HAPPY CAMPERS SINCE 1990 By MEREDITH CREEK Contributing Writer
G
ary Binegar is true to his home community. Despite suggestions to move his truck, auto and camper business from Greenfield into cities with higher traffic volume, the McClain graduate said, “this is where I will be.” Binegar doesn’t believe he will ever leave the Greenfield community, the place he was born, raised, and has operated his business for more than two decades. “I always figured Greenfield would be where I would stay,” Binegar said. Binegar’s Truck, Auto & Camper Sales began in 1990 with the sale of used trucks and cars. The business was set on a small lot in an alley off of Jefferson Street before being moved to Seventh Street where it remained for roughly six years. “(The business) outgrew that location and moved to Washington Street in 1998,”

teacup. A pocketwatch. A five dollar bill. A deck of cards. . . . Nearly 5,000 objects have been recovered from the wreckage of the great British steamship, the RMS Titanic. A crowd gathered to watch the Titanic depart from Southampton, England, just after noon on April 10, 1912. There had never been a ship like this—nearly as long as three football fields and as tall as an 11-story building. It was bound for New York City. Titanic had an elegant dining room where food prepared by French chefs was served on fine china. The ship was decorated with stained-glass windows, carved paneling, and fancy chandeliers. It had a beauty salon, a barber shop, a library, a Turkish bath, a squash
Shortly before midnight, Fleet picked up his phone and called the First Officer, William Murdoch: “Iceberg ahead!”

14th. It was a calm, starry night, as Titanic plowed through the icy waters of the north Atlantic. Frederick Fleet kept watch in the crow’s nest. With all the incredible luxuries of Titanic, someone had misplaced the one thing they really needed that night—binoculars for the look-out.
Immediately, Murdock ordered the ship to turn sharply and put the engines in reverse. Too late. The next sound Murdock heard was a soft thud of the ship hitting the iceberg. Such a soft sound—barely audible. Surely whatever caused it
the California, 10 miles away, had shut down their radio for the night. Another ship, the Carpathia, heard the distress call and came to the rescue—but they were 58 miles away. By the time they arrived, the ship had already disappeared into the ocean. The Carpathia could only rescue the survivors from their lifeboats. It took only three hours for the ship to sink. One survivor described how at the end, the lights went out, and then “slowly and almost majestically” the ship rose straight up in the water. And then “She slid beneath the water of the cold Atlantic.”
More than 1500 people perished that night. After this disaster, new laws were passed. All ships were required to have enough life boats for everyone on board, and to have radio service around the clock. April 15, 2012, marks the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. The wreckage — discovered in 1985—is slowly dissolving into the ocean where it came to rest. Soon, nothing will remain but a teacup, a pocketwatch and the other objects that were recovered. But the legend — and hopefully, the lessons learned — will last for a very long time.
impact, the captain knew the worst. He commanded the lifeboats to be filled with “women and children first.” But there weren’t enough lifeboats, and in all the uproar, some boats were launched half full. By the time the crew decided to call for help,
Write Like an Egyptian by Donna Patton
Here’s a fun activity for April. Take one of the writing prompts below and add a couple of sentences to create a mini-story. Some writers are able to create a story in as little as 50 words! They call it flash-fiction -- maybe because it’s written in a flash or very fast. When you’ve finished writing, email the story to us at write2cookies@gmail.com. If we like your story, we might print it in a future page.

The Egyptians didn’t write with the same letters that we use. They used a form of writing called Hieroglyphics. The word Hieroglyphs is made from two Greek words—hieros meaning “holy” and glyphe meaning “writing.” So hieroglyph means “holy writing.” Hieroglyphics are pictures that represent objects, sounds, actions, or ideas. The Egyptians had a Hieroglyphic alphabet they used to write with. Reading Hieroglyphics can be difficult. You need to look closely at the hieroglyphs to find out exactly how to read the writing. It depends on which way the people or animals are facing. For example, if an animal hieroglyph faces right, you read from right to left. If it faces left, you read from left to right (the same way that we do). Sometimes Hieroglyphs are read from top to bottom.
2) The waves washed over the girl’s purple flip-flops . . .
3) Once in a galaxy far, far away . . .
4) Jenny and Hanna were best friends until the day that . . .
Look at the Hieroglyphic alphabet above and try to write your name. Once you have finished, try to solve the secret message below, using the Hieroglyphic alphabet.
5) This year Ben Clark would win . . . or else!

