K

eeping with their mission of providing relief to those in need, Hope Christian Alliance is holding a diaper drive that begins today. The goal is to gather 1,000 diapers between now and June 17 to help the Southern Ohio Pregnancy Center in Hillsboro supply diapers to area families who have small children and struggle to afford this necessity. Many who come for diapers will already be pregnancy center clients, but those coming for diapers won't have to become clients to receive diapers," said Cathy Griffith, SOPC director. "They will receive information about the center, but won't have to Gary Abernathy/The Times-Gazette become clients unless they choose to take advantage of Karen Faust, left, and Sue Hilger discuss the ‘Dry Bottoms-R-Us Project’ as Rotary president Terry Collins looks other services offered." on at Tuesday’s meeting. The project runs from today until June 17 to help the Southern Ohio Pregnancy Center See DIAPERS I Page 5 in Hillsboro.

DELICIOUS SWEET POTATOES

In-laws’ invitation snubs still rankle after 27 years

By STEVE BOEHME

DEAR ABBY: I have been married to my husband, "Stu," for 27 years. His brother's family continues to send invitations addressed only to Stu. When they call to invite us to anything and I answer, they ask to speak to him. He has asked them not to do that. When RSVPing to the latest invitation to our niece's graduation party -- addressed only to my husband -- I said that he would attend as he was the only one invited. I also asked if I had done something to offend anyone. I was told, "No, of course not," and they were "sorry if there was a misunderstanding," because the invite was for the whole family. When we see each other, they are polite. I feel that pushing the point or not attending would reflect badly on me. What do you suggest? I am hurt by years of this treatment, and Stu is just as offended. -- HAD ENOUGH IN NEW HAMPSHIRE

Is there anything more delicious than a plate of baked sweet potatoes with fresh cracked pepper, salt and melted butter? Yes. The same dish made with fresh-dug sweet potatoes from your own garden! This is a down-home treat that’s easy to grow successfully, and we see more gardeners trying it each year. The key to success in Ohio is an early start, since sweet potatoes need a long season of sunny days to mature. Sweet potatoes are in the same plant family as morning glories. They need warm soil, so now is the time to prepare your garden for these delicious tubers. You’ll need to make a raised ridge in a place with full sun all day, working the soil and perhaps covering it with some black plastic for a week or two to warm the soil. Sweet potato plants are sold as bunches of rooted cuttings; stems with a few leaves and well-developed roots. You can keep them in a jar of water until you’re ready to plant. After planting, water them regularly to keep the soil moist while they develop. Control the weeds in your row until the plants spread out enough to shade the ground. Be very careful not to over-fertilize sweet potatoes, or you’ll get beautiful lush plants with tiny potatoes. Using manure can cause fungus diseases. The best way is to use a low-nitrogen fertilizer like Espoma Garden Tone (4-6-6) or other bone meal-based organic fertilizers. Sprinkle 4-5 pounds per 100-foot row on the ground before you till the row. Which sweet potatoes should you grow? Here’s a rundown of the most popular varieties: Georgia Jets are the sweetest of sweet potatoes. They grow extremely fast, producing No. 1 size potatoes in only 90 days, and extra-high yields. Jets have deep orange inside color with moist flesh and a marvelous flavor. The outside skin is so red it is almost purple. Vardaman is the next sweetest type we sell at GoodSeed Farm. A bush variety with the deepest, brightest inside color of all sweet potatoes, Vardaman has golden yellow outside skin that darkens after digging. Beauregard has been accepted by farmers everywhere. Chances are this is the sweet potato that is available at your local market. The outside color is redorange and the inside color is orange. The Beauregard is a quick maturing

Centennial has carrot color inside with copper to orange outside skin, and produces "Baby Bakers" in about 90 days. Perhaps the most widely recognized sweet potato, the Centennial has been used in many bake-off contests. O’Henry is a white-skinned, creamfleshed sweet potato that cooks up drier than other sweet potato varieties. Its stringless flesh has a mild nutty flavor. The compact cluster of tubers just below the plant makes it easy to harvest. Porto Rico "Bunch" is a favorite of gardeners with limited space Also called "Bush" and "Vineless," the Porto Rico sweet potato has a copper-colored outside skin and light red flesh. With delicious "old-fashioned" flavor, it is an excellent baking potato producing "Baby Bakers" in 100 days. White Yams are one of America's oldest varieties. Known also as Triumph, Southern Queen, Poplar Root, "Choker" and White Bunch, are white as cotton inside and out, and sweet as sugar. White yams are the driest sweet potato. Set sweet potato plants 12 to 18 inches apart, preferably on a wide, raised ridge about 8 inches high. A ridge not only dries better in the spring but also warms earlier. Covering the ridge with black plastic can speed early season growth by capturing and storing

