fter months of preparation and planning, the Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure has arrived on the doorstep of the Highland County community as Hillsboro serves as the start and end town for the annual tour. Riders from across the country were to begin arriving Saturday morning and were to spend their day eating local food, shopping for unique finds, touring the area, enjoying a jam-packed day of entertainment and, according to organizers, hopefully experiencing the best GOBA start and finish town in the tour's 24-year history. “Hopefully, they'll have as good of an experience as we'll have having them here,” said Terry Mull, the executive director of the Highland County Family YMCA and the local coordinator for GOBA. Here’s Another $50 Gift Card Winner!

Summer Howard is the latest winner of the "find the shopping bag" contest. She won a $50 gift card from Janie’s Closet. Look for the hidden DIAPER in this week’s Shopper. Last week’s diaper was found on page 7. Don’t forget to donate diapers to the Dry Bottoms-R-Us Diaper Drive from now until Father’s Day!
This welcome sign, sponsored by Merchants National Bank, greets GOBA riders as they visit Hillsboro.

SOCIAL
PERENNIAL ASPARAGUS PRODUCES MORE EACH SEASON It’s very satisfying to produce food for your table year after year, with minimal attention. Asparagus is a perennial will grow larger and more productive each year and produce for many years with almost no maintenance, if you plant it properly. You can harvest handfuls of crisp, sweet stalks all during spring from an established patch. All you have to do is invest some time and effort to get your plants started, and patiently wait a few years for them to get established before you start to harvest. A common mistake with asparagus is to underestimate how many plants you actually need. Remember that while each plant may produce a pound or more of fresh spear each season, there are only one or two spears per plant on any given day. If you want to cut a family-sized harvest into your cooking pot, you’ll need six to ten productive plants per family member in your asparagus patch. You can plant asparagus any time the soil temperature exceeds 50 degrees. Start with two-year-old containergrown plants if your budget permits; if not you can get one-year roots. Planting holes should be one foot deep and wide, spaced two feet apart. If you are planting in trenches, rows should be spaced five feet apart. Giving the plants lots of room helps prevent fungus diseases by letting air circulate to keep them dry. Good drainage is important; waterlogged soils will lead to root rot. Sprinkle some 0-21-0 (triple super-phosphate) fertilizer in the bottom of the
ASPARAGUS planting holes or trench before planting. Fill half full with compost or aged manure, sprinkle on some 10-10-10 fertilizer or Espoma Plant-Tone, and plant the roots so that the base of the plant (root crown) is about four inches below ground level. Only fill to the tips of the plants; if your plants don’t have stalks yet, wait for them to grow before backfilling around them. The best weed control is mulching. You can use straw, composted leaves, or grass clippings for this purpose. If you have a problem with perennial weeds, after harvest is over you can cut all the plants to the ground and then spray the row with Roundup to kill the weeds, and then let the asparagus regrow. You’ll need to wait a year before you harvest. Let the plants grow all season, fertilizing occasionally and mulching to prevent weeds. After frost kills the tops cut
them off. Repeat this the second year. Start harvesting next year, but only cut while spears are at least as thick as your finger. After harvest is over let the remaining stalks grow tall. Asparagus beetles chew on the fern, causing the stem to turn brown and reducing the yield the next year. If Asparagus beetles are seen, spray the ferns with an approved insecticide. For disease prevention, spray with an approved fungicide on a 7 to 14 day schedule beginning when the ferns reach a 3 to 4 foot height and continuing until mid September. Here are our recommended varieties for the Ohio valley: Jersey Knight produces a bumper crop of large, fat spears, typically 5/8-inch in diameter, bright green with deep purple tips. One of the easiest varieties to grow, they have terrific vigor that makes these plants come back
stronger every year. The yield from Jersey Knight is 2 to 4 times greater than older strains such as the Washington series, highly rust-resistant and tolerant of Fusarium, Crown and Rust Rot. Purple Passion spears are larger and more tender than green asparagus, without any of the strings that can make green asparagus tough. The whole spear can be cooked without wasting the butt. It has so much more natural sugar it’s often snapped off and eaten raw (its color makes it a distinctive salad garnish) but when it’s cooked its sweetness gives it a mild, nutty flavor. ——— Steve Boehme is the owner of GoodSeed Farm Nursery & Landscape, located on Old State Route 32 three miles west of Peebles. Daughter’s salute to dad is shared by all on Father’s Day DEAR ABBY: It's Father's Day and I'd like to salute one particular unsung hero -- my dad. He was there for me and my sister despite a difficult workload throughout our childhood. He has always been generous with love and affection, and I have no doubt that he has sacrificed things he wanted personally for our benefit. Dad has been the calming voice during times of strife. He can fix anything from a broken washing machine to a broken heart. He has not only nurtured us, but our children as well. He has been our role model when it comes to setting an example of what a man, husband, father and grandfather should be. He is never judgmental and has always shown us the best in ourselves. He's consistent in his love of God, country and family. He is patient, kind, generous and smart in ways I only wish I could be. To top it off, he found us the best mother we could have hoped for. They have been married 58 years. My unsung hero doesn't wear a cape, but I do believe he has certainly earned a halo. -- SHARON IN BRANDON, FLA.