Heath helps with RV repairs and with going to auctions to purchase autos and RVs. Matt works weekends at times in the sales department.” Binegar said two additional employees do detailing and prep work on the RVs and other autos. In addition to the truck, auto and camper business, Binegar carries on his family’s tradition and works as a full-time auctioneer and real estate agent. “My family has been in the auction business for 40-plus years and I really enjoy that business as well,” he said. “I also enjoy farming and raising cattle. If I’m not selling autos or campers, you most likely will catch me on Saturdays selling estates - real estate - or out on the farm baling hay.” Binegar said his main business goal is to sell a product that people will enjoy and that will bring them back in the future. “We strive to make
Are you interested in learning more about flowers? On March 29, Pam Bennett, state Master Gardener coordinator and Clark County OSUE educator will present a program on “Top-performing, Low-Maintenance Annuals” at the Fincastle campus of Southern State College. The workshop starts at 7 p.m. in room 110 and is free to the public. Is your garden tilled? Are the weeds getting a head start on you? Did you make a list of what you planted in your vegetable garden last year? Remember how important it is to rotate your crops! Some of the crop families are a little confusing. The potato family includes eggplant, pepper, potato, tomatillo and tomato. When you are gardening in a small space, just try to keep the crops with the most severe soil problems – potatoes, onions, and members of the cabbage family-moving on a three or four-year cycle and do your best with the rest. Binegar admits that he is always busy doing something. “But I don’t think I would want it any other way,” he said. “This is just what I’m supposed to do and I’m grateful I’m able to do it all.” Outside of his work, Binegar said he enjoys spending time with family and friends. “...Especially spending time with my grandson, Brady, who turns two (soon),” he said. Binegar said he also enjoys auto racing, but NASCAR and Sprint car the most. “I try to go as often as I
can, but with everything I have going on, that’s not very often,” he said. In addition to their son, Binegar and his wife, Mandy, of 27 years, have a daughter, Lindsay who is finishing student teaching and will soon become a kindergarten teacher. Matt is married to Ellen (Davis) who teaches in Washington Court House. “Brady is our only grandchild as of now and he is a lot of fun to have around. I have a great family,” Binegar said. continued from Page 1 Binegar said. “In 2002 we expanded to used campers along with our auto sales, seeing there was a need for camper sales and repairs in our area.” He said that need was evident given Greenfield’s proximity to several campgrounds. “We decided to make a move and expand our operation into new travel trailers and in order to do so we had to have a larger facility. So in 2004, we purchased the old Greenfield Implement property off of Paul Penn and moved our dealership to that location where we have a large showroom with all types of camper parts and supplies, a service area and over three acres for RVs and autos to be displayed,” Binegar said. Along with several used RVs and autos, Binegar’s Truck, Auto and Camper Sales carries a line of Puma by Palomino and a line of Oasis by Shasta, which Binegar said are both Forest River Products. “This was a very good move for us. We have sold travel trailers to people all over, including Canada,” Binegar said. Helping Binegar with
LILAC BLOOMS their home under the Blue Spruce tree. We mowed our lawn for the first time this season. My husband grumbled the whole time that no one should have to mow in March! He discovered a missing branch from one of our Scotch Pine trees down along the creek. We think that the beavers have returned and decided to chew on some pine trees. The large branch was gone, but the chew “clues” remained. This past week Brown County Master Gardener Volunteers met with the Veteran Gardeners at the Ohio Veterans Home at Georgetown. Susan Barber gave a presentation on “Extreme Gardening – Growing Giant Pumpkins and Watermelons.” We took a soil sample from the raised beds and as we left, Art Puckett and his son were working on turning the soil and planting potatoes, peas and some other cool weather crops. If you want to learn more about herbs, plan to attend a workshop being given at the Fayetteville/Perry Library on March 28. This workshop starts at 6 p.m. and is free to the public.
DEAR ABBY: I am a 23year-old female who lives with my parents. I saw "The Little Mermaid" for the first time recently, and now I'm very worried. The other day I walked in and caught my mom talking to my pet fish, Flounder. I have noticed Mom breaks into Broadway-style songs randomly, just like Ariel did in the movie. She also has the same red hair as Ariel. Mom is a lifeguard at the local pool. Could my mom be part fish? If so, am I half-mermaid? I will await your reply before attempting underwater breathing. Please answer promptly. -- SEA-ING THINGS CLEARLY

DEAR READERS: It's April Fools' Day, the one day I can share some of those letters I receive from readers whose questions might not seem as appropriate on any of the other 364 days of the year (or 365 this leap year). Enjoy!