more of the sun’s heat in the soil under the plastic cover. The vines of spreading varieties need a great deal of space, so allow at least 3 to 4 feet between rows. After early cultivation (which is not necessary with black plastic), sweet potatoes need minimal care to keep down weeds. Once the vines spread to cover the ground, little weeding is required. Irrigate if an extended drought occurs. Do not water during the last three to four weeks before harvest to protect the developing roots. Sweet potatoes will be ruined by frost, so make sure you harvest them as soon as they are ready. If an early frost takes you by surprise, harvest them immediately before the decay from the dead vines travels into the potatoes and rots them. You should be able to find sweet potato plants at local independent garden centers. GoodSeed Farm gets fresh shipments of sweet potato plants weekly during May. See this column on our website for Marjorie’s sweet potato pie recipe. D EAR AB BY Abigail Van Buren takes advantage of every opportunity to see Corey. We live in California and Corey is a junior in high school. Prom is almost here, and Greg has told her he doesn't want her to miss out on anything. I feel she should not go with anyone else -- that it's a sacrifice you make when you have a boyfriend. Well, she accepted an invitation from a guy "friend" and Greg said he was fine with it. I sent Greg a text message, and he repeated that sentiment. I believe Greg was thinking she wouldn't actually go to the prom and he was just trying to be nice, hoping she'd make the better decision. I am stressed that this may ruin her relationship and she'll be devastated. What's the etiquette? Is it OK for her to go to the prom with a friend, even if she has a boyfriend? -- ONLY WANTS THE BEST FOR HER

DEAR HAD ENOUGH: Either your brother-in-law and his family never learned how to properly address an invitation (i.e., "Mr. and Mrs." or "and family"), or on some emotional level you were never accepted as a fullfledged family member. As I see it, you have two choices: Continue to attend these events DEAR ONLY: If your as you have for the past 27 daughter cleared it with her years, or both of you decline boyfriend and he said he's fine and tell them exactly why. with it, then it's all right for her to go to the prom. Diapers: continued from Page 1 The Dry Bottoms-R-Us project evolved following a meeting between the SOPC and Hope Christian Alliance Director Curtis Pegram last year. "When Curtis visited the center the first time, he asked what Hope Christian Alliance could do for the center. We talked about several different things, but as conversations continued over the next year, it always came back to diapers," Griffith said. "Rarely is there a day that goes by, including Saturday and Sunday, that we don't get calls for diapers," she said. "Sometimes we get five or six calls a day from parents who need diapers for their infants." Thus, a diaper committee was formed and began planning what would be the best way to collect, store and distribute diapers, as well as what would be the best way to get the word out about the diaper drive. "Each committee member had a job to do," Griffith said. "This included contacting different clubs, associations, groups to speak to creating a flyer; getting the flyer printed; asking businesses, libraries, stores, schools to be diaper drop-off points; asking businesses and others to be diaper donors. And my job was to write the speech committee members would use when they spoke to different groups in the county." Committee members then spoke at different venues throughout Highland County trying to reach as many people with the message as possible, Griffith said. "Flyers are being distributed to as many groups and churches as possible," she said. "Diapers will be collected at (several) drop-off points and will be distributed twice each month from the SOPC." The SOPC staff has dedicated a special room in their newly redecorated basement for distribution. "Those needing diapers will drive down the alley between the center and the Hillsboro Church of Christ, at 135 and 155 W. Walnut Street and pick up the diapers from our room in the basement," Griffith said. Pegram said when the SOPC presented at Rotary he was "so moved by Cathy

Griffith's presentation that I added it to the list of goals for the alliance." He said that depending upon the volume of donations, diapers will be stored mainly at the post office in Hillsboro and delivered to the SOPC when needed. "Awareness, love, and 1,000 cases of diapers," are what Pegram said the HCA is hoping to accomplish through Dry Bottoms-R-Us. Griffith said that in 2007, the SOPC had 294 clients, but in 2011 the need increased and the center was up to 844 clients. “Many of those coming to the center now would not have dreamed in 2007 that they would (eventually) need our services," she said. "But life has changed in Highland County in the past few years. The economic situation for some families has become dire. People have lost their jobs, their homes and they are desperate. "The center has been able to stand in the gap for the needs in those families when the families have had babies and young children. Everything we have is given to us. I tell everyone that it is 'by the grace of God we receive it and by the grace of God we give it away.'" Diaper drop-off points are the SOPC, Hillsboro Post Office, Merchants National Bank, all county libraries, White Oak High School, Southern State Community College, The Times-Gazette, and Southern Hills Community Bank. Monetary donations are also accepted. Checks can be made out to Dry Bottoms-RUs/SOPC and mailed to SOPC. 135 W. Walnut Street, Hillsboro, Ohio 45133. For more information, call Griffith at 937-393-2990 or Pegram at 937-393-9231. In recognition of the Dry Bottoms-R-Us Project, the Highland County Shopper's hidden grocery bag will be changed to a diaper through Father's Day, June 17. "We live in a county that is going through desperate times and we live in a county that is filled with people who give. The center is funded by those gifts," Griffith said. "God knows our needs before we ask and He continues to supply our needs so that we can touch the lives of those babies and their families who come through our doors. We are thankful."

