AUGUST TIPS
‘A pretty nice place to be’ By ANGELA SHEPHERD Staff Writer
The Highland House assisted living center on Harry Sauner Road in Hillsboro hosted an open house recently to "reintroduce" itself to the community. The reason for the reintroduction, said activities coordinator Linda Waits, is "there is a lot of new staff," including herself, at the facility, which prides itself in being equipped and outfitted to allow for a level of independence not typically found in other facilities. Admissions director Michael Bradford echoed Waits and added that the facility has been "revamping and updating" as well. Bradford offered tours of the refreshed facility to open house visitors. Also offered were drinks, cookies, and Angela Shepherd/The Times-Gazette whole apple pies baked by kitchen staff and boxed up Pictured above is Michael Bradford, admissions director at Highland House assisted living facility on Harry

MASTER GARDENER SHARES AUGUST’S GARDENING TASKS
Wife’s choice of wardrobe for son is too girly for dad DEAR ABBY: I'm becoming increasingly concerned about my wife, "Traci," and her influence over our 3-yearold son, "Grant." I love having a son, as does Traci, although she always wanted a little girl. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to have another child, and my wife's focus on our son appears to be somewhat skewed. Over the last few months, Traci has been buying Grant more and more feminine clothing. I'm OK with a pink shirt now and then, but lately it has gotten out of hand. She has been close to dressing Grant in drag. My wife says not to take it so seriously, but it bothers me when people tell us we have a "lovely little girl." I'm worried that what my wife is doing will have an adverse effect on my son, but at the same time I need to know if I'm overreacting. -IT'S A BOY! DEAR IT'S A BOY!: My experts tell me that there is no data that demonstrates what your wife is doing will cause gender confusion in your son. What's important is that you talk to her and express your concerns privately. Your little boy is at an age where he can sense stress in your marriage, and THAT could cause him problems later on. More important than what clothes he's wearing is decreasing the level of stress on the boy.
MAGIC LILIES OR NAKED LADIES Can it really be August? Most gardeners will agree that July seemed more like August this year because of the high temperatures. The rains have been spotty for us in this neck of the woods. The last big storm simply parted and went around us! The tomatoes are finally starting to ripen! Did you know that temperature plays a very important part in the ripening process? Lycopene, the pigment that gives ripe tomatoes their red color, is only produced at ambient temperatures of between 50 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. The optimum temperature for lycopene production is 6877 degrees Fahrenheit. Any great deviation from these temperature ranges will mean that tomatoes won’t turn red. Sometimes when it gets quite hot, tomatoes on the vine may have a yellowish orange look. If practical for the size of your operations, it might be better to pick them in the pink stage and let them ripen indoors in cooler temperatures. Tomatoes need warmth, not light, to ripen, so there’s no need to put them in direct sunlight. Place them out of direct sunlight where the temperature is 65-70 degrees Fahrenheit. As I walk around my garden with my Tomato “map”, yes…I have to make a map so that when my husband asks, “What tomato is this?”, I can give him a quick answer. Early in the ripening process I sometimes take a marker to the garden with me and put the number on the tomatoes as I harvest. I planted 25 different varieties of tomatoes this year, so I need all the help I can get when it comes to tomato iden-
tification! Your Gardening Checklist for August includes: • Water and weed • Fertilize annuals, especially those in containers. Remove spent annuals and replace with new plants to keep beds and containers fresh. • Divide irises and daylilies as they complete blooming. • Divide and transplant peonies. • Cut back yarrow, catmint, coreopsis and veronica by one-third when plants stop flowering to encourage new foliage and blooms. • Harvest herbs for freezing or drying. • Re-edge beds. • Keep compost moist. • Do a final planting of vegetables for fall harvest: spinach, lettuce, kale and chard. • Check plants for signs of pests and diseases. • Evaluate your garden with an eye for improvements. • Collect seeds for next year’s garden. • Study bulb catalogs and order garlic and flowering bulbs to plant this fall. • Add extra fall-blooming perennials to the garden • Cut flowers to bring indoors to enjoy. • Direct-seed turnips for a fall harvest Propagate strawberries or weed them and thin out runners. Remember that a gardener can help prevent problems with pests and disease. Handling plants carefully, not working among the plants when they
are wet, and routinely cleaning your tools can help a great deal. Encouraging populations of beneficial insects such as parasitic wasps and spiders is a great way to control Insect pests. Routinely inspect plants every other day or so during the height of the season to catch problems before they get out of hand! The accelerated gardening season continues to amaze me this year. Last year my Magic lilies were finished blooming by August 25, but this year they started blooming on July 25! The Resurrection Lily is a member of the Amaryllis Family, which includes other well-known bulbs such as common amaryllis, daylilies, daffodils, and snowdrops. These lilies are easy to grow and naturalize readily. Magic lilies have strap-like leaves that emerge in spring and die down by mid-summer. No leaves are present during summer months or when the blooms arise (hence the name Naked Lady or Magic Lily). These lilies make excellent cut flowers as well as beautiful garden plants. Don’t forget to e-mail your gardening questions to Mike Hannah at mhannah2@msn.com. Have you counted the jars on your canning shelf? Are you running short on some of your favorites? It’s time to make your list for this year! The Mahaffey’s list includes: Bread and Butter Pickles, Chili Sauce, Tomato juice and Pepper Relish. Submitted by Faye Mahaffey, OSUE Brown County Master Gardener Volunteer