After a “ walk about” on our property we were surprised to find lilac bushes ready to bloom! What a strange, but beautiful spring we are enjoying. I have never seen my Forsythia bloom as it has this year. What’s not blooming at my house? My Redbuds! Each year I anticipate relishing in their purple blooms, only to be disappointed as they leaf out without flowering. These little Eastern Redbuds were transplanted from a hillside at my In-laws, where as we speak, that same hillside is full of purple blooms. The reference books state that Redbuds will grow well in full sun, partial shade or light shade. The soil should be a fertile, deep loam that is moist and well drained. This plant has tender roots and does not like being transplanted. Caterpillars, leafhoppers, scale insects, weevils, blight, canker, dieback, downy mildew, leaf spot and Verticillium wilt are potential problems for redbuds. Maybe those little transplants are still building up energy from being moved and they will reward me with blooms next year! I planted my “rabbit patch” in the garden yesterday. This part of the garden is guarded by a mesh fence and garden gate. Cabbage plants, Kale, onion plants and sets, Swiss Chard, Leaf Lettuce, French Radishes, and Spinach all enjoyed the rain last night. I transplanted some volunteer Parsley plants to the front porch bed and found the chewed remnants of the stems this morning. Somebody must have been watching me plant yesterday from

ASTROLOGY MONDAY, APRIL 2, 2012 CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY: Michael Fassbender, 35; Christopher Meloni, 51; Emmylou Harris, 65; Linda Hunt, 67. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Positive action will bring good results. Get rid of limitations by addressing whatever or whoever is holding you back. Show your strengths and you will be taken seriously and be given a chance to increase your earning potential and improve your lifestyle. Remember to play as hard as you work. Your numbers are 2, 7, 13, 24, 33, 35, 45. ARIES (March 21-April 19): People will gravitate toward you if you are charming and fun to be with. There's no room for negativity if you want to get ahead. A steady pace and a smile on your face will bring you the highest returns. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Do whatever it takes to enhance what you have to offer personally and professionally. Pick up additional skills or network with people you feel can contribute to your advancement. Take action now and you'll improve your future. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Overt action will cause tension. Keep things simple if you want to ensure that you don't lose financially, contractually or emotionally. Don't allow a colleague or peer to make your life miserable. Use your head and plan your strategy. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Discuss your plans quietly. Using force will backfire. Demonstrating your creativity will evoke a new respect from others. Your philosophy is changing, and what you project will attract attention. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Mix things up a bit. Get involved in something that promotes meeting new people and that can result in good fortune. You will learn something very valuable if you are exposed to unique experiences, different cultures or unfamiliar surroundings. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): The personal changes you make now will help you develop a new approach to something you've wanted to pursue for some time. Good fortune can be yours if you are open and receptive to what someone unusual contributes. A partnership will lead to success. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): What you put out, you will get back. This give-and-take day requires compassion and understanding. Monetary handouts aren't applicable; honest, hands-on hard work will suffice. Sincerity will enhance your reputation and highlight your skills. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Avoid making a decision based on emotion. Letting your opinions be tainted by someone trying to win favors or twist your words to suit a situation you shouldn't get involved in will cause you to miss out on a personal interest you should pursue. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): A moneymaking opportunity is apparent. Readjust your current living situation to better suit your needs and you can lower your overhead. Utilizing your talents to the fullest will ensure that you can take care of your finances as well. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Update current contractual agreements. Refinance or invest in something you feel will improve your future posi-
tion. Love is on the rise, and socializing will invite new romantic opportunities. Spending quality time with your current lover will secure your relationship. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): You'll be tempted to overreact, overindulge or take on too much if an emotional situation crops up. Do whatever it takes to keep the peace and please the people you love. Use your head when
it comes to making a final decision. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Favors will be granted if you use charm to get your way. Love is on the rise, and traveling, networking and getting out with friends will lead to a romantic encounter. A job well done will bring you an unexpected bonus. BIRTHDAY BABY: You are aggressive, confident and eager to excel. You are an instigator.