Further, many libraries lack sufficient staff to offer one-on-one support to operate a computer. To someone who is proficient, it may seem strange that a person can't simply lay a hand on a mouse and go. The reality is, computers and the Internet are not intuitive to those who haven't been exposed to them -- and there are many. While I don't know of a librarian who wouldn't like to offer unlimited assistance to computer users, libraries nationwide are losing staff due to budget cuts. At the same time, use of libraries is steadily increasing. It's frustrating to disappoint patrons who expect to receive instruction in computer operation. We prefer they leave our building happy. So, Abby, please spread the word. Computers and Internet services vary from DEAR SHARON: What a library to library. Readers should ask their librarian sweet letter. GOBA: continued from Page 1 The activities, however, are not limited to the riders' enjoyment. Members of the community are invited to join in as well and to greet the riders. Local non-profit organizations will be selling food to riders at the Highland County Fairgrounds beginning at 12 p.m. Saturday, on the lawn of the Highland County courthouse before and during the opening ceremonies as well as at different venues on the shuttle bus route, and area restaurants are providing special or discounted meals to the riders. "There will be plenty of food and drinks available from local non-profits and food vendors," said Bob Lambert, the executive director of the Highland County Convention and Visitors Bureau. At 5 p.m Saturday, live entertainment begins on the lawn of the historic Highland County courthouse with the group “See You in the Funnies” and Eva Jade Landon will be a featured guest performer. The bicycle parade lineup at the fairgrounds and costume contest begins at 6 p.m. Saturday with the Hillsboro Uptown Business Association serving as judges of the contest and marshals for the parade. The parade will begin at 6:30 p.m., winding riders through historic uptown Hillsboro. The opening ceremony starts at 7 p.m. and will be immediately followed by the Summer of Love ceremony, in which Hillsboro Mayor Drew Hastings will perform civil
wedding ceremonies and a group renewal of vows ceremony on the lawn of the Highland County Courthouse. A wedding reception is scheduled to follow with organizers building what could be the world's longest wedding cake with the cake and frosting being donated by Kroger. Bob Lambert, the executive director of the Highland County Convention and Visitors Bureau, said the cake will begin at the corners of High and Main streets in front of the courthouse and will end at the corners of N. High Street and Gov. Trimble Place. Maggie Horst, the wedding coordinator, is encouraging the community to participate in the renewal of vows ceremony or take part in the wedding reception that will follow. People can sign up the day of the event for free and have the option to purchase a tuxedo T-shirt and a tiara for $20 to commemorate the occasion. Summer of Love T-shirts are being sold by HUBA to residents and to riders and are available for purchase at various uptown locations. “Be ready to put your best foot forward because company's coming,” said Lambert. “We want to make sure we're looking good and that they feel welcome. Be prepared to answer questions and talk about life in Highland County. They're here to learn and explore about us.” Mull said, “We're ready and willing to welcome riders in.” The Times-Gazette will have a comprehensive GOBA guide for riders and for community members in a special edition on Saturday, June 16.

