEC in Birmingham. One of the UK’s largest road transport exhibitions will offer its established mix of vehicle manufacturers, body builders, component and service suppliers, providing operators with a chance to catch up on the latest technologies on offer to the vital logistics sector. “Despite the challenges the industry has faced in recent months, it is time to look ahead, to prepare businesses large and small for the future,” said show director Murray Ellis. “The 2022 Commercial Vehicle Show is the place for everyone within the commercial vehicle sector, offering the ideal opportunity to see new products and services, gather information and network with industry colleagues to discuss the most important issues facing SMEs and larger operators.” There won’t be any truck manufacturers at this year’s event and the number of van manufacturers is lower than before. However, visitors to the exhibition will still be able to see a wide range of bodybuilders, component and service suppliers. There will also be live discussions in the Future Transport 16 VANUSER • APRIL 2022
Theatre again. The show is free to attend and you can register online to speed your entry into the halls. These are just some of the stands that should be worth a visit.
FORD
Ford likes to dominate the entrance to the show and this year will be no exception, with a host of vehicles across its two stands, that sit on the split between the two halls. However, though the vans on show will include the allnew E-Transit, Ford’s focus this year is in fact connectivity, with the launch of Ford Pro.

Ford’s focus this year is connectivity, with the launch of Ford Pro
Encompassing FordLiive, launched last year, Ford Pro will bring together connected vehicles, data services, charging opportunities and other services that can be accessed by vans equipped with Ford Pro connectivity. For that reason, the current Transit Courier and the last of the Fiesta van models will not be present, as neither is equipped with an on-board modem. Indeed, as the Fiesta car is now only available with five doors, the Fiesta Van looks set to disappear from the price list once again. ROAD TEST | CADDY 4MOTION
FOUR SURE If you need a bit of extra traction but don’t want the expense and size of a pick-up, VW’s Caddy is a possible solution, says Dan Gilkes
T
he dedicated all-wheel drive van market is relatively small, with the likes of Toyota’s Land Cruiser Commercial at one end and the Iveco Daily 4x4 at the other. These are true off-road vehicles that can tackle the toughest of site conditions, while offering decent on-road travel. Of course, the 4x4 pick-up market achieves much the same thing, but without the load area privacy afforded by a panel van. When it comes to a more road-biased approach, Volkswagen’s 4Motion driveline has long been a favourite, offering primarily frontwheel drive, with the rear axle coming into play when needed.
Powertrain For the fifth-generation Caddy, the 4Motion driveline is only available
with the most powerful 122hp version of the 2.0-litre diesel engine. While this engine can be paired with a six-speed manual gearbox or the seven-speed DSG in two-wheel drive models, the 4Motion is manual only, though that is no hardship. VW claims the same fuel consumption for both the manual and the DSG transmission with this engine, so the drop of around 5-6mpg listed for the 4Motion model is all down to the running gear. Despite not being in use all the time, the driveline will cost a little bit more at the pumps over the life of the van. The 122hp engine, which delivers a sturdy 320Nm of torque, propels the Caddy with ease, even in its longer Maxi layout. It’s an easy companion for longer drives and you recontinued on p32

