MAKING IT COME ALIVE By MEREDITH CREEK Contributing Writer

sing the most modern technology in his trade, George Geiger is preserving what, for some, is many years of memories. The 65-year-old has spent more than three decades in the taxidermy business and just in February of this year finally opened a retail shop. “I started out doing it for myself. I’m an avid outdoors person; a fisherman, hunter,” he said. “I graduated high school, completed two tours in Vietnam, went to college and just kept thinking about doing (taxidermy).” Geiger attended the Northwestern School of Taxidermy in Omaha, Neb. and was working in a shop set up in his basement. He said eventually his wife had asked him to move the shop due to the number of people that were coming in and out.

Jim Weller is the latest winner of the "find the shopping bag" contest. He won a $50 gift certificate from KFC. Look for another hidden bag in this week’s Shopper. Last week’s bag was found on page 8. Please note that bags that are on a Highland County Shopper logo – ones on the front page and in sales representative’s ads, for example – do not count.

RECOGNIZING EPHEMERALS
Ephemerals? Have you heard someone speak about spring ephemerals and wonder what they were referring to? Welcome to the club! Ephemerals last for only a short time each spring. I used to refer to the wildflowers that appear each spring as simply that – wildflowers. Now I realize that I need to be more specific and describe these wildflowers as springtime ephemerals! We have a favorite trail that we hike close to Cowan Lake each spring that bursts with blooms of my favorite spring wildflowers. My husband has finally learned that he needs to slow down for this hike so that I can enjoy the scenery and take photographs. This year I neglected to refresh my memory by looking through the pages of my favorite reference book, “Wildflowers of Ohio,” authored by Stan Tekiela. This book is handy to carry and groups wildflowers by color and then within each color section, the flowers are arranged by the size of the flower, or flower cluster from small to large. As we headed down the trail, I realized that my book was at home on the counter, but at least we had a camera! To my surprise, the first wildflowers that we spotted were Mayapples! Most of the leaves were up and uncurled, but there were no flowers blooming. Some people use the blooming of Mayapples as an indicator of when to start looking for the elusive Morel mushroom. As we walked we spotted masses of Yellow Trout Lilies. The common name “Trout” comes from its mottled leaves, which resemble the coloring of a Brown Trout. The Yellow Trout Lily reproduces mostly by underground bulbs. It may take up to seven years for a plant to be mature enough to flower. Further up the trail we discovered Large-Flowered Bellwort. This 10- to 20-inch single-stemmed plant has one to three drooping yellow flowers per stem. When the flowers are mature, they look wrinkled and droopy. Tucked under these larger plants were Toadshade Trilliums! The single maroon red flower poised directly on top of the whorl of leaves makes this an easy trillium to identify. This is only one of the eight species of trillium in Ohio. Then we came upon a mystery! I couldn’t decide whether we had discovered Dutchman’s Breeches or Squirrel-corn! I’m sure that you are all thinking… “well that isn’t a mystery
DEAR ABBY: I'm confused about the protocol in thanking or repaying someone after staying several nights at their home. My feeling is, if you're staying with people, the nicest way to thank them for their hospitality is to pay for most, if not all, the lunches and dinners you share with them when you dine out. That way, you lessen the monetary burden of your visit, and it gives you a chance to say "thank you" for the use of their home. Some visitors seem to think that when they come to your home, you should not only put them up, but also pay for all their activities while you show them your town. What is correct? Or is it a matter of preference? -- VISITING FROM PHOENIX
VIRGINIA BLUEBELLS … one bloom resembles upside-down pants.” The mystery was … what does the Squirrel-corn flower resemble? When I looked both wildflowers up in my reference book, I was relieved to find that Squirrel-corn is often confused with Dutchman’s Breeches, which grows in a similar habitat and often side-by-side. The leaves of the two plants are nearly identical, but Squirrel-corn’s flowers are heartshaped. With the strange heat wave that we experienced in March, we found that most of the Bloodroot flowers were fading. One of the earliest plants, it emerges from nearly frozen soil, flowering well before trees leaf out. Its flowers open on sunny days, closing tightly at night. Leaves unroll in full sun, curling up around the flower stalk at night and on cloudy days. These flowers lack nectar, quickly dropping petals after pollination, leaving a large, pointed, pod-like capsule that splits to reveal many brown seeds. As we admired these early spring ephemerals, I realized that the Buckeye trees close by were blooming! What a strange spring we have had so far. The one springtime ephemeral on
my “wish” list that we didn’t see? Jack-in-the-Pulpit. I did get to see them emerging this week at the governor’s residence, along with Pawpaw trees in full bloom. Don’t forget that we are starting Helpline Tuesdays from 10:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. on April 10 and April 17. A Master Gardener will be at the Brown County OSUE office to answer gardening questions. You can also submit your Helpline questions to Master Gardener Mike Hannah at mhannah2@msn.com. Mark your calendars for the two remaining workshops being presented at the Fincastle campus of Southern State College. April 19 the workshop will be “Herbs” and the May 17 session will be “Planting in Containers.” All workshops are free to the public and are held in the library starting at 6 p.m. Have you planted your cabbage, lettuce, Swiss Chard, and other cool weather crops? The rabbits haven’t figured out a way to get inside the cabbage patch yet. Keep your fingers crossed for me! — submitted by Faye Mahaffey, OSU Extension Brown County Master Gardener Volunteer