Visit & Vacation in Highland County! GOBA has arrived in Hillsboro for the Summer of Love tour The Times-Gazette What do you get when you combine thousands of bicyclists, impromptu marriage ceremonies, tuxedo T-shirts and bridal veils, and the world's longest wedding cake? It's called the Summer of Love, and it's happening this weekend in Hillsboro. Highland County YMCA Director Terry Mull is coordinating the Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure's visit to Highland County, and he
says it promises to be a blissful event. Around 3,000 cyclists were expected to arrive in Hillsboro at the start of this weekend to kick off the week-long ride, and local organizers say love is in the air. Mayor Drew Hastings has offered to perform a wedding ceremony during the event for any couple who wants to be married or renew their wedding vows. And Highland County may be vying for a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records for the

and Hastings suggested marrying people en masse, in the spirit of the 1960s. "I brought it up kind of half-kidding, but I would be more than happy to marry people in the Summer of Love," Hastings said. "I think we constantly have to have fun events like this that people can get behind." "It's going to be cool. ... The Junior Fair Building at the fairgrounds is serving as the food market, and adjacent tent is providing an eating area. Hastings said that he thinks the event is a great idea. "I've always felt that in Hillsboro, our motto should be, 'There's always something going on in Hillsboro.' You've got to get people involved and excited," he said.

Mull is in his 25th year of participating in a similar annual ride in Iowa, and the idea of a world record came from an experience during last year's race. "I've been in touch with the Guinness Book people, and I don't believe there is an entry for the world's longest wedding cake." Highland County Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Bob Lambert came up with the idea of a Summer of Love theme,

ASTROLOGY MONDAY, JUNE 18, 2012 CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY: Blake Shelton, 36; Carol Kane, 60; Roger Ebert, 70; Paul McCartney, 70. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Keeping a steady pace will help you stabilize your position. Don't divulge secret or personal information. Too much of anything will send the wrong signal. Arguments will not help you gain ground. A stalemate is likely to limit your progress. The sooner you become a team player, the easier it will be to reach your goals. Your numbers are 9, 14, 18, 27, 33, 42, 48. ARIES (March 21-April 19): Raise the bar, take the initiative and follow through. Past acquaintances can influence your future earning potential. Pursue a creative venture that allows you to use your skills to the fullest. Love is apparent if you make the first move. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Kindness, compassion and patience are good, but don't let anyone take advantage of you. Someone will withhold information in order to get your sympathy or support. Ask questions, assess your situation and strive to eliminate stress. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Taking a walk down memory lane will lead to reconnecting with someone from your past. Romance is highlighted, but before you make any promises, consider how the choices you make now will affect your future goals. Hard work will pay off. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Don't get involved in gossip or you'll end up being talked about behind your back. Expect to receive false information when dealing with government agencies or institutions. Follow the rules, and above all, don't let anger get the better of you. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Do what you can to help others. Volunteer your services or make a contribution. The more active you are, the easier it will be to win favors and support. Financial suggestions should be considered. Invest in you and what you have to offer. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Refrain from making a move or saying something you will live to regret. Emotions will be unstable and problems will appear to be much worse than they actually are. Concentrate on self-control and take measures to be and look your best. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Expand your interests, meet new people and travel to new places. Re-evaluate your goals and assess whether you should continue down the same path or make alterations that will help you offer a greater variety of services. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Go over your personal papers and make changes that will help your assets grow. Don't trust anyone to take care of your interests. A hands-on approach to whatever you pursue will protect you from someone taking advantage of you. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Concentrate on the changes you can make to improve your life, but go about any physical challenge cautiously. Romance is in the stars, but so is jealousy. Keep a clear head and avoid impulsive emotional actions. Make love, not war. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Don't gamble with your hard-earned cash. Look out for your physical, emotional and
financial wellness. A change of plans may disrupt your day. Don't take on responsibilities that do not belong to you. Excess is the enemy. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Use your innovative, inventive mind. People will gravitate to your side and inspire you to follow your dreams. Love is highlighted, and sharing what you have with someone special will ease your stress, lower
your overhead and bring you benefits. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Be careful how you handle others. Too much of anything will make you appear careless and irresponsible. Avoid too much talk and unnecessary travel. Focus on a creative hobby that brings you pleasure. BIRTHDAY BABY: You are versatile and unpredictable. You are chatty, witty and bright.

STEWART’S PHARMACY
Recent research has uncovered links between gum disease and other parts of the body that previously may have seemed unlikely. For instance, periodontitis has been associated with an increased risk of heart disease and stroke, which makes a good case for addressing gum inflammation. More recently, researchers have discovered another potential benefit of keeping gum disease at bay. According to research, it has been found that treating periodontal disease in diabetics may lower their insulin levels. Researchers suggest that the connection is based on bacterial infections of the mouth that cause inflammation, which results in chemical changes that reduce the effectiveness of insulin produced in the body. As a consequence, diabetics find it more difficult to control their blood sugar.