DEAR ABBY: I'm dating a man who is genuine, considerate, thoughtful, humble, responsible, committed to his family, and we have great physical chemistry. Unfortunately, there is no intellectual/social "connection." We have never had an intel-
Nice place: continued from Page 1 for visitors to take home. He said the assisted-living facility has a capacity for 39 residents who are offered individual apartments from studio size to a one-bedroom. Each unit is equipped with its own thermostat, bathroom and a kitchenette with a microwave, sink, counter space, and a small refrigerator/freezer. Bradford said residents are free to decorate their apartment how they want. Evidence of this was obvious as outside many of the doorways, marked by numbered, golden placards, sat decorations--an old table with a lacy doily and pictures, whimsical lawn ornaments, and other little knick-knacks of home. Bradford added that residents are welcome to have their pets as well. The residence hallways are wide and equipped with safety bars and security lights. In a small hallway an "internet cafe" is available to residents. Off another hallway is an entrance to a courtyard with swings, chairs, and a grill. Bradford said Highland House is a "completely enclosed, secure facility." Residents are free to come and go but no one comes in or out the entrance doors without a security code, he said.
D EAR AB BY Abigail Van Buren lectually stimulating conversation, and I'm not sure he's even someone I would have picked to be friends with, although we do share interests in the outdoors and our faith. I feel emotionally secure with him and keep wondering if I'm being overly critical or choosing to stay in a relationship out of fear of not finding someone better in time to start a family. (I'm in my early 30s.) Please advise. -- INDECISIVE IN PLEASANTON, CALIF. DEAR INDECISIVE: To be frank, no one person has "everything." If intellectual stimulation is the quality that's most important to you, then the man you have been dating isn't the one for you. The fine qualities you listed would weigh heavily in his favor with many women. What you must ask yourself is whether or not you can be with him and find intellectual stimulation elsewhere when you feel you need it. ——— Dear Abby is written by Abigail Van Buren, also known as Jeanne Phillips, and was founded by her mother, Pauline Phillips. Write Dear Abby at www.DearAbby.com or P.O. Box 69440, Los Angeles, CA 90069.
According to Bradford, the facility also has its own beauty salon. Activities and outings are available for residents to enjoy. Also available to residents, and included in their room and board, is a laundry service, various activities, and wellness programs. As part of what is offered to residents there is a community gathering area--with plush furniture and a fireplace--where residents can listen to music, play games, and attend church services, Bradford said. A cafe-style dining room flanks the entrance lobby. Bradford said residents are encouraged to eat in the dining room for the interaction with each other and with staff but they are also able to receive their meals in their apartments. Bradford said Highland House offers a 24-hour nursing staff that check on residents every two hours. It is a private pay facility but VA aid and assistance are available as well, he said. Respite rooms are available for shorter stays. As to Highland House and all that it offers, resident John Broerman said, "It's a pretty nice place to be." Highland House is operated by Assisted Living Concepts and is located at 251 Harry Sauner Road in Hillsboro. For more information call (937) 393-8830 or go to http://www.alcco.com/.