Alive: continued from Page 1 “And here we are,” Geiger said. “I opened the retail setting and I am continuing to do what I’ve done my whole life. When you’re doing what you love, you feel young.” As part of Taxidermy by George, Geiger has the ability to preserve all fish, game, and even pets. “Pet cemeteries are a big business and some people want to get their pets mounted. It’s a very delicate subject. We speak about it and if all are in agreement, we do it. Think about it… for some, pets are like their kids,” Geiger said. Currently in Geiger’s shop is a Texas longhorn steer with horns measuring over six feet and a body weight of 1,900 pounds. “I also don’t put one customer in front of the other. I take them by number,” Geiger said. With a turnaround rate of four to six weeks on most mounts, Geiger’s shop is continually busy. “Most turnaround rates are a year and a half to two years,” he said. “The way I am able to do that four- to six-week turnaround is by using the most modern equipment and latest procedures in the industry today. I stay up on it.” Geiger also holds classes throughout the year to teach others how to do taxidermy. He said he tells his students, “Anybody can pull a dead animal skin over a form, now bring it back to life. Quality is the key. Make it look alive.” Geiger added, “You got to know the species and the anatomy of the animal.” Helping to create a real-life mount, Geiger includes habitat with the animal. “I don’t just put mounts on a board. If you catch a fish, there’s going to be a mud bank or if you get a bird, there will be tree limbs. Put something in it to make it look real,” he said. “There isn’t anything in my shop that I wouldn’t put in a state competition.” Geiger said he is a federallylicensed taxidermist through the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife to do migratory work
and he is a member of the National Taxidermists Association and the Ohio Taxidermists Association. He was also recognized via certificate by the Ohio House of Representatives. “State Representative Cliff Rosenberger and Speaker of the House Bill Batchelder both signed this thing and stamped it with the government seal thanking me for pursuing the pursuit. I almost flipped when I saw it. I was in awe that they took the time to look at this and say thank you. That meant a lot,” Geiger said. Born in Sardinia, Geiger said “I tell my friends ‘I’ve been around the world twice and I had the chance to retire 20 miles from where I was born.’ Here we are back at home.” Having attended Hillsboro High School and fished at Rocky Fork Lake as a child, Geiger enjoys being a Highland County resident with a business that sits near the lake on North Shore Drive. “The people of Highland County are friendly and welcoming. They care about you, they really do,” he said. Geiger gave an example of the friendliness he has experienced. “You try to pull out of the Hillsboro post office and people will stop and wave you out. They don’t do that in a big city. That’s why I came back here. There’s no place like home,” he said. Taxidermy by George is open Monday through Friday from noon to 7 p.m., Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. and is closed on Sundays. Geiger said the reason for the later hours is due to people hunting in the morning and taking a lunch break at noon or hunters who have already gotten game, but who are at work until 5 p.m. With a large bulletin board hanging in his work space, Geiger also likes to give other individuals and businesses a chance to display their flyers or business cards Anyone interested in taxidermy services or classes can reach Taxidermy by George at 937-393-3284. The shop is located at 11083 N. Shore Drive in Hillsboro across the street from Bayview Bait and Cottages.