Medical Update by Dr. Clark And Associates FULL MOUTH RECONSTRUCTION In some cases, patients’ teeth may be so decayed, injured/fractured, or worn/eroded that they may require extensive treatment known as “full mouth rehabilitation,” this rebuilding/restoring process typically involves every tooth in both the upper and lower jaws. The process begins with a thorough examination and evaluation of the patient’s teeth, gums, and occlusion (bite). It continues with an assessment of the color shape, size, and proportion of the teeth with respect to how they relate to the gums, lips, mouth, side profile, and face. Then, after taking x-rays, impressions, and photographs, the dentist (in conjunction with specialists, if necessary) can recommend procedures and techniques for totally restoring the teeth.

EUGENIA LAST the Last Word in

ASTROLOGY MONDAY, MAY 7, 2012 CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY: Breckin Meyer, 38; Traci Lords, 44;Amy Heckerling, 58; Bill Kreutzmann, 66. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Consider your alternatives before you let anger prevail over smart problem solving. Things will fall into place if you are realistic and practical regarding what needs to be done and how you accomplish your goals. Don't leave anything to chance. This is not the year to live in a dream world. Your numbers are 5, 9, 16, 21, 24, 32, 45. ARIES (March 21-April 19): Emotional deception will lead to an overdue decision. Don't fear making an impulsive move if it will help you put distance between you and someone or something that has been causing a financial or legal problem. Love is highlighted. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): A carefree moment can lead to something out of the ordinary. Enjoy the moment, but don't overdo it. Balance will be necessary if you want to get the most out of an experience for the least amount of money, effort or debt. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Let your emotions lead the way. Don't become angry, but do express your likes and dislikes in order to get the results needed to move forward. A partnership can be your ticket to a better life or interesting new venture. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Focus on the task at hand. You won't win points talking about what you are supposed to do. Show a little enthusiasm and make an honest effort to outdo any competition you face. Embrace a challenge and make a good impression. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Make a last-minute change. A new perspective will lift your spirits and motivate you to engage in a pursuit that can alter your life. Don't sit back; let your experience and knowledge lead you to the winner's circle. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You will pick up valuable information from a seasoned colleague. You can push for what you want, but don't pressure someone or make demands that can lead to a lack of support or a falling-out with someone you need in your life. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Take control and make things happen. Partnerships will thrive if you communicate and formulate what you want to see transpire. Short trips will inspire you to make a promise that will dictate how you proceed. Love is in the stars. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): You may not see eye-to-eye with someone you are in a relationship with. You can move forward if you are willing to compromise, making your everyday routine far more conducive to reaching your set goals. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Don't get angry. Be realistic and look at the statistics. Once you are fully aware of the consequences involved, you can make a move that will position you positively. Change is necessary and must not be put off. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Focus on what you can do to secure your home, family and financial situation. Investment purchases or sales will be your

ticket to a better future. Don't let an emotional matter come between you and your destination. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Good fortune will be yours if you put your effort into a plan that encourages securing a better future by utilizing your skills in a more diverse manner. Socializing will lead to a connection with someone who will help stabilize your life.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Emotional blackmail is prevalent. Whether you are applying or receiving pressure, it is important not to continue down such a destructive path. A remembered experience will help you get back on track and avoid making the same mistake. BIRTHDAY BABY: You are persistent and never back down. You seek justice and fair play.

ave you got a great story to tell with pictures and words? Follow these steps to turn your first comic from idea to comic book. 1. Choose a concept. Comics can be anything you want. Just about any story - long or short, happy or sad - can be told in comic form. 2. Write your story and make thumbnails for it. Thumbnails are small, sketchy drawings on individual panels of each page. Use the thumbnails to develop your plot - decide how much of the story you will tell on each page and in each panel. Think about how to compose each panel and how to make your point to the reader.

3. Practice drawing the characters, locations, and objects that will be in your story. Artists call these "model sheets." The more you practice, the better your drawings will be and the betyour ter drawings, the easier for your reader to understand what you’re trying convey to with your artwork. Make sure you

know how each character looks from all angles – this will help your readers to identify them. 4. Look at the flow of

You may think you should start drawing first, but you need to make sure there's room for your text boxes and word or thought balloons. Planning the placement of your copy now will save you many headaches later. 7. Sketch in the drawings. Make sure that everything in each panel is clear and works the way you want it to. Ask your-

You’ve probably painted with your fingers and a paintbrush, but have you ever painted with a marble? How about a rubber ball or an acorn? If it rolls, you can paint with it! The best part is that you don’t know what kind of picture you’ll paint. The marbles will roll out your artwork!

You will Need: • Marbles, small rubber balls or

anything that rolls • Pie pan or other metal pan • Tempera paints • White Paper • Newspaper to catch drips

Instructions: • Place lots of newspaper on painting surface or do this

outside. • Pour paint in pie plate. Use a new pie plate for each color. • Drop in marble or other object; coat well with paint. • Roll the marble out on the white paper – holding both

sides of the paper gently roll the marble around so that it “paints.” • Use other colors and repeat the process. • Frame your picture!