Not only are brushing and flossing essential for good oral health, they may also be good for the heart. So say the researchers who found that failure to brush one's teeth twice a day increases one's risk of heart disease. Specifically, the study of nearly 12,000 adults showed that those with poor oral hygiene had a 70 percent higher risk of heart disease than those who brushed twice daily and were less likely to have unhealthy gums. While failure to brush one's teeth may not be in the same league as smoking when compared to a heart disease risk factor, the simple habit of tooth-brushing can make a difference in combating the number one cause of death in this country.

ASTROLOGY MONDAY, AUGUST 6, 2012 CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY: Vera Farmiga, 39; Geri Halliwell, 40; M. Night Shyamalan, 42; Michelle Yeoh, 50. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Take another look at some of your ideas and you will find a way to bring the past, present and future together to form a new plan that can help you advance mentally, spiritually or financially. Expand your interests and engage in attractive prospects. Don't walk away from the unique or unusual. Embrace new beginnings. Your numbers are 2, 6, 14, 20, 24, 36, 41. ARIES (March 21-April 19): Let the competition begin. You are ready for whatever comes your way and should engage in as much personal and professional interaction as possible. Challenge someone special and a stronger bond will develop. Love is in the stars. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Avoid being caught wasting time. You may not feel like engaging in certain responsibilities, but the sooner you put things behind you, the better off you'll be. Don't argue when all that's required is taking care of business. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Check out what everyone else is giving before you promise to contribute. Keeping things equal will also help you avoid becoming disgruntled. Plan to socialize or get out and meet people who share your interests. CANCER (June 21-July 22): You will encounter creative opportunities if you participate. An unusual encounter will bring back memories you've been avoiding. Face your past so you can put your baggage behind you and move forward. Don't be shy; say what you think. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Embrace change and try new things. Helping others or an organization you believe in will lead to fabulous connections that can help you make life-altering decisions. Honest communication will resolve issues that have held you back in the past. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You'll get far more accomplished if you work alone and at your own speed. An idea you have or a service you can provide has potential to become a prosperous venture. Don't let emotional problems rob you of a chance to excel. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): An opportunity to gather valuable information and support is apparent, but you must do the legwork. Don't let laziness be your downfall. Travel will lead to advancement and give you a different perspective on moving forward. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): You must be careful whom you trust, especially with secret information or financial dealings. Use your imagination, but don't overspend. Stick to what you know. This is not the time to explore new avenues; tying up loose ends is what's needed. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Push your way into the future with gusto. Good fortune can be yours if you utilize your skills to improve your lifestyle and financial future. Put more emphasis on money and forming partnerships. Consider services with a growing demand. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Stay away from anyone who wants to burden you with responsibilities. Protect what you have and move forward in a practical manner with no
regrets. Avoid involvement in an unorthodox lifestyle associated with emotional manipulation or guilt. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Look at your options. Strive to get out of repetitious situations that lead nowhere. A good budget along with your skills and knowledge will lead to a better future. An agreement with someone you love can help your situation.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Watch who you choose to be involved with. Personal problems will develop if you rely on someone to help out. A hobby will ease your stress and can lead to additional income. Use intuition when dealing with an emotional relationship. BIRTHDAY BABY: You are a go-getter. You are smart and entertaining, and you attract positive attention.

August, 2012 Hanging out at the pool or the beach on a hot day is a great way to beat the heat, but between having fun and hanging out with friends, most kids don't think much about water safety —and they should. For people between the ages of 5 and 24, drowning is the second cause of leading accidental death, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Most water-related accidents can be avoided by knowing how to stay safe and following a few simple guidelines. Take swimming lessons. If you swim a lot or

you’re around water a lot, it is vital to your overall safety to take swimming lessons. Lessons are offered at a variety of locations, like the YMCA, public pools, and at colleges or universities. Bef-

you're not a good swimmer or you're just learning to swim, don't go in water that's so deep you can't touch the bottom and don't try to keep up with skilled swimmers. That can be hard, especially when your friends are challenging you. If you are a good swimmer