ROAD TEST | CADDY 4MOTION
continued from p31 ally wouldn’t know that the van has four-wheel drive abilities unless you need them. For those that do need to travel down the less beaten track though, the reassurance of all-wheel drive will certainly be welcomed.
Load carrying capacity The 4Motion model can be had in the shorter Caddy or this longer Maxi model. The standard Caddy carries 3.1m3, while this Maxi can handle 3.7m3. The 4Motion models have a higher gross weight, 2.4-tonnes in the Maxi version versus 2.3-tonnes for the same model with two-wheel drive, but carry slightly less load, due to the extra weight of that driven rear axle. For this 4Motion Maxi that means 675kg in Commerce trim. The van can pull up to a 1.5-tonne trailer though. In the cab As mentioned, the test van arrived in Commerce trim. That includes the Composition Audio system, with DAB radio, 6.5” colour touchscreen, Bluetooth and two USB-C slots. You get cruise control, an electronic parking brake, electrically adjustable door mirrors, electric windows, a multi-function steering wheel and Start/Stop technology. You also get a host of ADAS equipment as standard, including Auto Post 32 VANUSER • APRIL 2022
Collision Braking, Brake Assist, Driver Alert, Front Assist with Pedestrian Monitoring and City Emergency Braking. Moving to Commerce Plus would have added Climatic air conditioning, but the VW Press Office had ticked that box for us, along with satellite navigation. The Caddy interior is a comfortable place to spend the day, well-built and durable. It’s all a bit sombre and black, but the cabin feels like it will look exactly like that after a hard three or four-year first life. We’ve mentioned before the haptic sliders for temperature and infotainment volume, so won’t dwell on them again here. Suffice to say, further exposure has still not made us big fans.
On the road While 122hp is certainly more than enough for a van of this size, it never feels over-engined and the Caddy Maxi is a relaxing drive, both in the town and on the dual carriageway. Steering and suspension are secure and reassuring and the van is easy to place on a country road. The fifth generation Caddy, with its standard full bulkhead, is much quieter than previous models, especially those with a half mesh guard. Even at motorway speeds, it offers a comfortable, smooth ride that makes longer journeys a pleasure.
“
The Caddy interior is a comfortable place to spend the day
Conclusion Volkswagen’s 4Motion driveline is not meant to make the Caddy a mud-plugging off-roader. It is intended for those users that require occasional additional grip and traction, when the terrain gets slippery. That could be due to weather conditions, for those that live in more northerly parts, or for drivers that regularly have to tackle forest trails, construction haul roads or agricultural tracks. The fact that there is little more to say about 4Motion is more of a compliment than a criticism. It is there in the background if needed, yet remains unnoticed until that time. Admittedly, there is a small price to pay in fuel use, but it is not as drastic as some high-riding 4x4 vehicles. In the higher Commerce Pro trim, where you can choose a 122hp engine with a manual gearbox and two or fourwheel drive, the 4Motion is £2,750 more than the front-driven van. For those that require it, that will no doubt be money well spent. Van User Rating – 4.5

ROAD TEST | E-BERLINGO CREW CAB
MULTI PURPOSE The crew van concept is not the preserve of diesel-powered models, as Citroen gives the e-Berlingo a second row of seats, says Dan Gilkes
I
f you need to carry people and goods or tools, then a crew van is often the only way forward. Adding a second row of seats behind the driver can deliver the best of both worlds, though it can also have an effect on carrying capacity. With the e-Berlingo Crew, Citroen has tried to offer buyers a solution to all of their problems.
Powertrain As with all e-Berlingo vans, the Crew model uses the 50kWh battery and 100kW motor familiar to buyers of the compact Stellantis van. It delivers up to 171 miles of driving range and comes with both Type 2 AC charging and up to 100kW capacity DC rapid charging capability. That means that it should be possible to top-up to 80% of power within 30 minutes on a sufficiently powerful CCS charger.
34 VANUSER • APRIL 2022
Load carrying capacity The Crew van is built on the longer of the two e-Berlingo models, that would normally offer up to 3.8m3 of load volume. With the rear seats in place, that drops to 1.8m3, which is still reasonable and more than enough for power tools and materials to be used by the team in the van. The Crew model has a steel mesh bulkhead that sits behind the rear seats, locking into holes in the roof and the sides of the van. The rear seat can be split 40/60 and the side with the single 40% seat has a door in the bulkhead, allowing longer loads to be passed through. You can also fold the front passenger seat flat, extending the load area further. If that’s not enough load volume, the other rear seat can be folded flat and the bulkhead released, to let it slide forward and relocate behind the front seats. This in effect provides the full long wheelbase load area of the L2 van. There is a slight drop in available payload, to 721kg, but that is unlikely to be a deal breaker. Talking of weight, if there were windows in the sliding side doors, it would no longer be possible to reclaim the VAT on the van, as it is unable to carry 1 tonne. However, with the lack of windows, it is still possible to reclaim the VAT, saving buyers a 20% increase in initial cost.
“
The Crew model has a steel mesh bulkhead that sits behind the rear seats
In the cab The Crew van is only offered in top of the range Enterprise Pro specification. That means air conditioning, rear parking sensors, cruise control and a carpeted floor in the cab. You get electric windows and heated mirrors, tyre pressure monitoring and an acoustic vehicle alert system for slow speed use. You also get a DAB radio with steering wheel-mounted controls, an 8” touchscreen and smartphone compatibility. Conclusion The e-Berlingo Crew Van really is a bit of a Swiss Army knife, offering a wide range of layouts and load carrying/seating options. Add in zero emission motoring and you have a van that could meet the needs of many SMEs and tradespeople. Van User Rating – 4.5