Calling your doctor by their title and last name and allowing them to address you by yours is a good start. Taking care to wash properly before an appointment involving a physical exam is another important gesture. Being prepared for an appointment is helpful too: bring a list of symptoms, medications, and questions to ask. In the context of providing the best care possible, other pet peeves that doctors expressed were patients not taking medications as directed, patients bringing in their own indiscriminate online research, and the burden of insurance paperwork. The next time you see your doctor, keep a few of these things in mind and you might see better results!
Medical Update by Dr. Clark And Associates LIKE PARENT, LIKE CHILD Youngsters of parents who make regular visits to the dentist are more likely to see the dentist themselves. According to research involving over 6,000 children between the ages of two and seventeen years, researchers found that about 86% of children whose parents had a dental visit during the preceding year had dental exams compared with 63% of children whose parents had not scheduled exams for themselves. With tooth decay as one of the most chronic diseases in the United States, parents are urged to focus on their families’ oral health needs. Treatment delayed is likely to be a good deal costlier, in terms of dollars as well as outcome, than immediate preventive treatment of cavities and gum disease.
Our entire staff at CLARK FAMILY DENTISTRY encourages your questions about comprehensive dental care. We supply superior oral health care for the entire family. For answers to your oral health issue questions we invite you to call our office at 937.393.3494. Your health is our first priority. We are pleased to provide you with state-of-theart dental care at 624 S. High Street, Hillsboro. Our goal is to make each visit to our office a comfortable and positive experience. New patients are always welcome. P.S. The American Dental Association recommends that children have their first visit to the dentist by their first birthday. 2267588
In honor of National Doctor's Day March 30th 2012, the staff at Edgewood Manor of Greenfield would like to proudly acknowledge our facility physicians: Dr. Dirk Juschka, Dr. Jeanette Morgan, Dr. Richard Mizer and Dr. Nathaniel Marvel as well as the physicians at Adena Greenfield Medical Center and Highland District Hospital. We also would like to recognize the many other physicians that service this and surrounding communities. We are very proud of our dedicated physicians for the high-quality of care and services each one of them provide. Our many thanks and appreciation to each and every one of you.

Far beyond the white-coated glamour of TV’s primetime medical shows, the real nitty gritty of being a primary care doctor means dealing with pain and suffering, financial pressure, and the downright messiness of the human body. By presidential proclamation, March 30 is National Doctor’s Day, and in honor of the occasion, here are some observations from doctors and some ways to work together with them for better patient care. According to a March 2011 Consumers Reports survey of 660 primary care physicians, the biggest obstacle to patient care is inconsistency. When patients jump from doctor to doctor, their case histories don’t always follow them and the trail and connectivity of symptoms is lost. Seventy-six percent of doctors said fostering a long-term relationship between them and their patients would greatly improve their ability to provide excellent care. Sixty percent of those surveyed reported that being respectful and courteous to doctors would likely lead to more reciprocity in that department.

Sparkling clean from top to bottom
Spring is the season of renewal. It’s also the time when we’re most likely to feel like scouring our homes from top to bottom. We all love to have a clean and sparkling home to welcome the beautiful, sunny days of summer. The spring clean is an annual rite of passage to chase away all the dirt hidden away in a home’s nooks and crannies, so after putting away cool-weather boots and parka and ice scraper for the car window, get ready to wash, dust, and polish.
Do you hate spring cleaning? Then call on the services of house cleaning experts who have turned dusting and mopping into a fine art. Ventilation ducts, walls, floors, baseboards, mouldings, windows, carpets, rugs: nothing can escape the keen eyes of these professionals. Entrust a specialist with all your cleaning jobs, from attic to basement via the garage and even the outside of the house. And don’t forget that your pets could probably do with a good grooming session as well! For a quick version of the spring clean, fresh air is the key word. It eliminates all traces of fall and winter, including irritants such as dust and allergens. So open your windows wide and let the wonderful scents of spring freshen up your entire house. While the windows are open, why not grab the mop and a pail of water to give the floor a quick swish; it will dry fast and bring a sparkle to your space. Spring will definitely be in the air after a little bit of hard work! Spare yourself the trouble and leave your spring cleaning to the professionals!