Always swim with a partner, every time — whether you're swimming in a backyard pool or in a lake. Even experienced swimmers can become tired or get muscle cramps, which might make it difficult to get out of the water. When people swim together, they can help each other or go

swim only in places that are supervised by a lifeguard or an adult. In the event that something does go wrong, lifeguards are trained in rescue techniques and adults can help if something goes wrong. Be careful about diving and running at pool areas. Diving injuries can cause permanent spinal cord damage, paralysis, and sometimes even death. Protect yourself by only diving in areas that are known to be safe, such as the deep end of a supervised pool. If an area is posted with "No Diving" or "No Swimming" signs, pay attention to them and don’t dive in that area. Injuries also occur when kids run around slick pool
areas. Make sure you Walk and don’t run! Watch the sun. Sun reflecting off the water or off sand can intensify the burning rays. You might not feel sunburned when the water feels cool and refreshing, but the pain will catch up with you later — so remember to reapply sunscreen frequently and cover up much of the time. Drink plenty of fluids. Dehydration occurs when the amount of water leaving the body is greater than the amount being taken in. Our body needs water so it’s not a good thing to be dehydrated. Swimming can be loads of fun for you and your friends, but remember safety comes first.

n 1964, Gene Rodenberry had an idea for a tv show, a western adventure set in outer space. At least, that’s the way he pitched it to the networks: “a Wagon Train to the stars.” But tv executives were not jumping up and down for joy. Maybe it was Gene’s idea of having a crew made up of all races. Or Gene’s love for presenting social and political ideas. And they flat out hated the first pilot, in which Jeffrey Hunt starred as Christopher Pike, captain of the Starship Enterprise. But there was something about the show they liked. They asked for a second pilot show to be produced. This one featured William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk and Leonard Nimoy as his Vulcan First Officer, Spock. Now things began to click, and the show went on the air in 1966. At first the show had high ratings, but by the end of the first season, not as many people were watching. NBC considered dropping Star Trek from its line-up. Fan letters saved the show for a while, but the series was cancelled after three seasons.
Gene Roddenberry
NBC probably thought that was the end of cowboys in space, but if they did, they were wrong, wrong, wrong! Perhaps the excitement of men landing on the moon in 1969 helped people get more excited about life beyond the earth. Like many shows, Star Trek actually became more popular as re-runs than it was during its original broadcast. The show developed a strong cult following. Filmation and Paramount Studios produced Star Trek: the Animated Series, which aired on Saturday mornings for kids. Then Paramount began to make Star Trek movies. One of the best was Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn, starring Ricardo Mantalban as the evil Kahn, a character from the original tv series. Then came the spin-offs! First there was Star Trek, the Next Generation, starring Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Piccard. Next came Deep Space Nine, starring Avery Brooks as Commander Benjamin Sisko. Then Voyager, with Kate Mulgrew as Captain Janeway, and finally, Enterprise, with Scott Bacula as Captain Jonathan Archer. For a show that was nearly cancelled after one season, Star Trek has done rather well. A cartoon, four spin-off series on tv, 11 movies--and still counting! Gene Rodenberry, who died in 1991, was a visionary. It was a tribute to that vision when the first Space Shuttle orbiter was named Enterprise. Let’s celebrate Gene’s birthday on August 19th by watching a favorte Star Trek episode or movie.

What flavor says summer? Watermelon! Don’t you love the juicy, sweet, wash- your-face while you eat it, yummy treat? Why not combine the best flavor of summer with an all time favorite treat – cupcakes? Making watermelon cupcakes is easy if you follow the simple directions below. Ingredients:
• 1 boxed cake mix (Pink cakes like strawberry or cherry look like watermelon). • 1 can of ready made frosting – pink is best or you can color white with red food coloring • Chocolate chip “watermelon seeds” • 1 package of watermelon flavored Jello? (optional) Directions a) Follow directions on cake mix and bake. b) If you want your cupcake to taste like watermelon, add the Jello powder to the mix. Do not add water and make real Jello. c) Let cupcakes cool and frost with frosting. d) Sprinkle chocolate chips for watermelon seeds. Fun tip! If you can find green cupcake wrappers, your cupcakes will look more realistic!