ASTROLOGY MONDAY, APRIL 16, 2012 CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY: Jon Cryer, 47; Martin Lawrence, 47; Ellen Barkin, 58; Kareem AbdulJabbar, 65. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Take on a new project or responsibility that will help you meet new people or expand the possibility to work alongside someone you respect and feel you can learn from. This is a great time to look into personal or professional partnerships that can alter the way you earn your living in the future. Your numbers are 2, 10, 16, 28, 33, 47, 49. ARIES (March 21-April 19): Secrets will not help you solve personal problems. Be open regarding your feelings and ask questions if you think someone is keeping something from you. Anger isn't the answer, but good communication will restore your faith. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Open up to new experiences. Venture down avenues that offer something unique. Strive to meet people who have something to share with you. Put more emphasis on being a participant. What you do now will help you diversify at a later date. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Don't get caught in an emotional trap. You have to get a clear picture of how your personal decisions will influence your professional status or your reputation. Problems will spin out of control. Make sure you have a back-up plan. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Free your mind with new information. Experience events and activities that can expand your interests and give you something to strive for. Don't let too many choices lead to a stalemate. Pick and choose wisely. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Use your head and communicate with the people most likely to help you reach your goals. You will learn quickly if you are put in a situation that challenges you. Don't use long-time responsibilities as an excuse not to do something. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You'll be too emotionally confused to make a good decision. Back away from anyone putting pressure on you to do something you don't want to do. A personal relationship will undergo a dramatic change if you don't make the right choice. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Stick close to home and practice your beliefs. Your standing will suffer if you do anything that appears to be underhanded. A stellar reputation must be maintained, even if it means letting someone down who has asked way too much of you. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Improve your digs. The more you do to make your surroundings more conducive to your goals, the better. A chance to improve your position is apparent if you join forces with someone who has something to contribute to your game plan. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Poor information, anxiety and too much on your mind will lead to disaster in communications or while traveling. Find out firsthand what really happened and you will be able to dismantle someone's attempt to exploit you. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Don't allow anyone to take advantage of you. There will be ulterior motives behind the compliments you receive. Avoid
anyone looking for a cash handout or inside information that is not to be divulged. Don't mix business with pleasure. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Keep your thoughts a secret until you know where you stand. Someone will take advantage of you emotionally, leading to ill feelings and arguments. Reasonable, responsible action is your best recourse. Avoid being in a vulnerable position.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Don't get all worked up over nothing, especially in any situation that can affect your livelihood. A love relationship must not stifle your productivity. Problems with authority figures and institutions are apparent. BIRTHDAY BABY: You are sensitive, passionate and a problem solver. You strive for perfection.

LIVING IN STRESSFUL TIMES There is anecdotal evidence from dentists across the nation that they are seeing a notable higher incidence of broken and cracked teeth, which most attribute to nighttime tooth grinding (“bruxism”). It can argued that tough economic times have led many people to experience higher stress levels. The latest research on the subject shows that people who grind their teeth at night appear to be more likely to be suffering form stress. This is a problem because bruxism can lead to excessive tooth wear, looseness, and sensitivity. When dentists find evidence of these symptoms, they may recommend that patients wear custom-made mouth guards when they sleep. Such relaxation techniques as exercise and yoga are also recommended to reduce stress levels.
Our entire staff at CLARK FAMILY DENTISTRY encourages your questions about comprehensive dental care. We supply superior oral health care for the entire family. For answers to your oral health issue questions we invite you to call our office at 937.393.3494. Your health is our first priority. We are pleased to provide you with state-of-the-art dental care at 624 S. High Street, Hillsboro. Our goal is to make each visit to our office a comfortable and positive experience. New patients are always welcome. P.S. According to the study mentioned above, stress-induced nighttime tooth grinding occurs in people across all age, gender, and education levels. 2267592
